Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back. It is Wednesday, October twenty second, Week eight
of the NFL season is upon US Colts and Titans.
First repeat opponent here coming up Sunday for twenty five
Colts and Titans. Nothing says nice little AFC South matchup
like that, Eddie Garrison? How you doing brother?
Speaker 2 (00:19):
I'm doing well. Why is this game out four to
twenty five? So yeah, I get the.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
I get this question at a lot this week. I
believe assumption here. First off, most bye weeks of any
week in the NFL. I think we have six teams
on buys.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Yeah, it's by mcgednon, right, So.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
You gotta slot somebody in the four o'clockers.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Pray for your fantasy teams out there.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
Yes, well mine has already done. So you got three
four o'clock games, you know in May. Could you've talked
yourself into cam Ward versus Anthony Richardson if you're a
TV network, Maybe again, we're stretching it, but somebody's gotta
be in the four o'clock windows. So I guess that's
a little bit of reason why I think Denver Dallas
maybe is the other one. And then there's only one
(00:57):
game on Fox like Saints Bucks maybe something like that.
So it's not great, but nonetheless four to twenty five.
And the other weird thing, Eddie two with how the
schedule is, I do think the Colts are benefiting from
facing camboard twice in the first two months of the season.
You know, I would not want to see a rookie quarterback.
And you know, remember how Drake May's you know, rookie
season kind of got a lot better last year. I
(01:19):
would not want to see that kind of Week fourteen,
week fifteen. And then the other thing too is if
you look at the home slate, you know, it's been
a very front loaded homes schedule. They won't after Sunday.
They won't play another home game until November thirtieth. That
is the Houston Texans, and that's the only home game
(01:41):
between Sunday and the Monday of Christmas. So the Colts
have a very road Germany schedule coming up here. I
believe it their final nine. I want to say only
three or at home, five road, and then the one
neutral site game. But yeah, San Francisco is that December twentieth,
second game on a Monday night. So when you look
(02:02):
at the schedule here, it's you know it's at Pittsburgh
in Germany against Atlanta. You go bye week, then you
go to Kansas City. You do have the home game
with Houston. I believe it's back to back trips of
Jacksonville and Seattle before you have that Monday night or
against the forty nine ers. So definitely we'll get a
lot of road games or just outside of Lucosolo Stadium
(02:22):
for the Colts.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Let's start with the news items with today's podcast. Kevin, Now,
I before we get to actually like injury report stuff
players out on the field, I want to start here.
Obviously there's been a lot of chatter, especially on this podcast,
but within the sports media landscape here in general in
Indianapolis about you know, the trade deadline and you know
the Colts, like do you make a move at edge?
(02:43):
Do you make a move for cornerback? Yesterday there was
a meeting between Max Crosby and the front office that
they will not be shopping or listening to the officer him.
So that's a player that's off the board. You still
believe that edge rusher is the number one priority or
should be the number one priority for the Colts. Yes,
the nine over cornerback. Yeah, I do. I know joey Erson.
(03:04):
We had him on the show on Tuesday.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
He went corner. Now, both of them are premium positions,
and I think both could use an upgrade. But if
you had to make me pick one, I'll go edge.
I'll probably expand a little bit on that because I
think we got a really good Twitter question. I forget
who was from, but kind of pushed back on the
I think the it's a little overblown some of the
pass rush, whatever disagreement or you know, wanting more out
(03:28):
of that group, however you want to define it. So
I'll probably wait till that. But yeah, I mean, you know,
you're thirteen days away from the deadline. You know, teams
can change in a lot here in two weeks, but
I will I will stick by that.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
You know.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
Obviously it's been a quiet week trades with the NFL
this week, but as we inched closer, we'll see how
that goes. November fourth, that Tuesday there, so that's right
before you go to.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Germany, That's right. We did get some injury updates today
for the Indianapolis Colts. The twenty one day practice window
for Jalen Jones has officially been opened. So starting there, Kevin,
I believe Shan Sichin was asked today about just the
ramp up period for Daniel Jones, and he almost hinted
at the fact that he may be ready to go
and in case they needed to play every snap on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Yeah, and you know, the one thing about the old
injury window is you know, I think what you could do.
I mean, you can ramp him up pretty aggressively off
to the side, you know, on injured reserve. Yeah, I
mean you can get going and get going and get going,
get as close as you can. And then obviously you
know practice matters, and you know, yes there is a
step up. But you know, with the ability to have
a guy on injured reserve, you can kind of cheat
(04:33):
the twenty one day window, I guess is what I'm saying.
You don't need the full amount of those twenty one days. Now,
we should note with Jones soft tissue and multiple months
and that's plural. You know, remember he's aggravated this injury
already once, so I would think that you would want
to be extra cautious. But yeah, I think that's a
fair vibe. Now, I mean, there is part of me
(04:55):
that looks at this opponent on Sunday and thinks, how
much do you want to rush it?
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Now?
Speaker 1 (05:00):
You can look at two ways. Hey, what a great
opportunity for him to get fourth quarter reps. Or you
could sit here and say, well, let's look at Pittsburgh.
Let's look at Atlanta. Okay, DK Metcalf here, Okay, Drake
London there? You know those with Traveraio's hoards still out
of course, because we know war will be out for
those games. Are you a little patient there? We'll get
more to this when we get to the Titans. But
(05:23):
I did kind of have to laugh today. I forget
which Colts players said this, but it says something to
the effect of it would mean the world to them
to knock us off. They're not wrong, I think in
that statement. Yeah, But like, I don't know if I've
ever heard an NFL player say that. I mean, like
you usually this league is defined with parody, Like that's
(05:46):
a comment that you know, the Alabama football player says
about McNeese State coming to play them for homecoming, or
you know, the Georgia football player says that about Samford
coming to play them. So I just I had to
laugh at that. Again, you are a fourteen point favorite.
