Speaker 6 (01:02):
Now?
Speaker 2 (01:02):
Yeah, we're talking about now you know the name? All
you want to talk about? All you want.
Speaker 7 (01:08):
I thought I was gonna get a letter in the
mail this morning. The first name I said yesterday was
Quinny will I thought somebody I was gonna call me
and be like, vit have you been tampering with Are
you on the phone with Jerry Jones?
Speaker 8 (01:19):
Did you know that.
Speaker 7 (01:20):
Quinny wig overo, boy, I hope you threw away your
whole rundown, Derek Z. We got we got one or
two things to talk about today, sir.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
Okay, before we get into our feelings.
Speaker 8 (01:32):
We don't need to hear Brian's thoughts.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
No, no, what I got to hear? What I do
need to hear what I do need to hear from hearing.
Speaker 7 (01:40):
I don't want no injury today.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
Is we want? I want to know.
Speaker 4 (01:46):
Give me a realistic scouting report on Quinn Williams. Tell
me what kind of player he is at this point
in his career and what Cowboys fans can expect to
see once he's on the field.
Speaker 7 (01:57):
Well, there's a foot race of the best defensive tackles
in that from Football League. It's Quinn, Jeffers Simmons, and
Chris Jones. They're all kind of running their race. He
those guys, them cats with them this man And then look, man,
I was listening to some people, and I was watching
some things, and you.
Speaker 6 (02:13):
Know you wouldn't say you didn't like what Archie said.
Speaker 7 (02:16):
Arg ain't gotta be film guy. He could be baseball guy.
He could be based on people know. Just some people
just sound like they watched a little less film than others.
Quinn Williams is a guy. He controls the line of scrimmage.
He destroys the line of scrimmage. The same one people
that moved back was when two people hit him, or
even three people hit him. There's film evidence. I've dropped it.
(02:37):
There's doubles, there's chips. He remains ten toes down. That's
not a metaphor. His feet don't move, and he's always
moving forward. He's a player that is so comfortable in
chaos because he's stronger than everybody else. So while you're
trying to chip and move and trap, his eyes are
in the backfield. Sometimes tackles get caught up in the
wrestling match that they're in and they missed the ball carrier.
This ain't Quinn Wigias. If you look at stuffs, I
(02:59):
wish Brian had had the exact number for me. But
just some guys on our team, please, some guys on
our team. They're around the three mark, they're around the
four or five mark. Quinn Wiediams got fourteen stuffs this
year by himself. He's a guy that could play all
around the line of scrimmage. He could play zero, one, two,
I three, four, eye wherever you want.
Speaker 8 (03:17):
To put him.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
By the way, he is tied for first NFL run
stuffs with fourteen. He also has twenty four run stops,
tied for first NFL among defensive tackle.
Speaker 7 (03:26):
He ain't playing exactly where you had issues at. He's
the and I'm not being hyperbolic, he's the best in
the league at that. So I know it's a lot
of people coming in it's all about, well, what about
his money? What about This is the one time I
don't care about the details.
Speaker 8 (03:41):
You have a guy, a dude, and.
Speaker 7 (03:43):
He automatically is the best player on your defense altogether.
So you lose a guy that's the best player on
your defense, and you gain the guy another spot and
he'll do a different thing for you. But he is
the best guy that you have right now, and he's
one of the best in the whole National Football League.
Not in his position, he's one of the best defenders
in the whole league. The trade was massive, and you
still get to Dreasky.
Speaker 9 (04:05):
You do huh my ears you.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
Steal get.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
You want to add it to that on the on
the from the Scotty report standpoint.
Speaker 6 (04:15):
I think that Vach has got him pretty pretty well nailed.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
And uh.
Speaker 6 (04:18):
The thing that I think that's what we need to do.
Speaker 5 (04:21):
Now is is think about though how they went about
and made to still this is cowboys being aggressive here.
This wasn't one of those things. And I was talking
to some people in the organization about it. Is I
was curious going in. Was this something that initially when
they were starting to talk about moving Michael Parsons, we
had heard some whispers that Quinn Williams was a guy
that they were very interested and then at the time
(04:43):
the Jets weren't interested in moving on from Quentin and Williams,
and so all of a sudden, then you have a
poor record, poor start, and then you move on from
Sauce Gardner and things like that. So you know, yeah,
this was something Dallas being a very proactive team when
it came to that, and I think that to me,
that's that's something that you got to kind of you
got to applaud them for. They were not going to
(05:04):
sit back and wait and see what things were going
to happen. They were going to be very proactive and
how they were going to go about this. And you know,
that's what you have to do if you have an
interest in a player, uh, you know, don't wait on it,
go get it. And you know, people say, well, why
do they do this maybe two weeks ago and maybe
make a trade. I just don't think the Jets were
committed to having a having the sale that they're having
(05:27):
right now. I think that there was a you know, now,
when when Sauce Gardener went for the two ones, it's like, Okay,
we are who we are and we're going to move
forward here. So give the Cowboys some credit for absolutely
doing this. The thing that one of my favorite things
about this Fotch and Ambar and Derek is the fact
that look at this, how it's going to set up
for you for this draft coming up, and Vouch whispered
(05:48):
it to you and mentioned it is that you look
at you're still picking in the first round. Man, you
got two picks. Now think about your second round pick
goes for Quinn Williams. I don't think you're going to
find a player in the second round better than Quentin Williams.
