(03:09):
the team care of the Star,Times and clothes. You'll find enough money
to do what I want you todo. Go to the Mason auction rooms
and bid on an old Chinese teakwoodbox. I must have that box.
And if you get it for me, wait for further you get it for

(03:29):
me, wait for further instructions. No address, no signature, just wait
for further instructions. Well, asBobby Burns would say, the best laid
plans of mice and men sometimes gowrong. And Bobby Burns knew what he
was talking about. And now backto Box thirteen and Dan Holiday's newest adventure

(04:03):
box. It doesn't sound very interesting, mister Holiday. You never can tell,
Susie. Now suppose this teak woodbox contains the Chamillion Crown jewels,
and suppose international jewels these are afterthem? And I get mixed up and
go on, mister Holiday, thatfounded wonderful box. What happens then?

(04:25):
Well? And then I what amI saying? I must be out of
my head? Well, I thinkyou should go to the auction I need.
Auctions are very interesting. I mightto one one. They're like a
gin Rumning Todale, the gin,Susie, that's extra. Anyway, Maybe
I'll see what's in that teak woodbox. You'll be able to reach me

(04:45):
at the Mason Auction rooms. Wellright there, for the plans begin to
get twisted. I took a wrongturn and landed at the Mason aux rooms.
After the sales started, they justsold a teak wood box. Sold
it to a scared looking little guy. It was about fifty five tale and

(05:06):
he kept looking around the room whilethey wrapped the box for him. It
wasn't big that box, maybe aboutthe size of a cigar box. By
the way the little man hugged itto him when he left, it could
have been made of bradium. Okay, So I missed the boat, or
I mean the box, and Iwanted something from my trip across town.
So I followed the pale little guyfrom the room. He looked around and

(05:29):
saw me. I raised my handto signal, and that did it.
He spin it out to the sidewalklike a rabbitter. I went after him.
I wish I hadn't, because whenhe saw him in to follow,
he took a couple of wild looksaround and then hey, look, he
ran across the street against the trafficsignal and right into the path of a
car. What happened here? Anyway, I pushed my way through the crowd
to kettle the little guy. Iwas sliding on the street. I couldn't

(05:53):
helping. He wear right in frontof me. He read against the life.
Hey, hey, did any funny? See you have been any funny?
Yeah? I saw it. Itwasn't George for no, it wasn't
my faull. I was trying tostop. I wasn't going first, I
was just going to make the timeswell. Well, was he hyped bad?
The little man looked as though hewas badly hurt. Somebody sent her
an ambulance. Then I then Iremember the box. I looked around for

(06:15):
it. I was on the street. He didn't have it anymore. I
looked over the crowd. Nobody hadit. Then I noticed the cab at
the hack stand of the curb, and getting into it was a woman with
red hair, and under her armwas the factage. Before I could push
my way back to the crowd, the cab was gone, but I saw
it snumb Okay, It'd be easyto check and find the driver's name and

(06:38):
maybe maybe ask him a few questions. I waited on the street in till
the ambulance got there. The internsaid it was probably concussion. But that
evening I drove to the Marchpot apartments. Yeah, that was where the driver
of the cabs that he took thewoman. I looked at the names of

(06:59):
the mailboxes, nine apartments in thebuilding. Well, one way to get
in was to push all the buttonsand wait for the door to quick open.
I went in, but as Idid I looked out the door.
There was a tail on me.I caught a quick glimpse of a man's
face. He hurried path, butnot before he gave me a good look.

(07:20):
Well, that teakwood box was leadingto something. After disturbing seven occupants
of seven different apartments and getting sevennasty comments, I rang one bugger.
The name underneath was Ruth Cornwall. Is that you Dommy? Yes, Ruth

(07:42):
yes? And brain? Oh goodevening. Who are you not the full
of brushman Maconny, Of course not. I've come about a teakwood box.
Will you please go? Oh?Maybe he didn't hear me. I said,
I've come about the tinkwood box,Miss Cornwall. I don't know what

(08:03):
you're talking about. And if youdon't go out, ring for the manager,
all right, ring for him?Well, is this a joke.
I don't know. That depends onyou come in. That's better. Now?
Who are you? My name's DanHoliday. Do I know you?

