The search for the perfect lip shade can be frustrating, but a popular theory says that your nipples are the key to unlocking your perfect shade.

We couldn’t resist talking to flirté beauty founder, Renae Franz, who has created an app to hack shade-matching nips and lips. We put the app and the lipstick to the test!

You’ll hear about:

  • flirté foundations: Discover how the nipple/lip color matching trend led to the creation of a groundbreaking technology platform and lip company.
  • Safe scanning: Renae walks us through the security measures behind the camera-based app, explaining how they associate a Pantone shade to your nipple.
  • The results: Experience the excitement firsthand as Amber, our host, tries on her top matches live. Renae demonstrates the stark contrast between a misfit shade and a flirté-matched one.

Tune in to uncover whether your nipples hold the secret to your perfect lip color.

(00:00):
This is the Art Beauty podcast, where we are always reaching for truth
in beauty.
Remember, the brands of the people on the show
are not paying to be here, so we get tohave the conversation that we want.
Ask the questions you wantbecause you deserve to be informed
so you can make the best choicesfor yourself.
With that said, I'm Amber Milt and today,
my fabulous co-host is Renae Franz.

(00:22):
She is the founder of flirté Beauty.
And we're going to be talking aboutan exciting new app to help you
figure out your perfect lip color.
And P.S., it's based on your nipples.
We're going to be talkingto all about this.
Welcome to the show, Renae.
Thank you so much for being here.
Thank you, Amber. It's such an honor.

(00:44):
So last week, we had a podcastthat was a little bit heavy.
We were talking about breastimplant illness.
I figured, let us flip the script, keep it a little fun this week
and talk about lip color, which we know we're going into spring.
Everybody needs like a new refreshto their makeup bag.
Before we talk about the app, though, and these lips,
tell us a little bit about flirté beauty.

(01:06):
Renaee Sure.
So I think it's probably important
to know Amber that I had no intentionof going into beauty.
I'm not a person that even wearsa lot of makeup, but about six years ago,
I was driving my daughter home from schooland she was sitting in the backseat
reading something, and all of a suddenshe yelled,
Hey, Mom, did you know your perfect lipcolors, your nipple color?

(01:26):
And I was like, What? Helena?
What are you reading?
But the whole way home,I couldn't stop thinking about it.
Got home, ran in my bathroom, tried my lipsticks on.
They didn't match.
And I said, Helena, grab your cell phone.
We're going to Walgreens. We're like, Right.
So we took picturesand we're like holding up the camera.
In Walgreens, you're looking at the phototrying to figure out like,

(01:48):
what colors would match.
I bought over $100 worth of crappylipsticks, got home.
We spent like an hourcoloring all over ourselves.
We found our exactmatch in the shade darker and we loved it,
but we're like, we're kind of fair skin.
I wonder if it works for everybody.
So I had a yoga class that weekend.
Women of all different skin tonesand ethnic backgrounds.

(02:10):
And I asked them would they would try it.
Then I would buy thema free month of yoga.
So everybody did it.
And I had a voice of customerfrom 20 people.
And what we found was 85%like their closest match.
Everybody liked their shade darker,
but everybody complainedthat the process just took so long.

(02:31):
And it also because because you have to
you can't just look at a lipstick and say, that's my nipple color.
You have to go to the storeand buy a bunch of random shades and color
all over your. Home and and gotcha.
Okay. Yeah, Yeah.
And so I thought, wow, you know, Ibring new medical technologies to market.
I bet we could create an app

(02:53):
with my number
one product development spec being privacythat discreetly scans
your nipple colorand then matches you to a lipstick.
So that's how the idea came about.
I love that.
So and yes, I use the app.
I took a picture of my nipple, but
but I have to ask you on that question, does that mean that like Russian red

(03:17):
lipstick is really not anybody'sperfect match?
Because I know some womenwho really can rock that very market.
So this is your most naturalcomplementary shade.
It's almost like helpingto pick your best nude.
Perfect. Okay, I love that.
Get in the nude to pick your best nude.
And P.S., I've heardand I've done this before that

(03:38):
to find your bestblush color, it's the inside of your lip.
Yes. And so
what we've found, for example, womenwho've said to me,
I've had a mastectomy, I don't havenipples, How do I get matched?
We have them scan the inside of their lip.
Okay, so. Exac.
But it's close enough.
It's close enough.