Then you look in the third round. I don't think
you're going to find a player better than George Pickens.
This thing is kind of setting up if they go
(06:08):
back and you and all of a sudden they do
something with George Pickens, whether it's a tag, a sign,
I would say Cowboy fans would be super happy if
you said a first round pick, another first round pick,
Quentin Williams and George Pickens.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
That's a hell of a draft. D I think that.
Speaker 5 (06:23):
I think that you're I think you're going in the
right direction that way.
Speaker 4 (06:27):
All right, let's talk about what happens as far as roles,
because now Cowboys have an embarrassment of riches. A defensive
tackle man you talk about Quinn Williams, Kenny Clark, olsa
Diggi Zua, and their four tackle is Solomon Thomas, who
still is a I think, a very useful player to
be able to do some good things.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
He's already done some good things for this team this year.
Speaker 9 (06:47):
He got hurt a little bit during this last game.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Who's Solomon Thomas?
Speaker 4 (06:52):
Yeah, I haven't I haven't heard that.
Speaker 10 (06:54):
He's out none, not out out, just like he got
a little banged up.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Yeah, this time of the year, everybody.
Speaker 10 (07:02):
I'm saying, you know how it is sometimes in the
roster year, you say.
Speaker 9 (07:07):
You can down.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
They got.
Speaker 9 (07:10):
Just this is what you givet.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
They have, they have a bye week. He'll be fine.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
But that being said, when you look at the floor,
when you look at the four defensive tackles, how do
you see them playing?
Speaker 2 (07:21):
Because I know yesterday in the press conference, Shotty.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
Said, Hey, we're gonna probably do a little bit more
five man fronts, which to me, I actually look at
that and I'm like, that's more of kind of a
three four type defense maybe because when you start thinking
about you can still have as a Roku on the outside,
who's coming along? I think very well, you could still
have Clowney on the outside, who's coming along very well?
You get over shown back in the middle. You just
traded for another linebacker in Logan Wilson. You start thinking
(07:45):
about this front seven. If they're gonna go with all
three of those guys, that could be a pretty formidable front.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
What do you guys think?
Speaker 6 (07:51):
Tell them about you me and tell them.
Speaker 8 (07:53):
Brian, I'm excited.
Speaker 2 (07:54):
He is exactly.
Speaker 7 (07:55):
I see the hand just me and me took that
from me right in the hand me and Brian did.
A podcast is more than breaking down some film. I
don't know if I can say where, but y'all know
where to find us. And I was basically kind of
trying to break down the idea, no problem. I was
trying to break down the idea that you have to
overthink this thing. First of all, even if they don't
(08:17):
change anything, and it's just an even front right four
man front four three like we just normally do normally
when Kenny Clark comes off the field, Mazi comes on
the field, now that'll look like okay, Well, if Quinnin
comes off the field, then Kenny Clark comes on the
field or whoever comes on the field, right, So even
if you keep it that way, it's fine, somebody just
take a break while somebody else whooping ass outside. But
(08:38):
in the event that you want to get everybody on
the field, you don't have to overthink the scheme because
a four to three over or four to three under
is almost the same thing as a three to four anyway.
You just may add another guy or two and y'all
can watch that video if y'all can find it, because
I can't tell y'all where it's at. But it's almost
the same thing anyway. So and luckily for us and
I have a theory about this. I think the Cowboys
(09:00):
know that Solomon Thomas is one of their better guys,
so I think the past two weeks they've tried to
find ways to get him on the field with Clark
and Osa. Even going back to Denver, they rolled out
this four to three looking look. This they'll call like
a five man front. It's a four to three looking look.
If I was a center and I called it three four,
But they have rolled this five man lookout and the
(09:22):
look was basically it was Kenny Clark at zero, which
is head up over the center, and then they'll have
like Clowney and B gap. That's kind of something that
you don't want, but that's what it was. Clowney wasn't
B gap, Solomon Thomas was in the other B gap,
Donovan was standing up outside, and Marris was a walk
up line back to the outside.
