Speaker 1 (00:00):
Game week is he Eddie Garrison. We are back Colts
Corner with myself Kevin Bowen Wednesday, September third. Again we
will follow kind of that normal regular season schedule, hopefully
late Monday morning Wednesday afternoon, and you know this week
pretty much the Soul Preview podcast will be right here
coming at you on this week one Colts a slight
(00:22):
favorite inside of their own building coming up here on
Sunday afternoon. Go over a little bit of the regular
season depth chart that always I think involves maybe a
couple of interesting takeaways, Miami Dolphins notes, and some Twitter
questions as well. Mister Garrison, Welcome to the twenty twenty
five NFL season.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
A freaking men, Kevin, A freaking men. We made it,
we did.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
We made it quite the offseason that it was for
the Colts, and here they are seven and a half
the over under on wins we and all the big
picture stuff and they will have a different starting quarterback
of course coming up here in week one, so a
lot to get into. And again about hand half dozen
Twitter questions as well.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Let's start kb with the depth chart, the first official
depth chart for the official or.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Unofficial by the way, for the upcoming season. I always
call it official because they're sending it out, But you know,
I guess it's not total gospel. You know, it's not
like you're going to it here to every little bit
of it, you know. I guess I'll start at the
of the or designation behind Jonathan Taylor. You know a
lot of people that are curious about, Okay, where is
Tyler Goodson health wise? I just left Colts practice. They
(01:30):
look about as healthy as I've ever seen them. Frankly,
head into a game, I don't know if anybody will
be listening on the injury report. Goods and was practicing,
So you know, does that mean he is the backup?
I think when healthy he probably emerged into that role
DJ Giddens though as a rookie, how much do you
want on his plate? And then you know, if you
look at last year, they gave Jonathan Taylor a heavy workload,
(01:53):
particularly late in the season. He carried the ball a
ton late in the year. I mean, you go to
wide out as you would expect, Pittman and Pearson downs
to the starters. How much is Ady Mitchell play whenever
one's healthy? You know, he was a round of fifteen
Ish snap guy last year when everyone is healthy, is
(02:13):
that gonna be the same weekly plan for him? Very
interested in that. You flip over to defense. Joe Bachi
is listed as the starter, so that's a flip from
what we saw in training camp when Cam mc groan
was the starter, next to Hire Franklin. So it'll be
Bachi and again Franklin get to take an eleven on
(02:34):
eleven rep in a in a preseason game and really
probably limited eleven on eleven reps throughout camp for him.
So I will be curious, you know, how much does
Miami try to test those linebackers. You know, Devon a
Chan is quite the dynamic back. Do they get any
isolated matchups on those linebackers come Sunday?
Speaker 2 (02:53):
Olly Gordon is the name to watch as well.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Right, I know a lot of people are intrigued by him,
and then you go to the secondary. I mean, Xavier
Howard has been a starter since the day he was
signed August eighteenth, and it looks like he will again
be a starter coming up on Sunday, and same thing applies.
He hasn't played football in a year. How does the
former team of his try to test him in that area?
(03:20):
You know, we didn't watch a ton of practice when
Howard was there, but I can think of one rep
where Alec Pierce was lined up one on one with him,
and I think you know how that story probably went.
It was Pierce with the easy cook of Howard. So
is Mike McDaniel trying to get some isolated moments on
Howard with Tyreek Cabell, with Jalen Wattle, et cetera, et cetera.
(03:41):
So those are a couple other takeaways I had again
one of seventy five thefan dot com a few more
on that front.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
Is there something that we need to know about Jalen Jones?
And asked why, No matter who it's been, he's been
the backup corner, whether it was justin Wally or now
Xavian Howard, who's not even been here for a month. Yeah,
that's a fair point. You know, I've always kind of
like Jalen Jones a little bit. You know, you and
I have talked about this eddy of who's a lou
guy and who's not a lou guy. I understand, I know,
(04:09):
and so I'm just trying to provide I guess, the
potential context around it. Now again, he has also missed
ample practice time. Granted, Howard just missed it your football.
Do you look at that as fresh legs or do
you look at that as he's got some brust and knockoff?
