(02:20):
Dan Holiday Box thirteen Carestar Time.I don't know how to ask you to
do this for me because I don'tknow who you are or whatever. You
want money to help me. Ican pay a little, or I've got
to help my boy. I cancome to you. You can see me.
(02:44):
I live at number two. Myname is missus Karen. Please,
if you will help, I'll doanything for you. It was written in
pencil, neatly, carefully, asif she wanted every word to count,
and it led to well a kid, a scared kid, and murder and
(03:17):
now back to Box thirteen and DanHoliday's newest adventure. They're like, what's
doing m it's a great observation,Susie. What brings it on? I
was trying to figure out what shelooks like? And did you well?
(03:37):
I think I can virtualize here visualize. Don't try the big ones until you
can handle the small ones. Whatdo you mean, mister Holliday? Will
you work on it a while untilI get back from missus Karen. Number
two four or five centers Avenue isright in the middle of a suit black
neighborhood on what is known as llUs out of the tracks. I have
(04:00):
no trouble finding the mailbox, markKaren or the flat. Will the number
four painted and white on the door? I knocked? Missus Karen let me
in. She was about forty five, worried looking and well she wasted no
time? Will you help me?Maybe you'd better tell me how before I
answer that I haven't much money.Money doesn't matter, Missus Karen. Just
(04:23):
tell me what you want. Youdon't take money, No, that's right,
Why I don't understand. Oh,I'll explain later. First, let's
see what you've got to say.All right, it's about my boy nickname.
Yes, his real name is Reginald. Oh, mister Holiday Dan for
(04:46):
sure, thank you. Well, well, he's in jail, Biff is
why for stealing? Missus Karen.I am not a detective. I never
work against the lie. I knowthat sounds well stuffy, but that's the
way it is. I didn't breakthe law. She said he was in
jail. I know he didn't doit. Do what. He was arrested
(05:06):
two days ago. Somebody broke intoa store and robbed a cash box.
But why was Bif arrested for theowner of the store thought it was Biff.
I it seems to Holiday, myboy. He got in bad company
about a year ago. He wasmixed up in something. Then, I
(05:27):
say, so, it looks badfor him now. But he didn't do
it. When they arrested him,he said he didn't do it. Oh
does he have a lawyer? Hedoesn't need one? Why not? Because
oh, he says he did it. Let me get this straight, Missus
Karen. At first he denied it. Now he adknits it. Well,
maybe maybe Biff realizes that he well, I know, I know, you
(05:51):
think he knows better than to denyit. Something like that. Yes,
go to see him, talk tohim, find out for yourself, and
if I decide he's guilty, youwon't have to come back here. Hello,
(06:23):
Beth, Yeah, who are youI am? I'm a friend of
your mother's. She's all right,didn't she? She's okay? I'm sure
I just came from her. Whoare you? Your mother asked me to
help? My name is Holiday?Down? Holiday? Never heard you?
Guess? Not Down? You aremy piece? Lawyers? The word you're
(06:44):
looking for? I don't want none? Well, I'm not listen. Let
me alone? Will you? Oh? I take it easy, Beth?
What's your racket, mister? Ifit makes any difference, I'm I'm a
writer, writer, books and off. Huh, I don't get it.
What do you want with me?Story of my life or something? Maybe
(07:05):
I'd like to write something good aboutit? Blow out of here, will
you? Deff? I told youI just came from your mother. She
asked me to help you. Yeah, I guess you would. You see
she doesn't think you broke into thatstory. I said I did after you
said you didn't. Hey, lookI get a better rap scene. I
did it. I was easier thana guy when you don't put up a
(07:27):
squat. That's why I said Ididn't. Then I did, And all
right, I think you're lying thisall right, so you think I'm lying,
So go ahead and thank it andget out of here and stay away
from maya hear me? You juststay away from just a minute, I
say, get out of here anddon't come back. No more, don't
come back. Well, I didn'tknow what to think. Def was lying
(07:55):
or he wasn't lying. That's agreat fun, a big help. Then
I called Kling and got him tofind out a few more things from him
which I mightn't have been able toget without him. Yeah, I got
what you want. Then, BiffKern, that's the kid year ago picked
up with stealing tires, first offenseprobation, but in a couple more scrapes.
