Cowboys Let's go.

Speaker 3 (00:15):
Are you ready for a break?

Speaker 4 (00:16):
Yes?

Speaker 3 (00:17):
Are you ready for a break?

Speaker 5 (00:19):
Absolutely?

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Ready for a break?

Speaker 3 (00:21):
Yeah, and so much for that.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
It's time for the Break on Dallas Cowboys dot Com
with Mbar Garcia, Brian brought Us, Votch Lombardi, and Derek Eagleton.

Speaker 6 (00:38):
It is Wednesday, September seventeenth, twenty twenty five, Season twenty one,

the Star and we are presented by LG. LG's the
world's number one o led TV brand for eleven years

Speaker 7 (00:53):
Forward slash oh led ego.

Speaker 6 (00:55):
All right, today we start turning the page. We get
you guys ready for Cowboys versus Bears. That that's happening
this Sunday. I think it's a three thirty three twenty five,
three twenty five kick. Thank you, Brian. This this Sunday
in Chicago. We're going to get into the Chicago Bears
offense versus the Dallas defense. Today, tell you about some

(01:15):
of the things that you should be expecting to see
and some things that the Cowboys will need to do
in order to perform well defensively, hopefully have a better
performance defensively than what we saw against the Giants, and
hopefully bring home another win. Let's start first, though, with
Cavante Turpin on the injury front. At this point where
it's sounding like there's a possibility he can play. What

(01:37):
are you hearing, I know, Brian, you talk to folks
around here, what are you hearing as far as his
injury and in the likelihood of him being available to.

Speaker 8 (01:43):
Yeah, they're just going to see how things go this
week though, and you know, and and then then they'll
have a better understanding because today being the first first
practice we'll see it'll probably be limited in a lot
of things that he's going to do. But it's it's
really going to be about timing, it's going to be
about rust, it's going to be how he's able to
kind of manage some things along the way. So as

(02:05):
you get to when we maybe talk about the Fridays
and we just got to see where the designations are
every day. But it's a little bit of just trying
to kind of get through the first couple of days
and then see where he's at for game day. If
there's improvement, then you'll probably see him playing. If not,
then you'll probably see him being in active this week.
Of course, that seems pretty logical the way it is,

(02:27):
but it really is about timing and about rust right now.

Speaker 9 (02:30):
Brian Derek Ag would you guys say that Turpin's game
last week showing some things from a wide receiver standpoint
four catches forty some yards touchdown, would you say that
this is not a great time for him to be
hurt or not playing because the competition with him and
Tobert is kind of ramping up a little bit, you know,
like you know, if you look at the depth chart,

(02:51):
brand I haven't seen him before in the depth chart,
but it is always Tobert or turp In. I haven't
seen or before, right, but I guess both those guys
are like close competing. So when Tolbert makes this move,
when Turpin makes this move forward, hopefully him not not
not being out so long drops him down in that,
you know, the wide receiver situation competition going on, Brian Bros.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
Then Mingo is coming back.

Speaker 9 (03:11):
What does that look like from a wide receiver standpoint
versus that.

Speaker 7 (03:19):
Honestly, I don't look at it.

Speaker 6 (03:21):
I don't look at those two as a competition because
they're so vastly different. They provide different things for your offense.

Speaker 7 (03:27):
Uh So I look at.

Speaker 6 (03:27):
Them as as different types of players that they will
use in different types of situations. The way they use
Cavante Turpin is more as Brian. You'll remember this those
slash days of Courdell Stewart or Pittsburgh, Right, He's more
of that kind of player. They're gonna line him up
in the backfield, they'll line him up in the slot.
They'll they'll do a lot of different things. I'm run him, uh,
They'll throw passes to him, They'll do a lot of

(03:48):
different things with him. He's a he's a gadget player.
I don't think of a Tobard in that way. I
don't think that's what they designed for toward So to me,
it's not really a competition. It's more about, you know,
what do they need in a specific matchup with a team,
and where they think they can get the best matchups,
and they'll use those guys in that way.

Speaker 9 (04:04):
Why I think that's important You're not wrong. But if
I'm looking for Tober to give me something, I'm gonna
look for eighty eight to give me that. Turpend gives
me something that those other guys don't don't give me yep, right,
you know what I'm saying. So now I'm looking like,
oh man, he got CD covered up where now and
Tolbert's single cover. He's not beating that single coverage. I
feel like Turpin could do something different than what those

(04:25):
other guys.

Speaker 8 (04:26):
I worried in the game the other day when Turpin
went out and all of a sudden, you needed punt
returns and you needed a kick return, and you're thinking, like, gosh, dang,
there's twenty some odd seconds left. How nice would it
be to have And maybe the Giants just kicked the
thing out of the ends and they tried to kick
the ball. If you notice the way from Turpin that
the first ball went down the field and they kicked

(04:46):
it at Tolbert, you know, they got two guys back there,
and you know, and then he's bringing it back.

Speaker 5 (04:50):
To you know. But that's where I was.

Speaker 8 (04:53):
I was, Yeah, he's capable of making plays down the field.
We saw it a little bit last year, and you know,
people are like, well, he's you can't throw him the
ball down the field.

Speaker 5 (05:01):
No, that's not true.