Speaker 1 (04:23):
So and Lass, I'm missing something. I would think right
now Jones is going to start the season having to
earn that job back, and we'll see. I you know,
the cults are very old at corner. I mean they'll
start a twenty nine, a thirty, and a thirty two
year old in that three corner packets. That's probably one
of the oldest trio of corner pairings or groupings in
the nickel you've seen quite some time here. But again, overall,
(04:46):
pretty healthy bunch here. And we'll see it all play
out coming up Sunday at one o'clock.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
In that game, they are facing the Miami Dolphins. Indianapolis
is a one and a half point favorite at the moment,
and the money line is pretty much a pick him.
I mean at this point it's minus one oh six
for Miami, minus one ten for the Colts over under
forty six and a half. Kevin and Ile make our
predictions later in the podcast, but examining the Miami Dolphins,
(05:12):
KB we know the quarterback is two On Tugaviola Devon
ah Chin. He has been banged up during the preseason.
I think it was with a calf issue. They've had
so much this offseason and dating back even the last
year with Tyreek Hill and that whole situation. Jigilen Waddell
is there. They trade for Darren Waller, bringing him out
of retirement. He's now they're starting tight end. They have
(05:32):
a really, really really banged up secondary. If you didn't
catch Kevin there. Darren Waller did not practice today. But
this could be an opportunity for Daniel Jones coming out
of Week one to be able to have some success
in the air just because of how depleted Miami is
with injuries to their cornerback room.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
Yeah. Yeah, I think that's a good overview, and thank
you for laying it out like that. Let's start with
the obvious and it's toua. I think it kind of
goes without saying. But I don't know, I feel like
two of sometimes there's a pretty negative connotation associated with him,
like they are a much better, totally different football team
(06:12):
when he's out there versus when he's not. A record wise,
there's seventeen and eleven over the last two years when
he plays a completion percentage wise, he led the league
last year. And you know, when you think back to
last year's matchup a lot it's different. No Jonathan Taylor
in that game. No, obviously, Anthony Richardson started. You know again,
it was Tyler Huntley and Tim Boyle in that game.
So so much is going to be different, but that
(06:35):
offense just it operates probably one of the more drastic
ways in a one to eighty from their starter to
what their backup situation looked like. Zach Taylor is actually
their Zach Taylor. Why am I acting like that's not
his name. Here's a kid from BYU who likes.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Moms, Zach Taylor, Zach Wilson, Zack Wilson. Zach Taylor's the
Bengals coach, and his brother is at Utah.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
He's a ute. Oh really, okay, good luck to the
moms and not pro bo whatever Utahs. So they will
operate a whole whole lot differently. Like it's hard for
me to look back last year's game. I don't know
if you remember that game that was the Grant Steward game.
You know, tons of tackles and Shayguna Lubi has that
huge strip and the Boo Birds are out and.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
I was painfully in attendance at that game.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
I mean it was a sixteen to ten game. It
was it was a slog. It was such a miserable
game there. And you know, when you look at these
two franchises, they're both kind of right in the middle.
And if you look at like hot seed odds, I
think it's Brian Dable number one, and then right there
you're gonna find Mike McDaniel and Shane Sykin second and third.
You know, I echoed this when the schedule came out
(07:45):
in May Eddie to me, if you're ranking the most
important games on the schedule, this one would rank right
up there with Henny and you know, Houston probably deserves
spots one and two, but I put this three or
four just based off what the wild card landscape could
look like. Yes, obviously there's some Week one importance, like
I understand all that, but even if this is well
week five game or Week ten game, I think it
(08:07):
carries that type of weight to it. We know the
Week one streak, it's well documented. Ten to one, you've
lost four times or lost or tight, I should say
four times the favorite.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
Thank you to all of those that responded via DM and.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
Oh, yeah, that was our fantasy football question, wasn't it?
Yeah it was. Yeah, six of the eleven games out
of by one scorer, so age old, age old. It
kind of goes without saying there a little bit of
a sneaky item Eddie for Sunday. Both teams I think
have placekicker questions. The Colts will obviously have Spencer Schrader.
He has kicked just five field goals in his NFL career,
(08:48):
kicked for three teams last year. Jason Sanders is hurt
for the Dolphins, very accomplish kicker Riley Patterson looks to
be the guy they are going with. He also kicked
for three teams last year, four of seven in those appearances.