(03:58):
All right, So we have here.
So I did this
and essentially it was easy.
You downloaded the app.
I went in good lightingand took a picture of my nipple,
sent it off and got these results.
Actually, it was instant.
Like I got thethe match pretty instantly correct.
Talk us through that process. Right.

(04:19):
So so I do want to make surethat everybody knows that.
Yes, we initially used the camerato take an image of the nipple,
but the second you're in full controlthe process.
So the second you use the scan, Amber, that image was gone forever.
We just savedthe numeric value of the color.

(04:40):
So if you've ever worked with like paint
at the paint store, John Edwards, what have you are Pantone chart.
You know that every color has a numberassociated with it, so it's only
the number that transacts with our store
and selects the colors that closest match.
You got it. Because you're right.
I don't think that pictureended up on my phone anywhere in.

(05:01):
No, it doesn't. It's instantly gone.
When you hit use the scan and I wanteverybody to know that it's creepy.
You're not going to see your nipplesanywhere.
And also, just to say, you probably sawthat image, it's pretty blurry.
It's not like everyone could saythat's that's Amber is nipple now.

(05:22):
Yeah, but but I promise.
You, my husband, because let me justtell you that man, God bless him.
But yeah, so.
Okay, so.
So we do this, we get the color matches.
I thought it would be funto kind of try them on.
So I'm not wearing any lip color.
I have not tried these, but my best match, which is a color,

(05:45):
I got to be honest, I don't know thatI would ever buy this and.
wait, no. Online trust.
Let just Yeah, trust is kind ofthis is this is where I live.
So actually, kudos to you.
This is where I live.
I feel like this onegoing down a little bit more.
This purple GAVI, which is my fifth
closest match, is a colorand it's kind of hard to see here.

(06:07):
It looks a little bitmore purple in person.
And I don't know that I would ever bebrave enough to wear this.
So we're going to try them all on.
Should I start with my best match?
Let's start with your closest guy.
So I don't know if this is no case.
Time to talk about the formulas.
So I do formulate CLE to European beautystandards.

(06:29):
You'll notice that.
Well, tell me what it feels like going.
God, that's beautiful. It is very pretty.
What does it feel like?
I wish I had a mirror.
Very, very creamy and weak.
Can we stop for a secondand also talk about
this would be the most stunning packaging
ever. It's would look at this.
Can you tell us a little bitabout the packaging?

(06:49):
Yeah.
So so the whole lineI have intentionally made sustainable.
So the packaging is bamboo.
You can compost itand then when you pull the tube apart,
you can actually the inner aluminum pieceyou can recycle.
Amazing.
Okay, I'm not going to pull it apartbecause I don't want to break anything.

(07:12):
All of the
ingredientsI sustainably source here in the U.S.
in this line.
This is the Desert Matte line.
I live in Arizona, in the Sonoran Desert.
You can seeI have like pictures of Arizona behind me.
I use a prickly pear, cactus seed oil, pomegranate seed oil and hope of seed oil.
And I think that's so creamy.
It is very, very cream.

(07:32):
And I got to say, yeah, that's. A really.
Good match.
Now you're wearing one, too.
So what color are you wearing?
I'm prickly pear. That's my match.
Okay. Pricklypear was one, two, three, four, ten.
Prickly pear. Look, you know what?
Let's try that, too.
You said that 85% the first match
for a beautiful nude is the the favorite.

(07:54):
But a lot of peoplealso like the second one.
Correct.
Their their pop of color, their shade darker.
Yeah. Okay.
So this is one.
It's mesquite mint.
This is the one that I feltlike was very brown
that I don't know that I would evernormally buy this myself, but looks good.
Let's see.
I don't.

