(01:37):
Tanks. If that there ended, yours is on the level. If you'll
go any place, do anything,I'll be waiting for you three tomorrow afternoon
in the park. I'll be sittingon one of the defenses in the lake.
I'll be sitting on one of thebenches near the lake. And you'll
know me because I got Red ahead. That was the letter written on
(02:01):
the back of an old handbill.Poor Red. I wonder if he would
have written a letter having on whatwas going to happen. You know,
I think maybe he would have. And now back to box thirteen and Dan
(02:25):
Holliday's newest adventure, The Philanthropist. It's your duty an awful of finger marks.
Ah, Susie, don't be asnub. I'm not mister Holiday.
But it's very evident that this personisn't too particular. Why, Susie,
you went through a whole sentence withoutshifting gears. Oh, I can be
(02:47):
careful of my renunciation if I wantto be. Oh, Susie, I
had to spoil it. Never mind, it's a fine day, so I'll
be in the park by three o'clockto see what Red has on his mind.
It was just three when I turnedinto the park. The benches by
the lake were pretty well filled, and I looked around for one that was
(03:07):
being held on by a person's redhair, and I saw him. Susie
must have been psychic, only shewouldn't have pronounced it that way. Red
was dressed in a suit that musthave had a tentative date with the pressing
iron, maybe ten years before, and didn't keep it. If he had
ever shaved, the shock had beentoo great for his face, and he
had stopped. His red hair bouncedout of his head like wires, and
(03:30):
he was eating peanuts. Good afternoon, Red, Oh, how you chump?
Mind? If I said I'm fair? Democrats block Jim? You wrote
to box thirteen? Didn't? Ye? Oh? Yeah? Yeah? He
gave me the one over, butgood. He seemed to be satisfying himself
that he'd want to talk to me. He must have checked, okay,
because at that end of yours wasit on the level? On the level?
(03:53):
Red? How'd you know my name? Hunch? I have an intuitive
sense for names. Yeah, sure, okay? At peanut? Oh thanks,
I gotta pick him up fast beforethe pigeon snag him nothing. Hey,
yeah, how comes a guy likeyou? Sticks that head in the
paper adventure? I used the plotsfor my affection if they're any good?
(04:15):
Oh you're right? Huh? Wellthat's my bread and butter. Tough racket
sometimes, yeah, I guess whatyou make a lot of dough? It
all depends. How about you andwe tired? Oh what's on your mind?
Red? What's your name? Dan? Dan? Holiday? Okay Dan?
A peanut? No thanks, okayDan. I want to know where
(04:42):
my parentage? Your pal is hemissing? Yeah? We left Shi together.
Then the yard bolls caught a fastclip on us and we were split.
In other words, you were separatedby railroad detectives. Yeah, the
best way to keep and be ajug upon a bad charge. Well,
anyway, we're supposed to meet himin town and he didn't show up.
Yeah, I got in late. How to stop off at Indianapolis? So
(05:04):
I go to the place where Sukitold me to Zuki? Yes, is
that his name? I guess Iain't never had him say no other one?
All right? And then, wellwe was going to meet here at
the whole rescue mission. Yeah,I know where it is, I think
so, at least I know theneighborhood. Yeah. Well I wait to
one to three, well five days, but no Suki. I get worried.
(05:26):
I ask around, but nobody's seenSuki. Maybe changed his plans Red
without consulting me. Mister Suki wouldn'tleave without me. Were piles buddies we've
been hitting roads for five years together. Something's happened to Suki. Well,
what do you want me to do? Well? I thought maybe you could
help me. Look from well, look Red the police for you, kidden,
(05:48):
But if he's missing, they canlook at him for you. One
bag missing ain't nothing, mister.Something bad's happened to Suki. Audience because
one of the bows in the junglesaid, Suki was talking about a job.
That's funny, mister look Red.Maybe Suki did get the job,
And why don't I hurte fun him? Maybe you will sooner or later.
(06:09):
You ain't gonna help me, then, But what can I possibly do?
Red? In the city this size? Yeah, yeah, I get it
in the city this size. Nobodycares knowing about a guy like Suki,
except maybe a guy like me.He pulled me out from under a freight
once, almost got it himself bydoing it. I like Suki. We're
buddies. Red stead out over thelake, and somehow a little lump came
(06:31):
into my throat. Certainly, Redwas no pillar of society, but he
was a man, a human being, and Suki was his friend. For
a minute, neither of us saidanything. Then Okay, mister, but
get the whole thing. Sorry,I got you out of bed. Oh
I'm gonna redd it come back andsaw it out? What for? I
want to help him? Why?I guess I like Suki too, but
(06:56):
you ain't never seen him. Idon't have to. He saved your life
risk his own. Now what doyou want me to do? Now?