(08:16):
I think serious under this and ifthis has proved on him, proved
he admitted it, nothink approved. Then he denied it. First w sure
lallaby was that he'd been to amovie. We couldn't he prove him?
No? Did he stick to it? Yeah, But all of a sudden
he admits breaking into that store. That's it. You're interested? Huh yeah,
(08:39):
yeah, yeah, yeah, Iam all right. His mother asked
me to help. Oh, nowlooked at him. The kids got into
trouble. Sure his mother won't believemost mothers won't. But but this looks
fishy. Why because if Biff admitsthis, he goes to prison. That's
the and I did. But ifhe thought he had a chance to stay
(09:01):
out, don't you think you'd tryto fight. Maybe he's looking for a
light wrap. I don't believe it. You got any ideas? No,
And I can't help my department sumicide. Yeah, I know. Well,
thanks for the information. Don't mentionit. I'll see you later. I
(09:28):
thought about it some more, andthe more it went around in my head,
the more it looked funny. fIFseemed scared, could almost eager to
take the rap for a breaking anentry job. Why why do that?
If he knew what't in prison?I want to see the owner of the
store, and well, he wasn'tsure it was Bill. But I didn't
make any difference either because the policehad a dimission of guilt. So I
(09:52):
went home, let myself into myapartment. You don't need to light him
close that door's a draft. Itcatch cold easy. If we're going to
get better acquainted. We should seeeach other. Don't you think I don't
want to make any more friends?Well do you haven't? Okay? So
(10:13):
yeah, thanks? I love acigarette, don't like no match? Shame
to your face. It'll get by. Just make sure that yours does.
Am I supposed to figure that one? You already did? Yeah, I
guess it. Look I went tohow'd you get any here? Ain't you
(10:35):
ever gonna let me to? I'mjust curious, that's all. Okay,
I get a pass key, askeleton key. You're satisfied? Oh?
Sure, you mind? If Italk now, I'd be charmed. What
do we talk about? You?That's a very interesting subject. I was
born to poor but wealthy parents ina small, large back in a couple
of days and we'll kill each other. All fine, I'll have a cake
(10:58):
baked. What do you want nothing. I'm a very easy guy to please.
It's a virtue, and I takeit you don't have many of those.
Yeah, you're awful impolite Holliday.Oh you know me? H lay
off the keering kit. So that'sthe purpose of this charming visit. The
(11:18):
other two guesses you don't need Isuppose not Okay, just remember, lay
off the keering kit and if Idon't want to er answer me your question,
Winnie Gladly, is a guy's booksworth more when he's dead than when
he's your life? Certainly? ButUtchin stops limited supply greater than the demand.
(11:41):
Okay, just don't make your airsrich people and Hugh could do that,
Holliday, real easy. It's somethingto think about, isn't he.
Yeah, I stay right away,eh, I'm going, Oh must you?
It's been so romantic conversation with amysterious stranger in the dark. I
(12:03):
could have brought flowers, but you'llremember that a lot longer. Okay,
that did it? Now I knewFifth had a motive for admitting the robbery.
What the motive was, there wasa different color and a different horse.
I turned on the light. Huh, I pleasant partner. That little
(12:28):
tit had said left a reminder hisring had cut into my cheek and left
the march. For a couple ofhours, I thought and thought. Finally
I figured out an angle, butI had to see Fifth again to tie
it up. So the next morningI went back to see the kid.
Just as I was rounding the cornerof the carter okaith had company. The
(12:52):
voice of that turtle was the sameas the guy who had played tag with
me the night before, and hehad a ring on his finger, a
big ring that got a sight.Let him pass behind, and I went
to biff you again. Uh huh, I am I want to talk to
(13:16):
you, but I don't want totalk to you. Mister had company?
Didn't you company? No? No, no, no, I didn't come
on. Who is her? Biffm pal? A friend of mine?