So definitely some fourth down questions. I'm curious how both
(09:08):
quarterbacks or I should say both play callers will handle that. Obviously,
get a lot of Jimmers say tribute inside the stadium
with him going the Ring of Honor. I believe everybody
in attendance gets the for the Boss shirts there for
Jim Mersay and I guess you got to go over
to the Daniel Jones side of it, Eddie, it's you know,
(09:32):
the thought from Shane Sikeing today is with Daniel Jones,
stay steady, find completions, stay on track, don't make bad
plays worse. Know how to throw it, know when to
throw it and no where to throw it. Yep, that's
the thought process there. And you know I've got scar
tissue from watching it unfold on Sunday night. And I
(09:53):
don't know if it's exactly apples to apples, but Eddie,
I always find it a very fine balance in trying
to be conservative as a passing offense and being too horizontal.
And I think if you watch Notre Dame play football
on Sunday night, they were way too horizontal. And at
some point your singles, in your attempts to try to
(10:15):
get an infield single or a bunt single, it adds
up in you not being able to move it methodically
all night long. Can you carve out three, four, five
eighty r drives across ten plays? That's difficult to do,
but right now that's kind of the goal for the
Colts here. And you know you were at training camp enough.
(10:35):
I don't think you know nothing is going to wow you.
From a Daniel Jones standpoint, the wow throws are kind
of the nerdy Hey do you see him hit Tyler
Warren in stride? Did you see that rpo timing to
Michael Pittman Junior? Like, it's going to be those things
that we'll fall into that category here. So here we go,
you know, first and ten becoming second and two. I
(10:56):
guess a couple of Jones questions. I have eddie'sist, How
will his legs be used? M h in twenty twenty
two is a huge weapon. How will they be used?
Because I do think he has that ability, we just
haven't seen this much in the last two years. And
then how much will they use tempo? You know, they
have been a very tempo usage team under Shane Stike
(11:19):
in they love to use it after big plays it
honestly Stike and I think catches the opponent off guard
quite often with the use of tempo. Yeah, and also
just the sneaky timeouts he makes you take, you know,
those sorts of things I think Stike and frankly, I
think he absolutely loves that stuff and they've been really
good in that area. So those are some Jones things
(11:40):
to keep an eye on there was part of me.
It's kind of an awkward interaction in the locker room
today where we're waiting for Jones to talk to the media.
Sarah Franklin's chatting with the media. Next thing, you know,
Jones walks in, and you know, naturally people gravitate towards
a quarterback, even though it's quite the boring experience frankly
listening Jones chat. But you know, here I am going
(12:01):
from Ziyara Franklin's locker to Daniel jones locker, And I
thought to myself for a second, remember when Zara Franklin
said on his podcast last year he wanted to play
Daniel Jones. Do you remember that? Yeah, like you know,
and I forget exactly how went with EJ Speed, but
it's like, can't we play the Giants? And I think
he act like he was catching an interception on like
(12:23):
the video of the podcast, like Daniel Jones, and he
mentioned that name. I'm like, wow, and now here these
two dudes are captains together on the same football team. Wild,
isn't it. And he kind of like called him out
last year, So I guess that's NFL life. But yeah,
that's kind of Dolphin's notes defensively, Eddie, they're very different
in the front seven. It seems they're very different. But
(12:44):
like Jalen phillipsdon't playing last years game.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
Top Robinson was a very impressive rookie last year for them.
Speaker 1 (12:48):
Right a high draft pick, Bradley Chubb, Matthew Judahn, they
signed a couple weeks ago Kenneth Grant. I know this
might sound crazy to some people, but if Kenneth Grant
was on the board, I believe he was taken just
before the Colts. I think he might have Tyler Warren
in a different uniform. Really, I think Colts were that
high on Kenneth Grant. There, big dude out of Marraville.
That would be the region for those unfamiliar with the
(13:09):
state of Indiana, And by the region, I should mean
that's like Northwest Indiana played at Michigan there. So he's
a big body for the Dolphins. We'll see how effective
he can be early in his career out of Michigan.
And of course, Mika Fitzpatrick, you know that was a
big trade in the off season for Jalen Ramsey. A
lot of uncertainty at corner. As you mentioned, Eddie, We've
seen Mikam make some big plays against the Colts before.
(13:31):
What's kind of left in the tank for him? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (13:33):
Their cornerbacks are Jalen Phillips, Jack Jones. And then how
about this, I love this name, storm Duck. That's such
an awesome name, Storm Duck. Gosh, you want to take
a guess from where he played his college ball?
