(03:59):
Box third Team and Dan Holiday's newestadventure, Double Right Cross. Johnny Cappelli
contender for the middle of the Crown. A big, overgrown kid with a
smile full of white teeth and aheart full of kindness for everybody. Johnny
Cappelli, I never heard of sincemister Holiday. Well, they don't read

(04:21):
the sport pages, Susie. Huh. They played duck on a rock on
the beach at Anzio for keeps.I saw him a little while ago,
call him my Box thirteen night, and I guess he saw the ad in
the start time and you're going tofight her? Yes, that's it,
Susie. Did he came to adead Fatsie? Ah, There's nothing I

(04:42):
can do with that one. Solong, Sussie. In the driving rain.
I headed for the stadium and mycab ran fenders first into a traffic
jam. Don't know he was tryingto get through. So I paid off
the cabin and started to flow therest of the way to the stadium.
I look at my watch. Twominutes after ten, the first round of

(05:02):
the fight was underway. By thetime I hit ringside, people were already
on their feet leaving. There waspulling and talk. Capelli knocked out.
Capelli acted like a fourth rader.Johnny Cappelli laid down. I pushed my
way back in the dressing rooms witha little knot of people around one door,

(05:25):
and the girl was rattling the knotand calling Johnny, Johnny, please
open the door. Johnny does nomatter what's going on. How are you,
Peter? Now, I'm a friendof Johnny. Who are you his
manager? I mean I was,but not after tonight. He loses one
fight and you're quitting, yeah, like he did when he comes out of
it. Tell him he can takethis contract and tell him you're Helen.

(05:47):
Yes, please go away. Johnnycan't see any report is now, please
go with you. I looked athim, so this was tell him the
girl Johnny dreamed about, talked about, raved about, then talk some more
about all a while he and Iwere trying to miss the casually list in
Italy. The girl he sent adiamond brooch, fought with a year's pay,

(06:09):
hearted like a miser. Well iflooks cottage, she was worth it.
She rattled a knot again. Please, Johnny, it's Helen Johnny.
May I try Johnny? Johnny? This is Damn Dan Holiday. Oh,
yes, you recognize the name.Yes, Johnny, talk of you.

(06:29):
What's the matter with Johnny? Hewon't come out Holiday. Huh? Who
are you Helen's brother? You seeyou can get Johnny out of here,
Holiday, Johnny, Johnny, JohnnyCapelli. It's Dan Johnny. Is there
any other way out of this dressingroom? Yeah? The window? This
is the ground floor. He couldhave got out of the window. Look
both of you, Helen and dYeah all right, Eddie, get somebody

(06:49):
with a kid to open this door. Go ahead, Eddie, step on
it. Now. What's all thisabout, Helen? I don't know it?
Just soon's the fight was overcame wisconscious. Yes, he walked, but
we got the door here, andhe broke ahead and then ran in and
locked the door. All right,Helen, all right, not take it

(07:10):
easy. We'll find out what's happening. When we got into the dressing room,
Johnny was gone and Eddie was rightthe window was open. I couldn't
figure it. Johnny Capelli a kidwhose courage was a plus, A kid
who went through Anzio Salerno Casino.Sure he was scared like because like the

(07:36):
rest of us. But he didn'twhimper and he didn't run out. Ever,
it just didn't figure him. Helendidn't make it anymore clear. No,
I don't know. I don't knowwhy I ran away. Well,
I take it easy, sis.Johnny must have had a reason, Yes,
he must have. Now listen, where'd he go? He's hell,
I don't know, and we callthere. That's not good any other place?

(07:59):
Think, I don't know? Anny? All right, where can I
get in touch with you? Later? Three eight seven? Christopher place?
Good, you're right there. I'llfind Johnny. It was tough, but
I finally tracked on a cab driver. I remember picking up a man back
of the stadium, seem well drunk, he said, took him to a

(08:22):
little hotel on the other side oftown. It could be Johnny. So
I went there and go work,Johnny. Good. Listen to me,
Johnny, this is Dan Dan Holiday, damn ye'll let me in, Johnny,
No, go a worry, let'sgo worry wire you What are you

(08:43):
trying to do? Johnny? Looking? Please? Where you go? Worry?
Look head? Let me in.I'll break in, Johnny. How

(09:03):
No light, close the door? Why did you come? Why do
you think? Listen? Nobody elseknows where I am? Do they?
No? Nobody helen? No?Where is she ho? I'm waiting waiting
for me to call her. Butyou're not gonna what's the matter, Johnny,
Dan, I'm sick? What doyou mean? I don't know?