And get out of here and mindyour own business. I am your pal
gave me this, okay, sowe hung one on you and I didn't
(13:39):
like it. So you should learnto mind your own business. I told
you listen. I was asking tothis by your mother. She don't know
what she's doing. I mean, let her alone. If you're trying to
be a tough guy and it justdoesn't hang right on you, so grow
into it. Sure. Sure, that's what I'm afraid of. That's what
(14:00):
your mother's a faid of shot.I'm beat it, and have you come
around here again. I'll harbor theguard to back you out, all right,
all right, then I'll talk toyou. No, no, don't
go nourish she's all right now,but but what but nothing? I'm beat
it? Are you going? Ordo I call a guard to throw you
(14:22):
out of here? Okay, Biff, I'll go. Biff is afraid for
his mother that much, I couldguess, and he was willing to go
to prison rather than I'd robbed thatstore. But how could a thing like
that time with a mug would cometo see me? A robbery was cheap
(14:43):
stuff? Not likely that I'm hoodlehim like my visitor would be mixed up
in him. He's been taking arap for him. That couldn't be.
So I went back to kling.Still beating your brains out? Eh?
I have other people do it forme now, Yeah? Yeah, because
see that nasty cut. Let melook at your rogue scamery. Think an
old guy who's fludging it might recognizehim. I got a short look at
(15:09):
him in the jail to day.Okay, yeah, look for these.
See anybody you know not yet gotit? Yeah? Who is this that?
Let's see named Gilly sister strong armhood? Who's he working for? Freelance
(15:33):
artist? Anybody can hire him?Hi priced not cheap? It explains it.
It does, okay, let meyou know it Look, whoever is
behind this didn't want to use anyof his own mugs, So you hired
this Gilly to intimidate me. Ican pick him up for you scare the
rest of them off. So what'snext besides best of faith for his mother
(15:58):
cling that kids? But I thinkher why? I don't know. If
you make a move to pick upGilly, that'll make Biff's mother a sure
set up. It makes sense.I listened to me a favor. Will
you just have one of your boy'stailed Gilly when he lights someplace? Let
me know, wait him minute,Wait a minute, you could get hurt.
I was, what are you gonnado? Stick my nose in where
(16:21):
it belongs. I don't like Gillyand I don't like what he stands for.
And now back to delinquent stilemma, another Box thirteen adventure with Alan ladd
is Dan HOLLI. I waited, and finally it came called him thing,
(16:48):
telling me where I could pick upGilly. I didn't followed him. Maybe
I was being followed too, butI had to take that chance. For
all there was nothing we could pinon Gilly, just entry and assault.
But that wouldn't get to the thingthat was putting biff in advice. Anyway,
I followed Jilly watched him go intoLofice building on where he got off
the elevator, waited until he left, and then yeah, I'd like to
(17:17):
see mister, mister, mister whomister in the inner office. What's your
name? Cecil Hauling? Hauling?Yes, just a moment. Oh,
(17:41):
thank you, thank you. Yourname is Howling? Yes, sir,
yes, sir, it is allright. What can I do for him?
Need any brushes? Brushes? Brushes? I you see, I carry
a full live Hey what is thisthe bush off my own little joke?
(18:03):
Are you crazy? Well, mistermister, what's your wrangle? Howling?
Oh? Do I need one?Who sent you here? Nobody? I
found it all by myself. Andstay right there, Eddie Mac watch this
Kerry Hello, Eddie, Hello,Mack now talk mister Hawling. Okay,
(18:29):
uh oh? This is a gag, is it? Yeah? I guess
I'm in the wrong office. Iwas supposed to pull a rib on somebody
and I well, I guess Igot in the wrong office. Well,
sorry about it. It's the minute. Yeah, who sent you here?
Nobody? I told you this isa gag. I guess it back by
it. You must have tried thegag too often. Somebody pasted you.
(18:52):
Oh no, no, no,no, beat it? Well, thanks,
thankful lot. I wondered if Italked myself out of that one.
I didn't because when I got downstairsto my car, I noticed a man
following me. But I found outsomething. Gilly was working for the character
in that office, and who washe? It took me two hours to
(19:14):
shake the shadow, and I gotback there playing and told him you crazy
fool, you you dope, ButI found it, didn't I sure?
