Speaker 1 (00:01):
You can do this you want you? Oh, hello there Internet,
(00:38):
Welcome to issue six hundred and seven of Comic Cast.
I'm Michael Carroll alongside Jong Lee Jong. I had a
golden opportunity this past I guess the last couple of days,
and I have taken this film down off my watch list.
I might idolize it a little bit because I got
(01:01):
the chance to watch K Popp Demon Hunters.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Correct, I see what you did.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
See what I was doing, k Pop Demon Hunters. I'm
on the other side of watching K Pop Demon Hunters,
and I'm a change man.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
Now. Yeah, it's uh, you know, it's you know, I
don't think I would ever call it movie of the Year,
but it has this, It has a rear thing going
for it where I don't think a lot of movies
do this, where it just captive captive vises culture and
(01:32):
pop culture and just uh it just everybody's just you know,
watches it and golden. The song hit number one on
Billboard this week, overtaking I think Ordinary by Alex Warren,
which I think that thing stayed on number one for
such a long time, and I think I think the
soundtrack to K Pop dem Hunters has like four or
(01:54):
five songs in the top twenty or fifteen or something
like that. And yeah, it's a it's a cultural phenomenon,
like and it's just it's it's incredible and I imagine,
come Oscar season, they're gonna win some awards. Uh. And
initially what was crazy is initially people were saying, oh, no,
(02:16):
it can't be nominated for an Oscar because they didn't
have a theatrical run. Well, come to find out, they
released it I think in like three cities for the
minimum amount of time that you need to be considered
for the Oscar. So that's according to some creators on
like on social media, that's what they were saying. They
(02:37):
released in like San Francisco in California cities I think
for a very very short run and so apparently that counts.
So I guess we'll see during nomination when when whenever
Oscar's world's around. But yeah, like it's there's not a
lot of movies have that do this where it just
it just encompasses in the entire world. You have cover singing,
(03:00):
you have covers of Golden and everything being sung all
around the world in different languages. And yeah, it's it's
pretty incredible what this movie has done. And I think
in the last six to seven weeks, it's been number
one on Netflix other than when Happy Gilmore came out.
And just like K pop fans, they've become like ravage
(03:24):
monsters on social media and have campaign to get gold
golden K Pop Demon Hunters back to number one on Netflix,
and they did it the second week hat Big Gilmore
was was out throwing Happy Gilmore and it's it's it's
it's really a phenomenon. I don't know when the last
time we've seen something like this. Uh. And I you know,
I initially I thought, oh, maybe I'm I'm just living
(03:45):
in this bubble. Uh, But I don't think so. I
think I think I think this is a pretty big phenomenon.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
No, it is, I think so. I mean when a
film that released back on June twentieth is still present
and at the top of like all your rankings and
everything still hitting number one, whether it's Billboard or Netflix charts,
like you said, it's back to number one on their
movie charts, I mean, I think it's it's broken through
(04:15):
what maybe was the the demographic for it, and it's
it's gone to everywhere. I knew it was a big
deal when I like when I was at the theater
for I don't remember what movie it was, but when
other critics were like talking about that movie in general,
just talking about the soundtrack, talking about the movie itself,
and it's and that movie had been out like a
(04:35):
month or whatever. You know, it's just it's a wild
experience that that movie's gone on. And now having seen
the movie, I listened to the soundtrack Banger. Then I
watched the movie Banger, like it's just it's it's a
very good movie. I really enjoyed my time. I'm not
typically one for cause I don't know that you would
call it necessarily a musical, but obviously a lot of
(04:57):
the dialogue happens through some of the songs. But I
guess because the music is good, maybe I'm just more
like I'm good with this, like play Golden again, hit
hit repeat, like hit repeat on Takedown or whatever else
you're you're playing, because I enjoyed them all. Soda Pop, yep,
(05:17):
I need a Soda Pop right now, Like it's just
it's very good man.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
Yeah, And and they did a good job of and
and me being on the cultural side of all of
this uh me being Korean, they did and and and
uh the it comes from a uh. The cultural aspect
of of all of this is is pretty significant too.
(05:45):
And Maggie King is a Korean American. She's the director.
She co directed this with her husband, Chris Apple Apple hands.
I think that's how you say his name. And the
way that they casted the movie, the way that they
the way that they casted the singers to this movie,
(06:05):
very methodical, ardent Chow Korean American. Almost every all the
entire cast pretty much all Korean American other than a
few people, Ken Young Ken young being one of them, uh,
Daniel Day Kim being one of them, Lee Young hu
being one of them, and he that man's out a role.
He's on a villain arc this year. Uh but no.
(06:30):
But like I I do love the fact that they,
you know, they they casted this thing, you know, you know,
kind of keeping in mind that let's keep this. You know,
it's k pop Demon Hunters, It's in set in Korea.
It's it's all about the culture. Even though Derpy Derpy
Derpy Tiger and the and the and the bird. That's it.
(06:51):
That goes back to pretty much when Jinu was around.
That story that what do you call those stories is
a fairy tale, not a fairy tale myth.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
Yeah, those stories go back to like when he was,
when Jinu was around, when he was when he was
actually a human. That story goes all the way back.
It's a it's folklore. It's actually uh you know, it's
a folk tale, uh that Koreans used to tell to
kind of get over you know, they were being enslaved
and whatnot. So they were telling stories about perseverance and
all that kind of thing. So that story that just
(07:26):
those small little bits and pieces integrated into the movie.
It was just amazing and just like it's not very
it's not small, but like the details in the fans
that are in the that are you know, in the concerts,
and the old ladies with the sun visor hats, that's
such a that's such a Korean thing to do. They're
outside gardening and they have sunvisor's hat hats and they're
(07:48):
they're covered from head to toe. That was my grandma,
and I would imagine my mom's might turn out to
be that way too. But you know, I think being
on the cultural side of things, I think a lot
of us have seen this kind of stuff in our
lives prevalent in our lives, and some of the stuff
we kind of, you know, kind of shun away because
(08:09):
when we moved or immigrated to America, it wasn't cool.