You're a top of day and agood guy. Sophie liked it too,
well, Now what's your idea?Well, redhead of the idea that we
(07:16):
could find out why became a Suphieby going to the mission. But as
Red put it, I'd have todress differently. So that night I wore
my oldest suit. I helped italong a little by dipping it in water
and letting it dry. Oh yes, and I forgot to shave. I
had something to eat, then wentto meet Red at the Whope Mission.
It was typical of the missions thatdo a great job helping well men who
(07:39):
needed it. Was clean neat. When I got there, the men were
just sitting down to supper at along wooden table. I was looking over
the room. When how are youtoday? Oh? Fine, thanks,
you're just in time for supper.Sit down, won't you. Well,
you see don now this is yourfirst time here, isn't it? Well,
(07:59):
yes it is. That's perfectly allright. You needn't feel embarrassed or
a shame. Now you come andsit down to a nice hot meal.
Well that's very nice. My nameis Work, missus Work. I superintend
the mission here. My name's damnvery well, dance now just come with
me. I followed her to thetable. She made me sit down and
then put a bowl of silks infront of me. I wasn't hungry.
(08:22):
Here you are da Now just yougo to it and you feel better in
a jiffy, A gentleman when thisis dan damn, these are my boy?
What'd you say? Jump on theman in? Oh? I eat
the super thing? Well, Idon't you You want to hurt the feelings?
(08:46):
Well, of course not. ButI didn't eat the souper bub Look
I don't see how I can eatit when I just got Look. Look,
look you gotta eat the super bob, and I'll show you how Like
this, it's easy. See noweat it? Okay, Okay, you
stop, I'll find the right key. Stare good, damon, slow little
here? Huh yeah? Would youpull in from shot good John Ospo,
(09:11):
you ain't eating the soup? Bubit's hot? Low on it? Okay?
Okay? Uh she read this evening? Red? Yeah? Red?
Oh Red? Yeah he was here. Was you mean he left? Yeah?
He picked up a letter that washere from a letter. He picked
up a letter. What are youa spire or something? I'm a friend
(09:33):
of Red's. Oh, well,he was here, Like I said,
he had a letter and leave it? Did you d you see who the
letter was from? What am Idepot? Semester? Shut up and eat
your soup? Okay, okay, but it's still hot. Well, I
ate the soup and I stayed inthe mission until ten o'clock. Red didn't
show up, and that worried mebecause I knew that for all his toughness,
(09:56):
he was anxious and worried about Sukie. Then when I decide of not
to wait any longer, we're goingto have our song. Now you'll find
the song sheets on the chair.Well, i'll see you. Let Where
are you going? Hey? Igotta day little keep what missus work said.
We're going to sing, but I'vegot to leave. You're gonna sing.
You ate the soup and you're gonnasing what's the matter. You don't
appreciate this hunt. Of course Ithink it's a wonderful thing. But well,
(10:18):
then sing. Here's a song we'regoing to sing number four. Everyone
has a sheet when you sing loud, destining at times, that's good enough,
and keep on key. I don'tlike swan notes. I'll try to
be operatic about the whole thing. But hold a sheet does so we can
get a melodeon. We'll have todo the best we can. All right,
(10:39):
here's the first note one, twothree R sing buck sing, Well
(11:03):
I'm saying. Then I left.I wondered about Red, and wondered about
that letter wasn't from Susan, Andit wasn't until the next day that I
got the joke. I was inthe office when Susie brought me the morning's
paper, Morning paper to holiday andthe nail from back thirteen. Oh thanks
Susie. Let's doing the world notmuch? And only three letters from back
(11:24):
thirteen. One from a lady whowants to know if you take baby fit.
Oh, that's too much of anadventure. Then there's one from a
man who wants you leave your brainto science. Oh great, there's great.
Hey. Then here's one from awoman who wants you. Hey,
what's the man amouster holiday the side? I'm in the paper here accident,
rail yards vagrant killed description, Yeah, Red, Susie, I got to
(11:52):
leave for a while. I'll seeyou later. So the bag gets killed.
We get it doesn't like that theyear but look, Cling, I
told you about Suki Suki smooky isPalios was hitting the rod and get killed.
I know, I know it happensa dozen times a year. Shure.
