Entre 1936 y 1938, cerca de 35 mil hombres y mujeres, procedentes de más de 50 países, llegaron a España, como voluntarios y voluntarias, para defender la República contra el avance del fascismo. Fue un extraordinario ejemplo de solidaridad humana y desobediencia civil, dado que, con la excepción de la Unión Soviética y México, la comunidad internacional cerró filas detrás del Comité de no intervención. Una vez terminada la guerra civil española, con la derrota de la República, los voluntarios supervivientes que regresaron a sus patrias fueron tratados con sospecha, en algunos casos como “traidores”. Culpables de haber defendido un ideal de libertad, dignidad y de solidaridad.
