we have not actually been able tofind like an overall spot ansorship deal
for UH this quarter like we usedto be able to find on dragnet.
And that's for a variety of reasons. UH. So basically for the rest

(01:10):
of the quarter, I'm opening itup um for UH for people in the
audience who are interested to sponsor theprogram, either to do it commercial commercially
to help promote their business UM orthat there there were some people as well
on dragnet who who had offered todo it just non commercially. So if

(01:36):
you want to dedicate a show tosomeone, UM, there's information on that
on the website. Not going togo into a whole lot of detail,
I'll mention it briefly the rest ofthe week. But after that, just
mentioned it. Um Um mentioned itmuch more and frequently. Um. But
just go to uh sponsor dot GreatDetectives dot net for non commercial answorship and

(02:00):
advertising, Dot Great Detectors dot netif you want to promote your business.
While we got some comments on Facebooksometime into the last movie. We'll get
to the Facebook comments. We havea few podcast Alley comments we will get

(02:23):
It then with a database of twohundred online resources, including the Great
Detectives of Old Time Radio for oldtime radio fans and researchers. And it's
a pretty complete site. It's athere here it then dot com so here
I then dot com so yeah.It looks like a pretty good website.

(02:46):
Other comments, some regarding the movie. Dave had a couple uh. I
actually will start with Madeline, whowrites, if only I had an iPod
Touch or iPhone, I could watchthat. This is regarding Sherlock Holmes in
The Secret Weapon. This and CaptainBlood. Do you think that could be
the next movie in the feed. It's one of my favorite pirate movies.

(03:08):
Despite deviations from the books, whichI also love. Um, thanks a
lot, Madeline. In answer tothe question regarding regarding doing Captain Blood,
I want to keep the movies kindof in the detective mystery mold. In

(03:30):
the case of Captain Blood while wecan play the Luck's radio show. The
movie is still under coffee right tellabout twenty thirty, so now that one
wouldn't be eligible will be played.Dave mentions about the h He mentions an

(03:50):
a potential concern with the app wherehe said some of the episodes sound to
him like they're cutting off a coupleof minutes early. If that it happens
to you, plays email me Boxthirteen at Great Detectives dot Net. I'll
get with our with the people fromWizard Medium. We'll find out what might
be causing that if that's a problem. But he also goes says, please

(04:12):
keep the movies coming. Also, when you get around to post any of
the Boston Blackie movie thanks again,Um, well, Dave, but we
would love to be able to postthe box Boston Blackie movies. Really.
Uh, it's one I've actually lookedforward to seeing, but unfortunately it's the
it's the copyright of laws. Again. The movies aren't available in the public

(04:35):
domain. So and it's disappointing toowith Boston Blackie because the sets are also
not there's no authorized commercial sets outthere that people can buy and enjoy.
So yeah, that's happened with waytoo many of those old movies. All
right, Well, let's get intotoday's episode of Box thirteen. This one's

(04:58):
the Haunted Artist. We will listenand we'll come back Box thirteen with the
Star of Paramount Pictures Alan Ladd asDan Holiday Box thirteen care of Star Times.

(05:25):
I don't know whether going after aghost is your idea of an adventure,
but I think I may have onefor you. I don't believe in
ghosts either, at least I don'tthink I do. However, if you're
interested, my name is Michael Davis. I'm an artist. My studio is
at one eighth three Lincoln News.I'm there almost all day. Is at

(05:48):
one eighth three Lincoln News. I'mthere almost all day and any day.
So if you'll drop around, thismay be interesting. Michael Davis. So,
Miss Michael Davis didn't believe in ghosts. Well on, neither did I
until I met mister Davis. Nowback to Box thirteen and Dan Holiday's newest

(06:15):
adventure, The Hearted Artist. Gogee, mister Holiday artist, such thing
ever see a bank account after Marchthe fifteen, Skip it, Susie.
Michael Davis, he said, he'san artist. Do you do anything about
arts, SUSSI, Well, I'vebeen to the museum where they had that

