Il 28 febbraio 1986, nel centro di Stoccolma, il primo ministro svedese Olof Palme viene assassinato con due colpi di pistola mentre cammina con sua moglie dopo il cinema. L’omicida si dilegua, lasciando dietro di sé un caso irrisolto per quasi quarant’anni. L’indagine si trasforma in un disastro: prove contaminate, testimoni inattendibili e teorie del complotto che coinvolgono la CIA, l’Apartheid sudafricano e persino la P2 italiana.
Nel 1989, un tossicodipendente, Christer Pettersson, viene condannato grazie alla testimonianza di Lisbet Palme, ma in appello viene assolto. Solo nel 2020, la polizia svedese annuncia che il colpevole potrebbe essere Stig Engström, un impiegato della Skandia presente sulla scena del crimine, morto suicida nel 2000. Senza prove definitive, il caso viene chiuso, lasciando il mistero irrisolto.
Un delitto politico? Un colpo di un fanatico? La verità, forse, rimarrà sepolta nel gelo di Stoccolma.
