Speaker 1 (00:01):
Wow, Wow, Wow. Emergency pod time here Colts Corner with myself,
Kevin Bowen, and I'm not used to these in season
under Chris Bauard, but quite the move by Chris earlier today,
two first round picks six twenty twenty seven eighty Mitchell
to the New York Jets for a mods sauce gardener
in what is certainly one of the biggest trades in

(00:25):
franchise history. Honestly one of the bigger ones we've seen
in the NFL period here recently. But yeah, definitely, speaking
from Colts terms, one of the biggest ones we have
ever seen, if not the biggest. Frankly, you know, DeForest
Buckner was thirteenth overall pick, and you know Trent Richardson
was the first rounder, Carson Wentz first and a third.
I want to say so again, just a massive, massive

(00:47):
swing here by the Colts and certainly a message that
they have sent to their twenty twenty five football team.
And then you know, honestly probably the window here talking
about it moving forward. So emergency pod time, Eddie and
I'll come back tomorrow. I'm recording this Tuesday afternoon, Eddie
and I will come back Wednesday. I want to hear
from Saus Gardner. I want to hear from We'll see
if Chris Boward speaks tomorrow, that would be Wednesday at all.

(01:10):
But I want to hear from those parties involved, and
Eddie and I will do our normal Wednesday afternoon. Get
some Twitter questions, going to focus this just my thoughts
emergency podcast here, what I what I like about the trade,
you know what questions there are about the trade, if any,
and just some overall gardener thoughts there. So again, it's
a it's like the last swing of a home run derby,

(01:33):
one of those swings, just a violent swing here, but
one that takes place at a premium position. And if
you're going to swing, you got to swing there, and
you got to swing to try and help an area
that has really plagued this team, I think for a
while now. And that's just in general pass defense. You know,
I've probably been a little bit more pro edge than Corner,
but you know, certainly the two go hand in hand,

(01:54):
and so you can, you know, easily be talked into
the other. Let's just focus on Gardner here for a second.
He was coming back to the Midwest, selfish. She I
already like him because he's a big golfer. It sounds
like he's ticking up the game here recently and that
swing aarad it looks pretty good. But Detroit native played
at Cincinnati, you know, just in general, I think Alec
Pierce has talked about Sauce and various occasions here over

(02:16):
the last couple of years, and you know, he's always
spoken very highly of him. The Colts, I don't think
they have really any direct connections, like coaching staff wise
or you know, it was the fourth overall pick, so
it's not like you were flirting with him at all
in the draft per se. You know, all pro those
first two seasons and really teams just rarely rarely throw

(02:40):
to him. You know. I guess Brian Mason maybe at
Cincinnati would be the other connection there, but that would
be it. You know, from a coaching staff, I guess
nobody really from an NFL standpoint, So lately, you know,
again all pro the first two years, not as much.
Maybe tension towards him this season, his pro football focused

(03:03):
numbers and I don't think their gospel. You know, he's
twenty first among corners. I want to say it's a
little more than one hundred corners ranked. But if you
look at I mean, the separation numbers are damn impressive,
and you know, maybe a little bit more of a
couple more big plays this year versus completion percentage. I
think it's blow fifty percent, which you obviously like that number.

(03:24):
I would assume he could be good to go for Sunday.
I mean, first off, the Jets already played overseas and
Gardner played in that game, so no passport issue. And
you know, could he follow Drake London around as early
as Sunday as you wait one more week for Mooney Ward,
I would think you could do that just two practices
this week for it would be a walkthrough before they
they they bored the play in late Thursday night to

(03:47):
head over there the Jets. And again this is assuming
I guess Gardner has clear concussion protocol. He didn't play
in week eight. The Jets had to buy in week nine,
so that is you know a little bit of I
guess where he is at right now. And you know,
I got a lot of questions about Moodey Ward. You
know what does this mean? I assume he is good

(04:09):
to go after the bye. He's been at practice the
last couple of days last week, so that's always a
decent sign. I don't know. Shane, I guess hasn't been
abundantly clear on when he would return, But that's a
little bit of an assumption again based off the four games,
and I are he's got him as Sunday against the
Falcons and then you got your bye week. But as
early as you know next week with Kansas City, you

(04:31):
know he could be out there. And I guess as
a transition to kind of what I like, let's just
start right there. It is a premium position you are
taking this swing at. And when you think about the
past defense issues, a trio of Tavarious Ward, Sauce Gardner
and Kenny Moore, the second has got to be viewed

(04:53):
as the best in the league. And if you just
look at the whiteouts. Now you're about to face you know,
Drake London on Sunday and Rashi after the bye and
Nicocollins and we'll see what you know, Brian Thomas and
Travis Hunter look like. And then you got Jackson Smith
and Jigba and then you go back into the AFC
South the end of the year facing Nico Collins again
and you know Thomas and Hunter again, I mean that