(08:20):
yeah.
And you can build the color darker, too.
Each passthat you do just gets a little bit darker.
that's.
That's like a really sophisticated look.
This is more kind of fun, Playful.
Your nude. This is like, Yeah.
I feel like I'm having my day.
A little moment.
Look at you.

(08:41):
So while I'm doing this,
you said that you would show us a colorthat is not the right match for you.
Yep. Yeah.
So interestingly enough,so when my daughter and I did this,
she matched different colors than I did.
So I am going to put on a shadethat I never or match to daughter shade.
It's playful, Poppy.

(09:02):
Okay.
Now, I don't know if you'reyou're kind of sensing a theme here.
You might if you'reif you're familiar with the desert.
But this line, it's the desert Matte line.
And everything's named
after things that are familiar to us herein the Sonoran Desert in Arizona.
So we're coming into spring.
We're going to have a lot of poppiesblooming.
So my lipsticks off and I'm going to put

(09:22):
playful poppyon, which looks terrible on me.
I mean, I don't think it looks terror.
I got to be honest.
I don't think it looks terrible on you,
but it's not as goodas the one that you just had. Right.
So you'll notice that.
So take a kind of look at my skintone in my iPhone with this.

(09:45):
And then if it's okay, I'll take it offand then I'll show you.
Pair what my skin toneand my eye color look like.
I'm wearing prickly pear right now.
What do we think?I actually kind of am loving this.
That looks reallythat looks beautiful on me to.
Take a look a little bit pinker.
I see.
So it does go on sheer ish.
Sheer ish.
Which I got to tell you, I love, because Iyou know, people have listened to this.

(10:09):
I never wear lipstickbecause of my lips. It's disgusting.
But I kind of
this has like, the kind of nice thingbetween like,
it's definitely a lipstick.
It's not a gloss. Right.
But it does have that kind of creamymore of like a almost like a sheer ish
feeling whereif you are worried about, like, that ultra
high pigmentedmatte look, this doesn't seem to be that.

(10:33):
I mean, put this on here, too.
Yeah, you can watch.
When I'm putting this on, let's say.
yeah,
right.
Like it almost is this year, but you can build up the color.
Okay, so, so let's go back to your.
So what is the reactionbeen with everybody

(10:56):
doing this?
Like, have you found thatpeople are like blown away?
Yeah.
So it's it's, it's interesting. So
when when a lot of people do it,I find that
most women, especially that aren'tused to wearing makeup.
Well, first of all, they end up loving the product
for the reason you were saying it.
It goes on sheer.

(11:16):
It's lightweight,
but a lot of times they'llput their colors on and they'll say,
I don't think I like that.
But then the group of women around themwill be like that Will
or their male partnerwill say the same thing.
So it's it's, it's interesting or other, you know, women like you who are used
to working with more cosmetic products,it just sort of like

(11:40):
I think you you automatically gravitatetoward some of those shades.
So they tend to really like the colorsand then the formulations.
I'm kind of obsessed with thisbecause I don't wear these
a pop color,so this is actually fit for me.
This is purple agave.
And you can see this is the one that waslike the dark purple one that I was like,

(12:01):
I don't know about this, but I'm kind of loving it.
Should I also try it?
Okay, so let's see here,
because this is a playful puppythat you said was not for you.
This is actually third.
Right? That's third that. Yeah. Yeah.
So that one, that's the one I just had onwhen I wiped off.
Yeah. Yeah.
What is the most popularshade that you're selling.

(12:21):
So that the two most popularshades are prickly pear
and burnt adobe and burnt adobe is a dupefor clinique's black honey.
And actually,I wish I would have sent that to you
because people who matched
address letters and playful puppylook phenomenal in burnt Adobe.
So that's your number three.