Speaker 8 (09:41):
It was basically a three four.
Speaker 7 (09:43):
If you ask Votch, you just take Clowney out of
B gap where big men go, and you stand him
up where Lea File is and just put Quinn Williams
where Clowney once was you have a three to four
that's ready to go and ready to roll out just
like that, and it's formidable. It's very much so formal.
That's fantastic point.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
Derek gaves.
Speaker 7 (10:01):
Let make another point. I don't think the Cowboys have
to change too much in terms of of their front
or if they want to. Hey, if you want to
make Osa more of an edgy type guy, he doesn't
have to be a wide nine.
Speaker 8 (10:12):
Just narrow him down to like a five. I think
there are.
Speaker 7 (10:15):
New advantages in football, right the analytic people will tell
you this to where we all know that you can
be a better defense if you can pass rush with
just for But now think about the idea that you
can stop the run with just four down, guys, think
about it like that. The Cowboys kind of found this
air quote solution. It was a temporary solution that you're
better versus the run when you load the box, but
(10:36):
your worst verse the pass. So then they also know
that if they muddy some looks, you could be decent
versus pastors. You kind of got you know, you know,
rush the passer a little bit, but you're better versus pass.
But teams would just opt to just run the ball
against that, right, So it's this game of chicken that
the Cowboys just can't win because they don't have personnel
to like deal with it. Now, as I was watching
this film, I was like, man, you can really take
(10:57):
Marque's bell out of the box right here. Because Quinn
and Kenny Clark and Osa and pick a guy, pick
a guy. You can now stop the run. In theory,
we got to see it happen. But in theory, you're
much better versus the run with just your base guys
than you were a little bit ago. So now you
don't have to overcompensate and load the box. So now
(11:17):
you could deal with the run and drop seven or
eight guys at the same time. Now this is massive,
And I'm not being hyperbodic because Quinn Williams one of
the best ones in the league of doing this.
Speaker 4 (11:27):
And you picked up a linebacker who is better in
zone coverage.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
Out there that when you start thinking about the two.
Speaker 4 (11:35):
Moves they may I personally believe massive that picking up
Quinn Williams actually made the sick up of Wilson even better.
Like I was like, okay, I was kind of luke
warm on Wilson. Let's see what he can bring. Maybe
he could, but I didn't know that he could make
an impact by himself. Adding quinnn Williams made him even
better because now, and this is a question I have
(11:56):
for you guys. Now, you always talk about how linebackers
are better when the defensive tackles in front of them
can eat up blocks. Quinn Williams is a block eater,
like he literally will take two or three guys and
that those guys will not get to the second level,
allowing your running back. I'm sorry your linebackers to run free.
How much do you think that's help to what the
linebackers have been doing to this point?
Speaker 5 (12:17):
Its gonna be well, yeah, to me, it's this gonna
sound terrible. I think your linebackers have played with so
much poor instincts that protection of them hasn't really mattered.
They will run themselves out of plays. They will run around,
run around blocks, They won't move. They play state. The
(12:40):
one thing about Logan Wilson is you could watch him play.
You could watch him, you could watch angles, you can
watch him play with depth, You could watch him play
with his eyes. The Cowboys have struggled with that Murray.
That's been a struggle. There's been times where he sees
it and goes, and then there's been other times where
he's so stationary he doesn't react. So it doesn't matter
(13:01):
if you're holding up blocks or not. The linebacking corps
has not done a good enough job. And then you
all can look at James as.
Speaker 6 (13:08):
Well, well, what's james biggest problem? James is a rookie.
Speaker 5 (13:11):
He you know this is you know when James does
see it when they ask him in Vach and I,
we've talked about this a bunch when we were on
the Draft show about James.
Speaker 6 (13:20):
Make him a forward player.
Speaker 5 (13:21):
We've seen him blitz, We've seen him kind of affect
the pocket that way.
Speaker 6 (13:25):
That's to his strength.
Speaker 5 (13:26):
But if you're asking him to be like really read
it and go, that's been a problem. But that's where
this linebacker corps we could talk about, Yeah, eat up blocks,
keep guys off, but if you're not going to react,
that doesn't matter. You're just you're you're just naturally taking
yourself out of the game.
Speaker 4 (13:43):
That way, we're going to take our first break when
we come back. I think this is probably the prevailing
question that exists right now for Cowboys Nation is Okay,
you've got a really good front now, or you think
you have a really good front, now, what does that
mean for the secondary? I'm talking about that when we
come back. This is Dallas Cowboy dot com regal mm hmm.

Go ahead, Derek, because I'm about to get at a
few words in this segment.