It was weird to do this kind of stuff. And now,
like you know, for forty almost forty years after our
family immigrated to Korea, like this stuff is like, you know,
part of pop culture, which is really cool to see.
And you know that from that aspect of it, I
thoroughly enjoy it. And there's also subtle there's a lot
(08:33):
of layers to this movie. And the guy that plays
the voice, actor that plays Gunu, he's in this This
is a little bit of an aside. He's in this
drama of Korem trauma called Business Proposal, and the scene
where he runs into roomy on the street. This this
song that they play, it's from Business Proposals. So people
(08:54):
that have seen Business Proposal that something very similar happens
in Business Proposal where he's like walking and the main
girl of the drama like kind of bumps into him
and she falls over. That song plays and he just
looks back and then he just looks back at her.
He's like, you know, watch where You're Going kind of thing,
and when they put it into Capop Damian Hunters, I
was just like, oh my god, what a what what
(09:17):
a nice little easter egg? But no, so I absolutely
love those The diff the layers of this movie for
me are much much deeper, and uh, yeah, it's it's incredible.
I it's a it's a it's a big cultural takeover,
no pun intended, and then just the small nuance, the
(09:40):
small things that they do with like the kup Rahmen,
and it's it's great. I absolutely love it and I
I can't get enough of it. I've been listening to
the soundtrack for almost NonStop for nearly two months since
it's come out. My TikTok Algorithm is still on K
Pop Demon Hunters, so I'm still getting like it's I
(10:03):
don't know when the last time I was such like
if this movie was The Saga Boys, i'd be I
did have my soul already, so I can't remember the
last time a movie like this has consumed my daily life.
(10:23):
My daughter is singing Golden while she's playing, while she's
playing with her toys, and it's, uh, it's pretty great.
My I would imagine my you know, top songs of
this year are gonna be straight from K Pop Demon Hunters.
Even though my daughter loves Disney Princess songs, she loves
K Pop Demon Hunters just as much. So it's it's
(10:45):
been great and I can't wait till they you know,
I still don't think they've announced a sequel, but I
would imagine that this is thing's gonna get a sequel.
And another thing though, before I toss it back to you,
one of the things is like, ah, I feel like Sony.
(11:05):
Like when I told you that Sony Animations may have
taken number one for best Studio, best studio for animation
and story and all that, I still wholeheartedly believe that.
Also for the fact that this is teaching Disney you
don't need to make live action remakes. You need to
(11:29):
you need to create better stories, you need to write better,
you need to find original stories. And like this and
into the Spider Verse movies and and there's another there's
another movie that released recently within the last few years,
understanding Sony Animations that has been incredible. I just forget it.
But but yeah, like this teaches people that original stories
(11:53):
still still can do very very well an original song.
It's just I they you know, they've lost their touch.
I would imagine, you know, I mean, you know, they've
had recent hits, you know, the last couple of years
with like Muana and and and Frozen two, but that
that's far in between, like the the failures of live
action remakes and stuff like that. So I I don't know, like,
(12:15):
I think this should teach Disney Studios that, hey, like
you can do original stories and create this cultural phenomenon.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
Yeah, I mean it, it's it's reached such a wide
array of people at this point, and it's it's definitely
got to get a sequel. I would imagine with the
success of this one, and just how it's still in
our in our algorithms. It's it's still top of mind
even after almost two months of release, three months release, whatever.
(12:45):
It is like, it's it's it's reached a pinnacle that
I did not realize and I am glad I finally
sat down and watched it, because yeah, it going off.
The just the animation, some of the animation moments are
just really really cool. How they do that roomy running
towards the big bad towards the end of it and
(13:08):
the way the the effects are going around her and
everything like it just it looks really cool. And then
of course the soundtrack. I can't say enough about that soundtrack.
It hits so well and I didn't realize until watching
it how integral the lyrics are to the actual things
taking place on screen. And now it's just provided greater
(13:30):
context to what I've been listening to for the last
however long, and I really appreciated that, Like from the
very jump where it's I think it's Zoe. When they
first show show Zoe writing in her book, you know,
different lyrics that she's writing and it's the how It's
done lyrics, and it was like, wait, I recognize that
lyric And then of course they go into how it's
(13:52):
done and it's like, oh, that makes so much sense now,
Like it's so it's just it's so well done. And yeah,
original stories, there's plenty of room for it, because this
was a phenomenal original story and something that I've I've
never seen like close to being to to to have seen.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
Yeah, original story, original ip like this is this is
going to be one of the biggest ips I would
imagine in like the next five to ten years where
you have spinoffs. Baggy Kine came out and said she
wants to do nine nine more of these where you
could tell the story of you know, Jinu, you can
tell the story of Rumi's mom and how she met
(14:31):
her dad, and there's a lot of different and then
you can explore like Zoe Zoe's story a little bit more.
It's just a mirror story a little bit more. It's
a there's a there's a lot of a different array
of stuff that you can really do with this thing.
And just a couple of other things I want to add. Uh.
This brought Leah Solanga back out.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
If you guys don't know, she's this famous Filipino pop star,
megastar who who played Prince, who sang Princess Jasmine and
uh man, she did another one. Who else did she do?
She did on Mulan, She's done, you know she did
Mulan singing voice Aladdin, uh and and now Kop. Although
(15:16):
she had a very small role in this, she played
the ant, but she it brought her back out. And
then one of the biggest things to come out of
this was the the singing voice for Rumi. Her name
is EJ. She was a K pop idol in training,
and then her group kind of didn't make it and
(15:41):
she ended up being more of a writer for different
K pop girl groups. She could be considered maybe a
Benny Blanco of Korean k pop music, where she is
produced a produced massive hits. But on the other end,
she is an amazing singer and I've seen videos of
(16:06):
voice coaches saying like she's an alto. There's absolutely no,
no explainable reason how she can sing and hit some
of those notes. It's not many people can do it,
and she's one of those that can do it, and
she's getting all the flowers that she deserves. And hopefully
(16:26):
I want the I want the three of them to tour,
like just the singing tour. That'd be cool. But yeah,
I think I could do a whole podcast on this thing.
