Nel novembre 1938, ad Harbin, in Manciuria, il medico giapponese Shiro Ishii dirige l’Unità 731, un centro segreto di ricerca sulla guerra batteriologica. Con il sostegno dell’imperatore Hirohito, trasforma peste, tifo e antrace in armi mortali, utilizzando prigionieri cinesi e russi come cavie umane. Gli esperimenti includono infezioni letali, vivisezioni senza anestesia, congelamenti e test di bombe batteriologiche. Ogni mese, l’Unità 731 produce batteri per contaminare pozzi e villaggi, causando epidemie devastanti.
Nel 1945, alla resa giapponese, Ishii ordina la distruzione delle prove, ma il rilascio di animali infetti provoca altre 30.000 morti. Sebbene responsabile di almeno 300.000 vittime, Ishii scampa alla giustizia, offrendo i suoi dati agli USA in cambio dell’immunità. Nessuno verrà processato, e molti ex membri dell’Unità 731 otterranno ruoli di potere in Giappone. Solo nel 2002 un tribunale riconoscerà i crimini, senza però condannare nessuno.