Speaker 8 (05:02):
You could throw him the ball. We're down in the
red zone. You think a little guy in the red
zone would be a problem. No, he first touched him, Dak,
you know, ripped it down the middle of the field,
and there's you know, turping to catch the ball. Yeah,
there's clearly a difference too. I just feel like, to me,
you're losing a dynamic player. I mean, when we could
talk about Lamb and Pickens and those guys, but me personally,

(05:27):
I throw Turpin right in there.

Speaker 4 (05:29):
I was.

Speaker 5 (05:30):
I was.

Speaker 8 (05:30):
I was really nervous about punt returns and kick returns
in that game once he went out, because I lost
my element of being able to attack the Giants and
potentially gain field position that way.

Speaker 7 (05:42):
So let me extend this question.

Speaker 6 (05:43):
I'll go to you first on this one, ag If
if that's the case, I think we all agree he
is a dynamic returner, probably the best, if not one
of the best, in the National Football League and does
so much to change games. From that standpoint, Should the Cowboys,
and it's a tough tough ask, but should the Cowboy
is consider maybe using him a little less on offense.
We know he's slight, and we know that the more

(06:05):
hits you take, the more hits you take in the NFL,
the more likelihood there is that you end up injured.
Should they look at maybe lessening what they're doing with him,
maybe even some of the running where they're just literally
lining him up to run. Should they change some of
that in order to make sure he's available for those
other things?

Speaker 8 (06:22):
Yeah, I know you're gonna go ford ag. I mean
you just triggered me on something, Go fort Ages.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
Okay.

Speaker 7 (06:28):
By the way, I know about I know what Brian
feels about this.

Speaker 5 (06:31):
We had this go ahead.

Speaker 10 (06:33):
I mean, I like the argument. That's a that's a
good logic behind it. But at the same time, he
brings just such a different game to the offense. And
it's not like they're super extra utilizing him. They're using
him in certain occasions, and I think that once you

(06:53):
watch what he can do, it's so hard for you
to be like, let's not use him. But I get
it when you talk about special teams plays. Yes, he's
a crucial player, and we've seen the kind of play
play changing games that are plays. Oh my god, there

(07:17):
you go get changing play that he makes. But last
year we've talked about it, Oh, the Cowboys should involve
turping a lot more. And I feel like this year,
with the changing staff, we're starting to see some of
that and and him being involved more. Now here comes
that injury and what what when did that happen? Was

(07:40):
there a certain play? Have moments when because I'm curious
to see, was that like, well he was on offense
or was it when he was playing on.

Speaker 7 (07:49):
Special teams like a nice on one of those kick.

Speaker 10 (07:53):
So maybe that was there. And injuries you can't really
prevent those. They're bound to happen at some point. So
you can't really not play a player because of the
thought that he might get injured. You have to play him.
So I am pro played the guy because he brings
a unique set of skills to the offense.

Speaker 8 (08:12):
And his speed.

Speaker 10 (08:14):
He has that speed that not many guys on offense have,
and the way that he started off training camp. He
has been super consistent in the way that he has
been playing. So that's the main reason why I wouldn't
take away from what Tolbert might bring into the game
while he's out.

Speaker 8 (08:32):
This can sound really simple. How about the guys that
he's battling with play better? You have no choice. He's
one of your better players. Go play a point. I mean,
if you, if you know Tolbert Mingo, who have Flinois whoever,
if you, if you really want to take if you
want to take Turpin off the field, how about the
guys around him play a little bit better, and and
and and.

Speaker 5 (08:52):
Do some of the roles, and take some of the
roles away.

Speaker 3 (08:55):
Can I add a name of it? Go ahead, Jayam Blue?

Speaker 9 (08:57):
If Jadam Blue was available before, you know, you got
a bursty, quick running guy.

Speaker 5 (09:01):
That's it. To me, it's pretty simple.

Speaker 8 (09:04):
And I think everybody's made really really good points about
the player, But to me, it's more about can I
afford to take him off the field? I got nobody
else making plays like this guy, so I have no choice.
I gotta play him. If somebody else steps up, I'd
be happy to cut the reps for him. If somebody's
giving me the same thing that that he's given me.

Speaker 6 (09:22):
All right, I think, I mean, it sounds like they
may have him back this week, and maybe you, yeah, yeah,
maybe you avoided a long term injury for him. But
I think that does bear watching as the season goes
on with this increased role, which, by the way, we
all agree you need to do it because he's such
a dynamic player. But the question still will always remain
can he stay healthy at this size with doing so

(09:44):
much more on an NFL field?

Speaker 7 (09:46):
It is a game of injuries.

Speaker 10 (09:47):
He's not small and bulky like musclely right like like that.
He's different then.

Speaker 6 (10:01):
Fast yeah him run all right, let's talk about real quick.
I want to talk real quick. This is a housekeeping
thing talking about the center position. Uh, obviously they're going
to go into this game with Brock Kaufman. He will
be probably presumably the starter for the next six to
eight weeks whatever it is. Uh that Cooper Bebe is
out and Cowboys did sign a center to the practice
squad and Wesley French. My question though, is heading into

(10:21):
this game and for the next few weeks, who do
you suspect is the backup to Hoffman in the event
he gets hurt during the game?

Speaker 5 (10:29):
J Bass?

Speaker 3 (10:30):
Oh, Mass, okay, Bass.

Speaker 5 (10:31):
Yeah, it's gonna be Bass. Yeah that Who did you
think it was?