We'll get more into this here upcoming. But yeah, I
(06:06):
think obviously great news on Jalen Jones. I've you know,
always been pretty high. I think on Jalen I would
like to see him get an outside look as a
starting corner whenever he's healthy.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
Yeah, it'll be fascinating to see what lou Anarimo does
with him, just because from the jump it just seemed
like he wasn't in rum guy, like, yes they draft
h Why am I forgetting his name there?
Speaker 1 (06:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Justin Wallace, thank you, justin Wally, and Wally was automatically
pretty what it looked like to be ahead of Jalen's Jones. Besides,
despite the fact that Jones has already played on Sundays
and you've seen success from him against NFL players and
you haven't played well. Yeah right, I mean that too.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
And again I have said before, I don't think he's
just played well for a seventh round pick. I think
he's been a nice corner. And also I throw one
more two in there, Eddie. I felt like they then
skipped him over for Xavier and Howard was getting ready
to go to that year you know, and that, honestly,
that one kind of bothered me just because I really
felt like Jalen has kind of earned to be up
next on the old Depth Jar, But you know, handle
(07:01):
everything beautifully today and just speaking to the media, and
I'll be curious to see how he impacts and obviously
how quickly he impacts.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Other injury updates today on Wednesday from Shane Seiken. Samson
ebucom is dealing with a knee injury. He is week
to week. Taekwon lewis injured is growing against the Chargers
in their win on Sunday. He is listed currently as
day to day. Wide receiver Josh Downs, who is in
the NFL's concussion protocol, was at practice today, but he
(07:31):
was in that red non contact Jersey. Fellow wide out
Ashton Dowlan dealing with a chest injury practice today as well.
We don't know the full status if those are limited
participants or full participants. Jalen Jones was back on the
practice field. Kenny Moore and Braiden Smith did not practice today,
but on the Braden Smith front of it, Kevin we
(07:53):
probably fully anticipated that was just like a injury management
or a rest day for Braden.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
Yeah. Again, sometimes you get the injury report us we
record this pod, so maybe we can update that a
little bit later. You know, Kenny, we saw him rest
on Friday and he actually played more than I thought
he would. He played sixty snaps, a pretty big number
given the fact that he missed so much time. So
he was out present at practice, not practicing, but was present.
So we'll await kind official word on Hayes now in
(08:18):
the Wednesday rest crew. You know, the Colts have opted
for you know, this week was I think the first
time Styching has given them Monday off. So maybe we're
kind of approaching the old you know, walkthrough on Wednesdays.
You know, could that be on the horizon for them.
Maybe it's a post by week thing. But yeah, let's
kind of group the injuries together, white out good news,
Josh downs red Jersey but still good. Ashton Doolan back,
(08:41):
so you know, healthy pass catching group. You know, what
does that mean for Adie Mitchell? For those that care,
you know, that's probably something to keep an eye on.
Defensive end, that's where you you know added you know,
Seth Coleman to the practice squad yesterday. He was a
local pro day guy from Illinois. They did work out
Shaquill Barrett. We shoul probably note that.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
Oh yeah, good call.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Certainly a Super Bowl champion, right, And I think he
led the league in sacks I thought in twenty nineteen.
I'm pretty sure on that. And you know, two time
Pro bowler now, you know, was one of these retiree
unretire retiree unretire, you know, a couple of times last offseason.
So it really hasn't played football in about two years,
meaningful football. So the Colts have injuries right now on
(09:26):
the defensive line. Ebicom had a brace on that right
knee today, So you know, I think the assumption there
is when you hear week to week probably means multiple games.
Taekwon Lewis day today, so maybe it's just one week
for him. We'll see. He didn't practice today, but you
know what that means j T Twoamala at the time. Yeah,
just a huge, huge opportunity coming up. You know, you
(09:47):
would think he's the third end behind lat too, behind
pay Obviously, we'll see about Taekwon the rest of the week.
We'll see if they bring up Durrel and Jommy off
the practice squad as kind of that extra defensive end.
You know, this probably is a game I'm trying to
think back to Week three. I believe it was a
game where they dressed more dtackles than I think ends.
I would assume that would be the case. Again, like Tennessee,
(10:10):
and we can get to Tennessee's injury report because it's
it's lengthy, right, Yeah, I've got some stuff. Yeah, and
it's notable. But one thing to note, you know, before
we transition is if there is one area, you know,
is this the trap game? It is. If there's one
area that they're different than from week three, positively could
be their run game. Really, the fact that Tajy Spears
(10:31):
is now back, yeah, him and Pollard and Pollard doesn't
sound like he practiced today, but you know, Pollard and
him is kind of a one two punch. They're O
line I think is bad in general, But they also
were dealing with backups in there in week three. Maybe
they're a little healthy. I think Jase Latham and we'll
see about Kevin Zeitler for for Sunday. Those are the
two that missed that Week three matchups. So again, is
(10:53):
this more of a detackle game for you? There but
I think that's everything on the injury or front for
the Colts. Unless there's something that we see here that's
you know, a bit alarming. Outside of that, we can
probably transition. I you know, I wrote something on the
website of just you know, Shane Sich and Daniel Jones,
(11:16):
these are just yeah, these are two quarterback nerds, or
I should say football nerds, not even quarterback nerds.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
We talked about it on Monday's pod.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
Yeah, and just they're just obsessive and you look at
the numbers right now, and you know, talking to Shane
today a little bit more about it, something that I
think stands out to him and also stands out to me,
is just the overall balance. Like you know, when you're
on a heater like this, Okay, when do you get humbled?
