In the early morning hours of September 15, 1986, the body of 71-year-old Lee Wan-im was found in the rice fields hear her home, strangled to death and bound with her own clothing. Crimes like this were not common in the rural city of Hwaseong in South Korea, but over the next five years they would become an almost regular occurrence: the work of a still unidentified serial killer. In 2003, the story of the Hwaseong serial murders was brought to the big screen by Bong Joon-ho in his second feature film, the crime-thriller "Memories of Murder." Based on a True Crime is a podcast where Chelsea’s love of true crime and David’s love of horror movies intersect. Join me on this podcast as I navigate the murky waters of human behavior, current events, and personal anecdotes through in-depth interviews with incredible people—all served with a generous helping of sarcasm and satire. After years as a forensic and clinical psychologist, I offer a unique interview style and a low tolerance for bullshit, quickly steering conversations toward depth and darkness.