Speaker 1 (13:49):
Did he play at Oregon? No? Did he play at
Saint John's No?
Speaker 2 (13:53):
No, I got nothing in the Midwest.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
Storm Duck. He played at Illinois. Oh? No, Louisville. Play
at Louisville. One thing to note too, as you ran
off those secondary guys. Juju Brents is with the Dolphins. Yeah,
I've listed a little lower on the depth chart, but
I'll be curious if he's dressing.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
And yeah he's behind Rusul Douglas.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
How much he plays if it all coming up on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
You did mention their D line. I want to talk
about their O line because I think this is a
This would be a good test for that Colt's defensive
line to see how disruptive they can be. Because they've
got two new faces. I'm not even even try to
say who their starting left guard is because it's it's
one of those Hawaiian names, Kevin, and unless I hear
how it's pronounced, I can't pronounce it. He was a
(14:37):
second round pick for them this past draft. James Danielsonah right, Yes,
jonah s the James Daniels. They signed him in free
agency and then Patrick Paul as a second year player.
He was also a former second round pick for the
Dolphins a year ago. So a lot of youth and
inexperience up front for this Dolphins crew. Can the Colts
(14:57):
capitalize on that? I think he's going to be the biggest.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
This Yeah, vital to win that area because that disrupts
to his timing and I think he's right up there
with any quarterback in the league in terms of timing
and rid them. And obviously there's been a lot of
talk in Miami for those unfamiliar with the deep ball,
and you know him and Tyreek on the same page
and all of that. So there are a lot of
storylines to this matchup. In the spread right now is,
(15:20):
like you said, pretty close to a pick. The Cults
are a flight favorite in this one, and Miami's got
the long playoffs drought, so it'll be a fun one
on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (15:28):
This is a must win game for both of these squads,
and we've got a ton of Twitter questions to get to,
including some from last week. So are you ready for him, Kevin,
Let's do it, brother. Starting with Vince, he wants to
know if you can think of a year of Colts
football with less buzz around it Dan this season as
a lifelong fan, Vince is thinking nineteen ninety seven, which
(15:48):
was the year prior to Peyton Manning. That'd be the
last year the Colts had zero buzz.
Speaker 1 (15:54):
Yeah, it's interesting, Vince, you bring up ninety seven. Eddie.
I don't know if I shared this on the podcast,
but I said at one of our morning shows from
Grant Park during training camp, I said to James Boyd,
like I can't recall the last time as a franchise,
and this will be my my fifteenth year covering the Colts,
the last time the three pillars have all faced such
(16:15):
serious question marks and the three pillars of an organization
to me GM head coach and quarterback. I think you
have that right now with Chris Bauer, Chainssiching, Anthony Richardson
and Mike Chappell, who's covered the Colts since they moved
from Baltimore happened to be in the vicinity. I said, Chap,
you'd be the perfect person to ask. He brought up
ninety seven. You know. After thinking about it, He's like, yeah,
(16:35):
I would have to go back all the way there.
And you know, again, I've heard that crowds were I
believe the lowest they've been at Grand Park in their
seven years. Preseason TV ratings very low compared to what
they are used to. So yeah, I think in general,
Vince is largely right. I think there is a I
(16:59):
actually got a tw you know, now that we're in
the regular season mode, I'm gonna, you know, do these
daily Wednesday notebooks have all got a lot of information
tidbits in there on that upcoming game and what happens
at media availability. And when I tweeted out the one today,
the first response I got was, I believe the responder said,
beginning of the end starts on Sunday. And when you
(17:25):
say that beginning of the end starts on Sunday, I
can hear people out on it. You know, I've brought
it up before. Does this have the feel of like
Chuck mcgonald's twenty seventeen season, m where you knew Chris
Ballard wasn't gonna keep it moving forward? Is there a
little bit of a vibe of that? And while that
might be the case, you know, so much can change
(17:46):
if all of a sudden, September starts to turn around
and you imagine winning an open up for the first
time since twenty thirteen. And I mean, if you look
at the schedule, Eddie, they could be favored in four
their first six. Yeah, I mean it is very I
mean it's right there for you to the home games
and a rookie quarterback being one of the two road starts,
and we'll see where Matthew Stafford's back is by week four.