Speaker 3 (10:35):
Chip? Is he here? Still?

Speaker 8 (10:37):
I believe in the practice squad man, I need to
do a better job of practice squad players.

Speaker 9 (10:42):
When we get into the seventies player range.

Speaker 5 (10:47):
But no, I I feel like the TJ.

Speaker 8 (10:49):
Bass might be This guy might be the guy that
that because he played some in the you know, during
training camp, and then he also got some work during
Uh remember that he and Hoffman were basically playing the
whole all three preseason games. They were playing the whole game,
and then Bass was getting some work at center.

Speaker 5 (11:07):
Hoppin would play guard.

Speaker 8 (11:08):
My gut feeling is that it would be it would
be Bass would be the center if he got down
to that point.

Speaker 6 (11:14):
All right, real quick, before we go into breaking down
the Chicago offense versus the Dallas defense, I'm gonna have
a few questions for you guys. I'm gonna do this
every week just to give people a general idea of
the team that we're gonna play. I'm gonna call this
segment inside Ops, and here's what we're gonna do. I
want you guys to tell me this first question about
the Bears. Which game is more of a realistic picture

(11:37):
of who they are. They lose close I mean, yeah,
they lose close game to Minnesota twenty seven to twenty
four or they get beat down by Detroit fifty twenty one.

Speaker 9 (11:46):
I think the common theme that you saw in both
those games that they're really good early and then they
kind of fade late. So I think both games kind
of make a little sense to you. The Giants, I mean,
the Vikings offense hasn't been great besides the handful of
touchdown is that they've thrown, and we just think of
the Lions as a better team. So I would say
that both those games kind of show you who the
Bears are. They're going to compete for a quarter and

(12:08):
a half and a great team will beat the hell
out of them later, and a good team can fight
to the end and kind of beat them later.

Speaker 8 (12:14):
So yeah, I think they're more probably, but the Lions
present a unique challenge for a lot of teams just
because of their offensive line, the skilled players, they have
the ability to run the football. And there was kind
of a grudge match game too. By the way, if
you look at Ben Johnson and you know and and
it kind of goes back to the Cowboys playing like
the Eagles. You had the whole offseason to prepare for

(12:34):
game one. Once you knew the schedule, you knew you
kind of threw everything you had into that game. The thing,
when we get into the Bears offense, there's problems that
they had in Week one that they still have in
Week two. That's that's the thing. I think that when
we get into it, you'll have a better understanding of
what kind of team they really really are.

Speaker 10 (12:54):
I mean looking at both weeks and yeah, fifty two points,
that's a lot to give up against the team. But
at the same time, after the Giants experience, don't underestimate
any other team in the NFL.

Speaker 5 (13:12):
But it's not gonna stop.

Speaker 10 (13:17):
You're asking, yeah, oh man, but this is a team
that's gonna They're gonna show up and put up a fight.
They're gonna go out there and try to compete with
what they have. So again, don't underestimate them. And I
think this is a game where the Cowboys need to
regardless of what these guys are about to present here

(13:39):
in their analysis, they still need to highly prepare to
go up against that team.

Speaker 6 (13:43):
Now, as we all know, head coach Ben Johnson was
the offensive coordinator for the Lions last year when they
came Dallas and beat Dallas in Arlington forty seven to nine. Yeah, right,
So so and I know we're gonna get into some
of the details offense, but just as a big picture,
how would you characterize his offense.

Speaker 9 (14:02):
I think they're still trying to figure things out now.
Like Ben Johnson and the Lions that we played last
year was like they're four years end of the offense there,
you know, they got it, you know down you know.
I think Ben and Caleb are still trying to figure
out how to, you know, work together with each other.
They got some great wide receivers and it seems like
the quarterback's only good with one of them. So I mean,

(14:25):
they're a team that's going to try to get on
the ball, fass get rid of the ball quickly, and
Caleb can't make throws downfield if he processes well and
it comes out. If they're on schedule, they're good to go.
But it's when they're not on schedule, and Caleb Williams
finds himself not on schedule all the time. So it's
kind of weird to see where they are. But that's
just what I got from so far.

Speaker 8 (14:43):
They play behind the sticks a ton. They're one of
the most penalized teams in the National football when it
comes to offensive penalties, so only I think them and
the Patriots are the ones that they get into a
lot of third and long situations. And but what makes
it very very dangerous, and we'll get into this sys
their quarterback has ability to make nothing or make something
out of nothing. There are a lot of times where

(15:04):
there's pressure and he's running. This is going to be
a very dangerous game from the aspect of him throwing
the ball off platform and him running with the football.
If you don't play discipline defense against this guy, this
could be a really, really difficult time to have to
I think he's made this quarterback better. If you ask
about the offense, what's interesting to me is they haven't

(15:27):
got DJ Moore going into this games like they have
in the past. Roman Dunes has been a really a
nice receiver for them. They've got the two tight ends
they're going to get in twelve personnel. I think he's
tried to bring a little bit of an element of
some toughness to it. Their offensive line has let him down,
But I think he's made the quarterback better if you
just look at overall metrics of the way the guy's
played so far.

Speaker 10 (15:47):
You mentioned the penalties and what I find interesting is
like at least these first two weeks. I mean, we've
seen a ton of penalties in the first two games,
but with the Cowboys, I think overall in general, they've
been more disciplined when it comes to getting penalties and penalized.
So it has allowed them to work in their favor

(16:09):
and them getting some of that in their benefit. So
maybe this is a week where we can see some
more of those and the Cowboys can actually benefit from that.