Sure you found it? Listen, they still don't know who I was.
How do you know that he wouldn'tlet me out of that office? Fling?
You're sure you ditched that shadow?Yeah, I'm sure. But if
Gilly gets back, he'll find outand he knows you before that happens.
What's the lineup? The man yousaw us? Pete Boston rackets here gangster,
(19:38):
he got a record and then wecould pin on him. He's smart.
Then little guys take the rap forhim. He pays off when they
get out. And what's his anglein all this? How's he tied up
with Biff? Karen? My kids? Certainly is a member of his gang,
at least I don't think so.It's got to be an angle.
Wait on, wait a minute, what did you go? Listen? It
(20:00):
was a big fur warehouse robbery. It looked like one of Oslo's jobs.
But there's nothing to tie him in, and there was a watchman killed.
When is that robbery him the nightof the sixteenth? What time about eleven
thirty sixteenth? That's the night ofthe store robbery, the one Biffs admitting
(20:21):
to. Yeah. Sure suppose thekid was passing on his way home from
that movie and saw the whole thing. But he's afraid to talk because I
threatened his mother. If he doesthe dirty heels. Listen, I'll send
offs. No, wait, dothat you put Biff's mother on the spot.
Get Biff here instead. I didn'tdare go to fifth because I might
(20:47):
be followed. The Kling sent forhim in the Kling's office. I don't
know nothing. Let me go backnow, Biff, your testimony is the
only thing that'll give us a break. I robbed that store that night.
Now let me go back. Listento me. I ain't gonna listen to
nobody. What are you trying todo? I I told you I robbed
(21:07):
the police. What if we'd tellyou the police of arrested the real robber.
I won't work. I know youhaven't because I would have been let
out. Bif we'll protect your motherand you, there ain't nothing to protect
playing come here with you. Letme talk to him alone, please,
(21:32):
Okay? Then go ahead. Ihope the day comes soon when kids will
realize that the police aren't their enemies, but they're friends. I ain't gonna
do any good mister. It's gotto Biff, not listen, don't say
anything until I finished. When yougo ahead. Now, you're protecting your
(22:00):
mother, but you're also protecting somethingelse. Huh m hm, A gang
of vicious men. You're protecting themfrom the law, you're protecting murders.
Bif you're giving them the chance togo out and do the same thing all
over again. Don't you see that? I ain't gonna say. Nothing.
That I want to do is belet alone. I want to go back
(22:22):
to the jail. Now, letme go. Oh please, Biff.
You're you're about sixteen and you've gota whole life ahead of you. But
if you go to prison to protectcrooks, what will you have a record.
Oh sure, they'll say you didn'ttalk, you didn't squeal. They'll
make a great guy out of you. But what'll it make of the men
(22:44):
You're protecting a bunch of arrogant, cocky parasites who got away with it.
Shut out, you, shut up, Let me alone. I ain't gonna
say nothing. I ain't clang clang, Yeah, I'm finished. Okay,
side take the kid back. Well, no, he's our only chance to
(23:17):
put Vosdan in his gang where theycan grow a nice coat of mold.
Yeah, I know, but he'stoo scared. He won't talk. Clean
You wouldn't talk if it killed himto keep crying. We've got the whole
thing in our laps. We've gotvoslon on a murder rap. If that
kid talks, I know, nomatter. Listen, I hate to say
this. We've got the double crossbit. What have you got mine?
(23:41):
Then I listen. Don't let anybodyinto see him. Keep all the visitors
away, all right, because he'sgoing to talk? Are you crazy?
Listen? I got friends at theStar Times. They're going to break a
story. Little smoke bosling off inthe open where you can smash him.
You mean tread a story about thekid talking. Yeah, that's it.
But his mother. We won't breakthis story until I'm there with her.