(08:26):
No? I don't think so,But I know you? Oh? You
do? Fromwhere from this afternoon whenyou hopped into a cab with a package
that belonged to a little man?Oh? I think if that was supposed
to be a careless lap, youneed a lot of rehearsal. What makes
you think I'm the person you're lookingfor? I just managed to catch sight

(08:46):
of that beautiful red hair of yours. Really, mister Holliday, I thought
this was a joke at first.That it's getting a little absurd. I
think you better go now. AllI want is an explanation. What's in
that box? What's in that boxmakes it so important? Well? If
I knew what box you were talkingabout, maybe I could tell you that's
good waltzing, Miss Cornwall. Youwouldn't have let me in this apartment if

(09:09):
you knew nothing about it all this, But you were scared enough to let
me come in and talk. Thatmakes sense? Why should it? Because
I could swear you seem relieved aboutsomething. Maybe maybe you were expecting someone
else to come after you. Whereare you? Of course? Not all
right? I'll wait. I don'tthink you will. Oh does this make

(09:33):
you change your mind? Guns alwayshave a habit of making a man think
twice. Just think once, misterHoliday about leaving now? Well, your
arguments are stronger than mine about getout of here quickly. You're getting more
companies. Let's see anyone planning tosneak up on you could do the same
as I did. Bring all thebuzzes, getting the building, then come
up here. But if you don'tleave all I don't think you will.

(09:56):
You're very anxious to have me getup before this company gets up here,
and you had better click that frontdoor. You'll get impatient go away if
I give it a tacks, willyou leave? Ah? Now we're getting
someplace. Okay, you're talking intoher. Wait, yeah, here it
is. I get out of hereand don't come back nothing. I'll please

(10:18):
let you go. For Heaven's sake, Please go. You got what you
wanted to leave me alone. Wedid leave me alone. If he sees
you here, all right, missCornwall, and please never come back,
never try to see me again.I don't know what it was, but

(10:39):
there was something about it. Withcornwallet put me in sympathy with her.
She needed help, wanted it,but it was as though she didn't dare
tell me why. I went downthe hall doctor round a corner and stopped
just long enough to look back andsee a man go into her apartment.
I went downstairs, out under thestreets, keeping huh, I said,
keep walking right up to that alley. Hey, what is this? I

(11:01):
think you know? But if youwant to play twenty questions, I'll let
you ask one. Let's give youa hint. Oh when you pull that
gun, I take it easy.I think you've got it caught in my
ribs. Now walk far enough? No one give me that box? What

(11:24):
box? Ain't you funny? Yeah? I do card tricks too. That's
I'm enough handed over. It seemsto be my night to play give and
take. Okay, that's better, now, good night holiday. When the
alleyways stopped spinning long enough for meto catch it, I stood up on

(11:48):
it. I looked at my watchas close as I could figure the character
tattooed my head and put me outfor a half an on it. See
what you get when you put onthat in the paper advertising friend, and
you you've got it with lumps.Well, there's nothing more I could do.
That night My head felt like theinside of a bass drum and a

(12:09):
band, and all I wanted todo was hit Betty By and let my
head rest on a nice soft pillow. Good morning, Sue, oh Milligate,
because man's been waiting for you.You again? You sleep all right?

(12:33):
Mister Holliday like a top I spun? Yeah. Do you want me
to do anything at Halliday? Iwish you could, Susie. Mister Holiday,
I know a man who wants tosee you right now? Uh huh?
Can I persuade you to come along? Do you think? Yes?
You seem to have a way aboutyou, Susie Yaigate. If I'm not

(12:54):
back in three hours, call upthe insurance, come in and get back
that last premium I paid in advance. That's an let's go holiday. Here's
holiday, mister Conry. Oh yes, please come in. Let's sit down.

