Welcome to the Builder of All Things Podcast—where we go beyond the pages of the book and explore into the Author’s Cut! 🔥 Join Richie Breaux and Ray Bisnar as they break down each chapter in micro-episodes, giving you the behind-the-scenes insights, deeper wisdom, and real-life applications—just like a Director’s Cut for a book.

In this episode, “Facing the Storm,” we talk about what it means to stand firm when adversity rolls in — whether it’s a passing drizzle or a full-blown tornado. The storms of life come in all shapes and sizes. And the key isn’t just surviving them — it’s learning how to face them with faith and wisdom.

🌧️ From childhood memories of Midwest thunderstorms to the real-life pressures of business, family, and leadership — this episode invites us to reflect on how we respond to the shaking, the uncertainty, and the unexpected.

💡 In this conversation, we unpack:
* The difference between a small “manini” storm and a foundation-shaking one
* How to approach storms with childlike faith and adult stewardship
* Practical indicators for recognizing when a storm is coming — and how to prepare
* The balance between doing all you can and trusting all that God can
* What it means to hold onto peace, even while protecting what matters most

📖 “Face it with childlike faith, but steward it like an adult.” That’s the heart of this episode. Because while storms might come suddenly, our response doesn’t have to be reactionary — it can be rooted, steady, and full of trust in the One who’s in control.

🤍 Whether you’re in a light drizzle or an emotional F5 tornado, this conversation is for you. Not to panic — but to prepare, to believe, and to stay grounded through it all.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
so it seems like um at has been through a bunch of
storms uh and I'm assuming alsosnakes and smokes, but
particularly with storms, there's going to be small manini
ones and like big ones.
Right, how would you, or what'syour advice to people that are
going through the small ones andwhat's your advice to people

(00:38):
that are going through likemajor, you know, foundation
shaking type storms?

Speaker 2 (00:44):
yeah.
So from a practical level, Ibelieve that you got to identify
number one.
If you categorize, you're in astorm.
Yeah, you know, by looking atall three categories I shared,
you say man, this is definitelya storm, it's out of my control,
there's nothing I can do.
You know?
Uh, there are four indicatorsdiscernment indicators and
application indicators that Iwould advise that we use, and

(01:08):
it's based off my childhoodexperience in storms.
You know, growing up, in theMidwest.
You know, I was like one ofthose kids that loved I had
those.
We had a basketball rim thatyou can adjust.
I put it just at the level towhere I can dunk it.
Who didn't?
You know, we did, yeah, andthen I would get a little bit
smaller ball so I can dunk it.
Who didn't, yeah, who didn't,yeah, yeah.
And then I would get a littlebit smaller ball so I can palm
it, and then we used to havedunk contests and yeah, it would

(01:28):
be super fun.
You know, I was probably, youknow, sixth grade and acting
like I'm Sean Kemp, that's myage, y'all.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
That's cool.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
You know so, but doing these we're always outside
and so we had to be back homeby the street lights, you know.
So that's all normal.
And while we're playingsometimes we realize like, wait
a minute, it's getting kind oflike we can, you can feel it,

(01:57):
like the moisture in the airchanges.
It's sometimes a little littlewarmer, a little cooler.
The wind starts changing.
You just feel this.
You could feel it like astorm's coming, you know.
You just know, you've beenaround it.
It's just you have that likeyou just know the wind.
You look at the clouds, you cantell it's getting a little bit
dark.

(02:17):
They're kind of doing this wavyblow thing.
That's not normal and you'rejust like, okay, storm's coming,
but as thing that's not normaland you're just okay, storm's
coming, but as kids you don't gorun for shelter, you, you, and
you don't care how big it is,you're trying to get your last
hour of playing.
So when you would hear thunder,it was official, okay there's a
storm well, no, we stillwouldn't go home.
Oh, because we learned this rule, like when you hear thunder,

(02:41):
you see lightning.
You do this little count one,one thousand, two, one thousand.
And then if you see thelightning thunder, you see
lightning you do this littlecount one, 1,000, two, 1,000.
And then if you see thelightning, or if you see the
lightning and you do it, and youhear the thunder, that's how
far away by mileage right.
By mileage.
So we wait until the lastsecond because we want to
maximize our time.
Right, go playing.
But hearing the thunder andthen seeing the lightning right

(03:02):
before the rain, we would timeit pretty good, pretty like on
point.
I mean, sometimes hell wouldfall on us, that would be crazy.
But so we go back inside andthen in the Midwest I was in the
city so we didn't get like thetornado Tornadoes hit us.
We'd hear about the tornadoesoutside of us, but we would get
slammed with the thunderstormpart of it right, and it would

(03:24):
hit so hard.
You would hear like smalldebris come and slam into the
window.
You would see trees fall, youwould see electrical wires fall,
and it was just kind of a funexperience.
The next day, when the stormpassed, we would go outside as
kids grab our bikes.
There would be fire trucks.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
It sounds super fun.
I'm imagining now it'd just becool to just go on your bikes
with the boys.

Speaker 2 (03:52):
Bro it was We'd get on our bikes.
There would be smashed carswith trees.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
I mean, it was like a war scene.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
And it would happen three or four times a year and
we just want to go see all thedamage.
Obviously it was just thatchildlike faith, not thinking at
it like you know, thedestruction or the panic or
worrying about your housegetting, you know, slammed or

(04:24):
whatever by by the wind and thedestruction, um.
But then looking at it as anadult too, now that I'm older,
is like dang, you're hopingyou're, you're kind of going to
a little more of a panic or alittle worry.
Like man, I hope my car doesn'tget hit, I don't got to worry
about insurance, or I hope youknow everyone's safe.
I'm so sorry about Jim acrossthe street where his truck got

(04:46):
smashed.
I can't imagine what he's goingthrough.
You know there's the wholeadult side of looking at it too
and the responsibility of, liketrying to protect your assets
and people and everyone's safe.
So you know, when you're youngyou don't think about those
things.
But it really made me thinkabout, like, the balance of and
this is to answer your questionwhat would I share to the people
that different levels of stormsis.

(05:07):
I do believe that we want toaddress it with a balance, with
a heart or a like a childlikefaith, but also an adult
stewardship, you know likethere's an a balance of doing
all you know you can do, youknow, but at the same time have
a faith aspect, knowing thatGod's in control of all things.
And just having that faith, understanding like, hey, it will

(05:31):
pass and in, whatever happens, god allowed and we'll have to
address it when the time comes.