But I'm gonna shut up. And if you guys haven't
seen it yet, please go watch it.
Speaker 1 (16:39):
Go go watch it also really quickly. I don't know
if she's in the Like in the credits they start
showing some of the behind the scenes I wouldn't mind
seeing some more of the behind the scenes of that,
because I thought that was I always enjoy of course,
I always enjoy being seeing cameras in recording boosts and
whatnot and seeing the process for them making something like that.
(17:00):
So I thought that was really cool. Towards the end
of the movie as.
Speaker 2 (17:02):
Well, you know, it's crazy, like she EJ. The the
singing voice hasn't done much press. I haven't seen a lot.
She's I've seen a couple of Zoom interviews, but that's
about it. The the one that I see a lot,
the singing voice, singing member, the one that sings Zoe's part.
(17:23):
Her name is Ria Ami Amy, and she does a
lot and she's like a singer slash rapper, and so
she does a lot on like TikTok and Instagram. But
I haven't seen many from the from EJ, which is
weird and and I'm like, I I'm on, I'm on this,
I'm on the k Pop dimon hunter algorithm. I would
(17:44):
have seen it. Andrew Troy, the one that does gin
New's singing voice, he's uh he. I've seen him in
a couple of interviews too, and some of these, some
of the stories of how they got casted for the
singing roles was is almost a stroke of luck and
I'll tell the story really quick and we can move on.
Andrew Troy basically came out and says that he, you know,
(18:04):
he's a singer and writer and whatnot, and there's a
studio that he uses, and I believe it's in Atlanta.
There's a studio that he uses. And then one night
he was just like he couldn't do anything. So he
was just like, oh, let me just head to the
studio and just you know, lay something down. And so
he went to the studio and then he talked to
the people that were, you know, running the studio, and
(18:25):
after he finished, he left, and the guy that was
in the studio at the time, he called him and
he was like, hey, like, do you mind if I
pass on some of your stuff to some of these people.
He goes, oh, yeah, sure, and he didn't he didn't
think much of it. And then literally literally like as
the movie was coming out, he said that his phone
(18:46):
was blowing up because they heard his voice on because
I guess the guy asked him to lay a couple
of things down for them, and then then he passed
it on and said he his phone was blowing up
because he really and he really didn't have social media.
But he's like he was getting text message and phone calls.
I say, hey, like you like you're in this movie,
(19:06):
and he was like what. So he didn't know until
the movie was released that he was gonna be you know,
his his vocals were going to be used and stuff
like that, and so he just like after the movie
came out, he started Instagram and all these followers started
following him and all this stuff. So and I think
the girl that plays Zoe kind of had the same
thing where she was like she knew of some people.
(19:28):
They asked her to lay some stuff down and then
she didn't hear from them until maybe a few weeks
prior to the movie being released. It's just crazy to me,
like how this stuff works. But yeah, like those kind
of stories are very very cool.
Speaker 1 (19:42):
The comic cast Deep Dive of K Pop Demon Hunters
podcast will be coming out very soon, but.
Speaker 2 (19:49):
Nearly twenty minutes into this podcast, we have other stuff
to talk about.
Speaker 1 (19:52):
Hey, hey, we were fans of K Pop Demon Hunters
here and I'm glad I finally watched it because yeah,
it's phenomenal movie. Go watch it if you haven't watched it,
and while you're online or wherever you are, maybe give
us a follow. I'm at producer Mike.
Speaker 2 (20:05):
Nine seven five and I'm at One Punch and.
Speaker 1 (20:07):
You could rate, review, share, or subscribe to this podcast
and all your favorite podcast platforms five starts that'd be cool.
Really appreciate it. You can also listen to a version
of this podcast Wednesday nights at eight pm on ESPN
ninety seven five and ninety two five. Although with Texas
A and M about to start up again, the Texas
A and M coach a show may push us back
an hour, so we may be Wednesday nights at nine
(20:29):
here very soon. But for now, so we can we
can curse, yeah, exactly. Then we can curse and just
let loose. Really, besides celebrating K pop Demon Hunters, I
do really quickly just want to wish a happy Alien
Earth Day to everyone who celebrates it, because Alien Earth
drops today the day we're recording this. We're recording this
(20:51):
on Tuesday, August twelfth. The show is coming out. I
think it's the first two episodes premiere. I don't know
if you're super excited about the show going to watch
the show, but I am stoked. I can't wait to
watch it.
Speaker 2 (21:04):
Uh you know, I I think through you. The excitement
that you have when you're talking about both Alien and
Predator has gotten me excited. I'm currently on Disney Plus
and I hit Plus and I hit you know, I
put Alien Earth in my on my watch list, sou.
(21:26):
I'll definitely check it out. And I can't wait until
Bad Lens comes out. That one looks really good. I
I just hope that this faith that I've placed in
these two franchises don't let me down, because you've burned
me before. And I know, I know how many I
(21:49):
know you've watched them all and uh and and the
majority of them have been very, very bad. But no,
I I I will try to watch both episodes by
the time we do this next week, and maybe this
is the show that we can kind of get on
for the next for the next however many weeks that
we can do this thing.
Speaker 1 (22:10):
We also have and I want to get back to
Alien Earth here in a second. We also have Peacemaker
dropping next Thursday, so we'll also be getting into that
here very soon. Alien Earth. I just wanted to mention,
did you watch Legion? Were you a fan of Legion
back when it premiered on.
Speaker 2 (22:28):
FX I I want to say I watched the entire
first season. I can't remember if I finished the first season,
but I remember finishing most of the first season.