Speaker 6 (16:19):
No, dubllas, let's go ahead and take our first break.
When we come back, we're going to dive into the
Chicago office versus the Dallas defense with some specifics on

Speaker 5 (19:22):
What we got you want to start when we start
this thing? All right? You just getting an old guy.
Let the old guy.

Speaker 8 (19:29):
Start what they say age before b Man.

Speaker 5 (19:32):
Let's go for it, man, Let's go for it here.

Speaker 8 (19:34):
Okay, this game is going to hinge on a couple
of things for your offensively, for the for the Chicago Bears,
where I see problems, potential problems. For the Dallas Cowboys.
You're gonna get a ton of twelve personnel stuff. You
got to figure out how to deal with the tight ends.
The Titans really haven't been used though in a way
that you felt like a Ben Johnson offense would do it,

(19:56):
you know, throwing to him, getting them really involved. That
could change the week. You just got to you know,
with Dallas and having to play coverage. Can they do it?
Can they match up against these tight ends? I feel
like that they've got some really good tight ends. But
I I tell you where where to me? My biggest concern,
biggest concern is Calybse Williams's ability to throw off platform

(20:19):
and then to run if pressured. And VOTs is going
to tell you about this this Bears offensive line. He's
going to tell you these tackles are going to struggle.
There's specifically one tackle is going to struggle. But this
is very similar, you know to what you were kind
of dealing with last week with the Giants. You have
a couple of struggling offensive linemen. Do you take advantage that?

(20:40):
Can you get the passers? Can you affect the pocket?
But this quarterback's ability to run is going to be
a problem. And when he drops back and he feels
he will hold the ball. And so what that means
is in the secondary, you can't let coverage go. If
guys and they run a lot of deep routes and
they try and get the ball down the field. They've

(21:02):
had some success throw into some open receivers when they've
been able to get those routes down the field. But
you've got to stay with your guys this week, especially
throwing the ball. I don't think they're gonna be great
throwing or running the ball with swift, But I think
the way they're going to try and attack Dallas is
by they're going to think, hey, we can protect. We
saw the Giants protect, and we're gonna sit here and

(21:23):
see if you can cover routes down the field, the
crossing routes, the vertical routes. These are all things the
Bears that they do, and so the Cowboys have got
to be ready for that. You have to, like I say,
you cannot let guys go in this secondary because this
quarterback will find them. You know, he'll make some really
some outstanding throws. He'll miss some throws. But man, this

(21:44):
running aspect of it scares me to death because if
you look, just when he's taken off, like he's taken off,
say nine times, he's converted six first downs. Just think
about that. All of a sudden, you know you're running
around back there. You've got guys cover, and we saw
it in week one with Hurts. Lack of discipline, don't
play the edge, don't set the edge, don't have a

(22:05):
guy there available.

Speaker 5 (22:06):
We didn't.

Speaker 8 (22:06):
You're not really sure that they're gonna spy anybody here,
you know, in this game, because we didn't really see
it against Hurts. Maybe it's something that we see differently here.
But man, this guy's ability to run and to throw
off platform could be a problem for your football team.

Speaker 9 (22:20):
So, Brian, let me ask you this, because you have
a golden phone there. Yeah, and Flus is a good
friend of yours.

Speaker 5 (22:27):
I was until I started talking bad about his defense.

Speaker 3 (22:29):
It's all right. You wasn't wrong.

Speaker 5 (22:32):
He's not answering.

Speaker 9 (22:32):
I don't have his number around. But when you asked
him about quarterback running, he didn't. He didn't get back
to you right now, did not. Caleb Williams is a
guy that is gonna run the ball closer to what
Hurts did absolutely than what we saw from Russell Wilson
in like week one. Now, right, Russ didn't run against
us because he could throw the ball all over the placks.
I think Caleb what he's gonna And it's interesting, Brian,

(22:53):
because you would say that arm talent wise, Caleb got
a little more than Russ absolutely, and as far as
athlet us, he runs faster than Hurts like he's I
would say he's a more dynamic runner then Hurts. Is
a big muscle that's hard to tackle. You know, Williams
can run away from you. I think it's gonna come
down to diagnosing defense. Brian brought us.

Speaker 3 (23:13):
Now.

Speaker 9 (23:14):
I don't know if Flus wants to go out there
and run zone fifty nine out of fifty nine times again,
but I do think that Williams is a guy that
can get confused and kind of tripped up a little bit.
But the problem is, Brian, are you gonna spy him?
Because when he does get a little lost, his eyes
go down just like Hurts. And when his eyes go down,
one of two things happen. He's gonna run around and

(23:34):
try to find somebody down the field. He can really
hit you doing that, or he's just gonna run a
field and get some rushing.

Speaker 3 (23:40):
Yards for you.

Speaker 9 (23:40):
You can't win this game if Kayler Williams has seventy
rushing yards eighty rushing yards, because he can really beat
you down on like first downs, right, getting getting to
the first down, making these drives real long, getting your
defense real tired. I think that's somewhere that can really
beat the Cowboys down. So if I'm Brian brought As,
I'm talking to Flues, I'm telling the Flues, hey man,

(24:02):
these people are gonna run right as saying they learned
over the past two weeks, Sam Born Kate run with
a running quarterback, they might run right at him.