(12:43):
This is playful, Poppy.
What do we think?
I think it's I think it looks good.
I feel like I need to
like I need a mirror. So,
I mean, that actually doesyou know, I'm wearing very purple makeup
right now,so I wonder if that's skewing it
because that's like a little bitmore amber or like a little bit

(13:03):
more what would you call this, like a sienna almost.
It's like, horrible. Yeah, Yeah.
But I have know. Thank you.
Because I feel like
I've got five lipsticks herethat I'm going to rock that really work.
So. So what else?
Okay, so now, in addition to the optics, what's next for you
now that we've got, you know, the perfectlip match, you've made it so easy

(13:23):
for people to get these colorswhere were you thinking next?
Well, I have I have lip oils as well.
And. And I need to get my oilyour closest.
Yeah.
So these are what my lip oils look like.
So I have a whole range of colorsit fills out.
So I have eight of the desert matte shadesand then I have six lip oils.

(13:46):
So, you know, in total I have 14 differentcolors that we can closely match you to.
So the, the lip oils are Marine themed,so we use marine algae oil.
So they're incredibly hydrating.
But as you can see,we have a biome theme going here.
So we have the Desert Matte Line inspiredby desert ingredients, the lip oils.

(14:09):
I'm not too good at this kind of stuff.
The lip oil is inspiredby marine ingredients,
and then I will be launching
a rainforest line in honor of pride,
and it will have Rainforest Botanicals.
It's just taking longer to figure outthe formulations for it, because one thing
I haven't mentioned in depth as well,I did mention that our products are clean

(14:34):
and they're clean to European beautystandards,
but it's difficultto find Mica's and oxides
in natural colorantsto give you the colors
of the rainbow for the rainforest line.
So that's
that's, that's coming.
But it's a it's a challenge.
Now, willall of these lines be nipple matched?

(14:55):
I mean, is that going
to be the thing with flirté beautyis all about matching to your nipples?
For the most part, Yeah.
I feel like nobody'sgoing to have green nipples.
Or maybe they will. Or yellow, but.
But it'll be interesting to see.
So will you be matching?
So like I said, nobody has Russian red nipples.
I'm sorry.
They just don't. Maybe, you know, maybe it does. Now.

(15:15):
I don't think so.
I don't think anybody has thatthat you know what I'm talking about.
Like that cherry apple or that red apple.
Big Apple, red
nipple.
I don't think they do.
So will you be helping people eventually
also figure out, like so many womenare, like, I can't wear red
because there's blue based red, orange based red.

(15:36):
So do you think that you might startto kind of explore with that?
You're giving me some good ideas.
good. Okay.
Yeah, Yeah.
You know,I hadn't given that a lot of thought.
Like I said, I'm not a superbig makeup person, so you're right.
That is definitely somethingto be thinking about and bringing kind

(15:57):
of our A.I.
or artificial intelligence into thatand helping maybe women find their perfect
or just people find their perfect rad.
Yes. People, women, men, everybody, all beauty lovers.
Renaee, this is so fun, so awesome.
And I got to say, you know what?
So this is the again, this one is the thing.
Was this the burnt sienna? No. Playfulpoppy.

(16:18):
Playful.
Poppy is a colorI would have never picked up in the store.
Here you go.
I think it looks really good.
Looks fantastic on you.
I can see how it makes your eye color pop.
So tell us about the price points.
If people want tobuy these, where can they go?
So they're
$28.50and they can buy them on our website.

(16:41):
You can order themdirect from the app as well.
And then we also are a preferred luxuryspa partner with Marriott.
So you can find them in Ritz-Carlton,you can find them in J.W.
Marriott, you can find them in Weston's
in different parts of the US.
Congratulations, Mama.
That's huge.
I'm a marriott gal myself,so I'll keep an eye out for you.

(17:04):
And then the app.
So they go to the App Storeand that is just what is the app name?
It's it's under flirté beautyand you can download it
free from the App Storeor from Google Play.
And I'll just put it up here.
This is spelled FLIR t e,
but I will have everything in the shownotes that everybody can get that.

(17:26):
Renae, I want to thank youso much for being on today.
This is such, so much fun.
I hope you have a gorgeous time there.
And you said you were in Sedona.
I'm in Sedona.
Yeah. I've never been.
Is it amazing?
Is it everything they say it is and more?
Yeah.

I absolutely will.