The NFL always humbles you. When do you get humbled?
(11:43):
Or how could you get humbled? It's probably the better
way to put it. But right now, if I was like, oh,
you know what if Jonathan Taylor comes back to Earth, well,
I mean, good luck defending the Colts past. Yeah, what
if Daniel Jones comes back to Earth, well, good luck
defending the run game? It's not one guy, there's great
balance to the group. I mean, what's the biggest catch
game many players had? Has any player had eight catches
(12:04):
this year? Nine catches this year?
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Pipin's probably at a game. Do Pipman just have a
seven catch game? You know?
Speaker 1 (12:08):
I feel like everybody is like in the four to
seven range every game, And even Taylor hasn't had the
massive yardage game. He's had the big touchdown games, of course,
but you're yeah, I'm almost still waiting for Taylor to
have the one eighty or I.
Speaker 2 (12:23):
Mean he had the one sixty five against Denver.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
Right, I guess he did is that when he ripped
off the one and we broke that tackle on the backfield?
Speaker 2 (12:30):
Yeah, and uh went down sixty eight yard touchdown run.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
Yeah, I'm thinking when the safety caught him.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
Oh yeah, yeah there were two of them he had. Yeah,
that might that was a sixty eight yarder, that's right, Yeah,
because he didn't score that game.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
So it just like on the ground and basically I
sail this to be like, I almost think there's another
gear for the offense, as crazy as that sounds, for
them to uh to get to. So I know we'll
get to the defensive side of the ball in a
good amount of Twitter questions, but that's up on the website.
One of seven five the.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
Fan Pittman had seven catches week last week against the Chargers,
and I think that's the most.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
Warren probably had a seven catch game or a six
catch game.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
Warren had a Yeah, he had a seven catch game
week one, So that ties those two. Yep.
Speaker 1 (13:15):
Yeah, but you haven't even had you know, the whatever,
the nine for whatever type of game. You know, if
some of these obviously look at the Chargers last week,
or you know, look at Pooka of course a couple
of weeks back. You know, it's not just these individuals
that are just seemingly, you know whatever, getting hot for
a for a month.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
Or injury updates for the Tennessee Titans. This is from
Tran Davenport covers them for espn UH. This is from
interim head coach Mike McCoy. It sounds like Lajerius Sneed
is going to miss some time, Jeffrey Simmons is week
to week and then in terms of practice availability. This
(13:54):
is also from Tehran. He did not see Tony Poler,
Kevin Zeitler, Calvin Ridley who miss lat week skame with
a hamstring injury. He exited the game two weeks ago
early in the first quarter with that injury. Or Bryce
Oliver Blake Hants former Colt jahad Ward arden Key was
working off to the side. He's one of their defensive linemen.
And then that's about it.
Speaker 1 (14:16):
Some notable names, Yeah, very notable names on that list there.
So Jeffrey Simmons is by far their best defensive player.
And yeah, that sounds like he's going to be playing
this week. Is this the Joe Bachi Bowl? Are we
getting Joe Bachi on the JumboTron and their Bachi tribute video.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
And the uh Tofandre sweat his back so they have him,
so it's not like a Sebastian Joseph Dang.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
Another former colt, right is he? I have no idea
or no who.
Speaker 2 (14:42):
Am I thinking of? That went to Notre Dame. That
was a lineman that they signed for a one new deal,
Isaac Rochelle. Not Rochelle is another one of those Sheldon Day, Yes,
that's who I was thinking of.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
Thank you, I know you would remember as soon as
I mentioned Notre Dame. Yeah, shout out to Warren Central. Yeah,
Joe Bachi on their practice squad down there in Tennessee. Okay,
let's just start big picture. You are a massive favorite. Well,
is he allowed to play because the Cults put him
on injured reserve. I believe they had an injury settlement.
I think they waived him a couple of weeks back
(15:14):
from ir if I'm not mistaken there.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
I don't know how that worked.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
Sometimes you do see that there you get whatever, a
little third party in there to deem the injury and
go from there. Fourteen point favorite, you know, it's it's massive.
You look back to I think it's the second biggest
in the NFL the season. You go back to two
thousand and the Cults are ten to one in such games.
Eddie Garrison, do you remember the one game that they
(15:39):
did not win as a fourteen point favorite or more?
I do not should I here's my hint. A player
that made a tackle for the Colts last week, scored
a touchdown for the other team in said game, scored
(16:00):
a touchdown in the game, scored a touchdown against the
Colts the first touchdown of the game to help spark
the upset.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
And this player recorded a tackle for the Colts. Wreck
is this player he has to be. Is he a
defensive player? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (16:20):
Great hair, he is not a defensive player.
Speaker 2 (16:24):
Great veteran. Yeah, I don't know. Hit me.
Speaker 1 (16:29):
Laqwan treadwell with the Jacksonville Jaguars season finale twenty twenty
one winning get in fifteen point favorite. I think the
colt tore and lost that game. I looked at that
box score the other day. Man, they were getting drubbed.
They had to like backdoor their way to like a
twenty six to twelve or eleven final there. So, yeah,
(16:52):
that's probably the most people want to hear us talk
about that game. But nonetheless, when they've been this bigger favorite,
they've usually taken care of business. And really, I mean,
there's no way around it. It's no matter how you
look at it. This is the first versus the worst
on Sunday. The Colts, I believe, are a plus ninety
two in the NFL right now. It's the biggest point
differential of any team in the league. And the Titans
(17:13):
are the worst. They are a minus I think it's
ninety six. So these teams have played seven games this
season and what one hundred and eighty eight points. There's
the difference between the two, so it's been quite their discrepancy.