Speaker 3 (24:09):
And it's the fastest quarterback they got.

Speaker 9 (24:11):
So if I'm you know, Ben Johnson or something, I'm
designing runs for Kayler Williams because the Cowboys haven't shown
me that they can deal with quarterback run.

Speaker 5 (24:20):
Yeah, I think that's to me.

Speaker 8 (24:22):
That's the whole thing with about the discipline of the edge, too,
is another thing that we just you know, all of
a sudden, you're you know, it's Fowler, it's ez A Rokuo,
it's Sam Williams. These guys are crashing down inside, spinning inside,
and then there's nothing on the outside. I mean, Caleb
Williams has shown and the and the metrics will.

Speaker 5 (24:41):
Tell you this too.

Speaker 8 (24:42):
You know, he's about a sixty one percent passer against
against own coverage, but he's about as he's but he's
a fifty two excuse me, sixty eight percent passer against
cover two.

Speaker 5 (24:53):
So the split.

Speaker 8 (24:54):
Safeties, the two best things that he does throwing the
football is against.

Speaker 5 (25:00):
U that you go in and that's your game plan.

Speaker 8 (25:02):
You know, it's it's covered too, it's zone coverage, it's
all these things you're kind of I just I wonder
if Flus is going to get out of his comfort level.
And to me, this is a real good opportunity to
take Donovan Wilson and put him down there in the
box and let him deal with Cobat and the tight
ends leveling and those guys. I mean, they have it
shown that they're willing to throw the ball to these

(25:24):
guys a bunch. But these guys are capable of making
those types of plays.

Speaker 3 (25:27):
Brian brod Is.

Speaker 9 (25:28):
My name is Ben Johnson, Ben vash Lombardi Johnson. And
I see the Cowboy I'm just watching you. I see
the Cowboys win to go sign Clowney. Do I think
that clown is going to be one of the first
guys out there? How are the Cowboys gonna gonna, you know,
use their their rush ends. Who's gonna be the first
guy out there because based on.

Speaker 8 (25:44):
I'm the worst person asked this question. Because every rush
end I've talked about I've been wrong about.

Speaker 3 (25:49):
Based on the film I've been seeing Brian the ends
like the run up field.

Speaker 5 (25:52):
They don't know how this splay to get to play. Yeah.

Speaker 8 (25:54):
Sure, See that's the thing about it is when you
when you kind of feel like, oh, this could be
a really good game for Foaller, this could be you know,
I know last week we were talking about Marshawn Neelan. Oh,
here's a guy that plays the run really well. Here's
a guy that's disciplined. He can play the left side,
right side. Maybe one of the worst games he's played.
You know, they have yet to find a defensive end.
The one play that they made last week was the

(26:15):
difference in the game in my opinion, Sam Williams rush,
the pressure forced the interception.

Speaker 5 (26:20):
They need to get more of those types of plays.
They need to get more pressures. Okay, we're gonna get
into this offensive line.

Speaker 8 (26:26):
I'm gonna let you talk about these offensive linemen, you know,
and what you kind of think, because to me, there
are gonna be some opportunities. They gave up pressures, they
give up sacks. They're pretty good inside, but on the
tackles they're a little bit of a weaker unit. But
the quarterback's ability to run and to escape that, you know,
and can Dallas hold up?

Speaker 5 (26:45):
You know? The one thing if you're going to continue.

Speaker 8 (26:46):
To pass guys off, pass them off the guys that
are covering. Don't just pass them off to space and
allow Caleb Williams to have a free shot down the
field throwing the football to GUIDs in the middle of
the field. That's one thing I worry about, is Flu's
gonna get out of some things that he's completely comfortable with.
Is he going to be stubborn or is he going

(27:07):
to adjust? Much like the couple of guys that we've
seen the coordinators here before, dan Quinn adjusted, Mike Zimmer
adjusted well. Matt Everraflu suggested, I think that's gonna be
key in this game.

Speaker 7 (27:17):
Kind of throwing this question too, Brian.

Speaker 6 (27:19):
I obviously you've been around football for a very long time,
and there's kind of these two schools of thought. There's
the one school of thought is you get really good
at something and you can do it every single week
and it doesn't matter. You're so good and so adept
at doing it, it doesn't matter. There's another school of
thought that says being multiple is the answer because it
always strows the opponent off they don't know what to expect.

(27:41):
In this instance, the Cowboys have been very, very very
consistent with the fact that they are going to run
zone through the first two games of the season. They
haven't shown propensity yet to be really good at it.

Speaker 5 (27:52):
Though.

Speaker 6 (27:53):
Do you think this is a situation where the Cowboys
should stick to let's keep doing it, keep doing it,
keep doing it, because that'll get it guys more comfortable
with the think over time they will be capable of
being able to do this and will be.

Speaker 7 (28:04):
Really good at it.

Speaker 6 (28:05):
Or do you think they have to mix it up
from more from the standpoint again, specifically this week where
you're playing a younger quarterback, give him something different, because
when you go into a week, my assumption is, as
you're preparing for a game, if you know exactly what
the other team is going to.

Speaker 7 (28:19):
Do, it probably makes it a little easier to prepare.