Speaker 1 (22:44):
I'm in the same boat, and I remember enjoying the show.
And that's a Noah Hawley show, which he's the one
that's doing this Alien Earth show, so I'm excited about that.
He also did far Go on FX, so he he
has a pretty solid track record, and so far, based
off early reviews coming out of Alien Earth, it seems
(23:05):
to be tracking that he's delivered yet again, so I'm
very excited to see what they do with it. It
does mess with the timeline a bit, and it basically
if you were a fan of like Alien Covenant and Prometheus,
kind of tossed that to the side and focus more
on what this is building. Of course, we had Alien
Romulos last year and then we'll have Predator bad Lands
(23:25):
later on this year, so excited to see where they
go with that. I'm very excited to see what they
do with the series, especially being the first time that's
it's Xeno Morris on TV, so that'll be cool.
Speaker 2 (23:36):
Yeah, I'm placing a lot of faith in these two franchises.
Over the next however, a couple of months with this
and bad Lands, and then wasn't there a show about Predator?
Speaker 1 (23:50):
There was a cartoon movie, yeah, the Predator Killer of Killers.
Speaker 2 (23:54):
Yeah, how was that?
Speaker 1 (23:55):
Oh dude, it's amazing. We haven't talked about it, have
we we? I think it was me and Fred of
Dirft Designs that talked about it, but you and I
haven't talked about it. Killer Killers is phenomenal, dude.
Speaker 2 (24:07):
It is a movie.
Speaker 1 (24:08):
It's a movie. It's an anthology movie where it's three
stories of different warriors over the course of history going
up against different predators over the course of history. And
it is okay. It is so well done. The animation
is very very good. The stories are really interesting in
how they tie into each other. By the end of it,
(24:31):
it left me like, okay, we're about to wrap up.
Oh no, there's twenty minutes left in this movie. Where
are we going to go? And it does some interesting
things with the Predator lore, It does some interesting things
for the Predator franchise in general, and it has some
deeper ramifications. And I also want to add that since
(24:51):
it released, they've actually, I guess you could say they've
done a patch or an update to the movie. Where
the it had a mid credit scene. The mid credit
scene has now been extended to add a couple of
things to it that I again very excited to see
what they can do with it with whether it's a
(25:13):
follow up to that movie or just you know, wherever
it goes. It is a very very well done Like
Dan Tracktenberg really understands how to use the Predators and
how to tell these stories, these interesting stories that have weight,
have emotional but still has cool action like it's it's
really well done. I'm I was thoroughly impressed with Predator
Killer of Killers.
Speaker 2 (25:33):
Yeah, I got some homework to do.
Speaker 1 (25:36):
Dude, you I think you'll enjoy it. I think you will.
And also like the second story. There's actually I don't
know that there's ever outside of a couple of pieces
of dialogue. It's it's pretty just a visual story, which
I thought was really good.
Speaker 2 (25:53):
Okay, I'll definitely check that out. But yeah, yeah, I
guess you can ramp up in I didn't imagine that
we'd be ramping up for a lot of content within
the next month or two, but I guess that's where
where where we're headed.
Speaker 1 (26:09):
That's what we are, We're headed there. We're nerds in
a happy place right now. And speaking of amount of content,
when I was working on like building the episode and stuff,
was trying to figure out what we would talk about,
and I thought I had it pretty nailed down. And
then like ten hours eleven hours ago, at least at
the time of this recording, Ryan Reynolds decided to post
(26:31):
something very cryptic on his Instagram. He posted the Avengers logo,
but it has like the A for anarchy kind of
spray painted over the top of it. And it is
the same logo that he was wearing on a hat
last year around Deadpool and Wolverine, and he also was
(26:52):
wearing it, or excuse me, he wasn't wearing it. It
was in the movie Deadpool and Wolverine. It was a
flag at Cassandra Nova's bass. So he didn't say anything
when he posted this, He just posted the image on
his Instagram. Of course, the internet has done what internet does,
wildly speculate, and so I thought, why don't we join
(27:14):
in on the fun. Well, let's wildly speculate as well.
Is this something? Is this something that he's just teasing
in terms of Deadpool being in Avengers Doomsday or do
you think there could be something more here?
Speaker 2 (27:28):
I initially think yes, and then I, I mean, there's
He's pretty methodical when it comes to social media, so
I would think that, yes, this is for Avengers Doomsday.
And I've stumbled upon this Reddit post about the shirt
(27:50):
and somebody actually made shirts of this when Deadpool and
Wolverine came out, and it's a fan made shirt and
this mom made it for I believe herself and her kids,
(28:13):
and then Ryan Reynolds basically used it and posted it
onto his Instagram. And this post was back in a
year ago, so this post was a year of the
shirts was a year ago, and yeah, I would you know,
(28:35):
I something guess who finally got to know why thora
was crying? Yeah, I want to know too, And I think, yes,
this is a tease to him being in the movie.
And I don't know why he would post it without it,
And I'm just going to say that, yes, this is
his announcement to where he's saying Deadpool is going to
(28:57):
be in Avengers Doomsday. And like you mentioned, you know
before the before we recorded the second round of casting,
chairs are gonna sounds dirty. The casting, the casting announcements
are going to come out, so I would imagine his
name is going to be one of the probably one
of the last ones to come out.
Speaker 1 (29:16):
Does Deadpools reveal end up on a casting couch.
Speaker 2 (29:24):
I it would not surprise me if that happened.
Speaker 1 (29:28):
Yeah, the rumor is that we are supposed to get
another round of reveals for the Doomsday cast, because, of course,
while that was a lot of names revealed back in
I don't even remember when that was, now April May
whenever it was there, we got, however, many names, but
there's supposedly more names being involved, hence why it's taken
(29:48):
so long to shoot. I believe Pedro Pascal has wrapped
up shooting for his part in the movie, but there
are others may be being involved. There's others maybe that
are going out there now to start shooting. So I
feel like this is just a simple the announcement of him, impossibly,
Hugh Jackman being in the cast for Doomsday is coming soon.