(12:16):
Now look, so Red got aletter from Suki Sukie told him where
he was their pals. Red takesoff to find him, gets tangled with
you're forgetting one thing, Cling, and that's Red had a lump on his
head. So I think he wasslugged. Alright, he was slugged.
Got a fight in the odds. Then you're looking at box thirteen imagination whip
(12:37):
you around on the merry go Around. This is just one of those things.
Now I've got to go to work. Suppose I turn up something cling,
something that proves Red was killed bysomebody who wanted that letter, then
I'll be glad to fill out yourdance card. Until then, rumba by
yourself. Okay, But I've gota hunch the red was killed because Suki
told him where he was. AndI'm going to find out where and why.
(13:11):
And now back to the philanthropist.Another Box thirteen adventure with Alan Ladd
as Dan Hollidad. Sure I wasgoing to find out where and why.
Sounded a lot easier than it turnedout, But I still believe the places
started looking was a rescue mission.I honored it, went back night after
(13:31):
night, day after day, untilfinally my face was familiar there as a
service on the floor. Then oneevening, how are you fine, miss
work? How are you blendid?Do you like it here? Dan?
Yes, I do. I've beenwatching you somehow. You don't seem like
the other Why not? I'm nodifferent from them? No, not in
(13:52):
so many words. But we willa slinter, Dan. Wouldn't you like
to help yourself? How do youmean that we'll get a job rehabilitate yourself?
Do you think I needed all ofus do more or less? Now,
there's a gentleman who's done so verymuch for the mission here, contributions,
furniture, lots of things. Man, he's done quite a bit for
(14:16):
other missions too. I understand.I want to send you to him,
Dan, Why what can you dofor me? I send other men to
him, the ones I think areworth the effort, And you think I
am is? That is? Yes? And what will you do for me?
He likes you. He may giveyou a job if you want one.
You say, it gives jobs toother men from other missions too,
(14:37):
Yes, I believe. So okay, missus Work, I'll get my whurl.
Fine, Dan splendid. I'll giveyou his name and address and you
go see him the first thing inthe morning. Maybe this was a lead
I've been waiting for. Radit spokenabout SUTHI going to get a job,
(14:58):
all right. Looked at the nameon us to the missus Work gave me.
It was Philip Gee ran The nextmorning, family sitting across from in
his office. Hell, well,so, missus Work says you did she
yes, mm hmmm, fine womansplendid, magnifficent work she's doing down there.
Yes, it is in my ownlittle way. I try to help
(15:18):
as much as I can. Yes, that's what she said. Mmmmmm how
old are you dam thirty two?I see somehow you don't seem like the
usual type. She sends to me, What is the usual type, mister
Rockla, Oh, it's no matter. But do you really want a job?
Damn yes, sir, I doM for the wife and kiddies.
(15:39):
Eh no, I'm I'm not married. Oh too bad. And then it's
because you want to show your relativesthat you can make a comeback. I
have no relatives. M That's whatI wanted to hear. Who hell do
you see? I never give jobsto men who have relatives. I feel
as though I should be helping thosewho are out all alone in the world.
(16:00):
I want to reach out and makemen feel well that there is someone
who cares. Do you see that? Damn yes I do. It's very
generous of you, mister rock Oh, nothing at all, my old little
contribution toward making this a better world. Well, can I think we have
just the job for you, butyou have to leave town? Leave town?
Do you mean the job's in adifferent city, Quill, Yes it
(16:22):
is, but don't you worry.I pay your transportation and not first class.
But you get there, and itjust so happens that you will be
the last one to take this kindof job. It's all I have.
I didn't like the way he saidI'd be the last this is a racket?
(16:45):
What kind wasn't? What was Rocklandangling? There was no one way
to find out, so I wentto the city sent me to It was
far enough away from Rockland to besafe, and close enough to the Rockland
to keep his eye on it.It was the next staff to known that.
I walk to the address Rocklan havegiven me. Knocked on the door.
(17:06):
Yeah, mister Rockland sent me.Okay, come on in, let
me see the letter. Yeah, here it is, m Okay, follow
me, Bud. I followed himdown the hallway and I took a good
look at the place. While Iwas doing it, I noticed something.
