Toren van Babel is een maandelijkse serie binnen de Architectenweb Podcast. Hierin praat architect Daan Roggeveen (MORE Architecture) met ontwerpers, ontwikkelaars en andere experts die allemaal hun eigen perspectief hebben op hoogbouw. Doel is het antwoord vinden op de vraag: hoe maak je nu een echt goed hoog gebouw? De gast deze maand is Jos Melchers, directeur gebiedsontwikkeling bij de gemeente Rotterdam en bestuurslid van Stichting Hoogbouw.
Voordat hij bij de gemeente Rotterdam aan de slag ging, werkte Jos jarenlang bij ontwikkelaar MAB aan binnenstedelijke ontwikkelingsprojecten. We praten onder meer over de ontwikkeling van De Resident en het Wijnhavenkwartier in Den Haag. We bespreken de opzet van het stedenbouwkundige plan door Rob Krier en hebben het over het perspectief van de gebruiker in dit soort ontwikkelingen.
En we praten over de verdichting van de Wilhelminapier in Rotterdam, en specifiek het gebouw De Rotterdam dat Jos vanuit MAB ontwikkelde. Hij vertelt over het ontstaan van het concept voor De Rotterdam, de samenwerking met OMA en over de lange ontwikkeltijd van dit zeer grote en complexe gebouw. Maar ook over de lessen die er uit de ontwikkeling van dit gebouw getrokken kunnen worden.
En uiteraard kijken we vanuit Jos’ huidige functie in Rotterdam naar de ambities van de stad. We hebben het over de betekenis van ‘goede groei’ en over de verdichtingsopgave in de stad. En over de rol die hoogbouw daarin speelt. Luisteren dus!