(09:28):
Look Dan, it was swelly youto come. There's nobody I'd want to
see any more than you, Butnot now, Dan, some other time,
but not tonight. You're gonna time. What it's from? Johnny?
All right? Turn on the lightand take a look. Johnny. Yeah,
better with the light off, isn'tit. I listen? If I
got beating your heart kad hurt badly. I gotta get a doctor. No,

(09:50):
I said, yeah, no,you got a doctor him? So
help me dall them. I'll killyou. Johnny. Hello, desk Clark,
listen, get a doctor to roomten right away. And that means
right now, all right, misterHoliday. He'll sleep for a while.

(10:13):
Now, how long before he wakesup? Doctors? Five or six hours?
Maybe longer. How badly is heheard? Well, it's hard to
tell him. He took quite abeating. Who is he a friend of
mine? Is he fight? Yes? Sort of? Well, I look,
doctor, as long as there's nogunshot wound you, you don't have

(10:35):
to report this to you. No, but let's leave it that way.
Then, huh. You will beback in the morning. Yes, I'll
make a more thorough examination. Then. He was too hysterical to do much
with tonight. But I think he'dbecome and when he awakens then there's nothing.
Nothing too bad, I don't thinkso bruises, concusions, and his
eyes, I what's wrong with hiseyes. I'll see you in the morning.

(10:58):
Good night, miss Holiday, goodnight, Thanks doctor. I sat
by Johnny's bed and watched Unny.I didn't call Helen because well, for
some reason, Johnny didn't want anybodyto know. I don't know what.
Maybe I'd find out when Johnny cameto maybe he wouldn't tell me, and

(11:22):
I just couldn't see Johnny running outon anything. There had to be something
wrong, something big. I satin a chair alongside the bed and thought
about it, and I guess Ifell asleep because the next thing I knew,
I uh, oh, oh,just a minute, good morning,

(11:45):
Good morning doctor. Is he stillsleeping? Yeah, maybe for another hour
or so, but I'll wait. Thanks, he'll be all right. Well,
I'd like to ask a few questionswhen he awakens. I don't think
there's anything seriously wrong, but well, i'll wait. What are you getting

(12:07):
in? I don't know. You'llhave to wait too, Okay. Meanwhile,
I'll go on and get some coffee. You can use some too,
catching Yes, thanks, I'll beright back. I thought i'd be right
back. When I got down tothe street, something changed my plans.

(12:28):
There was a news stand, andthe first thing that hit my eye was
a subheadline said boxing commission halls upCapelli purse Capelli disappears after fight fiasco.
I hurried to a phone called theStar. Time's got a few strings pulled,
and a half hour later I wassitting across from the commissioner at his
home. It's exactly what interest doyou have in this, mister Holiday.

(12:48):
I'm a friend of Johnny's. Isee all right. You wants to have
something important to tell me this earlyin the morning. I want you to
tell me something, COMMISSI what Whyis the commission holding up Johnny's purse because
we believe the fight was not quiteon the level? Meaning do you think

(13:09):
Johnny threw it? We don't know. We're going to look at the movies
this morning. Johnny didn't throw thatfight, did you see it? No?
I didn't, But now do youknow? Oh, because I know
Johnny. That's your only reason.I think it's enough, Commissioner. Look,
mister Holliday, we have one jobto do, keep the boxing game
fair and square as a service tothe fans who pay their money to see
good, clean sport. Capella wasat ten to one favorite last night.

(13:33):
A big bet placed on Brennan wouldbring a lot of money to anyone,
meaning Johnny might have been on Brennan. It's been done, and the Commission
is in business to see that itdoesn't happen anymore until Capelli proves otherwise,
we'll say he threw that fight.I didn't believe it, but Johnny lost,

(13:56):
he lost badly, and he didrun out in and he wouldn't tell
why. I went back to thelittle hotel and ran unto the doctor.
Was just leaving. Oh, misterHoliday. That cup of coffee took a
long time. It wasn't coffee, was Johnny. He'll be all right at
all? No. Last night whenI examined him, something puzzled me.

