Did you know that black women are 3-4 times more likely to die during childbirth than white women? Black women are also at a higher risk of having premature births and encountering life-threatening complications during childbirth. You might think this is solely about healthcare access, but research shows that these conditions span across education and income levels. The issue is undoubtedly one of race. And what happens when everyone makes it home? For those who are able to give birth safely, postpartum mental health issues such as depression or anxiety may be an additional factor that may go untreated. Black women deserve better. In this week's episode, Eliza & Eboni sit down with Shivonne Odom, LPC of @akoma_counseling who is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Washington DC, a National Certified Counselor, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in the state of Maryland and a National Certified Perinatal Mental Health therapist. Find out what else Shivonne has to say about the vulnerabilities Black women face pre-and post-pregnancy, how they can advocate for themselves, and what resources are available during this critical time.