(06:38):
statue of the Venus b Demeal. That's Venus Demil, the one with that
arm. Oh. Well, artis long and time is feeding, and
the same goes for Dan Holiday. And it looks like a tip to mister
Michael Davis is an order. Seeyou later, Sussy. Half hour later,
Michael Davis and I were introducing ourselvesand shaking hands. I liked him

(07:01):
and he looked like an artist. He checked when he grinned. Then he
looked and seemed a lot younger thanhis old thirty three or four, and
he grinned as he said. Sohe advertised for adventure, just to get
plots for your stories, as it'sa general I did, maybe I'll be
able to use yours. Well, this sounds insane, but I think the

(07:23):
studio is haunted or I am whyyou hear the pattern of cold little feet
in the clank of chains at nightI wish I did instead of gold common.
Look you see that easel in thecorner. There's a painting on it.
I've got it covered now, butbut what well, look, take

(07:45):
a good long look. I did. What I saw was one of those
surrealist things. It was a desertwith queer figures raising their arms to a
brassy sky and a vicious looking sun. Somehow it gave me the shivers.
I was star hanging at it whenwell, Holiday, what do you think
of it? What am I supposedto think of it? Meaning you don't

(08:05):
like it? I don't know.I hadn't intended you to criticize it.
Just look at it and see ifyou notice anything wrong. Go ahead,
I'll keep quiet. I looked again, and something didn't strike me as being
a little alide. I moved infor a closer look. Stood there for
a moment. Huh huh, you'vegot it, Holiday, that stone quarry

(08:26):
painted in the right hand portion ofthe canvas. Yes, it doesn't belong.
I mean, I mean it's outof place. I didn't paint it.
Maybe we'd better go over the signalsagain, Davis, I lost the
ball on that play. I don'tblame you, But it's the truth.
I did not paint that quarry inthere. Look at it. The technique
is different. Yes, the brushworks not like the rest exactly. And

(08:50):
that painting has to be done inthree days. I've been working at it
for seven months and it has tobe finished. Well, what's the rush.
Oh, I've been invited to hanga canvas in the Burnier galleries.
Oh, means you've arrived. Berner'sbeing taught with the big leagues is to
baseball exactly. You see holiday.I started the painting seven months ago.
Everything was fine for what Davis toldme was this. He finished work in

(09:20):
the eve, didn't cover the paintingand turn in. Then in the morning,
when he took the cover off thecanvas, the cory would be painted
in. It happened six times. The last time was the night before he
wrote his Start at the Box thirteen. He was sure no one had entered
his studio during the night. Helocked his windows and doors, but still
it happened. It's driving me crazy. I've lain awake at night trying to

(09:41):
catch the person responsible, but nothingdoing. He never shows up when I'm
waiting for him. Have you toldthe police? Oh? Sure, they
thought I was just two steps aheadof the man in the white coat.
You're sure you've locked up every night? Look at the door, new locks,
two of them. Even the windowfastens a brain. Those are the
only instances and exits. No holiday, No one comes in through the doors

(10:05):
of windows. I'll swear to it. But someone has to, Davis,
unless unless I am leaving the rails. No, I don't think so,
thanks, given my best friends won'ttell me that. Well, Michael Darlings,
I've brought dinner. Oh, comeon em, Betty here take some
of these tactics. Betty, thisis Dan Holiday. Dan. This is

(10:28):
my fiance Betty Harper. Hello,Dan, and my name is Betty.
Well, thanks, I'll use it. Mike Darling, I'm invited, kidnay
and for dinner? Is that allright? Sure? Will you stay then?
I'm afraid I can't. Besides I'munexpected. Oh no, we've got
plenty spaghetti, salad, wine.Be careful of that barbl Mike here,
let me have it to pay worth. Please, I'm not a child.