Speaker 6 (28:23):
That being said, do you think this is a week
that they need to mix it up in order to
make sure that they just throw him off and give
him something different than maybe what they've shown the first
two games.

Speaker 8 (28:32):
I kind of feel like they need to mix some
things up. I just you know, I'm you watch the tape,
you watch some of the struggles. You watch what he
does against zone, you watch what he does against too deep.
You watch the struggles that he's had against single high safety.
You know, you watch these things. I mean, he is
not as good as a passer against single high well,
you know, Matt everflu showed he played a little bit
of cover three in the game last week. But they

(28:53):
gave up some big plays. But they gave up some
big plays because they like Hooker wasn't the single high safety,
it was. It was Donovan Wilson, and they gave up some
a couple of big shots down the field. But yeah,
I mean, I'm just gonna sit not a center and
just bang my head a wall against the wall and say, oh,
this is who we are. I think you have to
be able to get in and out of some coverage.

(29:15):
I think you had to get in and out some fronts.
I think you got to get in and out of
like like twist stunts and some blitzes. And you know,
if you you know to me, you know They got
in a situation last week where they're playing the cover
two where they're playing the old Tampa to the Monty
Kiff and Rod Marinelli where they think, you know, they
have a Mike linebacker in Samborne that could cover the
deep middle of the field. That's not Samborne's fault. That's like,

(29:37):
you know, that's kind of not knowing that he can
do that. That's thinking that he can. Maybe he saw
him do it in Chicago last year and he thought okay,
But he tried it also though with Murray as well,
and so that ended up being a big play they
had two times. So all of a sudden, you're doing
things and you come back to it and you think,
oh no, this is what we do. This is our
game plan. But you give up back to back huge
plays doing it. You know, you got to be a

(29:59):
little bit more. You can't be as rigid and like
when things aren't going great. You got to be able
to mix that thing up a little bit. And if
you go in there and just say, Okay, this is
what we're gonna do. Obviously, the Giants felt like that, Hell,
if you're gonna play a zone coverage one hundred percent
of the time, We're just gonna run vertical routes and
see if you can cover it. Dallas proved they couldn't
cover that. Dallas gets in the zone. I wouldn't be surprised.

(30:21):
Roma Dundas has been become a weapon down the field.
They're throwing the ball better down the field. They're throwing
the deep ball better down the field in Chicago than
they did last year.

Speaker 5 (30:30):
We ask all things that you can see.

Speaker 10 (30:32):
Let me ask you, guys this based on the results
or lack of what would you give if you had
to give a percentage, what percentage would you give to
scheme and then play your execution.

Speaker 9 (30:47):
I think Player is huge right now because Clark is
making everything easy for everybody and the three takes playing better.

Speaker 5 (30:54):
Your the run defense is better, Clark.

Speaker 9 (30:56):
Is much better, And I mean that's worth thinking about.

Speaker 5 (31:00):
And Saulving the Thomas like that.

Speaker 9 (31:03):
That's worth thinking about it because it could be scheme, like,
we don't know what it looks like to not have
Clark here, so it could be both. But percentage wise,
I would say, man, I would say it's just seventy
five maybe because because your your Detackle group is so
much better than we thought it was gonna be.

Speaker 7 (31:20):
Can I throw this in.

Speaker 6 (31:21):
I do think that it's kind of a mix and
depends on what you're talking about, right, because I look
at I look at the linebackers, I look at Donovan Wilson,
and I think this is a question of are they
fits for what you're asking them to do. On the
flip side of that, I look at some of the
big plays they gave up last week, and in a
couple it was probably three different plays I saw. There

(31:43):
were big plays for New York. I think two of
them were touchdowns, but Cowboys were in cover three. There
was three by one, which means you got three receivers
on one side, one and the other on the side
where you have the one receiver that cornerback essentially because
he's in cover three, care got a car that got
all the way down the field and in three instances
they hit big plays because that corner couldn't carry that

(32:06):
guy all the way down the field. That to me,
that's what you're paid to do as a cornerback. That's
not about scheme. That's like, you got this guy, if
he goes on a vertical route, you got to hold him.

Speaker 7 (32:16):
You gotta be able to cover him. And they didn't
do it.

Speaker 6 (32:18):
So in those instances, I look at it and I say,
that ain't about scheme, that's about players. I think it
really is about like what was the who is the
player and what was the situation. Some of the times
I think they put their players in bad positions because
it's maybe not something they're capable of doing. In other instances,
they should be capable of doing it and they just
didn't do it.

Speaker 8 (32:36):
Hey, you God blessed Donovan Wilson forgetting the interception right.
It was a poorly thrown ball. I mean he was
over there. I think if Russell Wilson would have had time,
that ball would have been to the sidelines and it
would probably been another big play. But you know, you're
you're not wrong about But to me, to me as
a coach and a coaching staff, you got to know
your personnel. You've got to know and maybe now they know.

(32:59):
Maybe they know now now if they get in if
we get into the Bears game and all of a
sudden we see Donovan Wilson playing against a single high safety.

Speaker 5 (33:06):
They didn't learn a lesson.

Speaker 8 (33:07):
That's a stubborn staff that is just saying no, this
is what we're gonna do.

Speaker 5 (33:11):
This is what we're gonna do. Get better. You know.