(14:20):
What his eyes pupils dilating? Andthis morning, when I examined him again,
I asked a few questions, whatabout your friend had every symptom of
bellamine poisoning last night? The pupilsof his eyes were dilated. And wait
a minute, wait a minute, that would affect his sight, wouldn't yes
jaken Internally bellamine is poisonous quarter grainingup his feet and lesson the dryness of

(14:43):
throat, nervousness. In other words, if someone gave him bellamine, he'd
have a hard time sing, verydifficult. And if he were a boxer,
If he were a boxer and wentin the ring with his eyes in
that condition, he wouldn't be ableto see his opponent. Now back to

(15:09):
box thirteen and a double right crosswith Alan Ladd as Dan Holiday. So
Johnny lost the fight because he couldn'tsee Brennan. But why did he run
on? Why didn't he want anyoneto see him? Right? I thought
I was going blind, Dan,Brennan was just a shadow that was beating
me. Oh, why didn't youquit? Why didn't you say something?

(15:31):
Because I didn't want anybody to knowit was gonna be that way? I'd
take it along, noble. Huh. Look, Dan, I waited a
long time for that fight. Youwant a crack at the title. Helen
waited with me. If I wasgoing blind, I wasn't gonna let her
know. Stick with me. Jurea kid like you would think that way.

(15:52):
Now listened to me, Johnny.Somebody fed you the stuff to impair
your sight, somebody who wanted youto lose that fight. Who you're crazy?
Dan? What did you eat?Yesdi eat the day of the fight
nothing, just a little breakfast andthe rest of the day nothing liquids,
water, milk, of course, not. No fighter fills himself up with
liquids. Makes him LOGI heavy onhis feet. But Johnny, the balla

(16:14):
mane had to be given to youjust before he went into the ring any
earlier in the day and the effectwould have borne off before the fight.
Why don't you lay off, Dan, I'm telling you I didn't need anything
or drink anything, not for hoursbefore the fight. But you had no
No, No, I know whatI did. I look. Maybe it
was my eyes. Maybe it iswhat I thought. I got hit in
Italy, Dan. Maybe it's notthat the doctor knows what he's talking about.

(16:37):
Johnny. Somebody fagged that. Stop. Oh you tell me nobody.
I didn't eat drink. Do Ihave to go over all that again?
No, but I am you ain'there, Johnny. Johnny was a ten
to one favorite of a Brennan andsomebody played that for all it was worth,

(17:00):
and it looked like it was wortha lot of money if the bet
was big enough. A little whilelater, I was talking to Brennan,
crazy holiday. Maybe the guy wasn'tin shape, Love Brennan, Johnny was
in condition. So you're telling methat somebody helped him him? Mini me,
No, no, no, I'mjust asking. And I'm telling I
got one hundred and twenty fights ona clean sheet. None of them was
shady. I don't play that weight. I'm not saying that. I'm only

(17:22):
trying to find out who could havegiven Johnny that drug? While I wasn't
near his dressing room. I didn'tdidn't even see him after we waited in
that afternoon. All right, ithad to be in his food food.
No fight is going to eat rightbefore a match. I drink water.
It just winches his mouth, that'sall. What else, Brennan, if
he's training right, nothing else, but if he gets thirsty. I told

(17:45):
you Jess. Winches his mouth. He drinks water, makes him heavy.
That's why a fighter choose gum allday. It gives him on work.
Yeah, gum, Why gum? That's it, Brennan, that's it.
Sure A chewed gum all day beforethe fight, and you're dressing room.

(18:07):
I must have been chewing gum,I remember. Go ahead, Johnny,
how are you gonna say nothing?Yes, you were nor It wasn't.
Look there's only one way the drugcould have been given to you. Now
you've got to think who gave yougum just before you went in that ring.
I didn't have any, Johnny? What are you hiding nothing? You're
going to say something a second agoto beg your manager give it? No?

(18:32):
Who else is with you, justBaker, I was Helen. Shut
up? Dan? Did she giveyou any gum? Forget the whole thing?
I'm going blind, that's all.Ah, Yeah, not beat it.
Helen gave you that gum. Shewas in your dressing room before the
fight. Wasn't she cut it out? Dan? That's why you shut up
before you remembered, And the chewinggum was the only way that drug had
been given to you because you didn'teat, You didn't drink water anything else
before you went in that ring. But maybe fifteen minutes before Helen handed you

(18:56):
the gum, didn't shut up?Dan, shut up and forget the whole
thing. Hell on, Johnny, she gave you the gum, didn't she
didn't she? You? You stillgot a good right, Johnny? I'm
sorry, Dan, Sure, sure, let's forget it, but I didn't

(19:26):
want to forget it. I leftJohnny and went to see Baker, who's
manager. I didn't tell him whati'd found out. I just listened.
Sure, I brought the kid upfrom the hammer and egg plums. But
after last night we washed up.Johnny was a ten to one favorite.
Was yeah, a match with thechamp? Next? Did you bet on
Johnny. I never bet even ifyou thought Johnny was going to win.