(05:14):
is a it's a very potent schedule the rest of
the way and obviously you're going to face some of
that in the playoff round, you know. To me, and
this has probably long been the question of the Chris
Poward era. Corner has probably been one of the positions
he's missed the most at. But you just haven't had
a lot of hits at Again, the positions that really

(05:37):
really impact the game, You've had hits, unquestionably, but you know,
mostly the side of the Lucas Soil Stadium. Guys haven't
played the premium positions. You know, too many linebackers, too
many guards. If you will, you know, even a bona
fide star like Taylor can only get you so so far.
I think the other thing that you like about Gardner

(05:58):
one he's been pretty durable throughout career and he's under
contract through twenty thirty. Now he's getting paid, you know,
a notable amount that will increase here coming up in
the next few years. But still this is not a rental,
which is sometimes you know, what you can get into
at the trade deadline, or just uncertainty about the future,
you know, and again pass rush, you know, past defense,
I should say Russian cover go hand in hand. I mean,

(06:20):
look at what the Steelers did last week to you
in making up for a lack of definites in the secondary.
You know, trade for Kyler Kyle Duggart during the week
and Jalen Ramsey goes to play safety. And yet when
your pass rush does that, you don't have to hold
up as as long as you do. They're just there
isn't a lot of areas on a football team where
it can go hand in hand as seamlessly as Russian cover,

(06:44):
do you know? At six three one ninety, I mean,
he fits everything that I think Lou would want to
be about from a pressman standpoint. And I think we
got off the conference call with Lou in a room
about twenty minutes before this trade was announced there, which
is kind of funny. I think goes mid Brian Brian
Mason on the on the quarter on the cornerback call

(07:04):
earlier today. So I think that pretty much probably covers
everything you like. I mean, again, I'm not gonna pretend
to have a deep intel and a sauce gardner, but
I think you've always heard, you know he's got you
know share a little bit of cornerback attitude to him,
but I think it's it's more of a pretty outgoing
personality than it is you know, whatever troublesome off the

(07:25):
field or anything that you're worried about in that realm.
You know, what questions do you have? Okay, what do
you you know? Yeah, I've seen some people that are
hesitant a little bit, probably on the trade package more
than the player itself. You know, again, I was hoping
for this sort of equivalent. I guess at edge, you know,
I I I think I've expressed you know, I like

(07:45):
Jalen Jones again Ward coming back to me. If I'm
gonna pick one or the other, I can get talked
into probably both. But if I'm gonna pick one, the
other edge would be where you're going now. I'm recording
this a little effort. Two o'clock. We'll see what the
edge market looks like if any of those bigger names move.
We've kind of had a few, you know, singles, I
guess doubles if you want to go there on the
baseball analogy, you know, for our non draft nerds out there,

(08:09):
which hell seemingly I feel like everybody is a draft
nerd that listens to the podcast, but there is no
debating to first round picks is a massive, massive trade.
And you know, if you want to throw Adie Mitchell
just his draft selection in there, you know that obviously
is what top fifty, I forget where he was pick

(08:31):
top fifty or so top sixty something like that. You know,
there's a great benefit to having guys on rookie contracts
that are impactful players. And just because Chris Boward hasn't
really hit on a ton of great first round talent,
it doesn't mean that it doesn't you know, undermine you.
You obviously can move those first round picks and it
can aid you in other areas, you know, trading back
things like that. So I would say those are some

(08:54):
things to think about. I'd say overall, your wiggle room
is just a little bit more confine. So I would say,
just in general, again, wiggle room is a little bit
more I don't know, constricted, you know, mainly from I
would say a quarterback standpoint. Uh, you know, clearly this

(09:14):
means that Daniel Jones is going to be a part
of your future. I don't know. Maybe some people then
have any debate about that, maybe a little bit more
of the pass rush as well. You know, Quitty paying
a contract year and where you're at, sorry Maxwell and
make yeah it is read here Maxwell and making an
appearance on the podcast. So again, those would be some
questions that you would have of just you know, there's

(09:37):
a level of it is restricting you from what you
can do from a future standpoint here in the next
couple of years, but it certainly is opening up the
window for a highly highly invested cults defense. I mean,
you look at the first and second round picks. Yeah
you do love Red, I know, buddy, when you look
at the first and second round picks, invest on this defense.

(09:58):
I mean it is through the room when you look
at that, when you add up the contracts, second, third contracts.
I'd have to look closer into it, but it's got
to be the most highly invested defense of any in
the NFL. So what does that mean, Well, it means
you've got to be a better unit than you've been
so far and here moving forward, this is a you know,
just a very average Frankly defense in my opinion so far.