The Titans are lasting yards per game, turnovers committed, third down,
time of possession, points per game. I mean, obviously the
(17:36):
Colts are first, and a slew of things. I just yeah,
I mean, I guess you I didn't believe we three
as a trap game at all. I guess you could
call this maybe more of a trap game, just based
off the schedule, you know, and that you know falls
a little bit more in the middle of the schedule
or yeah, middle of the season. But I would be
stunned if the Colts losses game.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
Yeah, you are correct, plus ninety two, best in the league.
Indianapolis Colts worst in the league Tennessee minus ninety six,
which is coincidentally the number of points they've scored all season.
Speaker 1 (18:08):
Look at that, Well, that's easier for than remember, you know,
I think back to Week three, Eddie. You know, some
wild decisions from Brian Callahan, if you remember, like with
kicking field goals and not kicking field goals. Yeah, it
was just fascinating and obviously horrific for a Titans fan,
unbelievable for a Colts fan watching that unfold. You know,
(18:29):
the Colts got on them early a bit. Daniel Jones
had one of his highlight plays of this season, I
think under siege on a third down. They blitzed him
right at the middle there. Who do need out of that?
Scrambles extends a drive? You know, at that point the
Colts had I don't think they had punted all year,
and you know you're able to punch that in for
seventeen to three. You also, you know, point to a
(18:51):
little bit more of a you know, later in the game.
I think of the Jonathan Taylor run, you know, on
the full back lead player, the io power from Tyler Warren,
and you know what Taylor did once he got to
the second level there. You know, I thought, for the
most part, I thought Tennessee actually got a stretch there
(19:11):
kind of the middle of the game where kim Board
actually moved the football pretty well. They just didn't really
finish off drives, which I think is something that recent
opponents of the Colts have probably said of like, hey,
we're moving it well, but you know, we just don't
finish it off. So those are kind of my memories.
I mean, you know, Xavier and Howard played in that game.
I mean, you got to go back, you know, personnel
stuff and change. Obviously, the Kennymore pick six to start
(19:33):
the game. I probably should have mentioned there early on there.
So those are probably some of my memories. Anything stand
out to you, Eddie thinking back to week week three.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
Yeah, the Jonathan Taylor hat trick game, Yeah, you're pretty
much on everything else.
Speaker 1 (19:49):
Was that one touchdown running on the goal line. I
thought it was a great touchdown on as well, just
his ability to kind of power through there and get
into the end zone. So, I you know, for the
most part, I think that cover pretty much everything. Mike
McCoy is their interim head coach. He did hire I
think he hired shansdike in back in it was fourteen
(20:09):
fifteen something around there. After Shane spent a year with
the Cleveland Brown So that's pretty much it. Drake May
sliced and diced him big time last week ninety percent
twenty one of twenty three.
Speaker 2 (20:20):
That dude's legit man.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
For Drake May. Yes, indeed, I would. I would agree
on that. So, unless you've got anything else to add,
I'm ready to hop into Twitter questions.
Speaker 2 (20:30):
I have one thing, Can Jonathan Taylor do it? For
a third consecutive game against Tennessee in the end zone
three times.
Speaker 1 (20:39):
So we did that? Was it after the That was
after the goal line game, right after the Denver game
last year on the goal.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
Lines Tennessee on the December twenty second. I'd have to
go back.
Speaker 1 (20:50):
Was he two hundred in that game?
Speaker 2 (20:51):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (20:51):
Mean he had a huge game. I remember the week
after that, so I didn't realize the have three touchdowns. Yeah,
I knew he had a big yardish yardish game.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
Yep to eighteen three.
Speaker 1 (21:02):
I just keep on burping. Really those burpie pretzels, no
nothing I know of. They're great. Thank you for that,
No problem.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
Let's get into the twitter questions now, starting with Joe
and tw Listen to Monday's pod. Are we being a
bit too hard or harsh on the defense and the
pass rush? I get the Chargers' injury situation and the
high draft pick capital in the Colts defensive line. Of
course you want more. That said, we're not factoring in
(21:33):
score effects. Cults are up big early, pretty much rushed
for most of the game, dropping seven into coverage and
clearly not defending the sticks and trying to avoid the
big play. Good example, the last Charger Driver where they
turned the ball over on downs. Colts were ahead by
fourteen points. It took like ninety minutes of game clock.
(21:53):
The better judge will be in a close game in
the fourth quarter when lou Anriumo sends exotic pressures to
defend first down. We haven't seen much of that at
all this year. Let me know your thoughts.
Speaker 1 (22:09):
Yeah, I don't think I'm being too hardh She was
interesting listening to Louyan Room on Tuesday, Eddie. He was
asked about his past rush and I think he's down
played whatever the questions about it Shane Stikeen, which you know,
for the most part, Shane typically downplays things publicly. He
also has gone that, but you know, he mentioned, you
(22:31):
know right now, I think we're seventh in the league
in sacks, and I think that's very misconstrued, frankly, because
to me, the true kind of sack number is sacks
per pass attempt. You know, if you're playing a college
football schedule with Navy, Army and Air Force the first
three games of the season, you're probably not gonna be
very high in sacks. But if each of those teams
(22:53):
throw the ball five times against you, and you sack
them once out of five. That sack percentage of pretty good.