(19:48):
What are you driving at somebody whostood to make a killing of Johnny lost?
Do you're ask him for a cloudholiday? I just had one.
What about it, Helen? Iwant about her? All right, Baker,
here the cards. Johnny went inthe ring last night. I sure
about to lose. What Yeah, that's right. He was drug He couldn't
see Brennan from the first bell untilhe was counted out. He was fighting

(20:08):
on instinct and courage. Well youhave given me. There was nobody in
his dressing room but me and Helen. Yeah, now what about her?
Not Sep? Whence I walk inon the tour him and well there was
heaven a fight. They clammed upwhen I walked in. But I heard

(20:32):
something about a brooch brooch, diamondbrooch, the one Johnny center from Italy.
Maybe all I know is what Isaid. That's enough, thanks,
Baker. Maybe you'll have a chapon your hands. Yet the next stop
is to see Helen. I Iwasn't sure how to handle this, and

(20:55):
all I had to go on wasthe fact that Johnny was covering for why
and they'd had a fight over thatbrooch again? Why? So the big
question was did she or did shenot double crossed Johnny. Her first words
to me were, Dan, youfound Johnny? Maybe maybe? But what
do you mean? What's the matter? Is he all right, he'll be

(21:19):
all right. He's in a littlehotel. Then take me there. I
want to see him, Dan,Maybe he doesn't want to see you.
What Johnny did he say that? No? Well, what are you doing?
Why don't you take me to him? Are you talking like this?
Dan? How much do you wenton the fight? Elen? What do
you mean? I watched her faceclosely after I asked either she was the

(21:40):
new Sarah Bernhard or she was inthe clear. For a couple of seconds
she stared at me and then that'sa filthy thing to say. Yes,
I know, but I've got somethingto find out. And what did joke
to find out? By asking methat? I hope to find out?
Who made a killing on a fight? By making Johnny I set up for
Brennan. He was ten to onegood odds for somebody who'd lay a good
size bet on Brennan. You meanyou you think I'd bet against Johnny?

(22:03):
Did you? That's not worth answeringall right. Look, Johnny was knocked
out because he was drugged. Hecouldn't see, and he was drugged only
a few minutes before he went intothe ring. Baker, No, a
manager who was bringing up a championdoesn't sell him, and at least only
me, is that it? Maybe? And I bet everything I had on
Brennan? Is that your story? What's yours? Helen? I have none.

(22:26):
If that's what you believe, believeit. But tell me where Johnny
is. I promised I wouldn't.Oh, no, Johnny can't believe it.
Where's that brooch he sent you broach? Yeah, that's right, the
one he sent from Italy, threethousand dollars brookes that bring about fifteen hundred
on a pawn shop and fifteen hundredat ten to one. Well, it

(22:51):
seems to be my day for takingit. I'm sorry. Didn't you give
Johnny chewing gum just before he wentinto the ring? What did you say?
Chewing gum? Johnny wouldn't tell me, but I know you gave it
to him. Yes, you youadmit it. Yes, that was the
only way you could have been drugged, and you admit it, Yes,

(23:14):
I admit it doesn't make sense allright, it doesn't make sense. You're
so right, mister Holiday. Nothingmakes sense nothing. Don't go back and
tell Johnny, tell everybody on this. I couldn't get two of them,

(23:37):
Johnny and Helen, knowing it musthave been the gum, and Johnny not
wanting to tell me, then Helencoming right out and saying she gave it
to him. Okay, there wasone answer, and I hunted, fought
in the shape of that brooch.I called Lieutenant Cling at headquarters and got
him to do me a favor.Took almost the rest of the day,
but late that afternoon Brooch. Yes, you see police car, but I

(24:00):
assure you I did not receive stolengoods in my shop. The police know
that, I Claire, I don'tworry. Has a broach been redeemed yet?
No? No, Look, allI want to see is a slipper
who signed a broach in here.I haven't ready. I thought it would
be the police who would come. It's right here, Yeah you are.
There's no mistake about this. Ohno, no, why I let him

(24:22):
have a thousand dollars Johnny, athousand and you're sure, yes, yes,
yes, there there's where he signedhis name. John John Capelli.
No, that couldn't be right, unless unless Johnny was afraid he couldn't make
a fake fight look good. AndI wanted to make sure. But where

(24:47):
did Helen figure? And why? Why? Then it hit me Johnny protects
Helen? Helen let she did it? It made so little sense it began
to clear. I checked with bettingagents and found one who took a bet
on Brennan, a bet of athousand dollars, a ten to one.