(10:23):
I'm sure what about a Gus Bradley, He's like, wait
a minute, you know, I was starting torn Achilles Dallas
Flowers out there at the corner last year, and now
this is what the room looks like here. Obviously the
Carl ersa element. I mean, she is clearly letting Chris
Ballard do his thing and push chips into the middle
of the table. Is this her overall approach? Is this

(10:43):
seven and two is now indicating that you know you
can do something like this. I assume Alec Pearce will
be franchise tagged or you know, a deal with him.
You know, I guess you could do one of the
other with him and Daniel Jones, you know, the Ady
Mitchell element. Obviously he wasn't playing, you know, any sort
of notable role for you. You know, there's part of

(11:06):
me it's like, hey, I would have liked to have
seen it play out of Tad longer, you know, again,
bailing on premium position players, you know, a year and
a half into it. I'm not a huge fan of that.
But you know, at the same time, Mitchell was obviously
giving you reasons, you know, to be hesitant on it.
And you know, I guess when I heard Gardner's name,

(11:26):
I don't know if I immediately thought two first round
picks plus a player that was drafted in the first
three rounds. I don't know. Probably I should have jotted
down like what my initial thought was, but I don't
think I necessarily maybe thought that. But again, if you're
going to make a swing like this, and this is
one of the biggest swings this franchise has ever seen,
doing it at a premium position, doing it for a

(11:49):
twenty five year old who's under contract through twenty thirty,
there is a lot to like about that. You know.
I'm sure there are people out there that's like, well,
you know, if you've been, you know, complaining for differences
from Chris Ballard, there's no way you can be complaining
about this. You know. I'm not that black and white necessarily.
I'm a little bit more of like that, let's evaluate
everything individually. I've always been that way about Ballad. Not

(12:10):
everything's great, not everything's awful about him and about his
you know, roster building and moves and all of that.
And I fully can hear people out on again, two
first round picks, even if they are late first round picks,
is a huge, huge trade that you are sending out here.
I guess just kind of last overall, thought before Eddie

(12:31):
and I come back tomorrow, is this of you know,
there is a different Chris Ballard we've seen here in
twenty twenty five, and if you go back to the
start of the off season, the change in defensive philosophy
of kind of admitting, all right, a little bit too vanilla,
whether that was ebra Flus, whether that was Bradley again,
a little bit too vanilla. Let's make a change here.
And then obviously with what you did with Cambina and

(12:53):
Traverius Ward in free agency. I mean, those are two big,
big differences the draft. I don't know, you know, I
mean there's to me, I was kind of curious I
Kenneth Grant would have been there at fourteen? You know
what do we have seen kind of same old Ballard
in you know, having such a trench emphasis here.

Speaker 2 (13:08):
Remember you, baby Ordeal?

Speaker 1 (13:12):
Yes, I did pretend that I was a baby. Yes,
and you were the dad. All right, just a second,
I'm almost done, buddy, Okay, And then this move to
me is a little bit more of a all right,
how much of it is seven to two induced and
how much of this is just hey, moving forward?

Speaker 2 (13:26):
Baby and memo I was a baby and mom balace.

Speaker 1 (13:31):
You were, yes, you were a baby, and now you
are here thankfully, and you are you gonna pick falcons
or colts this week?

Speaker 2 (13:39):
How about falcons? To say on the there tight in.

Speaker 1 (13:47):
Yeah you did pick the colts in the Titan smart
well yeah colts falcons say, I do our helmet carl
outdoors right for Berlin. I should we go to Rascueler
and do it for the German element of it?

Speaker 2 (13:57):
We in memorial in them game the helmet club.

Speaker 1 (14:05):
Right, and we'll be outdoors this week. We'll be outdoors
a lot here over the next couple of weeks here.
So you probably didn't listen. You probably weren't, you know,
tuning in this podcast here Max Bowen, but lit alonder
the weather. So he's home with me right now. So
I apologize for that. But yeah, I'll just end with
this again on ballad of I think you have to
appreciate a change in philosophy, and I probably point more

(14:26):
towards the defensive systematic and what he did in free agency. Again,
this move to me is certainly an indicator of seven
to two, probably more than anything. But that's different. And
you know, again to abandon your overall philosophy, your blueprint,
the binder you walked in there with in twenty seventeen.
You want to see evolvement when you have people in

(14:48):
positions like that and when the results have not carried
out in the manner that you would like. So I
think that aspect of it you certainly appreciate. So we'll
see how it all plays out again, Eddie, I'll come
back tomorrow. We'll do a podcast get to some of
your questions. So appreciate you. Baron with me and Baron
with a little Max Bow in action here up on
the website. Got an article one O seven five fan

(15:08):
dot com Colts Corner signing off emergency podcast time with
the swing of all swings here. Who's a great baseball swing?
Gary Sheffield. I'm trying to think a great baseball swing here?
Maybe one day Max Bow and have that swing. Anything
you want to say before we sign off, anything you

(15:29):
want to say before we sign off? You're good? All right,
we'll see it