The sacks per passive net is pretty good. And right
now the cults are nineteenth and so you know, my
issue right now is just how quick the pressure is
getting there. To me, I think a lot of it
is slow developing. I think a lot of it is
(23:14):
stunt related. I think a lot of it is just
effort plays. And you know, to the questions point, you know,
when I hear score effect, I mean, I guess the
Chargers game you could point to that. Now, granted you
didn't have your first sack on Herbert until the fourth quarter,
so you know, when it was still kind of a
close game, and you know, even it was more of
a back and forth, you didn't have it. And I
(23:36):
don't know how that explains the Arizona game. Arizona was
back and forth as it could come, and huge drives
in the fourth quarter and again once you know, you
got the Jacobi at the end of that drive, but
that was at the end of it. And to me,
those are kind of the effort sacks. I know. Rick
von Terry said on Monday night on the radio show
of you Know he labels sacks as kind of first wave,
(23:58):
and I think he's counted two in the last few
games here. So I am critical in the past rush,
but I think there's merit behind it. And I also
think the investments play unto that You've invested in that
group not to be average or below average. You've invested
(24:18):
in that group to be elite, and it definitely is
not that there. So you know right now you've allowed
a ton. I think it's three thirty five I believe,
or you're passing yards per game over last month. I
think it's the second worst four game stretch of any
team in the league this year. So to me, that's bad.
It's one of the worst in franchise history. And uh
with Buckterton doubled two, I think that's the other part
(24:39):
that is just bothersome. Like the Chargers wide out's got
the best of a depleted Colts dB room, but you
can't say the same about like upfront, and trust me,
if you think like the Colts they thought they would
absolutely undress the Chargers pass rush wise, Like if you
think my comments are whatever unfair, part of me also
(25:00):
relaying what I've heard internally, like they thought they would
absolutely dominate that aspect of the game, and I didn't
feel that at all there. So, when Herbert's owned for
a career high in passing yards and he's played whatever
ninety some games, and Jacoby's having one of his, you know,
biggest yardage days of his career, and Jacoby's probably started
what forty to fifty games north of that, maybe that
(25:23):
to me is an area that needs to improve.
Speaker 2 (25:26):
Shake States. I know a lot of people are hating
Shane stiking for the end of the first half situation
against the Chargers, but to me, it looks like he's
learned from last year. You're at control, no need for
a potential Houston into a first half ending.
Speaker 1 (25:41):
Yeah, this was definitely a popular topic that I got,
you know, during the game, after the game. You know,
obviously Jake's question here speaks to it, and you know,
I I I probably it's probably one of my favorite
parts of football, honestly, is just kind of when you
get in these big time situational periods, Yeah, you know,
how do you handle it? And I've learned a lot
watching Shane, listening to Shane describe these moments on what
(26:04):
he likes to do, how he attacks them. This to
me is a little different than Denver. Whereas you know Denver,
I thought that definitely they got uber uber conservative. You
know here you're up twenty to three, and I think
Shane is generally first half or second half.
Speaker 2 (26:21):
He is.
Speaker 1 (26:23):
First off, he's anal about every little detail, look at
the sneaker sneak of the time out. But he is
anal about giving the team, giving the opponent the ball back.
He's going to try to go to the nth degree
not to do that, and he was adamant of that situation.
I don't want the Chargers to double dip. I don't
want them to kick the field goal twenty to six
(26:45):
score in the first touchdown of the second of the
third quarter like they did. And now it's twenty thirteen.
It's coming on and the duo obviously made the big
play there. That's why the Nick Cross interception is so
big when you look back on it. I mean, that
was such a huge play by Cross there. But I
I'm trying to separate, like I wasn't surprised by how
(27:05):
Shane handled it.
Speaker 2 (27:06):
I was only a frustrated with how the drive started,
like just the lack of urgency a little bit.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
Yeah, I could hear a little bit more on like.
Speaker 2 (27:13):
The and the willingness to be content with taking three
instead of trying to. Yeah. I think the.
Speaker 1 (27:20):
Fine line of it is though, I think once you
get into field goal range, I kind of like the
pedal to the medal, like once you have secured the score,
you flip the field. Then I'm kind of like, go,
go go. I understand, And you know teams face this
every week. You get into the weird third down right
around the two minute morning do you throw? Do you
(27:40):
not throw? How many timeouts does the opponent have? And
that's where he got uber conservative, if I'm remembering correctly,
that's where he drained a.
Speaker 2 (27:48):
Ton of clock. Yeah, and yeah, he really started to
drain the clock. Like I thought there'd be go go go.
After the first down they got that first first down,
that's typically when you see teams go like, okay, let's go.
They run it on first down and see what they
can get. They may be running again on second down
and see what the other team does they call in
time out or are they not? As soon as they
get that first down, there like all right, we're gonna
(28:08):
go two minutes full quick huddle, no huddle, whatever, and
keep going. And I had friends texting me about it,
and they were like, why didn't they spike the ball
with six seconds left? Six seven seconds left? After that
that play, I was like, why would you? I mean,
you're in field goal range. There's no need to spike
the ball and take a shot at the end zone
because there's so many things that can go wrong. You
can get sacked, you can fumble the ball and getting sacked,
(28:30):
you can throw a pick, you lose track of time,
and next thing you know, you use up all six seconds.
So I didn't I didn't mind the way that it
ended with.
Speaker 1 (28:39):
And how they managed to clock.
Speaker 2 (28:40):
I just had a problem with how it started.
Speaker 1 (28:42):
Shout out to Ryan Bowen. I'm at La Fitness off
of the Michigan Road right now. Land Stevenson in here
lifting weights by himself.
Speaker 2 (28:50):
Who's Ryan Bowen? By the way, Okay, how great is that?
You should be like, go up there and do the
guitar strut? Yeah, I mean we're asking him. He's about
to go hoop after this?