(10:50):
That's a matter of opinion. Youwill stay, won't you? Then?
Well? I oh, please dowe can talk some more about my problem
problem, your problem Mike. Oh, yes, Dan's gonna help about the
painting, and I'm a child.Huh, there goes the wine. It
was clumsy, wasn't it. Accidentswill happen, Betty, if I can

(11:11):
put in that proline. Oh,Mike, I just remembered. We're to
go to the Sutton's after dinner.H Oh, that wasn't a prompt.
Don't refuse him again. But Dan'sgonna As a matter of fact, I
can't stay anyway. I have anengagement too. Well, all right,
but he will return tomorrow, won'tyou shure? I'll be glad to good
night? Well? Well, Ilike this. It looked good, especially

(11:39):
when Mike's own girlfriend was anxious todeal me out that Betty didn't want me
on the team. It's easy tosee as the brass button in a collection
plate. She didn't drop that bottleof wine. It jumped out of her
hands when Mike said I was goingto help. Why I have to find
that out. I got to myapartment after dinner and sat down to think
about it. When hello is thisd holiday? Yes? It is?

(12:03):
Who's this? Well? Never mindjust a moment, Hello, Hello Holiday?
You're to keep away from Michael Davis, forget the whole thing. Understand
well, frankly, no am Isupposed to? Well, yes, sir,
I mean look look here, holiday, it'll be awkward for you if
you continue go on. I'm interested, all right. I just remember what

(12:24):
I said, keep away from MichaelDavis or you will be sorry. I'll
listen. This is no joke, but I am laughing. I warned you
good night, brother, whoever youwere. That was the worst imitation of
a squeeze play I ever heard. Are you kidding? Dan? No?

(12:46):
Someone called me last night I wantme to keep away from you. Oh,
I must have been a joke.Does anyone want to keep this painting
out of the Bernard galleryes? Forsome reason? I thought of that.
You mean sabotage soda? Yeah, that's it? Well, who no one?
I know? You're sure, Mike, of course, we don't even
work on the canvas today. Here'sI scraped off the stone quarry and started

(13:09):
my own work again. Ah.Then I've got an idea. What time
is it er four o'clock? Whygot any ceiling wax? Ceiling wax?
No? I haven't. Can youget some? Yes, there's a store
a block down the street. Butwhat do you want with the ceiling wax.
Well, for one thing, we'regoing to prove there's no ghost or
or one, or that there isone run Down'll get the wax, all

(13:33):
right, If you're the boys makestuff at home, I'll be back.
I worked fast to get the thingdone before Mike came back. I took
every tube of paint, every brush, every pallet I could see and wipe
them clean. Then I put themback where they had been just in time.
Mike came back, handing me theceiling wax. Oh there's be enough
then, Oh, yes, Ithink sum okay, I will lock all

(13:54):
the windows and be sure to lock. What are you up to? You
see? We can find out ifsome one gets in here while they're asleep,
the seal of locks and bolts withthis wax. And yes, but
wax can be broken, it iswho know, someone came in the windows
of the door. Yeah, butthe person could reseal the locks. Sealing
wax melts easily enough. Sure, but he couldn't put the imprint of my
signet ring back in the wax withoutgetting the ring from me first. And

(14:18):
I'm very fond of this ring.Never take it off my finger okay,
Mike, let's go to work onthe windows. All right? That doesn't
both windows sealed? If our ghostgets in, now you'll have to break
the wax. You know there's onlyone thing wrong. What I won't be

(14:39):
able to sleep tonight. Oh,I'll take something. You've got to sleep
because your busitsor won't break in unlessyou do. Dan. Suppose those seals
aren't broken in the morning, butthe painting has been changed anyway? What
then we both apply for an outsidecell. Now, don't do any more
on your painting, and don't toucha thing. Why not you want me
to? I hope you don't.You certainly and asked no questions, and

(15:01):
do as I say, and tomorrowmorning we may have an answer. It
was eleven o'clock that night before Ileft Mike's studio. He had taken a
setative and was sleeping like a baby. I turned off the lights, checked
the seals in the windows. Allokay, I left myself out, tried

(15:26):
the door locked but good. ThenI took the ceiling wax and old the
hung of it to go over thekeyholes, and I pressed my signet ring
against the wax. I even forcedwax into the crack above the door initial
that Michael Davis was sealed in andwhoever or whatever was doing the dirty work
was sealed out. I hoped. When I got home, I set my

