your technical car issues, So get your questions in early
on O double one, double A three or seven oh
two in the WhatsApp line Oh seven two seven oh
two one seven O two. But for now we're gonna
(00:26):
kick off by talking about tire selection for four by fours.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
Nicol, how are you doing.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
Hible Philly. Welcome in the mother city.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Thank you so much. I actually should have made you come.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
I applied for my visa last year just to make
sure I can get to her in time.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
Excellent, excellent, Nicole.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
Let's talk about tire selection for four by fours. I
think I am those car girlies that specifically love, you know,
those monster trucks that have those huge tires. So if
it were up to me, I would just put the
craziest sized tires on a four by four and have
(01:12):
that and drive around jobt But obviously it's.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
Not that simple.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
Yeah that I think that is the problem. So at
the moment it's quite a hot topic around bry fires
talking about four by four tires, and there's a little
joke going around. If you've got how do you know
somebody got be if good riach tars fit it to
their Bucky, how they will tell you like school.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
Anyway, Oh my gosh, the shade Nicol the.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
Shade about tires election for four by four. So I
had an opportunity to visit the General tire the Continental
factory in Queberco a while back, and was so interesting
to see all they manufacture, all these different tires, and
even in the same size of tire, gets so many compounds,
so many different option so they just quickly run through it.
Because if you've got a Bucky or Suv and you're
(02:06):
never going to go off road, that's exactly the point
that you also talk about. I mean, some people like
the heavy aggressive threat patterns, but if you're not going
to go off road, there's much better the options available
for you to fit. So in the general tire range,
I talk about a grab A GT Plus, which is
a road biased Bucky or SUV tire. So if you
(02:27):
know you're going just to do the general maybe a
dirt road at most, but mostly in town. It's a
family vehicle in this tire will help you to save
fuel because it's light the general size of a buck.
You say to six five sixty five seventeen only way
sixteen kilograms and it promis you very good grip as
(02:47):
well wet and dry, very good grip on tire. And
that's what you need as a family vehicle. But then
some people will say, okay, but I want to take
mild for four off road. I want to go to Bodswa.
I know I drive it in a stety a lot,
but I also want to do the off road trips.
Then you have to look at all rain tire. So
(03:07):
in general tires speak, you're looking at something like a
Grabber eighty three, which I call a fifty to fifty tires.
So where the road one is one hundred zero, so
one hundred road biased zero off roads, it's all that road.
But that's all. This is a fifty to fifty. So yes,
it's definitely got a bit more trade, it's got a
bit more capability off road, but it's not completely useless
(03:30):
on road. If you look at the mass of the
same size tire, you're talking about eighteen kilograms about two
kilograms heavior, so you can imagine already the construction is
a bit stronger than your road bias tire. But then
you get to the nice street pattern and the like
the really off road biased tires. Now, in general tire speak,
(03:50):
you're talking about a grabber X three no where all
the others are like a two fly tire versus a
three ply tire. It weighs twenty six kilogram, so already
you can see the massively heavier than a standard road tire.
Obviously got very aggressive trade pattern. It will be heavier
on fuel because the tire itself is heaviers occasionally nursia
(04:14):
us more and unfortunately this is sort of an eighty
twenty tire the other way, so mostly for off road use,
So you will pay a penalty in fuel consumption, you
will pay a penalty on the road noise, and you
will pay a penalty especially wet road performance. And that
is where the problem comes in. So when you go
(04:35):
for these aggressive look tires, but it's actually a family
vehicle yourself, you're doing yourself a bit of an injustice
there just to have that cool look. So unfortunately you
can't have everything in the same tire.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
Okay, And that's quite fair and I think maybe, like
what you said when we started, is if you're choosing
tires to use, for example, the car off road once
every two years, it kind of doesn't make sense.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
Yeah, So that's why the middle of the road tire
is an all terrain So that's sort of caters for
both ends of the spectrum. It's it's it's better on
the road than a completely off road time is better
off road than it's completely road bier styre. So I
think the most popular tires for these type of SUVs
and BUCkies and so on is your all terrains. But
(05:28):
I think there's a couple of people guilty of going
for that extreme look fitting massive tires, massive trade blocks,
massive patterns. But it's a safety concern. You're paying more
in fuel. But yeah, some people just want that look a.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
Do you, Nicole think that South African drivers are quite
uneducated when it comes to the specific conversation around tire
selection for four by fours and not just us as
the consumers that want you know, like me, can we
put months the truck tires on it or not? But
also you know when they get advice when they're selecting tires,
(06:07):
do you think that are quite uneducated.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
So I think in general, yes, there's obviously the crowd
of four, but four enthusiasts that exactly know the tire brands,
the compounds, the tire pressures you need to run. I mean,
there's some gurus out there, let's put it there. But
some people really buy a tire for their vehicle just
on the look of it. So even the whites writing
on the side all of a tire that can be
(06:33):
a cleanser from a marketing point of view because it
just looks cool. So I think the message out there is,
don't be tricked into just buying the tire that looks
the base for your eye. Make sure it actually meets
the performance that you intend to use it for.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
Okay, I think that we.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Obviously are getting a lot better with what the selections
are in terms of what comes standard with these four
by fours. Do you think the manufacturers are choosing the
right tires or they're also going for esthetics over functionality?
Speaker 1 (07:13):
So interesting questions seven O two the car features.