(18:06):
So yes, I think big picture, you do have some questions,
but like you know, record wise, I'm not I guess
I'll say right now, I'd probably say nine to eight
something right around there. I don't see it just bottoming
out by any means. So, but yes, from an apathy standpoint, Vince,
(18:27):
I would say it's been a constant theme. I mean
I hear it almost daily from different people. This is
how I feel season ticket holder, blah blah.
Speaker 2 (18:35):
Blah, all that Jamie's states. All the talk about where
the blame lies with regards to Anthony Richardson, I have
seen a few claim it was the evaluation. Jamie believes
it was Nate Atkins on his podcast that said he
was the only person at Anthony Richardson's pro day from dying.
(18:56):
He said Morocco Brown did end up there, but by
accident with a decision of this magnitude. How can this
be defended?
Speaker 1 (19:05):
Oh, I shout out tod ad Adkins did a really
nice job on the Colts beat. Yeah, off to cover
the rams for the Athletic. Good for him, Good dude,
good dude, asks really good questions. In my opinion, I
think he creates great content. I enjoyed reading his work,
and him and Julie Erickson were a great duo for
the Star. And of course Joel will be there doing
the heavy lifting until they find somebody else. You know, Jamie,
(19:30):
I guess when we come back to the Richardson question,
you know, every time, I'll continue to use the phrase
organizational failure and the evaluation. H You know, I think
Eddiot's a really difficult balance beam to have to walk
across for organizations when it comes to draft. You want
to keep your cards close to the vest, but you
(19:51):
also have to be absolutely psychotic about the background in
the digging of that and the FBI nature that you
have to have in finding out so much. You know,
I've always heard that, you know, the cold Tatsom Intrigue
and Jordan Love, but then late in the process they
backed off because of that quarterback character. And you know,
(20:13):
you kind of see how the drafts have played out
and the organizations have played out for Indian for green
Bay since then. You know. I thought Zach Keifer had
a really good piece in The Athletic earlier this week
about you know, kind of quarterbacks and not working out,
and you know, the Kevin O'Connell quote I think went
pretty viral last year that you know, organizations fail young
quarterbacks more than young quarterbacks fail organizations. I think there's
(20:36):
a lot of truth to that. Obviously, there's chunks of
the pie on both sides of it. I thought the
Ballad quote within the piece I was interesting was it's
easier to find one when you've got one. I don't
remember him ever saying that before. Now he referenced specifically
his own history Alex Smith with Kansas City them drafting
(20:56):
Mahomes with the big trade up. He also brought up
Joe Flacco. To Lamar Jackson, I believe that the next
year's draft, after the Mahomes won. Obviously you've seen it
with Green Bay, you know they are the poster child.
Love it with Farvan Rodgers and then Love and Rodgers
as well, and that's worked out beautifully. You know, it
kind of goes back to that twenty twenty draft. And
(21:17):
I know we've brought this up a lot, but you know,
if you thought Rivers, if you thought you're gonna get
him sign them, which obviously you would have known that
before the draft, and you don't trade for Buckner, would
that have been the time to go ahead and try
to do the Hey, let's pass the torch. Let's have
Philip Rivers be the starter, maybe two years at best,
(21:39):
and then he can pass the torch to the young guy.
And of course that draft had the three quarterbacks of
tu and Burrow and Herbert and then Jordan Love in
the twenties and Hurts in the wherever he went fifties
in there. So yeah, I think, you know, I don't
it'd be unfair of me to probably make judgment on
(22:00):
exactly how much homework they did, how much homework the
Colts did on Anthony Richardson. But I do have questions there.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
I have questions on like when Ballard was talking about
just the position and how you you know draft one.
Yet I always remember him saying, you don't draft once
to draft one, Like when you draft one, you have
to have a plan in place, and you have to
know what you're going to do once you get him,
and pretty much just went out the window as soon
as they got Anthony Richardson.
Speaker 1 (22:28):
Yeah, it's funny you bring that up, Attie. I went
back and started looking at some old Combine press conferences
with Ballard in recent days. I forget what quote I
was exactly looking for, but I came across him asking
about what you want in a young quarterback, and he
was asked specifically about accuracy, and this is probably like
twenty twenty, twenty twenty one, and he said in his answer,
you can't dramatically improve accuracy. Well, four years later, hmm,
(22:53):
that's what you tried to do and are trying to do.