(30:10):
I've saw something about maybe towards the end of this
month they do the second half of the casting reveal
of some kind, which would be which wud be interesting.
I do like that people were wondering could this also
be you know, we're seeing different Avengers teams in this film. Now,
it's the Avengers teams we're seeing are the ones we
know about, the Thunderbolts, the New Avengers, and Sam Wilson's Avengers.
(30:34):
But could we see another Avengers team one that we
don't know And the A on that Avengers logo makes
me think of the Anarchy Avengers from the comics. Now,
I don't think we'll get that team that's represented in
the comics because that team has Reary Williams, Miss Marvel
Spider Punk. I think it's flat Captain Anarchy, who's kind
(30:58):
of like Captain America, but he has Anarchy A on
his shield, a different version of Daredevil and a I
think it's Adam Oh, what's the Hulk. It's a different
version of Hulk in this one, and they're but they're
all punk themes. So I don't know that we're gonna
get that necessarily, but you could see them maybe adapting
(31:20):
Anarchy Avengers in some way to include maybe Deadpool Wolverine,
and maybe even the team from Deadpool and Wolverine being involved.
Speaker 2 (31:29):
Yeah, that wouldn't surprise me. That wouldn't surprise me if that, uh,
you know, if that's what ends up happening, I imagine
that we're going to you know, if he's in it.
I can't imagine him being in it too long because
(31:49):
breaking the fourth Wall is, you know, it's all you know, obviously,
it's it's great for you know, comedic purposes and purposes
and whatnot, and and I just don't know, I don't
know how that would work when you know Doom's about
to basically, you know, destroy all the universes and you
(32:14):
just have Deadpool over there cracking jokes. Yeah, I can't
imagine him being in it for too long.
Speaker 1 (32:20):
Yeah, I could see like them being part of it
in smaller bits, but not necessarily a full on, large
part of the movie, being like one of the main
characters that you follow throughout the course of it. I
think Ryan Reynolds has talked about he feels like Deadpool
at this point is better served as a side character
in some of these movies. So I could I could
(32:41):
see him definitely fitting that role. I wouldn't just talking
about the fourth Wall. And since we are in Avengers Doomsday,
I wouldn't mind seeing him and she Hulk. Tatiana Masslani's
she Hulk being involved and seeing the both of them
break the fourth wall in one moment and then realizing
both of them can break the fourth wall would be
(33:02):
kind of interesting. I don't know that we'll get that.
I don't know that she is going to be an
Avengers Doomsday, but I think that would be cool. I wouldn't,
like I said, I don't know that this and the
Hulk from the Anarchy Avengers, who are from Earth one
three eight is Robbie Banner. His Hulk transformation is triggered
(33:22):
by rock music, so I don't think we'll be getting
that in this movie. But maybe the Anarchy Avengers title
is used for Deadpool and his band of mutants and
his band of characters because maybe Blades in there, maybe
Jennifer Gardner's electures in there. I don't know that that's
the case, but it could be a way to explain
(33:43):
that team causing chaos and whatnot. So it's interesting, though.
I was not expecting a cryptic post from Ryan this
this Tuesday morning.
Speaker 2 (33:54):
Yeah, but I guess that's a maybe this it's a
post that's gonna kick off the marketing two the second
round of casting, like is hey, don't forget about us.
So we're gonna be releasing next year, which interesting. There
are rumors that they haven't finished the script, but I don't.
I guess we'll.
Speaker 1 (34:10):
See, right, And I wouldn't be shocked if this was
a way also to kind of get ahead of you know,
if they are, if folks are starting to head down
there to start shooting their parts. Maybe this is their way,
because I feel like all the Spider Man stuff we've
been seeing was kind of their way to get ahead
of people taking grainy photos of him being outside and
(34:30):
swinging and all that. Like this may be their way
of getting ahead of the the news of oh, so
and so is in the cast, and so and so
is in the cast and all that. So that may
be part of it. Social media has provided a couple
of things this morning, because this I didn't have on
my rundown, But James Gunn has been active on social media,
as he's prone to do as usual. There's a couple
(34:53):
of things from James Gunn, but I'll start with the
most recent thing because it just came out about an
hour ago. He said, quote, this is from Blue Sky.
Superman is coming to your homes this Friday, August fifteenth,
available now for pre order or catch it while it's
still in theaters. It's about according to Paul Tassia Forbes,
(35:15):
that's about thirty five days in between theater release and
streaming release. That feels a little quick to me, a little,
just a little.
Speaker 2 (35:25):
That's insane to me. I don't know what to say,
because I you know, you know, just a week ago,
maybe even a week ago, I was be reading movies
about releasing only forty five days and then going straight
to streaming, and this is, you know, one of them,
and I don't, man, it's just Warner Brothers a notorious
(35:45):
for this stuff. Yeah, man, I just I don't understand it.
I mean, I guess, yeah, I mean, what's the point
of going to movies anymore if you're gonna release it
a month of one month, one month after it comes out? Yeah,
you want your streaming numbers to go up, sure, but
it's just like you're eliminating. You're basically going to eliminate.
(36:09):
You're gonna leave a lot of money on the table
by not releasing it, not keep it in theaters for
that long. Like I know, it's not that much money,
but you know's pennies compared to what you've earned now.
But it's just like, come on, man, like keep it
in theaters for three months and then release it, you know,
ninety days forty like double double. I'm not asking for
(36:30):
much and I don't know, like this, it may not
seem like it's gonna affect you that much, but the
next time a blockbuster like this comes out for you,
like people are gonna look at it and be like, well,
why do I have to go watch it now? I have,
you know, two kids at home. I don't want to
spend this extra money. I'm gonna I'm just gonna wait
because they're gonna release it four weeks four weeks later.