Speaker 8 (33:14):
No, to me, it's like, listen, we made a mistake.
It's like Chas Green. Jason Garrett stood there afterwards and said,
we made a mistake. We should have had a better
answer and a better plan for Chas Green should have
had it.

Speaker 5 (33:27):
You know.

Speaker 8 (33:27):
Yeah, we went through the seven sacks, but but we
we we got better because we did something different. We
took him out. You know, I'm not saying take Donovan
Wilson out. I'm just saying, play Donovan Wilson in the
spot and five sacks last year, Donald Wilson down around
the line of scrimmage. That just that that tells you
right there you want him near the ball, you don't

(33:48):
want him deep. And then and two, if you're gonna
allow these these receivers to have free runs at you
and you and you're not quick twitch, turn guys and run,
you know, Derek, you talk about carrying routes if you gotta,
if you're the guy on that side, how about a
little press, how about a jam, and how about run
with and try and hold things up. But you give
these receivers eight yard runs at these corners, nobody's gonna

(34:12):
cover them.

Speaker 7 (34:12):
Yeah, he's got a really fast Yeah.

Speaker 8 (34:14):
You know you're doing elite Neighbors and you're gonna give
him an eight yard run on digs and digs is
gonna say, you know, Neighbors made a hell of a
play that one.

Speaker 5 (34:24):
He went back and caught the ball. I mean, that's
just a great player right there.

Speaker 10 (34:28):
Well, clearly things need to improve for the defense. On
the defense, But what is the right thing to do
as a new coach coming into a team that you
already have part of, Like you didn't get a choice
to see like a bunch of your players, So at
that point do you continue to try to pressure and
make them fit.

Speaker 7 (34:46):
Into that But that's a great question.

Speaker 6 (34:54):
We're gonna take our break, come back, and you're gonna
give that great answer that it's just sitting on the
tip of your tongue.

I love I love this of it break all right,
So before the Break, Amber had a question and watch
he was about to kill himself.

Speaker 10 (38:15):
Forgot Okay, as a new coach with the staff, this
personnel that you're handed down to, what is the right
thing to do? Do you continue to try to fit
these players, use this players to fit what you're trying
to implement here, or do you then start changing up

(38:37):
your train of thought and your plan to make it
where it fits those players specifically.

Speaker 9 (38:43):
That's a fantastic way you worded it. Is what's the
right thing to do? And Vice says this the right
thing to do? Is do with damn been working? You
know you can you can put Donovan Wilson at one
high and it not worked, or you can blitz Donovan Wilson.

Speaker 3 (38:56):
You have evidence of that working.

Speaker 9 (38:58):
Do that. Do some more of that. You know, it
was the Eagles game. You rush for you drop everybody
else back. It ain't really necessarily work. Hey, if you
just happen to bring one extra character, just one more,
it can be this linebacker, that linebacker, that safety, Diggs Bland, whoever.
You just got so much more success than you did
than when you didn't. So what's the right thing to do,

(39:19):
ambarcar Si is do what?

Speaker 3 (39:21):
Do what works?

Speaker 5 (39:22):
Like.

Speaker 9 (39:22):
It's not like Flus hasn't made changes at all. It's
just that he'll go, Okay, well forty five out of
forty eight plays, they'll do something different.

Speaker 5 (39:29):
Them.

Speaker 9 (39:29):
Three plays look real good when you're doing plays, So
just think about them.

Speaker 8 (39:33):
Three cover six and they were Yeah, it completed one
pass for like negative yards.

Speaker 5 (39:37):
I think it was something different that did.

Speaker 8 (39:39):
I've just reminded that when I worked for the Cowboys
way back in the day, you know, in the personnel
side of things, that Bill Parcells told Mike Simmery sis, Mike,
I'm gonna let you call this your four.

Speaker 5 (39:48):
To three defense.

Speaker 8 (39:49):
You've been used to them what you call this for
another year, But we're gonna get personnel in here, and
you're gonna learn how to call three four defense. And
what did Mike zimber do? You learn how to call
three four defense? Next year and you had a top
in defense. We were a terrible football team, but the
defense was good because the way Mike Zimmer, Mike Zimmer
took it as a challenge. You know, dan Quinn came
in here. Dan Quinn has his beliefs, the Legion of Boom,

(40:10):
all that stuff, Bob bah blah blah blah, all that thing.
He realized he had pass rushers, he realized he had
man cover guys.

Speaker 5 (40:17):
What do he do?

Speaker 8 (40:17):
He adjusted kind of made his defense look a little
bit different, you know, Mike Zimmer. Last year, Mike Zimmer
getting his rear kicked right off the jump. Mike came
in and said, hey, I tried to do what they
were doing pretty well. It didn't work. Should have done
more what I was doing. Started doing that.

Speaker 5 (40:31):
What happened?

Speaker 8 (40:32):
They started playing better defense. You know, coaches, Matt will adjust.
Matt will adjust if Matt gets in there all of
a sudden again and we're coming back on Monday morning
and talking about a cowboy a game that was crazy,
you know, with defense not getting things done, and we say,
all of a sudden, it was all zone, and we
came in here and told you guys and gals that, hey,

(40:52):
this guy gets zone coverage, has this percentage, but against
single high he's this percentage, you know, and he struggles, then,
you know, shame on, shame. I'm on Matt ebra Flish
for doing that. I want to believe that they'll adjust here.
I don't want to believe that they're going to continue
to put guys like Donovan Wilson in single high or
cover two situations where you can't function well.