Speaker 1 (28:59):
Thanks Ryan, Yeah, I get it. Get a selfie with
a man. That man could be the backup point guard
for the Pacers. Kidding, I'd be curious if the score
is a little tighter, you know, how would you have
handled it? But again I want to separate, like I
wasn't overly surprised, but I also didn't think it was
the biggest deal in the world, like twenty to three.
As long as you avoid and I get it, you know,
(29:20):
I mean Herbert is. I'm glad Brian listen to Brian
brought that play up on Monday. That play by Ziah Franklin,
you know, was so huge, So I understand it. I
don't in the Shane weird clock management handlings of his career,
the Denver one is like almost egregious. This one I
(29:40):
don't really think comes close to that category.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
In Houston last year's UF yeah backed up.
Speaker 1 (29:47):
Yeah again, Richardson versus Jones, I think are two different situations. Yeah,
that was just kind of an edd and you know,
I think there's probably some quarterback fault there. But to me,
Denver this year was particularly.
Speaker 2 (29:59):
Lucky guy who could be playing on Sunday that we
have name dropped a couple of times.
Speaker 1 (30:05):
J C.
Speaker 2 (30:06):
Timolau. This is Josh and Drew's question. Have you gotten
any reasoning as to why he's not playing? I feel
like with the pass rushers banged up and playing bad
tackles against the Chargers, he would have had a shot.
So we've gone We've gone over.
Speaker 1 (30:28):
Them one more time. Basically, the Colts have opted for
They've looked at him as their fifth defensive end, and
when they decide who dresses week to week, the thought is,
if we need more defensive tackles, then that means we
dressed four defensive ends. So if we're playing the run teams,
we're gonna dress more defensive tackles. I believe Eric Johnson
is kind of the Eric Johnson The second is the
(30:49):
extra g tackle a draft, and then when they don't
when they're playing the pass teams, they dressed to amal Alau,
I think it's been kind of split through the first
seven games or so. He did play twenty two who
I think was the number twenty two snaps on Sunday
now again epiccommon Lewis got hurt in the game, so
I think that contributed. But you know, as a third
defensive end, I mean, hell, if he's that, that's gonna
(31:12):
be about thirty snaps coming up on Sunday for him.
So that could be a nice little role for him here.
And you know, again I want to make sure that
we go over this because I know, you know, so
many people want these massive swings for the fences when
it comes to trade deadline, and a lot of that
is just unrealistic. And he go back to the cold
Super Bowl team. Mm hmm. One of the biggest reasons
(31:33):
why that team sung a different tune from a defensive
standpoint in the second half of the season was because
of a trade Traders for.
Speaker 2 (31:42):
Booker buck Farlane.
Speaker 1 (31:43):
I mean, Booger is a good player at that Can
we bring the Booger mobile back? Is there anything better
than that?
Speaker 2 (31:51):
No, there wasn't.
Speaker 1 (31:52):
Gosh, I was an electric I just love that thing.
You know, he was a nice player at that point
in his career. But this is not some all pro
they were getting. You know, he was a starter in
tam But but again, this was not a you know,
all of a sudden he is just playing, you know,
at an all pro you know, Max Crosby, Miles Garrett. However,
you want to label some of these guys here, so
(32:12):
like that type of infusion is that out there? Can
you do that? That? To me is I think a
realistic exploration for the franchise.
Speaker 2 (32:21):
By the way, did you see the Jordan Schultz report
from earlier today, I did not know this is about
eleven am Eastern Cold to have the NFL's best record,
are viewed around the league as a team to monitor
around the trade deadline, with their focus on adding a
proven defensive playmaker.
Speaker 1 (32:38):
Yeah. I think I said this on Monday, but I
will reiterate it again. I think the Colts are heavily
looking into things I do, and I think part of
it is because you're in a different position. Yeah, I mean,
I mean this is different than five and two and
twenty nineteen.
Speaker 2 (32:54):
As I say, as a just stated, you have the
best record in the NFL, and right now you I mean,
with your schedule, there's a legitimate shot where you can
get a buy in the first round, and next you're
hosting maybe one, maybe two playoff games.
Speaker 1 (33:05):
And you go back to twenty nineteen, Eddie, when you're
five and two, so many one possession wins. Yeah, invent
Arry's leg was already to fall off, and then Jacobe
gets hurt in Pittsburgh and the bottom kind of falls out.
That was a been a fools goal. Like, I don't
boy right now, I'd be stunned to see it just
fall apart like that. But again, the schedule inevitably is
a little tougher. I think I pointed that out, you
(33:26):
know right now. I think if you look the rest
of the way, I'm pretty sure every opponent is either
in the playoffs or within a game of the playoffs
outside of like Houston and of course Tennessee on Sunday.
But yes, I would be looking into that. And again,
I do think there is a lot of real.
Speaker 2 (33:43):
Interesting Connory would like to know how much of this
year's success could possibly be contributed to the stability and
the owner's box. As much as I love Jim Mersay,
there were more than a few occasions where things got dicey.
Now I'm wondering how much he had his hand in
decisions Chris Paller made. I don't mean to speak ill
(34:05):
of the dead, so please don't take it that way.
Speaker 1 (34:09):
Yeah, I understand the question. I don't know it seems
a tad overblown, if I must be honest here, I mean,
did her say insert himself into some decisions? Sure? Was he,
you know, calling for certain guys to be playing and
calling for certain dudes to be drafted in the third round?
Speaker 2 (34:29):
Or No, I mean, like, I don't think he went
to that level like his father. No.
Speaker 1 (34:33):
I think that is very much overblown. I mean, you know,
he sadly passed. And what was that May? I'm trying
to think what it was. It was definitely when the
cults are back in the building. I think it was May.