Got it all right, let's go. This segment is brought
to you about black chain dot Com. You know you're
following on your job.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
You're worried about that.
Speaker 7 (17:06):
Yeah, what do you think that the dynamic is bringing
Quinn and Weems here to this defense?
Speaker 9 (17:15):
Listen, listen, that is not what I want to ask you.
I asked the questions.
Speaker 10 (17:20):
Now, Okay, see see this is I'm starting with Brian
because Brian hasn't talked much to you're taking.
Speaker 9 (17:27):
Over their show today.
Speaker 10 (17:28):
No, he's done, Ryan, question for the table. All this
sounds great, and we'll get into how this affects the
secondary and all of that. But how quickly can you
actually expect change and improvement?
Speaker 9 (17:52):
Not change? Because this is the change, right, The trade
is the change.
Speaker 10 (17:56):
But as far as the improvement realistically, how quickly are
you expecting this defense to show some improvement with these
two players being added on? Also knowing that overshown it's
on his way back. There's also talks about Revel him
coming back. We haven't seen him just yet, but he
we're expecting good things from him. How quickly can this
(18:18):
defense change and showing improvement?
Speaker 5 (18:21):
Brian, you know what, I think that the one thing
that I'm going to kind of hang my hat on
is the quality of the player. We've talked about that
his coach, his former coach is here coaching your defensive
line right now too with coach Whitecotton.
Speaker 6 (18:35):
So anything to do technique wise or how to play it,
at least there's a communication between those two. It's like, listen,
he goes, Hey, think about it this way.
Speaker 5 (18:44):
Think about it. This is how we remember what we
do with the Jets. This is how it is. So
I think that to me, I think naturally, when players
get plugged in, the one thing that might hold them
back is just that what am I doing on this?
Speaker 6 (18:57):
You know?
Speaker 5 (18:58):
But with his former defensive line coach here working with him,
I think that when he went, you know, during this week,
it'll be hey, come in, let's meet, let's talk about
some of the things. This is the vision we have
for you. I think the player is going to show up.
It's just can you get all the other little nuances
that go with it. And I think the fact that
(19:19):
coach Whitecotton here is going to help him bridge that
gap a lot quicker.
Speaker 4 (19:23):
He has a translator, essentially, I guess, like coming over
to a new system or new scheme, new team, whatever,
he has somebody that can easily translate for him, Hey,
this is what they're saying when they say this.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
Oh yeah, that makes sense. Great, let's go. You know.
And I also.
Speaker 4 (19:37):
Believe when you're talking about a defensive tackle, there are
certain positions where I think there's an acclamation period of
kind of figuring things out. For defensive tackle, it's like
eat up blocks and shed your blocks to be able
to make a tackle when the runner's coming at you
like it's it's or attack this gap like it's not
a I don't think it's as complicated as say, when
(19:58):
you're playing corner cornerback in a zone coverage where you're
trying to flip between oh now we're in matchman versus
now in zone Like that's a little more complicated. I
don't think this is extremely complicated. I think this should
be something he can jump into pretty quickly. I do
think that the meshing of all the parts might take
a little longer because you now have a new linebacker,
(20:19):
you're probably gonna have over shown back, so you're gonna
have two new linebackers out there really kind of playing
in this game with the players that they're playing in
front of them, plus a new defensive tackle. I think
when you combine all those things, sometimes I think the
meshing of all those parts may take a little bit.
And I still want to give a little bit of
time for Overshowing to come back. He has to play
(20:39):
football in a year, right, so you got to give
some time for that. So I do think it's gonna
take a little bit for you see, for you to
see the overall impact to the entire defense. I do
think in the first game out, fans will be like, yeah, this.
Speaker 2 (20:53):
Quinn William just due.
Speaker 4 (20:54):
It is the truth, Like they gonna see moments of that.
There will be moments in that game against the Raiders
where he will show Cowboys fans why the Cowboys gave
up a first and the second round pick for him.
Speaker 8 (21:08):
May I, of course, let's.
Speaker 7 (21:14):
Let me tell you something an bar Garcia air mina Garcia.
I think I'm looking right at Fluce now because he's
kind of here, but he watching.
Speaker 8 (21:28):
I think this is.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
Uh requorded, so I can send it to he turns
on the show.
Speaker 8 (21:33):
I got flu numb. He just don't take us back.
Speaker 7 (21:36):
Hey man, fact this this is Flus is in charge
of the ceiling.
Speaker 6 (21:40):
Now.