Listen, you're crazy, fool. Those guys don't kid. Once they say
(24:04):
they're gonna do a thing, they'lldo it. You'll let that story hit
the street and they'll go through withit if it takes ten years. I
know, I know, But weknow Biff won't talk, so keep visitors
away from him. BOS will tryto get to his mother, don't you
see that's the only way you canreally keep Biff from talking. Get his
mother and hold her until the kiddecides to keep quiet. But no Butts
will make the story look as thoughsensational developments are expected in the fur Warehouse
(24:26):
murder, just enough to make bosand think the kid might talk. I
went to the Star Times and picksup the story by promising the editor of
the whole thing would be his frontpage scoop and on the level I waited
until the proof will run. Thestory was just what we wanted, only
(24:48):
a hint that developments were expected. Then I drove to the neighborhood where Biff
and his mother lived. There wereno police around. It had to look
legitimate. Then I went up tomissus Karne. It'll be all right.
Stories on the street and I'm aKaren and we should be getting company.
(25:08):
Oh I'm scared, not for me, but if he'll be all right.
But they can't get to him,and when this is all over, they
won't be able to what if whatif something happens? It won't turn up
a light. Quick, get intobed. Tend to be asleep. I
(25:29):
can't be quiet. Why there, but tend to be asleep. Now you
(25:56):
wake up? Come on, wakeup you never mind, get up,
get dressed. Come on, whoare you? I said, never mind,
get dressed. My clothes are inthe other room. Get him.
Not the light. You don't needlight. Go ahead, get your clothes.
Don't close the door between the roomsand stay in the light from outside
(26:18):
and step on it still standing inthe draft. Kelly nice video again in
the time trying a gun gilling,I don't know, all right? To
you? To you all right?Jan sure as long as I had his
gun hand, he was a littlehandicapped turning the light with your clean right,
(26:42):
hey sick? Let the kid comein? Oh good night, mom?
You all right? Are you right? Oh? Mom? Let please
don't call me baby, please,I'm so worried. Oh mom, cling
thing? But yeah, what's up? Are you all right? Shoe boy?
(27:10):
You're smiling? The grand jury returneda murder indictment against Pete Boslin and
ten others of his gang. Today, evidence presented by the District Attorney is
(27:33):
sure to result in conviction of thenotorious racketeer. Well that doesn't, Susie
Gee? How did it feel tobe alone in the dark with that awful
man, mister Holiday. I didn'thave time to think about it, Susie.
How would you have felt? Well, I would be cute, mister
Holiday. Oh, good night,Susie. Next week, same time,
(27:57):
Through the courtesy of Paramount Pictures,Alan ladds diars As Dan Holiday and Watch's
thirteen. Wat's thirteen is directed byRichard Sandville, with an original story by
Russell Hughes and original music composed unconductedby Rudy Schrager. The part of Susie
is played by Sylvia Picker and thatof Bluetenant Kling by Edmund McDonald. Production
(28:18):
is supervised by Verne Carstenson. Thisis an afire production from Hollywood Watch for
Alan Ladd in his latest Paramount Picture, Welcome back. I love that conversation
with Gillie, truly a great heroon Thug Dialog, very hard boil.
Also one loss message for kids abouttrusting the police that many of police shows
(28:44):
such as Dragnet tried to communicate aswell. Also, how do you want
to give a status update on theseserials I've considered. I've added three more
shows to those I've decided to do. Sam Spay, Casey crom photographer,
and Christopher London say shows that Iwill do just because life is funny and
you never know what tomorrow holds, but these are on my list. A
(29:08):
Spade was very interesting, and Ihave to admit that I was surprised by
it. I think my big concerncoming in after watching The Maltese Falcon is
that Spade was the type of characterI could imagine easily growing really old or
really fast, because it could bejust a little bit too cold as played
(29:29):
by Bogard. I thought the characterwas intriguing for a single episode, but
trying to play it out over awhole series could be tough because it could
almost be borderline sociopathic. But Ithink Howard Duff and Steve Dunn in their
portrayals, really took the character ina good direction and really came up with
(29:52):
a winning combination. So I'll lookforward to that. And for those of
you with the app, you cantake a listen to the episode to Sam
Spade I listened to before definitively decidingto go ahead and do it. And
if you have the premium subscription youcan take a listen to samples from all