(13:16):
What's the idea, Honey? Iwas going to ask you then?
Yeah, take a look. That'sthe box, but it's empty. So
it's empty. What am I supposedto do? Fill it with? Eastrang
Holiday? Take it easy, Jimmy. Maybe mister Holiday will tell us things
now, mister Holiday. Look,I sent you the letter to bit in

(13:37):
this box I checked. Never mindhow I found out who you were?
Well, then you should know.I didn't get the box of the auction
yesterday, I know, but you'vegot it last night from home. Look
that's the way I got it empty. What more do you want from me?
Information? Who had that box?Does it make any difference? You've

(13:58):
got it now? I want doesin it? That's the way I got
Jimmy, Yeah, did you seeanybody take the bucks yesterday? When that
man was hit by the car?Whoever did get away fast? Now?
But Holiday, you went to thematch my departments last night. When you
came out, you had the bucks. And that's as far as it comes.
And not quite did you get itfrom? Conrad looked hard at me

(14:22):
so he didn't know Ruth Cornwall.I could tell him and put her on
the spot, but I didn't wantto do that, not until I found
out a bit more. Conrad gotup from behind his desk. I don't
know what game you're playing, Holiday, but I can tell you this.
You won't play along, and I'mtelling you I got the box that way
empty. Well do you have todo then is to tell me who picked

(14:45):
up that bus at the exitingestity?Yes? And what if I don't?
Jimmy, Yeah, how hard ismister Holliday's head? Not very Go ahead?
Then wait a minute, hold it, Jimmy, Okay, Holiday,
what look? Do you want whatwas in that box? Right? Sure?

(15:09):
Then let me go after What areyou talking about? You didn't go
to the auction yourself to bid forthe box, which means that you didn't
want anybody to see you get it? All right? Whatever it was in
that box is important to you.But if you beat me up, you'll
never find out. You see,I'm the only one who knows who had
it. Oh we could go tothe march Muder and find out, sure,

(15:31):
sure, but you wouldn't find anybodybecause because there's nobody there. Now
he's smart, Uh yeah, smart. It was a bluff. It had
to be, but Conrad was afraidto call it. If he did,
he wouldn't get what he wanted,he thought. He stared at me and
then okay, Holiday, I Idon't know how you found out how important

(15:52):
this is, but evidently it did. All right? How much do you
won't? What makes you think Iwant anything? Are you kidding. Okay,
we'll decide that after I get whatyou want to bring the notebook and
we'll talk it over. That's adeal that bet you. You won't be
alone, Holliday, you live companyall the way. Oh how nice.

(16:15):
Jimmy has such a good phase. You know. It'll do me a lot
of good to be seen with him. Yeah, if you don't come through,
it could also do you a lotof harm. And now back to

(16:38):
hot buns. Another box thirteen atDuncher with Alan land as Damn Holiday.
Well, I could have bone upthe whole thing by telling Convat about Ruth
Cornwall, but I didn't want todrag her in unless she was going to
double across me. Okay, therehad to be a starting point, and

(17:00):
for me it was a hospital andthe little guy who had bought the box
was taken after his accident. Well, I'm afraid you can't talk with him,
mister Holiday. As a matter ofthank there was another man here yesterday
and he frightened our patients so badlythat he had a relapse. Doctor.
What's your patient's name, Ralph Sanders. He's an ex convictor just got out

(17:22):
of prison a few days ago.Okay, thanks doctor. Here's my name
and phone number. If I cantalk with him at any time, please
call me, will you? Sothat was at dead end. Then I
got the idea that the people ofthe auction rooms might be able to help
here. It is, mister Holiday. That box was part of lot number

(17:44):
five o nine. What does thatmean? Well, Lot five o nine
was in storage here for a time. We received the money to pay for
the storage, and then it stopped. How long ago? Oh, it
must have been over sixty days.We hold goods that long and then offered
them for sale. Hey for thestorage charges? How long did you have
this lot five on nine? Well, let me look at the books.