Speaker 7 (21:41):
I think the floor automatically gets better because you limit
a lot of nonsense that that you were dealing with. Uh,
if you just simply erase stuff that you're horribly bad at,
like getting moved backwards on double teams, or not being
able to find ball carriers when you're engaged in these
blocking exchanges, or if you're aligning back or not standing
still or getting misdirected. It's the small things that are
(22:05):
gonna matter early. And I think immediately I don't want
to get over you know, I don't want to overdo
it here, but I do think automatically, just talent a
loan by your linebacker and your tackle, there is that
you at least can position yourself to be the twenty fifth,
twenty twenty fourth worst defense in the elite. But your
ceiling gets hired now because you have an elite, dude,
(22:27):
And that's where I think the time is, you know,
going to kind of kick in. You asked us earlier
prior to going to the break, what was this mean
for the secondary? I think if you can position people appropriately.
This depends on fluse, assuming that you can create nonsense
for the other team with a less amount of guys.
(22:48):
And what I mean by that is like, if you
can stop the run with four, then now you can
drop guys into more courage and that may help you
DB's out a little bit more to where now it's
not this big game of chicken anymore. I think the
Eagles game is a really good example of that, and
it's the same kind of personnel dudes relatively, but you know,
clog in the front and bring some pressure. Clog the front,
(23:09):
bring a little bit of pressure. Now, Jalen Hurst didn't
beat you in the air, he ran around a little bit.
Now as Flu's just put a spy out there and
just fix that issue. But I legitimately feel like, and
that's the first test. If you can stop the run
with less guys, then on any given down, you can
commit more to coverage and I think that'll help you
DB's a little bit.
Speaker 10 (23:26):
And that's where the nature of my question was going
to lead to a brilliant question m bar going back to,
because one of the things that we've talked about on
here is like, Okay, is it talent or is it coaching,
you know the are you liking just the talent?
Speaker 9 (23:44):
They definitely did so.
Speaker 5 (23:45):
That they identified that, they identified that it was a
talent problem.
Speaker 10 (23:49):
Well, let's see how now with him getting those ever flus,
I mean, getting those new players in here, how much
he's able to actually change because I think now for him,
if he's able to make a true change in difference
in this second part of the season, that's gonna determine
(24:10):
his future here with the Cowboys.
Speaker 7 (24:12):
Lucia get fired at halftime if the Raiders go out
there and put twenty four points size, that's how it feel.
Speaker 2 (24:17):
Well, there are no more excuses at this point.
Speaker 4 (24:19):
That's the point is you just got him a dude,
so there are no more excuses.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
It can't be the players.
Speaker 4 (24:26):
And that's why I was asking the question about the
secondary is I've always heard and Brian, you've worked in
this business for a long time, you always hear, Well,
what happens on the back end is the direct perflection
of what is or is not happening in the front seven.
Either you're having to dedicate more resources to stop the
run or you can't get a pass rush. The pass rush,
(24:47):
in my opinion, has gotten better here over the last
few weeks.
Speaker 2 (24:49):
Listen, last game you had five sacks.
Speaker 4 (24:51):
They are improving in that area because two players are
getting better at the right time, and so that part
of their game isn't improving. Now you add a guy
like like conn and Williams, and so my question is,
do you expect that those will solve That will solve
some of the problems. In addition to you're gonna get
your two starting safeties back. You think after this, after
(25:12):
this buy, all those things being considered, do you think
the secondary then improves from what we've seen so far
this year?
Speaker 9 (25:18):
People freaking out in the chat of the secondary.
Speaker 4 (25:21):
Bear by the way, we've seen the secondary not play
very well in a number of games this year. So
I think it's a fair criticism for Cowboys fans to
be like, yeah, that's all great.
Speaker 2 (25:33):
I would have loved it yesterday.
Speaker 4 (25:34):
In addition everything they did, and I know this is
being greedy, I would have loved the Cowboys still would
have gotten a safety or cornerback and and and added
to that, like, I think that's an area that still is.
Speaker 2 (25:44):
It worries me a little bit more. What do you
guys think?
Speaker 8 (25:47):
I think the cowboys.
Speaker 7 (25:49):
The past few weeks, they've they've kind of shown you
that they're moving in the right direction with their edge dudes.
First of all, let me say that Donovan's playing a
whole bunch. He's playing much better. Yeah, and you Devian
Clowney more and more. His feet are getting under him.
He's an old dude still, but his feet are getting
up under him. I think we need to limit a
lot of the rotation going on because now you're taking
your better dudes off the field to put guys aren't
(26:12):
as good out there, you know.
Speaker 9 (26:13):
I think are your better dudes right now?
Speaker 7 (26:15):
Clownyka clowning isrocoh you guys.
Speaker 8 (26:19):
And I don't want this to be like.