I guess I should keep it in the present sense
for an outleast, so you know, again, Zach's peace I
thought was really good. Matt. Matt Hasselbeck said, you know,
he used the analogy of like scouts and coaches when
it comes to the draft and quarterbacks is kind of
like builders and real itters. They're in the same business,
(23:15):
but they don't always get along or they don't always
have the same sort of objectives that they're looking for
a different thing.
Speaker 2 (23:21):
Mm hmm.
Speaker 1 (23:21):
And that can be said, I think at times for
scouts and coaches. Now I don't think that applies to Richardson,
like I think Change Second was a huge Richardson believer,
But it is interesting just kind of thinking back on
all that.
Speaker 2 (23:33):
Next up is Dan and Dan has a question about
Daniel Jones. Dan states Daniel Jones could go seventeen and
zero win the MVP this season, and Dan would still
want nothing to do with him after the year. Dan
personally expects a top ten pick to come next draft
with the Indianapolis Colts. He can't remember a time where
(23:55):
the collective fan base had this much hatred and disappointment
going into a season. I love and trust with this
organization is at an all time low. Is there any
reason to really watch this upcoming dumpster fire? Other than
hoping for Anthony Richardson's redemption arc.
Speaker 1 (24:14):
Yeah, Dan, it's again, It's been a while since I
think this much pent up frustration from the fan base,
and it is teetering on one of those years of like,
you know again, is this the Nate Byorker in year
to get to Rick Carlisle? Is it one more year
of Mike Woodson to get to Darren de Freese? Is it?
Speaker 2 (24:30):
You know, those sorts of years I g Brian Kelly
to get to Marcus Freeman.
Speaker 1 (24:34):
Well, I think that'd be unfair of labeling Brian Kelly
like that, But you know, one more year of Charlie Weiss,
I guess to get to Brian Kelly is probably probably
the better way to put it. But does it have
that feel and look? I mean, I think when when
I say pent up frustration, the lack of real January football,
Ballard getting in the ninth year, another quarterback not working out.
(24:57):
Seemingly every time Shane Styken speaks, I get a tweet
of somebody saying they'd rather listen to Charlie Brown's teacher
and listen to psichin oppressor. Like it's just all of it,
just snowballs and avalanches and again, you can change the
tune at least in the immediacy with getting off to
(25:18):
a good start, like four and two is right there
on paper if you look at the schedule. But if
for some reason it does not go like that, I mean, yeah,
it could turn and hurry and Carl Rosa Gordon could
have a huge decision to make very early. And I'm
not married to like a tangible result will decide these
(25:40):
guys in their features. I will not. I mean unless
something changes based off what you know until I hear,
I don't think it's as black and white as like,
if they make the playoffs, they are safe. I'm not
ready to say that. And again, an NFL season the
movie might at the same ending, but it could look,
(26:00):
you know, very different in getting there. And I do
think it's important to kind of view it in that
light there. I mean, if you look at the Pacers
purely from their win lost total in the first couple
of Carlisle years here last couple of years, you wouldn't
necessarily act like those are great seasons. But they were
clearly on the arrow was pointing up, I should say,
(26:20):
and trajectorial wise, that obviously turned into what it's turned
into here the last couple of years. So there was
just a clear direction on where things were going. Yeah,
and a clear positive direction. You know right now the
direction is just in such a negative light.
Speaker 2 (26:34):
Colts practice report out only player on it, Tyler Goodson
limited participant with that elbow injury.
Speaker 1 (26:42):
All fifty three Colts practice today. He does have a
big old rap on that thing.
Speaker 2 (26:46):
To kind of piggyback off of this a little bit, Kevin,
you think it's more likely. I guess I should say
which is more likely the Colts have a top ten
pick or a bottom ten pick. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (26:59):
I did this Stephen Holder earlier. Today. I did top
eight versus bottom eight. I did the quartiles. Ah nice,
So you know bottom ten that means you're a playoff team.
That means you've probably won the division or you know,
I Africa exactly how the NFL does their order based
off playoff results. But I would say, yeah, bottom ten,
(27:19):
like a twenty two to thirty two, twenty three to
thirty two. Yeah, I mean, you know, they've been eight
nine to nine eighties the last two years. I think
the defensive system is important to change it up, and
I think the addition of Tyler Warren is big for
this football team. Not thinking that Daniel Jones is going
to come in here and be, you know whatever, Alex
(27:40):
Smith two point zero or but you know that's the
thought there. The thought is Ryan Tannehill with the Titans,
Alex Smith with whatever teams you want to put out.