(18:11):
Four years. Do you know thename of the person who owned the goods?
James R. Connlin, At leastthat's the name on our books.
Did you make any attempt to locatethis Connel after the payments on storage stopped
coming in? Yes, we did, but we couldn't I see. Oh,
one more question. Did you advertisethe sale? Oh, yes,

(18:32):
we're bound to by long you're advertisein the papers. That's right, Thanks
very much. Well, there wasone place to find out about James R.
Connelin the Morgue of the Star Times, and what I found out began
to slip the merry go round enoughto let me see some of the things

(18:52):
a little more clearly learn up myapartment later in the day, Hello,
mister Halliday. Yes, who isthis? This is doctor Evans City Hospital.
Oh yes, Sanders is conscious now, all fine, but I'm afraid
that he won't live. And sinceyou were the only person who left his

(19:14):
name, I I thought you'd wantto know. May I see him?
You haven't much time. I'll beright there, doctor. I saw the
poor little guy. He was patheticallyanxious to talk. He had been Conlin's
cell mate in the penitentiary, andConlin had talked he had to talk to
someone, tell about something he wassaving up or when he got out,

(19:37):
and it was Sanders. He toldabout a teakwood box and what wasn't never
dreaming he had died in prison beforeSanders got out. Okay, now it
was my thing. I went outside. Hello, Jimmy, still playing tag

(19:59):
with me? Watch the idea holiday. I'm full of ideas, but the
best one of all is let's goto Conrad. Now you got that book?
Not with me? Pretty boy?You want to get your head,
singed. Look, we're going toConrad right now. You are about you
won't Now, let's get going. We stand here one more second. I'll
let that notebook loose where it'll dothe most good, are the most harm

(20:22):
and that big ears depends on thepoint of view who I I? Okay,
okay, but you're asking for trouble. Fine, let's go hunt for
it, shall we. Hello,Holliday, glad to see you back an
optimist Conrad here, I brought yourson back with me. Say allot of

(20:47):
Papa, Jimmy, that's just allabout it. I just got tired of
having Jimmy hart him. Jimmy asyou got it? Yeah, where's it?
Holiday? I know with you.Don't be silly, Jimmy. You'll
let him get it and do afade out on you. Oh no,
I didn't. Oh no, Jimmywas with me all the way and a
more gruesome companion no man could ask. Okay, A while ago, I

(21:10):
talked with a little guy named RalphSanders. Sanders so he was Conlin's cell
maid in prison going. It seemsmister Kunn had a notebook filled with a
lot of details that would blow you. And you're nice bunch right out of
the window. Where is it?As? If I tell you? I
listen, you found out about thebox because Sanders talked the prison grape vine

(21:36):
picked it up and it got toyou. He wrote me, wanted me
to bit on the box and getit for you. The jokes on you,
Conrad, because I didn't have thefaintest idea what was in that box
before today? How long do youthink you'll enjoy this big joke on me?
A long long time. I'm walkingout of here right now with no
tail on me, huh, Becauseif I don't show up where I'm supposed

(22:02):
to in exactly one hour, thatnotebook goes to the police. Listen,
you're smart, we can make atea. Oh no, remember I'm walking
out of here. Oh I forgot, I forgot. Good night, Jimmy.

(22:23):
Well his head's not very hard either, is it. Sure? I
walked out all right, But Iexpected to feel my back pick up a
few ounces of let on the way. I didn't. I was very happy
about them. Ah. There wasstill one more thing to clear up with
Cornwall. If she had that notebookand Conrad found out about it and I

(22:48):
was out in the cold, Igot to the March Spot apartments as fast
as I could, because it couldbe that she was going to do a
little business with Conrad herself. Igot in, went to her apartment.
Yes, sorry, I couldn't waitto be invited in. I told you

(23:10):
not to come back here. I'mback. What do you want? Last
night you gave me a box.Now I want what was in it?
There was nothing in it, noteven a notebook with some very startling things
in it about a certain mister Conradin his game. So you found out
about this, yeah, But infinding out, I put myself in a
wonderful spot to get acquainted with amortician. All right, so you know,