Speaker 7 (26:22):
Sam Williams gets an even amount as Donvin ezroko. I
want Donovan to get the load. And when he tied,
Sam comes in, donvid you straight and he go one
more play. Yeah, you're good enough, and you run your
ass right back out there, and that's what you run with.
So you keep your best edges out there for longer.
I can, actually, you can rotate your tackles a little
(26:42):
more if you want to, if you want to keep
that four man front, just to just to mix up
the looks. Rotate your tackles. I'm fine with Solomon out there.
I'm fine with either one of these guys. Quinn Osa.
I think now I want to see what the relationship
between Toya and perryon looks like. You can throw them
in the party too, maybe on games where you need
a bigger dude or to be Toyah. Maybe games one,
(27:03):
get out the quarterback more, it'll be it'll be winfree.
Rotate those guys. But I don't need to see a
whole bunch of movement at edge. I like how that's going,
and hopefully that pass rush along with Hey, you might
get some more pass rush from your tackle spot.
Speaker 2 (27:15):
Now, have you given up on my guy fifty three.
Speaker 3 (27:19):
James?
Speaker 4 (27:19):
Okay, you didn't mention him when you were talking about
the defensive end, So I just.
Speaker 2 (27:22):
Well, this is what this is what Fluca do.
Speaker 7 (27:25):
Fluci put James Houston on their best pass block of
the whole game. It was playing tunsling them Washington, right,
you got Tons along one side, who's like an all
world tackle type guy, and the other guys like, you know,
some other guy.
Speaker 6 (27:38):
It's a rookie from the rookie from Oregon.
Speaker 8 (27:40):
Connolly mouse of the house, right.
Speaker 7 (27:42):
I was like, man, it showuld be nice if you
will put James Hughes, your leading sack guy, over on
the rookie that has been giving up sacks all year
but the stand flues kept kept him on tons of
all day. That's not that's not a plus matchup for us.
And you know last week was about running. The Broncos
was about running football and you know, deep stuff, and
Brasil was just getting rid of ball so quick. James's
kind of had some down games or whatever. But I
(28:04):
think we can make the argument now that with some
more interior you know, work going on, and maybe they'll
hell James a little. But I haven't given up on
James Houston at all. I just don't want to present
him as an up here guy. I think James is
one of your still best still one of your best
pass rushes though, and I would love to get get
him involved. But I think our probably already needs to
be make sure teams aren't runn the ball thirty times
(28:24):
against us, and then when it's time to pass rush,
run your pass rush unit out there.
Speaker 2 (28:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (28:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (28:29):
The thing that you got to look forward to now
is and and hopefully the trade deadline is added. You
know you'll get some guys back from injury that.
Speaker 6 (28:36):
Will help you.
Speaker 5 (28:37):
But also to these key players because just looking ahead,
when you look at the when you look at offenses
that you're gonna have to deal with, the second best
offense in the league is the Detroit Lions. Then you've
got to face the uh the Kancie Chiefs. Philadelphia Eagles
are involved in this too. So now you've got some
games coming up where you have some of the top
offenses in the league. You're going to need to find
(28:58):
a way. And these are teams that do well running
the ball and throwing the football. So you're going to
need to find a way to be ready to go
and handle those games coming up.
Speaker 4 (29:07):
All right, we're going to take our final break. When
we come back. I have a question for you guys.
Cowboys have traditionally, or I shouldn't say really, I don't
say traditionally, but in the last I don't know, however
amount of time, it's become kind of known that they
don't really invest a lot in the defensive tackle position.
This is the best defensive tackle the Cowboys have had
since Blank. We'll answer that question when we come right.

It is the final segment of the Break Life from

talking about the defensive tackle position and the defense overall.
This is the best defensive tackle the Cowboys have had
on their rosters since.
Speaker 7 (32:21):
I think if David Irving would have had a handler
and he didn't get in trouble with the.
Speaker 4 (32:26):
And wanted to play football and wanted to put that
part of it, I would think even if he handlers
here and.
Speaker 8 (32:34):
The like the and the current weed rules and all that, like.
Speaker 5 (32:37):
We need to remove the one that was with him,
then maybe che you what man, Let me tell you.
Speaker 8 (32:43):
This, but David Irving for the Spurts that he was
playing dead.
Speaker 2 (32:46):
If I was.
Speaker 5 (32:47):
In the personal department and being the bachelor guy, you know,
he could have come live with me. I'd have got
him to work every day. Knowing how good that guy,
I would not if I would have picked him up.
Speaker 10 (32:58):
He can force someone to do something that they don't
truly want to do.
Speaker 9 (33:02):
You can do all you can facilitate.