(15:50):
alarm for fire the next morning.Yeah, it went off all right.
I stumbled out of my bed intomy clothes. Wasn't drove to David's the
studio. I wanted to get therebefore he woke up. I did because
when I listened at his door,that wasn't a sound. I looked carefully
at the seals I put there thenight before. Well, they were intact,

(16:12):
I'll swear to it. But Irang his buzzard. He was quite
asleeper. He had taken something. And you come back in a week,
it's Dan michae let me in.Oh, oh sure do you always get

(16:32):
up this early? I have acontract with the part commissioners to wake up
the birds. Fine, shouldn't happento a vulture? Sleep? All right?
Oh? Like a top to startit all? Nope? Okay,
let's stock at the seals you beenwell, this one's all right, m

(16:55):
so's this one and the seals onyour door were intact too, Nah,
take the cover off the painting,Mike what if it's been changed again.
If it has, I'll buy youa new hat. Hi, Hi,
I wear a size seven and threeeighth and make it a great one.

(17:23):
A couple of Christmases ago, Igot the gift of a Roku, which
allowed me to watch movies from myNetflix account right on my television. It
was great, but over time,Christmas gadgets tend to become less spectacular as
new technology emerges, and I thoughtthat would be the case with the Roku.
I'm happy to report the Roku isa better value than when I first
got it. My Roku is notonly attached to my Netflix account, but

(17:47):
I've also used it to watch moviesI've bought off of Amazon, and enjoy
video and audio podcasts. With theirmedia fly channel, I can connect with
your Facebook photos as well as toyour accounts with such sites as MLB dot
com, Flicker, Pandora dot com. The Roku brings the best of the
web to your TV and is availablestarting around eighty dollars. For more information,

our website. Now back to theHaunted Artist. Another Box thirteen adventure with
Alan ladd as Dan Holliday. Well, the painting was changed. Davids sworry
hadn't done it, and I believedhim. But if he hadn't, okay,

(18:30):
there had to be an answer.I took all the tubes of paint,
brushes and palace with me when Ileft Davis also the painting itself.
I wouldn't tell him why. LieutenantCling a police headquarters was more curious,
what are you doing taking a homecourse and detective work? Yes, I'm
on my fourth lesson. It's entitledhow to be a nosy Cup? What's

(18:51):
the gag? Holiday? Look, there's no gag. I just thought the
guy who was biting his nails sobadly he was working on his elbow a
few minutes ago. Cling run fingerprinttests on those tubes and brushes and pallets,
then compare them with a prince onthis class. But whose glass is
it? Longs to an art aspend of mine. I swiped him when
he wasn't looking. Let me.They got in that big package a body.
Who's all right, it's a paintingand you don't know anything about art?

(19:17):
Anyone artists model was? She wasn'tas bad as she was painted,
Okay, so I don't slay allright, I'll laugh at your joke.
Ha ha. Now what you're doingin that favor? Okay? Okay,
think a print test and the tubes, brushes and pallets compared with prints in

(19:37):
the glass. Right, I'll sinkthat I have him for anybody else and
a half an hour for you.Three hours okay, great, we're back
in. Three hours. After leavingClang, I went to the Star Times
learn the name of an artics. But an hour later I showed him Mike's
painting. M that is quite good. Now it's a friend of mine's.

(20:03):
Good brush work, excellent composition, wonderful color, and with this this has
no place in the picture. Look, I've got a lot of things to
do. What I want you todo is look at the painting and tell
me whatever you can about it.I'll pay you, of course anyway,
but it will take maybe two hoursto do a good job, you understand,

(20:23):
Yeah, sure, sure, sure, I'll be back in two hours.
I wasn't marriage around from clinging tothe art expert, from him back
to Claing a little less than threehours. Then haven't you finished? Sure?
There's your stuff, and here's thereport. The matter with you cling.