(36:52):
I'm like, really, like, I don't know, you know, it's
you know, for someone with two kids, and that can
you know, if I didn't really really enjoy these movies
or going to a movie theater, I wouldn't want to
go out and watch them either. Likes. I don't get
(37:12):
the point of doing this. Well, I get it, I
understand why. I can understand why, but it's just it
makes no sense to me, Like the theater going experience
is nearly dead.
Speaker 1 (37:25):
And I do want to make it clear that this
is the pre order so it's going to be about
twenty to I don't know the exact price, but twenty
the thirty bucks to watch it at home come this Friday.
So this is the PVOD release, and then eventually we'll
have the HBO Max release. My guess would be, let's
(37:45):
see if the movie came out in July, probably October
would be. My guess is when it hits HBO Max,
which still three months is a lot different from when
you and I were younger, because I remember back in
the day waiting for movies for like to hit Blockbuster
like six months after release, like it was. It was
(38:06):
a huge deal when movies finally got to Blockbuster way
back when.
Speaker 2 (38:11):
Yeah, I don't know. So it says that it's releasing
on digital August fifteenth, So yeah, so that means it's
going that you're going to be able to buy it
or be able to view it August fifteenth.
Speaker 1 (38:25):
No, you can view it, but it won't be HBO Max.
Speaker 2 (38:29):
Yeah. Yeah, so it looks like, Okay, man, I'm wondering
what this means for Fantastic four if it kind of
if they're going to follow the same model and release
that thing a month to a month and a half
after release or I guess two months after the release.
I don't know, but yeah, this isn't looking great for
(38:55):
just movies in general. And I would imagine maybe this
is going to be like the norm going forward, because
like these two movies were supposed to be the blockbuster
that kind of brought the general audience back to theaters.
And yeah, I don't know, the future of the industry
is not going to be great. And you were talking
about how, you know, when we were growing up, man
releasing it within the same year if a movie came
(39:18):
out in like February and then we get us getting
the digital or not the digital, the physical DVD release
in like the summer or like the fall was like
super early, and I remember like, oh my god, I
can't believe it's coming out the same year. And you
just don't do that anymore, obviously because it's easier to release,
but also like they're not gonna they're not gonna give you,
(39:42):
you know, the urgency to go to the theater anymore.
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (39:46):
Yeah, it was a long time to wait for that
VHS release. The there is an alternative aspect of looking
at this that I wanted to bring up because I
think we're both on the side of not being fans
of this short release window or shorter theater window. But
Jacinni Sophia, an author I follow online, she brought this up.
(40:12):
I need people to understand that the pandemic and the
economy have changed things. There are countless people who simply
can't make it to theaters, not to mention, digital purchases
aren't cheap either, and they also contribute to sales, allowing
films to be more widespread and accessible, builds more hype.
It's a good thing and people need joy because let
me have Clark and Lewis in my home. So there
(40:36):
you go. There's an alternative perspective on it.
Speaker 2 (40:40):
I mean, I guess I don't know. Yeah, I mean,
you know, it's all about maximizing profit, right, so this
is the best way to do it. You know, it's
still on top of everyone's mind. People that loved it,
loved going to theaters, like, they'll you know, they'll buy
it for sure. People that haven't seen it, they'll buy
it for sure. You know, people with people that are
(41:02):
you know, that have HBO Max. That's what it's called, right, Yeah,
that's the people that have HBO Max that don't want
to buy it, will you know, we'll wait for its
pending release. I would imagine within the next couple of months,
maybe like maybe not even a couple of months. I
would imagine maybe like end of maybe September is when
(41:24):
it's going to release the HBO Max. But yeah, it's
uh yeah, I mean I don't like, you know, I
guess do what you need to do, but it just
doesn't seem like it's the healthiest thing to do for
theory your theoretical box office numbers. And I know, like
the the the box office numbers aren't exactly the numbers
(41:46):
because you're splitting with like, you know, the movie theater companies,
and you're splitting with you know, there's a there's they
probably take home maybe fifty percent of the box office totals.
Maybe that's maybe that number is a little conservative. Maybe
they take they take away a little, they take away more,
but releasing it on digital they take almost I think
(42:09):
one hundred percent of the profits, which I understand that's
where a lot of your margin is going to come from.
But it's just I don't know, I feel like I
don't want to side with the theaters here, but it
just feels like it's a disservice, especially when you like
have a director like James Gunn who shot this thing
in imax and which you know, I didn't go watch
(42:32):
it imax, but for the people that did, like, that's
an experience, and I think you're just taking it away
a little too early.
Speaker 1 (42:38):
Yeah, I think that's my thing, is the lack of
urgency it will it is to now go see a theater.
And because she's right on the aspect of it is
price here, We've talked about it. We talked about it
last week. The theaters are price here nowadays. So it's
not just a ten bucks necessarily. It is thirty forty
(42:59):
fifty depending on how many people you're going with. So
it is it is more expensive for those theater moments.
So if you I don't know, I just I wish
theater studios, theaters they would have a longer release window
because if I don't feel if I feel like I
have missed it in the first week or two, I
can just wait. I can just wait for it to
(43:20):
just come out later on at this point, and that's
that that sense of urgency outside of the first weekend
seems to be gone.
Speaker 2 (43:30):
Oh for sure, and like, I don't know, and I
feel like this is one of those things where you
can never get it back, like you can't, you can't,
I don't. I don't think you can reverse track and
do this because once you shorten, like the expectation now
is for for the viewers is well, they're going to
release it a month and a half after why should
(43:52):
I go watch this? They're not going to It's not
one of those things where you can go, you can,
you can try to do it, and then you'll, you know,
I think you'll probably we see some outrage if you do.
But it's like you can't shorten the release window and
then go back to it being in theaters for three months.