Speaker 5 (33:04):
All you want, but at the end, I make sure
he lives with me, though, I'd make sure, Hey, we're
gonna all right, this is what we're gonna do tonight.
You know, we're gonna take care of these about just
to get him to the field. I mean that people
asked me this question about him one time. They said,
who's the one player that you're gonna be at the
lake and sitting on the dock and they're gonna ask,
who's the best player you ever saw? Who's the best player?
(33:25):
I might just be in East Texas, amb just right
down the street, but yeah, but who's the best player
you've ever seen? That you that that didn't turn out
to be the best player, And David Irban would be
that guy for me. That guy was incredible the type
of player that he was. And unfortunately, though yeah, you're right,
he you know, how how much do you really really
(33:45):
really want to play football? You know, and that's it's
a hard game when you don't want to play, you know.
I think Mozzie Smith's thinking about that right now too.
Speaker 4 (33:53):
And the fact that he was as good as he
was without really wanting to play like that, to me,
he was.
Speaker 6 (33:58):
As natural a player, so good, my god.
Speaker 7 (34:01):
The funniest thing about David ever though, and look this
is on the end that y'all can find. He did
an interview on the radio one on five.
Speaker 10 (34:08):
You were gonna say the other interview, No, the attorney
thing commercial that he did whatever.
Speaker 6 (34:16):
Another guy's name.
Speaker 2 (34:17):
We can't say it on Eric he's not a sponsor,
but commercial.
Speaker 7 (34:20):
But he was on with Ben in Skin at the time,
and it was like, yeah, man, we think about Jason
Gere and like David or just Fla said it, like, man,
you know something weird about ja, Like Jason actually wanted
me to work hard after practice and I didn't get it.
And I was like, I was like what He's like, Yeah,
I can't believe Jason really wanted me to put in
an extra work. I was like, coach, I'm good, I'm straight.
(34:40):
And that really let me know where David Iverth was
with it, and I was. I was a palled but
as good as he was without the extra right that dude.
Speaker 4 (34:47):
That tells you all you need to know about how
much talent, just god given talent he had.
Speaker 5 (34:52):
But even then, Quinn, one of the best I've ever
been around is lit Roy Glover around here, you know,
and that's man, We're really fortunate. I thought was really
really good too, But Leroy Glover was because yeah, I
was in pro personnel and it was. Man, it was
one of those times where we were, you know, we
didn't have a lot of talented players, we really didn't,
(35:13):
but we made a deal. We got Loroy Glover done,
and man, he played. He he lived up to everything
that we thought he was.
Speaker 2 (35:19):
And that wasn't a great defense, but he was.
Speaker 5 (35:21):
He well Zimber that remember, if you remember Zimmer did
have We were terrible on offense. We were the kind
of the opposite of how they are now like Zimmer had.
You know, he had that win he had that was
that the two thousand, well, two thousand and one, two
thousand and two, you know, and then Parcels came in
(35:41):
three I believe, but yeah, it was it was kind
of one of those things where Mike Zimber did a
really nice job. We were top ten defense, but we
were a thirty second ranked offense.
Speaker 6 (35:52):
At the time.
Speaker 2 (35:53):
Yeah, the team was five and eleven.
Speaker 6 (35:54):
Yeah, it was terrible, terrible football.
Speaker 2 (35:57):
Terrible terrible.
Speaker 4 (35:59):
No, Jay Ratlif, I think is right up there with them.
I would have said Leroy Glove and that's probably You could.
Speaker 5 (36:03):
Talk about the Super Bowl guys they've had too, And
I could go all the way back to Randy White
back back in the day when you start to talk
about the seventies Cowboys, you know, in the.
Speaker 6 (36:13):
Eighties Cowboys, that Hall of Famer, right, Hall of.
Speaker 5 (36:15):
Fame players, But this, this one is this one is
pretty darn significant.
Speaker 2 (36:20):
Is Twinn Williams on his way to Hall of Fame? Yeah?
I say so.
Speaker 12 (36:23):
I mean.
Speaker 8 (36:25):
Postseason success dictates a lot of that for ye.
Speaker 3 (36:27):
Of those guys.
Speaker 7 (36:28):
Yeah, if they go out there and and and do something,
and it ain't got to be this year, it could
be next year. You after they go out there and
do something, it'll be It'll be pretty clear. Like quinnin
he's one of the best ones in this generation we've
ever seen. I can make argument Chris Jones is like
an automatic Hall of Fame type because he's played in
what sw three Super Bowls. Yeah, so yeah, just just
get in the game and do something in there and
you'll get there.
Speaker 4 (36:49):
I mentioned a little earlier the Cowboys pass rush was
looked pretty good this last game. The interesting thing about
it is they actually blitzed a ton in that game.