(20:45):
There's no mistake about this report ismistake. Look, Dan, our
boy knows his business better anything youlike. Weren't Weren't there any other prince
at all? None? The princein the paint toobs and the rest of
that stuff for the same as onthe glass, all of miss same person.
But it can't pay. I've gotnews for her. It is the

(21:10):
only person who could have touched thosetubes and brushes was Davis himself. Yeah.
Why should he sabotage his own paintingwhen that meant so much to him?
And yet he was asleep when ithappened? Or was he? I
stopped thinking about it. Then Ihad to get back to the art expert
and find out something. It wasa day of surprise because when I saw

(21:33):
him, fine thing? Did theypushed me and they took your painting?
Oh? I love standing here lookingwhen they come in, I have no
time to see who they are andwho they pushed me? There they got
the cameras in their garden. Didyou call a police? Yeah? Yeah,
the police come, but I cantell them nothing. I have a
mind of mind. Were they men? The mother took a painting? One
one man, one woman? You'resure there was a woman, young man.

(21:53):
I'm an art expert, but Ialso know other things. I know
a woman when I see one, even for a second. All right,
never mind them. Now, whatdid you find out about the painting?
Not much. I had not muchtime, But I can tell you this.
I think that the right side ofthe picture was painted by somebody other
than the one who painted the wrist. You mean that stone quarry wasn't painted

(22:15):
by the same artist to did therest of the picture? I do not
think. So. There's a differenttechnique, one that is familiar, and
I think I recognize it. Youdo. Oh, what's his name?
The one who painted the quarry? It's a peculiar technique. Some years ago
I handled some paintings by this man. All right, all right, who
is he? Luigi Antonetti? Wherecan I get in touch with him?

(22:37):
Well? What I want to say? Where can I reach him? Oh?
You're a crazy young man. LuigiAntonetti's dead. Oh that was great.
One more twist like that. Ineed a quark scooter to take off
my hat. There was one personwho could answer a few questions for me,
Betty Harper. I addressed from Davisand told him to hold base until

(23:02):
he heard from me. I guessBetty didn't expect me, mister Holiday.
I I was just getting ready togo out, correct, and you just
came in. Where's that painting?Painting? What are you talking about?
Oh? Hello, hello kid? This is Dan Holiday. Kid says mister
Holiday. How are you Holiday?Oh? That voice, the voice of

(23:22):
doom over the phone? Well, really, I kit that was a bad
job. Well where's that painting now? Mister Holiday? You know you've let
yourself in for a vacation on thetaxpayers money with that trick. Now,
really it was a joke, wasn'tit, Betty. Mister Halliday kids really
thought he was helping out in apractical show. Well it wasn't. I
look, will you go now?A holiday? Oh? All right?

(23:45):
But I must say it all turnedout very stupidly. Okay, Betty,
So you've got the painting? Yes? Now, will you please let me
alone? Will you let Micha alone? Not before I find out what's going
on? What if I told herhis career would be ruined, his life
ruined? Two? Would you stillgo on? Maybe I don't believe that,

(24:06):
but you've got to. I loveMike and I'm trying to help him,
help him. Look, if Mikedousin't finish that painting and won't hang
in the burners galleries, what becomesof his career? Then you're robbing him
his chance, not helping him.I'd rather do that than what I said.
Enough. Oh please, please,You've got to believe me, Dan.
All I want is from Mike tobe happy. And all I want

(24:30):
to know is what's going on?And what does Luigi Antonetti have to do
with all this? How did youfind that out? That doesn't matter?
Is Luigi Antonetti's still alive? She'sdead? And how can you think that
Corey on Mike's canvas? Get outof here. You'll get out all right,
all right, but I'll find outif you're doing When any harm comes
to Michael, why, I'll killyou now, get out. That was

(24:57):
all from Betty. I would havebet my last penny she was doing what
she was doing for Mike. Butwhy? Why? Then I got an
idea find out about Luigi Antonetti.I looked him up, found out he'd
lived in a small town about twohundred and fifty miles away. He'd painted

(25:18):
there. Okay, so I droveto the little town. Sure, I
found out he was dead. OnlyI was even shown his grave, and
when I looked at it high Iwanted to reach back and chip the icicles
off my spine. How could adead man paint? There was only one