I mean, you know, how much can you really get done?
I don't. I guess you know, am I undermining Carli
orse Gordon at this point? I think Carly has been
(34:54):
largely running the show outside of the biggest decisions in
the franchise for the last like handful of year or
if not more. Yeah, I mean Carly has been Carly
on the sidelines is not new. Carly attending practice is
not new. I mean that's been happening for several years now.
I mean she's been doing the day to day thing
for a while. Jim, irsay, has been away from the
franchise outside of Sundays and whatever important owners meetings for
(35:18):
a long long time. Here, you know, Jim's signing off
on some of the big stuff is probably what has
been the only thing. I mean, you could you could
probably I could listen to an argument of you know,
Jim Mersey's health probably had something to do with Chris
Boud continuing to be the GM. You know, could you
have run a functional GM search, you know when Jim
did the search for all right, when Shane Sachen was hired.
(35:42):
I think I was largely Chris's operation, you know, handling
that if you're running the GM search, that obviously involves
a lot more from an ownership standpoint. So I don't
you know, I don't think this is necessarily something that's
at play here now as far as Jim Mersey is passing.
You know, we were chatting Franklin and I wanted to
hang around a little bit longer in the locker room
(36:03):
today because I thought he said some of those interesting
because I've heard this a couple of times, like hey,
we're uh, we're we're more close knit, or or you know,
we are close knit, you know, like however you describe it.
And I'm thinking to myself, man, you just hear that
so often, and it's like, well, how or why or
like when did you feel that? Because I mentioned he
had kind of felt that, you know, when everybody came
(36:25):
back in OTAs, and then you know, he was mentioning
to me like hey, you know, weirdly, like I think
all of us going to Jim Mercy's funeral together was
like a bit of a hey, we're all together, you know.
He mentioned us coming back at training camp. He just
you know, maybe not as much tangible things you can
point to, but just a feeling that there was a
(36:46):
more of a natural connectedness to this year's team that
is more different than maybe previous years. And you know,
for the most part, a lot of the faces are
the same now. He did point to, like Cam Biden's
positive energy has been awesome. Yeah, for the defense, I'm
sure there's he didn't say this, but I'm sure the
Daniel Jones steadiness is probably, if nothing else, is much
(37:06):
different for the offense to handle, and I think, you know,
it would be in a positive element as well, and
like new guys are just ready to lead, you know,
I know, to force. I was listening to J. J.
Watt and Pat macpharlier today and he mentioned that Buckner
had shared in their production meetings that like, you know,
when when the d line or the defense when they
(37:26):
do their Thursday night dinners, like it's one hundred percent
attendance now and it wasn't always that way, It's like, okay,
like think about the d line. It's pretty much the same, dudes,
is it not?
Speaker 2 (37:36):
So? Like?
Speaker 1 (37:36):
Why?
Speaker 2 (37:36):
You know why?
Speaker 1 (37:37):
It was it just enough enough?
Speaker 2 (37:39):
All right?
Speaker 1 (37:39):
I'm tired of losing. I'm tired of this being you
know how it's our January goes maybe, you know, because
we're all I think inevitably everybody wants, you know, where
is the smoking gun? Where was that one thing that
just all of a sudden epiphany hit. Yeah, and I
think it's difficult, but they are shed a little bit
of light on that.
Speaker 2 (37:58):
Two questions left kit. If Daniel Jones works out and
continues to play well and continue winning games, does that
validate or vindicate the Chris ballad strategy of getting second
chance quarterbacks year after year? Does that put a different
lens on all of the quarterback signings instead of drafting
(38:20):
guys the last few years. It's also I runized that
he finally drafts one at the top of the draft
and we finally get the second chance guy.
Speaker 1 (38:31):
Yeah, I vindicates a strong word. I don't you know,
I don't know if I would go down that path.
I yeah, you know, how much does all of a
sudden just one year you know, sweep away everything or
wipe away all of the decisions. I mean, I think
(38:54):
you can go back to you know, this is not
me just laying hidsight twenty twenty. I was pretty adamant
right after Luck retired, like you need to go into
that next draft and draft somebody, and draft somebody high
and not draft whatever. Jacob Eason, you know, like wait
that long because I just think, again, that's the most
(39:16):
ideal way to try and build. I'm not saying that
it's the only way to build, but I think it's
the best chance to create that window, which we've talked
about endlessly. So yeah, I don't I don't think because
you found Daniel Jones on the fifth trive of a
band aid quarterback or you know whatever, bring him in
here and try to resurrect a career, have everyoneted to
(39:39):
find it. I don't think that that necessarily means that, like,
you know, you were right the whole time, or that
was the pathway that needed to be to be explored.
But certainly from an organizational standpoint, you know, wherever the
credit belongs, whether it's Ballad, whether it's psyching, whether it's both,
whether it's somebody else. The change in defensive philosophy will
(40:03):
by no means perfect. I think it's been better was needed.
The change in free agency philosophy certainly, and the decision
on Jones, you know, as believing of that pool of quarterbacks,
which you know, that pool of quarterbacks I don't think
was maybe as debated as much as like, you know,
the year you had Winston Mariota. You know, Matt Ryan
(40:27):
was the domino that eventually fell with a Deshaun Watson thing.
You know, I'm trying to think of who the quarterbacks were,
Darnold Jones. I guess James, there weren't that many pool
of qbs on the move this offseason. You know, Rogers,
I guess you should be thrown out there credit that
you know, of those guys that they believed in Jones,
and they obviously, you know, maybe they had a situation
(40:48):
that was attractive to Daniel Jones because I think Minnesota
offered more. If I'm not mistaken, they would have to
go back in double checked out. I think Daniel Jones
like the opportunity here and said, hey, j McCarthy has
not played a game in the NFL at least is
going to be long Anthony Richardson has played games in
the NFL at least is going to be shorter. And
I think Shane has a reputation no strong one around
(41:11):
the league, and I think that very very helpful as well.