Speaker 2 (27:48):
There, rock Party with San Francisco.
Speaker 1 (27:50):
Sure you know that's that is the thought. And for
that to happen, you need to be damn near perfect
in the other areas. Taylor can't get hurt. The old line,
can't take a stay back. Your pass catchers need to look
as good as they look on paper.
Speaker 2 (28:03):
Those sorts of things Doc Prescott in the early years
in Dallas, that's kind of what they were doing hypothetically.
Hear from Bailey. If Tom Brady would have signed with
the Colts in that twenty twenty offseason, does he win
another Super Bowl?
Speaker 1 (28:21):
Oh boy, so you would have just instead of getting Rivers,
you would have gotten Brady. You still would have traded
the thirteenth pick for Buckner. I yeah, I don't over
the seventh seed against Buffalo. All three of those games
on the road.
Speaker 2 (28:41):
Oh, I thought they had a game at home against Philly,
Did they I thought their wild card game was against
the Eagles at home.
Speaker 1 (28:49):
Defense was just wrecked Mahomes in the Super Bowl there.
So I don't know, Bailey, I like some good offseason hypotheticals,
but I'm not ready to say that just yet. I
I still think get through the AFC at that point
was just a different sort of juggernaut. I granted Tampa
had a hell of a run, but I don't know
if I can go there yet. You imagine Brady lifting
the Lombardi for the Indianapolis cults.
Speaker 2 (29:10):
I got my years mixed up. They were at Washington,
at New Orleans, at Green Bay. So yeah, all three
on the road.
Speaker 1 (29:15):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
And of course is that the year the Super Bowl
was in Tampa?
Speaker 1 (29:19):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (29:19):
Correct, Yeah, so they got a home game of the
biggest Granddaddy of them all right around down Twitter questions,
mayhool kb. I love your analysis in the organizational failure
that is the Anthony Richardson expire, right all the way
back from the scouting to the three years of quote
unquote development. From all accounts, Richardson is currently better than
(29:43):
he was a post training camp of twenty twenty four
and twenty twenty three. However, this is the year they
decide that he isn't ready or consistent enough to start,
wasn't or wouldn't The right idea have been to have
him sit behind in a acomplished veteran for the start
of his rookie season. As one of the biggest projects
(30:05):
in league history, Richardson directly needed a Hauselbeck type mentor
at the beginning of his career. My question basically is,
how are these people getting paid to run a multi
million dollar organization like this?
Speaker 1 (30:22):
Yeah, you know, it's you know, I brought up that
ballot quote earlier, Eddie of like, you know, sometimes the
best succession plan is a draft one when you have one.
I don't think the Colts made a very concerdered effort
and haven't done really in any of the three seasons
with Richardson to find another quarterback in the room to
serve mostly as a mentor. And I do think that
(30:44):
is an important part of the maturation process, developmental process,
however you want to label it. For a young quarterback,
I think that's really key, really key, particularly when the
position coach is not this whatever thirty year old veteran
or you know, a guy that's maybe played the position.
You know, that to me, I think is I think
(31:07):
that is a misstep in this process. And again, you know,
go back to how Andrew Luck was treated with Clyde Christensen,
with Bruce Arians and then Matt hassel Back in three
of his first four years. So that's just a very
very different way. I mean, again that's Andrew Luck. I
mean that's very different than how that was handled. So
(31:29):
that to me is just I think it's an important
starting base when you're trying to, you know, make something
out of the devilmental project that is Andrew Luck or
excuse me, that is Anthony Richardson with that. So yeah,
it just look, it's obviously hard, and what the cults
(31:52):
were attempting, I think it was very difficult. But some
early steps that were put in place, I think a
could aided you. But this this what makes a little
bit of the Richardson things so difficult. And I still
get this now from people. People are like, hey, this
is great, He's finally gonna sit, He's finally going to learn,
and it's like, okay, well a, he's also sat before.
(32:12):
He's sat for nineteen of his thirty four games, and
then b whenever he gets back in the lineup, Eddie.
He is still only fifteen games into his NFL playing career. Yeah,
I mean that's still a very low number. He's what
fifteen plus how many games at Florida thirteen, he'll be
twenty eight games into his college or NFL playing career.
(32:33):
How many college and NFL games is bow Next played in? Yeah?