(25:40):
answer. He couldn't. Then Ilearned something else. Antonetti had a pupil,
a pupil named Michael Davis. Morequestions, and finally I found an
old school teacher who remembered I could, of course, wonderful boy, and
Luigi Antonetti taught him painting. Hesaid Michael had a brilliant career ahead of

(26:00):
him. I see, Well, mister Evans, do you know what became
Michael. I think he went tothe city, although I haven't heard when
did he go. I believe shortlyafter he graduated from high school. That
must be sixteen years ago. Yes, it was right after his best friend
was killed. What. Yes,poor boy fell into the old quarry quarry
stone quarry. Yes, it wasone night after senior party. And I

(26:22):
think yes, both lads Michael andArthur were in love with the same girls.
He would her name be Betty Hopper. No, it's amazing you should
know that. Yes, how aboutthis Arthur, Well, it was quite
dark Arthur, I believe went backto get something. The bridge across the
quarry must have broken. Michael wasupset for days, even though Arthur was
his rival for Betty. Thank you, Thank you very much, mister Evans.

(26:45):
You'll excuse me, but I've gotto hurry. But I had to
put more pieces together, so Iwent back to the city and back to
the art expert. Yeah. Yeah, it's not only past, mister Holliday.
It's quite probable in his early yearshe would use his teacher's technique.

(27:07):
Next stop a psychiatrist. Certainly, mister Holliday, That's quite possible. There
are numerous case history is similar toit. In general, farm things began
to fit together a different technique thatof a dead man, yet only Davis's
fingerprints on the tubes and brushes. That is concern and no willingness to see

(27:27):
his career stop rather than have mefind out the reasons for everything that happened.
That I had to bring the wholething out in the open. So
later in Mike's studio. Let meget this straight, Dan, you say
I'm doing that myself, ruining myown painting, Yes, you are.
I don't listen to Michael gees old, what's the matter with all of you?
Like you got to listen to me, and he's got to listen to
me. And doctor Rawlings, whydid you bring a doctor? I'm not

(27:48):
only a doctor, mister Davis,I'm a psychiatrist. Sick. Are you
trying to tell me I'm crazy? No? No, of course you're not,
but you will be if you don'tlet us help. Now, listen,
you want your care, don't youcertainly all right? You won't have
it if you don't let us help. If, oh, Mike, send
them away, please, Mike,Mike, do you remember a person named
Arthur Denny Denny Denning. No,I don't know him alone, Betty,

(28:12):
believe me, this is better forhim. Ask doctor Rawlings, tell him
doctor. I'm sure mister Davis hasa guilt complict. Unless we find out
why, he'll never finish this painting. But I have never finished any other?
Why not? What would stop me? Your own mind, mister Davis?
Like you know as well as Ithat no one came into your studio
the night we seal it up.No one. You were the only person

(28:33):
in here. Now do you see? Not quite? What do you want
me to do? After Rawlings toldMike what had to be done. Davis
agreed. It took only a fewseconds for Rawlings to inject a drug into
Davis's arm. Then we waited, waited until him all right, he's under
You asked a question, mister Holliday, Mike, Mike, can you hear

(28:59):
me? Yes? Now, listen, Mike. It's sixteen years ago.
You're in high school, a senioras a senior party. It's night,
remember, yes, yeah, it'sdark. It was with you, Mike,
Betty, Betty and Earth there. What what happened that night? Mike?

(29:27):
I killed Earth? Be quiet? How did you kill him? Mike?
H he had to go back forsomething. I told him take the
shortcut over the quarry. Then thenwhat happened? I forgot? I forgot,

(29:48):
you forgot what the bridge? Thebridge was broken. It was dangerous,
but I forgot. I wouldn't havesent him as I know. He
was killed, wasn't he? Yes? I loved Betty, so did he.
Everyone would have said I killed him, but I didn't. I didn't.

(30:08):
I just forgot about the bridge.I didn't mean oh that's all I
thought. He did it. Theliberal, you see, Miss Harper is
conscious mind refused to admit his guilt. So he forgot completely. His conscious
mind forgot to protect him from theterrible feeling of guilt. But ultimately it