(17:29):
It was one of those old brownstonehouses and every window was barred. The
bars weren't new, They've been putthere by the original owner. Why should
Rocklan take a place like this? Then sit down a minute? Oh your
name's Dan? Huh? Yeah, yeah that's right. Dan. Had anything
to eat? No? Okay?Suppers and ten minutes, gwinn and wash
(17:51):
up where straight ahead until your rightthere's a big wash room. Then gwinn
the room right across when you're finishing. Sure. Thanks. There about seven
of them in the room, talking, washing their hands smoking. One of
them looked up when I entered. He seemed to be expecting someone else.
Then when he saw me, hewent back and washing his hands. I
(18:15):
moved in next to him. Hi, fella, Hi, just come on,
yeah, hey, what is thisjoint? Stop the testing the world?
Guy? Let your name damn yours? Call me Sukie, Sukie.
Yeah, why you're you're call ofRed's great? Hey? Where is he?
(18:38):
Why didn't you come up and waitingfor him? Rich got to get
in on this thing. Read waskilled? Sukie? What are you giving
me? I told Sukie about Red, but I didn't mention what I was
doing in the game. When Ifinished Red killed, he was coming to
meet me here. I sent hima letter telling him all you send him
a letter from here. Yeah.We ain't supposed to do no right and
(19:02):
tell anybody about this, But Red'smy petel. I wrote the letter and
snuck it out. But Sukie,I think Red was killed because you're send
him that letter. Huh what areyou yapping? I'm what do you?
What do you hid? You guys? Suffers on, come on, I'll
talk to your letters. Yeah, after supper, and we're sleeping room Dan,
(19:26):
Dan, you're sleeping No, that'syour Suki yeah, I might no
matchine, What would you telling mein the washroom? Listen, Suki,
First tell me what kind of aplace this is? What do you do
here? Much a soft touch? How we do a sort of old magazines
and we make it kind of well. We write down what's in each magazine,
and I mean all you do hereis index magazines. Yeah, we
(19:49):
get to live here. Boarding roomgrub's pretty good only year only what Suki?
Well, we ain't allowed to leave. We got to stay here.
The only place we go out isin the backyard. Get it? I
don't get it at all? Oh, what's a difference to selft touch?
We each get a couple of bucksafter we fixed up ten magazines. And
what's the racket, Suki? What'sthe racket? Right? None? But
(20:10):
I, hey, it's a noseconnor make sure we're all in. I
gotta get back to my buck. The same man who let me in came
through and checked each bunk. Whatwas the angle? I lay there watching,
waiting, thinking. The moonlight filledin through the bars at the windows,
(20:32):
and suddenly I remembered something else. The doors, big, heavy,
reinforced. Then the man came closeto my bunk. I could feel him
looking down at me. I musthave looked as though I was sleeping like
a baby who walked on about. And he locked the door after him.
(20:53):
All of us were prisoners in thatroom for five days. I worked,
like the rest of them in sortingmagazines and vexing them, a boring job
that made absolutely no sense. Andwe were watched but good oh, letters
in or doors locked at night, windows all barred, two men watching us,
(21:15):
checking us. And then one dayI was taken to an office one
I've never been in before. Rockhamwas there. I've caught you in,
Dan, because there's a little formalityto be gone through. Formality he is
the other man, have gone throughit, workman's compensation policy. We'll take
you to the physical examined this afternoon. It'll be all over in a jiffy.
Oh I see, Do I haveto sign anything? Oh no,
(21:36):
no, don't do Everything's been takencare of. It's a matter of form.
You want to stand, Oh sure, excellent, excellent At two this
afternoon, then so or two thatafternoon I was given a physical examination tax
but I was beginning to get anidea any a little sick, scared that
(21:59):
evening have to suffer. I gotSukie to one side and told him what
I thought. Oh, but you'recrazy, Daniel, gotta be. They
couldn't get away with anything like that. Listen to me, Suki. Every
one of us here have been insured. Not one of us has any relatives.
We've been screened carefully for just thatreason. But there's nine of us
here. They can't kill nine guysto get that insurance, Sukie, this
looks like a legitimate business. Rocklandhires us. We work here, we're
(22:22):
insured for small amount. Sure, nine men had at the nine thousand dollars
in policies. And how do weknow how many more places there are like
this? It's not to don't makesense. They'd be on a murder repture
is shooting the insurance company if it'san accident. What kind of an accident
would kill nine guys at once? And so we've got to find out,
don't you see Red got that letterfrom you. They found out about it.
(22:47):
Red must have talked with the missionto keep anyone from finding out where
you're where Red was killed and yourletter taken off of him? Dirty?