The one movie I think that I'm thinking about that
may do that is maybe Avatar, because I think Avatar
(44:16):
I almost feel like that James James Cameron has, you know, obviously,
James Cameron has this you know, old school mentality of uh,
you know, making sure people are going to the movies,
and I think Christopher Nolan probably falls in line with this.
Directors with a lot of clout over studios, I think
will have an opportunity to keep their movies in theaters
(44:38):
for a lot longer and and and delay digital release.
I would imagine the Odyssey movie and Avatar are gonna
be in theaters for much longer than Superman and Fantastic
for which, to be fair, the Fantastic for the Marvel
hasn't didn't done this yet, But I I just I'm
(44:59):
just assuming that we'll see a Fantastic four announcement soon
because it almost feels like they're that studio in Disney
are kind of working off the same model as Warner Brothers.
Speaker 1 (45:12):
Yeah. No, And going back to what you said about
directors that have clout, I mean I still can't see
the Odysseus trailer online as of yet. It's only available
in theaters. And how many directors or studios are able
to pull that off currently not very many. I think
the what was it when I went to see Fantastic Four,
(45:34):
That's the first time where it was multiple trailers that
I had not seen as of yet premiered, and that
was the Avatar trailer and the Odysseus trailer. I think
the Avatar trailer is now available online, but Odysseus. I
just looked at Odysseus Odyssey trailer. The Odyssey trailer, I
still have yet to see it online, which I find
that interesting that Nolan's doing that. And then going back
(45:57):
to pv OD, I'm curious what the numbers are for
pvo D. We can. I mean, it's another podcast at
some point, but the PVOD numbers, like how many people
are spending that that money to get it digitally that
first day. I mean, obviously it's enough because they keep
doing it, but I don't know. I've just always been
curious about that because to me, it feels like, well,
(46:19):
I could just wait till it hits HBO Max, or
I could just wait till Disney Plus or whatever, unless
it's a movie that I really really really want and
that maybe like for me, and maybe Predator bad Lands
when that comes out.
Speaker 2 (46:32):
Yeah, exactly. I don't know. It's a new norm and
I guess we gotta. I feel like I'm maybe the
old man screaming at the clouds.
Speaker 1 (46:41):
We're the yeah, one hundred percent where old man screaming
at clouds right now. James Gunn also online. You know,
we talked about it earlier. He talks a lot. He
talks a lot online, and he squashes a lot of
rumors online. There was a recent rumor that had it
to where Robin was set to appear in Batman Part two.
(47:05):
The post said, Robin is reportedly in the script for
the Batman two. The sequel will be will be as
dark as the first, and we'll take a quote big
swing swing with Matt Reeves and Matt Mattinson's Tom Tomlin quote,
really going for it, for it guy, And then James
Gunn responded, guys, please stop believing this nonsense. I think
(47:27):
six of us have read the script. No one knows
anything about Batman two. Yeah. So if you thought Robin
was going to a premiere in the Batman Part two one,
I don't. I don't think that's the movie where Robin's
making his first appearance. And I think it's gonna be
Batman Brave in the bold second. Just some of these,
(47:48):
some of these accounts, you just gotta be watchful of
these accounts, Like this is an account that has a
blue that had a blue check mark. I don't know
if it still does DCU, Prime TV. Don't believe it.
Just just check. Just just do a little googling or
something like that.
Speaker 2 (48:05):
Yeah, I over the last couple of years. I think
maybe since Spider Man No Way Home, I've kind of
made my I've kind of made it more of a
priority to not try to be spoiled as much because
it just ruins and and and by the way, my
baby woke up a little early, and Teresa is out
with the big one, so uh and then this one,
(48:27):
if I put her down, is gonna cry. I don't
know why she's aside to the podcast. She she she
pooped in her sleep and woke up earlier than she
was supposed to, so so she's a little cranky. But anyway,
that's her cooping in the background. I have her on
my lap. But anyway, but like what my thing about
this is, I've tried to stay away from spoiler stuff
(48:52):
ever since No Way Home, and just because it just
ruins the experience for me, Like I just I don't
want to get be spoiled anymore. I've only I only
follow a few, I only follow a few you know, scoopers.
And even then, like Daniel R. Priquet has a lot
of his stuff on his Patreon, so it's paywalled, and
(49:13):
so I try to, you know, avoid spoilers like this,
and I you know, it's crazy. What's crazy enough? And
I thought about this while you were talking, is like,
I don't think we need Robin in the second movie
because the crazy part is the movie was really long.
(49:40):
I felt like we didn't get enough Bruce Wayne and
Batman like character development to me, Like, I feel like
we could have spent There's there's almost no Bruce Wayne,
Like I don't know what his Bruce Wayne is. It's
just it almost seems like a uh he His character
(50:00):
seems like a darker version of Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker.
And Andrew garfields Peter Parker was pretty emo, and I
feel like I haven't seen a lot and so to
insert another another protagonist, I feel like is a disservice
to Robert Pattinson. And I don't think. I don't think
(50:21):
we need that until maybe if you're going to do
Robin until the third one, and even then, like, I
don't even know if this version of Batman needs a Robin.
Speaker 1 (50:32):
Yeah, I agree, I don't. I don't know that he
he needs one at this point. And like you said,
there wasn't there wasn't really a Bruce Wayne in that movie. Yes,
he he shows up as Bruce Wayne in moments of
that movie. But I think it's more of the story
of the bat or Bruce trying to come to terms
(50:52):
with how to be both Batman and Bruce Wayne. He
can't be the Batman all the time. People need hope,
they don't need just this fear character. So I think
a big part of that movie is him learning that.
So we need to see that development in the second
movie and taking the time to also introduce a Robin
and all that, Like there's we need more time with
(51:13):
this Bruce Wayne and this Batman because of that, that
journey that he goes on needs to to to finish
up in growth and everything. So I yeah, I agree,
And it's just this version just never it's it's not
a version that screams like we need bat family in
(51:33):
this one, right, Like this one is is comic book
in nature, but it's not like Superman comic book level.
