Kristin and Karen revisit the books that shaped our childhood. Possibly proving you can't go home again, and that someone should have been paying attention to what we were reading. Authors range from Avi and Zilpha Keatley Snyder to Danielle Steel and Anne McCaffery.
HELLO FRIENDS!
We're super excited to kick off season 4 with our new improved monthly release schedule, only a week late! We're doing Danielle Steel's Zoya, and oh boy-a, it's a treat.
Featuring the lovely Reed's musical interpretation.
CN: reference to sexual abuse.
NEXT: Beverly Jenkins' Vivid.
We're trying a couple of new things this season, mostly because Karen is lazy so while we may have fewer episodes, we will have the musical stylings of the lovely Reed each episode. Here's a little behind the scenes of how the music process gets made...
Coming soon. Season Four. Now with more Reed!
The end of the summer approaches! We're hoping you're all safe and masked up. This time we're looking at Christopher Pike's Last Act and asking ourselves WHAT ABOUT THE DUCKS THO. Joined by the lovely Reed.
Next Up: Another doozy, Christopher Pike's Scavenger Hunt
Summer reading continues with another visit to the Sweet Valley with Francine Pascal's Special Christmas (Sweet Valley High Super Edition). We've got special guest Mark from brother podcast Trapper Keeper Confessions AND very special musical guest Reed!
This book has everything--Suzy Devlin, elf costumes, Secret Santas, MS ...
Next up: Christopher Pike's Last Act
Hi friends. We've had several conversations about how we want to address the upswell of support for Black Lives Matter, and the hopefully sustaining efforts by white people to adopt antiracist practices.
To that end, we're expanding our brief to include the diverse books we missed as young readers and the amazing new books being published now. We're starting in September with Richard Wright's Black Boy.
Hello! Karen's getting back on track with scheduling and everything, thanks a zillion for the patience, etc.
We're kicking off SUMMER READING with the coma book from everyone's favorite psychopaths, the Wakefield Twins! Enjoy Francine Pascal's written by Kate William Dear Sister
Up next: Francine Pascal's Special Christmas (Sweet Valley High Super Edition)
Honestly, the most exciting thing about this book was the cover, and the hands down most exciting thing about this episode is that we've conned John into audio engineering for us! John has notes!
It is a crazy book tho.
Next up: Summer reading starts with Francine Pascal's Dear Sister (Sweet Valley High #9)
Oooh, this book was bad, my friends. We're reading John Grisham's The Pelican Brief and marveling at just how racist and sexist and otherwise horrifying the 90s really were. Amazingly so.
Next up, a departure from the usual to read a book from 2014, Lois Ruby's The Doll Graveyard, because how can you not.
CN: All of the worst things from the 90s
Friends! Apologies for the delay in posting, Karen's spent WAY too much time on Zoom recently. But school's almost out for summer!!
If we can't leave our houses, let's take a mind vacation to through The Gate to Women's Country by the fabulous Sheri S. Tepper.
We love you, stay safe and stay home.
Next up: John Grisham's The Pelican Brief
What a blessed little time capsule of "before"! Karen was excited about time off! And so mad about not getting Elizabeth Warren for president. Kristin was so patient, and no one was worried about toilet paper.
It's Katherine Palmer Peterson's Jacob Have I Loved and opinions abound!
Next up: The Gate to Women's Country by Sheri S. Tepper!
Hello socially distant friends. We recorded this episode on March 6, and like, how many years ago was that?
Nevertheless we persist in reading some Anne McCaffrey, enjoying (or not) the first book in her so-called Tower and Hive series, The Rowan.
Next up: Jacob Have I Loved by Katherine Palmer Peterson
Friends! We still love you! From a distance!
Apologies for the delay in posting, moving took more out of Karen than she realized--but fear not we're back with a plucky story about terrifying children who smile all the time. It's the Boxcar Children, y'all and they are pleased to see you!
Next up will be Anne McCaffery's The Rowan.
First, we do want to say that we'll miss Mary Higgens Clark--an era of storytelling has ended. MHC!
But to perk things up, we offer you this delightful morsel, Mary Norton's The Borrowers. All the miniaturized home decor and fashion you could want!
Next up: The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner
MHC!!! It's season three and we're breaking ALL the rules--we're reading a recent book by our ol' Mary Higgens Clark, I've Got You Under My Skin. And it is really something. Words were definitely printed on a page.
Next up, back to the classics with The Borrowers by Mary Norton. AND YOU ARE WELCOME.
Content Note: not *quite* as much racism, but ook the flippant approach to childhood sexual abuse...
Happy Season Three!!!
And wow do we have a doozy for you. Somehow Kristin suckered Karen into reading Danielle Steel's Message from Nam. As in Danielle Steel does the Civil Rights Movement AND the Vietnam War. It's ... a lot.
CN:
SO MUCH RACISM.
Next Up: Mary Higgens Clark's I've Got You Under My Skin
Y'all. I don't even want to spoil the surprise, but I do want to say: SPECIAL GUESTS Haley and Reed! and SUPER SPECIAL SURPRISE READING. Hoping all your holidays are bright and the Krampus leaves you alone. Until next year with Danielle Steel's Message from Nam...
Happy Turkey everyone!
We're wrapping up our second season with some delightful Nancy Drew--Reds are under our beds here!
There may be a holiday surprise for you loyal lovely listeners. And of course, we kick off season 3 in January with Danielle Steele's Letter from Nam.
All our love and turkeys!
K and K
We lied about Nancy Drew! We recorded out of sequence!
This book is so delightful, friends. We're reading The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin and it is EVERYTHING. Also Kristin gives us hot stock tips and Karen completely loses it over the ending.
Up next: Carolyn Keene's Secrets Can Kill (Nancy Drew Files #1)