Speaker 2 (41:15):
Tell you what Turp is our final Twitter questions. Turp
lives in a city that I love dearly. Outside of
Indianapolis and outside of Cincinnati. I'm on the West coast,
being a coltsman in Seattle area. I get the chance
to see the Colts maybe once every four years, usually eight,
and I am looking at getting a visitors sidelined field
(41:39):
tickets for the Colts game against the Seahawks. Well, Turp
sounds good. Invite me, Why don't you? However, Turp states,
I've never been to a sporting event in person where
the team I was rooting for one my high school
was zero in thirty when Turp attended, lost all four
(42:00):
of the Sonics games. Never seen the Mariners win in person,
including both games they lost at home during the playoffs
this postseason against the Blue Jays and the one time
bought tickets to fly to Indy for the Colts. Andrew
Luck retires a week later and the Colts lose to
(42:21):
the Dolphins. Turp would like to know if just stay
home or risk going to another game.
Speaker 1 (42:28):
Unbelievable. Do you believe in sports, Jinxes?
Speaker 2 (42:32):
I have to at this rate.
Speaker 1 (42:34):
Well after listening to that, Yeah, so you think no
chance he can go?
Speaker 2 (42:39):
Uh? I don't know, Like you've got the chance to
see the Colts. And it's not like they're playing you know,
the Jets or some other low, lowly ranked team Tennessee
or anybody who's bad.
Speaker 1 (42:54):
Seattle's good. So if they lose to Seattle, it's Seattle's good.
And also I think that's one of my favorite environments
of the tire and fell really so yeah, I I
I you gotta go, You gotta go. And the Colts
need to get him in the locker room. They need
to end this curse. I don't believe in sports, Jinxes.
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (43:17):
It's up to you. I think it depends on the person. Yeah,
I'm just not I believe this. I think you're not superstitious. No,
I'm not. I am.
Speaker 1 (43:27):
Hey, I I think believing in you know, I think
the Colts he when the team bus parks, they should
hand him the Earth guitar and they should go in
there I wonder who we'll get it this week? Was
it was go Over last week? Right? I believe it
was happy thirty second birthday to you.
Speaker 2 (43:46):
Gotta go, go, Go, Go, go go. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (43:50):
I think seeing your team in a in a NFC
city or just like a non Indianapolis. I seen him
in a road games, right, the easiest way to put
it is awesome. And to see them, you know, out
of place to your point where you only see him
once every eight years. I remember that Sunday night game
last time they were there. Jacobe Brissette under center. I
think Colt started Dayshawn Bond Warren central product at center.
(44:11):
Kind of a kind of a close game if I
remember correctly lost.
Speaker 2 (44:15):
Yeah, you gotta go, you gotta go. As you formulate
your prediction.
Speaker 1 (44:19):
Where they say when they flip the coin in Friday
night lights, what does what does our coach say?
Speaker 2 (44:24):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (44:25):
He looks over to Winchell says something about Jinx's.
Speaker 2 (44:28):
Yeah, I can't remember.
Speaker 1 (44:31):
Gosh, picture that right now?
Speaker 2 (44:32):
Maybe if you look it up as I read off
the injury report and figure out your prediction for Sunday's game.
Wide receiver Josh Jowns concussion limited. Ashton dule in full
participant with that chest injury. Here are the list of
players that did not participate today. Samson Ebicon with that
knee injury fully anticipated, Taekwon Lewis with a growing injury
fully anticipated. Kenny Moore achilles is the injury of designation,
(44:54):
the same one that cost in them miss three weeks,
did not participate. Braden Smith was a rest day. Tyler
Goodson back to practice dealing with a groin injury, full participant.
Jinglin Jones with that hamstring injury was listed as a
limited participant. Were you able to look up what they
say and Friday night lights on the coin flip or
(45:15):
and or figure out what you're going with in terms
of your prediction for Colts and Titans?
Speaker 1 (45:24):
Did you catch that?
Speaker 2 (45:26):
I can't always just edit this.
Speaker 1 (45:31):
As I'm trying to pull my YouTube up and put
that in front of my microphone here. Ain't no curses,
That's what he said there. Two The legend that is Bunchell.
It's gonna be around thirty one six, thirty one six,
eh thirty one six. You don't give them a pity touchdown,
well then maybe they'll make it. And Joys is an
extra point, you know. So yeah, I again, you can
(45:57):
point to a little I don't know. We'll see what
Tennessee's enter at Portland, like with Tony Poller not practicing today,
But you know, maybe the run game gets going a
little bit and came Board makes some plays in the backyard.
But I'd be thoroughly stunned and disappointed, honestly if it
wasn't looking like that. I think you'll get Riley Leonard's
first NFL.
Speaker 2 (46:12):
Action really not Brett Rippion.
Speaker 1 (46:17):
No, I believe it is Leonard. I guess we need
to double check with Shame, but I believe it is Leonard.
Or another week. What do you got?
Speaker 2 (46:23):
So Vegas has the Colts total in terms of their
team thirty and a half, Tennessee fifteen and a half.
So I will go right over that. I'll go.
Speaker 1 (46:31):
I will go Colts thirty four, Titans ten. The two
routes for Meddi Garrison and Kevin Bowen here in Week eight. Everybody,
have a great week, great weekend. We'll talk down Monday
recap in Colts and Titans
