A gennaio 1959, nove escursionisti russi guidati da Igor Dyatlov affrontano gli Urali, ma la loro spedizione si trasforma in un mistero. Dopo una deviazione forzata dal percorso, il gruppo monta una tenda sul "Kholat Syakhl", la "montagna morta". Il 26 febbraio, i soccorritori trovano l'accampamento abbandonato: la tenda è strappata dall'interno, ma ordinata. Vicino, impronte di piedi nudi conducono nella foresta, dove vengono ritrovati i corpi di alcuni escursionisti, in condizioni inquietanti: malvestiti, con ferite inspiegabili come costole rotte, crani fratturati e, nel caso di Lyudmila, la lingua mancante. Alcuni vestiti sono contaminati da radioattività. Le autorità archiviano il caso attribuendolo a una "forza naturale irresistibile", ma le teorie si moltiplicano: valanghe, stufe difettose, esperimenti militari e persino alieni. I misteri del Passo Dyatlov restano irrisolti, alimentando speculazioni e leggende.