Speaker 9 (41:12):
If we go into this game, Brian, I'm just gonna
get back to this breakdown for two seconds.

Speaker 3 (41:16):
That's cool.

Speaker 9 (41:17):
If we go into this game, Let's say you get
past the first quarter and flues.

Speaker 8 (41:21):
By the way, the Bears will probably be up on
your seven nothing when the sink starts.

Speaker 7 (41:25):
The Bears first fifteen is pretty good.

Speaker 5 (41:27):
Yeah, that last two games they've been up seven nothing.

Speaker 9 (41:30):
Let's say that you flues rushes for drops everybody back.
Let's say he does that for like a quarter and
he's getting no pressure on Williams or anything like that.
How do you feel at that point, like do you go, man,
do we you know what I'm saying that that is
like how many more games does it?

Speaker 3 (41:48):
Does it take it?

Speaker 9 (41:48):
Because I'm you know, just watching watching the film and
I'm about to talk bad about the Bears. The the
left tackle Braxon Jones. Yeah you can, you can, you
can go. You can go going after him. The guys
in the middle solid, Tony Jackson and Dolman lives good
amongst them, but Darnell right on the right side, you
can get him. Other teams have success going to go

(42:08):
get Brax and Jones and this will be the game
Brex Jones pressure. But if you don't see the Cowboys
attacking Braxton Jones. What do we tell Shoddy at this point? Shotty,
do you need to be like like Parcels go tell
him that we need to do something?

Speaker 5 (42:22):
I think that to me, this is what is that?

Speaker 10 (42:24):
Something like going back to what you were returning to,
ask how many games until you do what exactly?

Speaker 9 (42:29):
How many games until you make the adjustment and go
maybe the past rush as is is not enough. Rushing
four as is not enough. Maybe if you had eleven
you can rush for it, but you don't. You got
thirteen whatever number Clowney wearing because it's gonna be some
weird but it's not adjustment.

Speaker 10 (42:45):
What does that an adjustment mean? Are you trying to
say bringing some more help from the outside or you're
trying to say, Hey, this is what we're gonna tell
Uiberflus what to do with the game plan.

Speaker 9 (42:55):
Now, IF's last name is Flus, take Donovan from way
up there and put him close of the way your
edges and linebackers are and let him be pressure got
for you ready Steward when he was down there blitzing,
getting sacks or whatever. Make that make that part of
the game. Kenny Murray is a fantastic downhill rush type
of guy. That was conversation about lea foul pass rush

(43:16):
Overshawn to come back at some point and we'll talk
about him. But you've got to do something. It din't
even gott to be difficult. It ain't got to be difficult.
Versus the Eagles. They just blitz Samborne to see what happens.
And a quarterback that doesn't process well, will drop his eyes.
Sam Boyd didn't even get there. Brian we broke down
the film. The pocket was still beautiful. But the idea

(43:40):
of okay, extra this person I didn't think was coming,
it's coming now. It at least speeds the clock up
and versus young quarterback changes like that matter.

Speaker 6 (43:48):
And they did that even more like they sent corners
in that game against Philadelphia. They didn't do that this
last game like they were there were there were things
they did in the first game that seemed like they
were trying to manufacture pressure, manufacture pressure a little bit
more than they did even in the second game, where
they you would think they probably needed to go a
little bit more to get pressure.

Speaker 8 (44:06):
Here's your hope this week too, that Matt Everflus spent
a year with that kid, that he knows what they're
good and bad about him.

Speaker 5 (44:12):
Is fact.

Speaker 8 (44:13):
You know that he could that he says, listen, I've
seen him in practice completely not reach stuff the right way.
But I my, I'm totally with you on this one.
Watch if I'm if I'm Jerry Jones as a general manager.
Though I walk in there and I say, Matt, listen,
we're you know, Okay, run defense, man, I'm doing it.
Thank you the run defense. I'm glad we got the

(44:34):
guy we did, But how can I help you? It's
Clowny going to be enough. And if he says, yeah,
Clowny's going to be enough, then I'm taking that as Okay,
Clowny's gonna be enough.

Speaker 5 (44:44):
Let's get this pass rush going again.

Speaker 9 (44:46):
Aiden Hudson got a lot of got a lot of
pressure on those guys. Brian, Yeah, we don't have Aiden Hudson,
we don't.

Speaker 3 (44:52):
Clark, and.

Speaker 5 (44:54):
Then Kenny Clark has done a hell of a job
for you.

Speaker 8 (44:56):
You don't have to worry about your run defense. You
really don't have to worry about run defense. But man,
if you're not gonna get pressure, if you're not gonna
get pressure and the secondary's playing like it is, that
could be a problem.

Speaker 5 (45:07):
Yep.

Speaker 6 (45:07):
All right, appreciate you guys. Going us back tomorrow. We'll
talk about the Cowboys offense, the bright spot versus.

Speaker 7 (45:13):
The offense and they're good, yeah, versus this Bears defense.

Speaker 6 (45:15):
We'll be back, uh till till then for Boche Lombardi
and Brian brought us in, Amugarciam Derek Eagleton. This has
been The Break live on Dallas Cowboys dot Com Radio.

Speaker 1 (45:23):
This has been a production of Dallascowboys dot Com and
the Dallas Cowboys Football Club.