How many college NFL games as Jade Daniels played Bryce Young? Yeah,
I mean seventy ish. And if let's say Rickson goes
the entire season without it, those guys are going to
be close to ninety and Richardson's going to be stuck
here again at whatever twenty eight, whatever the exact number is.
So you know, is there still more on field maturation
(32:56):
that has tocur? Like that is? I think one of
the very difficult things about the entire project is there's
so many layers to it. As much as he probably
needed to observe, he also needed to play. Yeah, and
we are still like everything that's happened to Richardson in
(33:19):
the last twelve months, we still really haven't gotten to
Chris Ballard's biggest concern exiting last season, can't you stay healthy?
Speaker 2 (33:28):
Now?
Speaker 1 (33:29):
Sure he missed some time in the spring for shoulder shortness,
and obviously he got knocked out of the Baltimore game,
didn't miss any practice time, But still, like that still
is the question of you know, like, let's say he
goes back in there. Let's say Jones gets whatever, finally
gets benched after Thanksgiving yep, and Richardson plays the final
five games and for the final five look really good,
(33:51):
and you missed the playoffs by a game or two?
Mm hm, what do you do? Do you hand them
the starting keys for twenty twenty six? Does the new
regime come to make that call? Is there a new
gene like all of these sorts of things that apply
to it. So, yeah, it just it's so damn complicated.
Speaker 2 (34:12):
All right, KB. In conclusion here we have to make
our prediction. But before that, I want to give you
some like rapid fire type questions, have a little fun
here to run out the podcast.
Speaker 1 (34:21):
All right, are you ready? Yes?
Speaker 2 (34:24):
Who is going to be the surprising team this year?
Think like the Denver Broncos or the Washington Commanders of
a year ago. Who's going to be that team this year?
Speaker 1 (34:32):
It's a good question. I kind of like Atlanta would
they qualify? I don't know.
Speaker 2 (34:38):
Are they too good? How about do I have to
go here? I mean, I said the New England Patriots.
Speaker 1 (34:42):
I think Atlanta, Yeah, I mean Drake May. I do
think showed a lot of promise last year. The AFC.
I think it's hard.
Speaker 2 (34:49):
Really and that division too could be up for grafts.
For second, I'm gonna go with to Atlanta.
Speaker 1 (34:53):
I think their playoff drought is pretty long long as well.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
Team that was good last year that will not be
good this year.
Speaker 1 (35:02):
I'm nervous about the Lions losing both coordinators.
Speaker 2 (35:05):
Even though they promoted two guys within, You're still worry yeah, yeah.
And then a team that's gonna have a dumpster fire season,
think of like you know where everything's gone wrong?
Speaker 1 (35:15):
Like I really hope it's the Cowboys.
Speaker 2 (35:17):
Okay, I have to take them off the board because
that is like the proverbial answer here, the clear favorite.
Speaker 1 (35:21):
I hope it's the Bears. Hate the Bears, all go
I'll go Bengals. Really, even though I have Joe Burrow,
like on some fantasy teams, I just for some reason
think if it blows up, it's really gonna blow up.
But it feels like it's all Ticking Burrow, Chase Hendrickson, Higgins,
(35:46):
Zach Taylor, like does he have job security? Does he
not have job security?
Speaker 2 (35:50):
Like talk about a coach, it could be on the
hot seat.
Speaker 1 (35:52):
They did the fire the coordinator thing, I kept the
head coach. Is that going to continue there? I will
go Colts. I'll about twenty three twenty Colts.
Speaker 2 (36:04):
I'll go Dolphins twenty three twenty and wrap up the
fire quiz here, KB, which player benefits the most from
Daniel Jones starting, Josh Downs or Tyler Warren?
Speaker 1 (36:15):
Yeah, I mean those are the two definitely answers. I
guess that's surely who benefits more. I mean, we got
a fantasy draft tonight. I wanted to take Warren early
in all these fantasy drafts, but he has gone early
with all these. So yeah, he's soaring up those boards.
I will say Warren, and I think they will use
Warn in some short yardage ways that look very similar
to how penns. They use them very creatively.
Speaker 2 (36:34):
KB enjoy being back inside lucas Oli. Stam for some
real football on Sunday Coltscorner with Kevin bow and that
was Ddie Garrison.
Speaker 1 (36:40):
I'm Kevin bow and we'll talk to you late Monday morning.
NFL season is here.