(23:32):
but what good will it do you? What good will it do you?
That's no concern of yours. Ohyes, it is. Put yourself
in my place. Conrad thinks I'vegot the notebook. He also knows who
I am and where I live.Now, when he finds out I don't
have the notebook and can't hold itover his head, he's going to get
awfully off the rough with me.And that seems to be your problem,

(23:55):
mister Holiday, And you won't giveme any help with it? Why should
I? Fair question? I'll answerit because I don't think you want to
see me get killed. Look,I can't help you. Do you understand
that I can't help you at all? Where's the book? It's no use.
I won't tell you. I won'ttell you anything anything. Why did
you put that on the end?Mister Holiday? The last time you were

(24:18):
here I was at a disadvantage. Now our positions are reversed. I think
you'll leave now without giving me anymore trouble. All right, you ask
what you'll get it? What doyou mean by that? I did a
lot of reading today, miss Conlin. Oh, don't call me that.

(24:41):
You don't know that. You can'tknow that. We can't know that.
It was a throw in the dark. But where I wanted to the clippings
on Conlin mentioned something about a daughter, not much, but enough to give
me a hint that Ruth Cornwall andRuth Conlin were the same. I watched
him for a few seconds, andthen all right, I'm Ruth Condon.

(25:06):
Are you satisfied? No? Notquite? What I said before still goes.
Do you want me to get killed? No? Of course not.
And what are you doing with thatnotebook? Well? If I tell you,
what do you do. That dependson what you tell me. All

(25:26):
right, I'll kill you. Myfather died in prison. No one knows
I'm his daughter, no one.For four years, I've lived under another
name, waiting for him to comehome, waiting to help him get even
with Conrad and the men who hassent him to prison. Sure he could
have told things at his trial. He knew he'd been double crossed, but
he wanted to wait. No,I I don't know. Why don't you

(25:52):
know I'm gonna get married? Ishere? I didn't count on falling in
love with five, falling in lovewith Tommy. Oh, he was the
man who came here last night afterif I left. Yes, I had
to get that notebook because if someoneelse got hold of it, all the
old scandal would be raked up again. People would find out who I was,

(26:14):
that my father died in prison.Tommy would find out. I said,
I waited a long time to geteven with Conrad, But now I
don't want to because of Tommy.Oh, don't just see. I can't
let anyone else have that notebook.I want a chance to live like anyone
else, like you were a millionother people. Yes, I I see,
So now what did you do.I I can't do a thing this

(26:38):
common. It's your problem, nowmine. That's right. You can destroy
that book and let Conrad go alonghis merry where you can forget your father.
He's dead. Whatever happens to Conradnow won't help him, that's true,
But leave us out of it.If you let a man like Conrad
go free, when you could puthim where he belonged, that wouldn't be

(27:00):
any good way. Please please stopit, and maybe something you've never thought
about it. Someday, someday yourTommy might find out you've got nothing to
be ashamed of. It wasn't you, It was your father. Why don't
you start with a clean page.If if there's Timmy's a right guy,

(27:25):
he'll understand. Well, Miss connHello, Tommy Darling, I want you

(27:51):
to come over right away. There'ssomething we've got to talk over, all
right, dear. I'll give himtender one on Tommy Ruth National Expo Day

(28:26):
of Notorious Racketeer after five years goodMan's note broth. Forget that, Susie.
Turn to the society page. Yeahnah, read that, mister and
missus Tommy Gibson leave for Behamus onHoneymoon Gee, the behamous. You must

(28:47):
feel just like stupid, mister Holiday. Lo word is cupid, Susie and
I'm dressed differently, mister Holiday.Good night Susie, same time. Through

All right, welcome back. Youknow, if this episode we're just
one late, one episode later inthe chronology, it would air with next

premiere of Johnny Manero. As forour two weeks of Johnny Madaro before we
get into Jeff Reagan, So besure to listen for that. Also,