What do you want me to do? We've got to look this place over
tonight. That night, Sukie andI got out of bed before the checker
came around. We made a quicktour and found out it was a perfect
(23:10):
set up for a fire. Surefire, locked doors, barred windows,
men trapped in there. It wouldbe It would be just an accident.
What could anybody prove? Anybody whoset up at gimmick as clever as this
one would have all the angles coverageand his tracks wiped out. But what
we can do. We can't getout. We're watched every minute. We've
(23:30):
got to get out soon. Wedon't. We're cooked, and I mean
cooked. Tell the other guys, there's nine of us, only three of
them, No, Sukie, we'vegot to pretend we're still patches for them.
Let them think we're not wise, and don't tell anybody. Suki.
Sukie and I worked out a plan. The bars on the horse room windows.
(23:52):
Was it coming down pretty good?Shipping away stone with a nails slow
west, three boys, kept threeboys, We said all we need.
Sukie worked while I watched, andI worked while he watched. We finally
got three bars loose. I wasworking against time because I was sure the
(24:15):
thing would happen anytime now, andI was right, Dan Daniel, wake,
I haven't slept for three nights. What's up? It's after twelve minute?
Checker ain't been around. Okay, then to night's to night out leaving
smell that smoke. Come on,Sukie, get the other mine up.
This fire trap will burn like tinderin two minutes, Harry, Yeah,
(24:36):
Hey you guys, do you guyswake up? Come on, come on,
there's a fire. Wait a minute, Wait a minute, there's a
fire. But we'll all get outof here. He'll keep your heads,
Sukie. Open the door. It'sall right, everybody. We've got to
break that door in. Then goto the wash room. Three bars are
loose, and then take your timegetting out. We'll all make it all
(24:56):
right. Let's go out of thewashroom. The other door is too heavy
for us. Come on, we'vegot out. Not too soon. The
fire was eating that old trappis allor shoe box. Then, hey,
d look, don't let them heyscup those men. Don't let them get
in the car. Come on,they can't get away. Hit them off
(25:21):
at the garage, hed them off, hold them, sukie. Okay,
now you're gonna talk about what you'llsee. Man, listen. Then the
spire was deliberately set to Trappis killus. I'll tell you why later.
But these are the men who didit. What do we do with them?
(25:41):
Wait on, man, wait onman, I want to talk.
Yeah, I'll I'll only keep themaway from me. Sukie talk to the
rest of the men. But itwasn't over. There was still one thing
to be done. Rockland couldn't knowthings had gone wrong, so I set
up a little surprise for him,Sukie and I went to him, Yeah,
(26:04):
are you doing here? Having fun? Why aren't you would work?
Let me move in on him,Dan, Let me get my old zukie
Rockland. That didn't work. Hey, what's the matter with you? It
didn't work? I said. Everyonegot out fine, fine, got out
of what the fire? And oneof your men talked Rockland? He talked
plenty. Well, it doesn't matterbecause you promist to talk about it.
(26:29):
Dann lookout okay, d Yeah, okay. The chicken shoot straighter than that,
cling a lot straight in my handhand? Yeah, I can shoot
straighter. But this is one guyI want to save. See how he
likes bars on windows? Couldn't anyof those men have escaped from that awful
(27:04):
house? Sure? Susie. Sure. Oh, when he did, he'd
end up in an accident like red. Oh what are you thinking about MCA
Holliday. Oh nothink, Susie.I was just saying goodbye to a friend.
Oh, Suky, he wouldn't stay. No, he wouldn't. Oh
(27:27):
that reminds me. Make out acheck to the Hohope Rescue Mission. Okay,
how much I see two weeks fromand bought? I think that's what
I owe. Oh, and Susietack on enough for a melodeon? Wh
Can I do it after lunch?Sure? So what are we having?
Huh? Oh? Good nights,Susie week same time. Through the courtesy

Alan Ladd in his latest Paramount picture, Welcome Back It's kind of odd for
Dan to say good night Susy whenshe was just talking about lunch. Overall,
this was a fairly original plot.It was also pretty gruesome when you
(28:34):
think about it. These were somedespicable folks who placed a low value on
human life. I ran this throughan inflation calculator and they were willing to
kill nine people for seventy nine thousanddollars into day's dollars. And given the
expenses that went into this operation,Mate, they may have had had some
other motive like getting rid of quoteunquote undesirables with the insurance just financing the
(28:59):
continuance of the effort. Given thatAmericans a just fought World War two,
the thought of such an operation wouldhave been very plausible to the writers as
well as to the audience. Whileon podcast Alley, we got a nice