It's not even Batman in Forever comic book level. You know.
It's just the goofiness of needing, not goofiness I shouldn't
say that, but just the more nerdy aspects of Batman.
I don't think you'll see that with Robert Pattinson's Batman.
Speaker 2 (51:56):
Yeah, like No One's No One's Batman. I agree Nolan's
Batman didn't need a Robin like there was I mean
a quote robin at the third movie. But Nolan's Batman
didn't need one. And I don't think and I think
you're right, I don't think Reeve's Batman needs one either.
I mean, I guess we'll see how this the second
movie play, you know, plays out. It sounds like they're
(52:18):
not going with the Court of Owls. I know, obviously
we don't know, but there were rumors out there that
I think we're shot down. But but yeah, I I
I wonder, like the director this, the direction of the
second movie will determine. Well, we'll set up the table
too for us to see, does this Batman need a robin?
If if the second second one doesn't serve up any
(52:44):
inkling of needing somebody to help him, I don't think
we'll need one.
Speaker 1 (52:48):
Couldn't it be at least with this version of it.
Wouldn't it be possibly Catwoman that helps him?
Speaker 2 (52:55):
Oh? Oh yeah, definitely they they It's it's been established
that Selena is going to be a big part of
at least these movies, these next two movies.
Speaker 1 (53:04):
I would imagine, and with him being on better terms
with Alfred, I would imagine Andy Serkis is more involved
in these next two than he was in the first one.
This the first one was a big growth period for
for Bruce, and it was him understanding that he needs
people around him and that he needs to provide hope again,
hope for the city, not just the fear to scare
(53:26):
criminals and whatnot, and utilizing what he can do as
Bruce Wayne Moore in the next movie or two is
going to be a big, I think big part of
it before we wrap up. I have one last story
that I want to get to before we finish up,
and that is and it's staying in the DC world there.
(53:47):
You know. The new movie Weapons is out in theaters
this past weekend, getting really good reviews so far. And
of course Zach Krieger's first movie, Barbarian got really great
reviews as well. So he's a director in kind of
rising in the ranks, if you will. And from the
(54:07):
Hollywood Reporter there was an article written about his I
guess working on a script that's getting attention, so from
the Hollywood Reporter. Up next, he's got Resident Evil for
Sony which he will shoot in Prague this fall. He
also wrote a secret sci fi movie he's hoping to
go after that. Then there's the one that's been getting
(54:29):
attention online, Henchman, a potential DC Studios movie that he's
called the favorite script he's ever written, which he pinned
before his twenty twenty two breakout Barbarian. According to sources,
Henchman would center on a low level henchman in the
Gotham crime world who gains notoriety after managing to incapacitate
(54:51):
Batman through a stroke of luck. The Dark Knight could
appear briefly in the movie, while Harley Quinn and Joker
are in the project as well. Craiger is not yet
pitched it to DC Studios, though the company is said
to be aware of the interest. But even with Kraiger
being one of the most in demand filmmakers in town,
like any ip swing, Henchman faces several hurdles. DC Studios
(55:13):
hasn't yet cast a Joker or a Batman. Harley Quinn
theoretically but probably not, could still be played by James Gunns,
the suicide Square of Margot, Robbie and DC Boss's Gun
and Peter Saffron likely want to be careful with anything
Batman related. While they allow the Batman filmmaker Matt Reeves
to make Batman Part two and perhaps even a Batman
(55:33):
Part three, there's no telling what villains would factor into
that one, so Gun and Saffron don't want to step
on the toes and double up on villains in their universe.
So Craiger has this Henchman script in the works. Does
that interest you at all? And if so, do you
see any way that this could be anything outside of
(55:55):
a maybe animated feature, because I have a hard time
seeing it being a live action film.
Speaker 2 (56:03):
Those hurdles are huge. He's obviously you know, obviously you don't,
you know, Matt. It seems like the focal point is
going to be Matt Reeves Batman, and I'm not sure
like they're gonna be like, oh yeah, Matt, let's read
let's use Zach's script. And I would imagine Zach wants
to be did the director as well, because like you
(56:25):
were saying, like Zach Krieger is on a meteoric rise,
almost akin to maybe like a Jordan Peel like that
that maybe not as fast of a rise, but Jordan
Peele's name got white hot really fast, and I feel
like Zach Kreeger in his own in his own like
(56:48):
in his own genre is kind of rising really really fast.
And just to the aside, I think he's gonna use
Austin Abrams again for what's that movie they're about to
shoot Resident Resident Evil? I think there Austin Abrams is
the lead for that one too, which he is the
lead for Weapons, which I want to watch, by the way,
which I don't know if I want to. There's there's
(57:11):
two horror movies, that one and what's the other one?
The the movie about the dog?
Speaker 1 (57:17):
Oh yeah, good boy.
Speaker 2 (57:19):
Yeah, those are two movies I want to go out
and watch in theaters. I just don't know if I
want to spend the dough to go do it. But anyway,
I I think the hurdles are very massive and it's
very very high, and I don't know if they're going
to be able to clear it unless you're gonna use
(57:40):
this for this one to launch Batman Bold Brave in
the Bold and then and then just do some tweaks
to that and maybe push any Bushetti out. Uh. Yeah,
I think that's the only logical situation where you could go, was, uh,
just replace Muschetti with Kreeger.
Speaker 1 (57:59):
Yeah, that would be probably that. But also tone wise,
like what's the tone for this? It sounds like it
could be more of a comedic tone based off just
him incapacitating Batman off for sheer luck and maybe just
the ride of that. So that's why it like it
makes me think this could be a story that's told
in animation very easily, with not necessarily the voices of
(58:24):
Harley Quinn's the animated shows characters, but you know something
along those lines that's kind of the tone and vibe
I get from just reading the pitch. So I don't