(25:08):
He remembered who placed the bets sowell, I gave me one more call
to make back. I went toHelen's apartment. Hello, yes, oh
hi holiday? Come on? Ohthanks, Eddie, sister home? No,

(25:29):
he grab a chair? Haven't youseen her? Oh? Yes,
yes earlier. Why aren't you gonnaask me about Johnny? Oh? Sure,
sure? Where is he? Iknow? What about him? I
mean he's okay? Yeah, yeah, he's okay. Oh that's swell.
You know a holiday. I couldn'tfigure a guy like Johnny doing something like

(25:52):
that. No, neither could I, Eddie. That's why I knew he
didn't. What Yeah right? Heahhave a stick of gum? Oh no,
I never use it. Good forthe nerves, yeah, that's what
they say. Well that's what youcome to see me about her. Maybe

(26:12):
you like the gamble, don't you? Eddie? Gamble? Oh? Sometimes
why ever get into deep? Youhad to steal to make yourself even?
What kind of a crack? Isthat? Nasty? Just as nasty as
stealing his sister's brooch? What didshe tell you? Nothing? She had
a fight with Johnny. Maybe henoticed she didn't have the brooch, asked

(26:34):
her about it. Maybe she hadher ideas about where it was. Yeah,
so what so she knew and gaveyou a break. But you had
different ideas, Eddie. You pawnedthe brooch, signed Johnny's name to the
slip, then bet a thousand againstJohnny. Hire you nuts? You're off
your rocker. Tell you what,Eddie. Let's you and I take a
tip of the pawnbroker. Then we'llgo to the betting agent where you place

(26:55):
the bed. Maybe I won't lookso much off my rocker. Then,
huh, all right, so whatI got a break? I'll redeem the
broaching. But what are you lookingat me like that? For I took
two on the chin to day?Maybe it's my turn odd to give Eddie?
You lay off now. Sis won'tprosecuting, and Johnny wouldn't either.

(27:17):
She won't marry him if he didn't. It's not the brooch, Eddie.
It's the chewing gum, the gumyou gave your sister to give Johnny the
drug gum doing show your bet.You can't prove nothing. You can't,
Eddie. You and I are goingto the boxing commissioner. You're gonna talk.
No, I ain't. Either thator I tell Johnny everything and leave
him in the room alone with you. Oh, Eddie, get your top

(27:42):
coat too. It's kind of chillyoutside. Well, Susie, as they
say in the books, all's wellthat ends well. See it's so romantic.

(28:03):
Johnny and Helen getting married, Johnnygetting another crack at the championship in
US. What's the matter, misterHoliday? Oh, Susie, my jaw
is really sore. Johnny hung anice right cross on me. What's the
right cross? H Well, it'sum here. Look put up your hands
this week? Yeah now look Ileaded my left like this and you like

(28:30):
that. Oh, I'm sorry. That's your holiday, mister Holliday. I
oh, good night, mister Holiday. Next week, same time. Allan

(29:33):
Welcome Back. I don't think I'veseen a detective knocked out by the
Secretary before. That was a first, but a very good episode. And
with the writing E Jack Newman,we heard that name in the credits.
E Jack Newman is while one ofthe big writers of old Tom Ray Your

(30:00):
Detective stories, he wrote scripts forYours truly, Johnny Dollers, Sam Spade,
Richard Diamond, Jeff Regan Investigator. So this is this is a guy
who really contributed to the cannon ofso many shows. And I think,
as I mentioned on a previous show, it's the consistency of these same writers

(30:22):
writing for different shows that is whywe have so many really good shows out
there. This one has a lotof interesting facts about boxing. Um,
those who have been in it morerecently may be able to attest to if
the training methods have changed any Evenwith Rockies training methods. I've seen at

(30:48):
least parts of the first five Rockymovies and never got the idea that it
was that strenuous. Um. Butanyway, another fun episode. Nice nice
episode from Dan Holiday. All right, well before we run, we got
a comment from our Facebook page, and we'll go ahead and share that.

(31:11):
Jocelyn Romeraz rights in Hi Adam.I have listened to your podcast for a