It was the second highest splits percentage in the NFL
in Week nine at forty six percent. The got five
sacks out of it. My question for you guys, is
is the pass.
Speaker 6 (37:08):
Fortunately you start up five sacks too?
Speaker 2 (37:10):
Exactly?
Speaker 4 (37:11):
Is the pass rush finally starting to turn around? Is
it at a point now where you feel like you're
getting the kind of pass rush that you would have
maybe at night i'd be as great as it was
with Michael Parsons, But you're getting to a point where
your pass rush is good enough to make your defense
good enough to be able to win ball game.
Speaker 7 (37:27):
It's turned around, but I don't think that makes it adequate.
I would I would need because you were so terrible
just a little bit ago. I would need to see
more of it. But I do think they're on the
right track though. I think bringing pressure helps and like
I said, lessening that rotation of edge guys really matters
honestly too. These these quarterbacks kind of know how to
deal with edge pressure. I think bringing some nonsense and
(37:48):
the MILA is going to help too, because now you
got guys stepping back and you know, rolling around, So
now you get the miscellaneous residual sacks from the outside
guys because there's so much inside nonsense.
Speaker 5 (37:57):
Yeah yeah, I think to me, but it's and it's
so hard to watch when it's third and twelve and
you get pressure and then it's a fourteen yard game. Yeah,
I mean, just that that is that is is that's
the kick and then you know what right there? I mean,
it's you know the fact. And I felt like that
Dallas was probably in this game as you saw the pressures,
but they were a tig late on arriving. They were there,
(38:21):
but they just ball out, you know. I think in
this game their quarterback handled the pressure wasn't quick where
your quarterback faced quick pressure, and I think that was
the difference where Dak for you know, for all the
other weeks he's playing, he was able to kind of
avoid the pressures. This past week, he couldn't it was.
(38:42):
It happened so quick on him that that he couldn't
make that. Whereas their quarterback, I think handled a little
bit better than you did.
Speaker 9 (38:49):
I wish you would have made these trades like two
weeks ago. Like two weeks ago.
Speaker 10 (38:56):
The thing is, I feel and I'm glad about the
trade and everything, and I'm looking forward to the changes
and how this defense looks.
Speaker 9 (39:03):
Now with those guys added to it.
Speaker 10 (39:06):
But at the same time, it's like, why are we
always doing things so late? And I get the nature
of it, and I get the time that's probably we're
getting to get rid of those guys at that point, yes,
because you gotta wait and see how okay is this
The Jets.
Speaker 4 (39:21):
They're waving the white flag now. They I don't think
two weeks ago they were ready to wave the white flag.
Speaker 10 (39:25):
And I really don't I get it. But at the
same time, trust me, I understand it.
Speaker 9 (39:31):
But it just feels like we're always kind of behind,
like on everything.
Speaker 5 (39:37):
Well, this they honestly tried to make this trade the
week one of the NFL season, and the Jets weren't ready.
Speaker 3 (39:44):
To do it.
Speaker 5 (39:45):
I think I think Quentin Williams and the Jets were
the target, and the Jets didn't have the cap space,
and now they do. They just started, you know, once
once they determined that that sauce Gardener, I mean that
that was surprising.
Speaker 6 (39:57):
Sauce Gardner's good player, yeah, really good.
Speaker 1 (40:00):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (40:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (40:01):
And the two ones, I mean that's Chris Ballard there
in Indianapolis is like, you know, he's he's like thinking, well,
I might not be round here very much, and I
might need to do this right now because everyone I've
ever known, it's funny less Snead who called me one
time at the Rams and goes, man, I'm about to
get fired. And then what does less sneed do? He
wins a super Bowl, you know, and then now he's
got five year extension. A guy Jason Light down in Tampa,
(40:23):
same way, I'm about to get fired, and then all
of a sudden they make a trade to get Tom
Brady and now he's got a five year extension. I
think Chris Ballard's thinking, man, I've got to you know,
if I give up two ones and it doesn't work,
it's somebody else's problem. It's not my problem. I'm gonna
try and go and get a five year extension. Getting
this team to the Super Bowl, and he might have
a team with Daniel Jones. Believing it or not, that's
(40:43):
playing in that direction.
Speaker 7 (40:44):
Also too, even if you don't get the desire results
this year. Quinny Williams is twenty seven years old, you
know what I mean, Like that dude should be he
should retire Cowboy if you're asking me. He's one of
those kind of guys like, don't make the same stations
my go guy, Wills. He said is don't make the
same mistake that you made with Michael. You know what
I'm saying, Like y'all fall out and now you're not
Michael should have retired to Cowboy. Keep it a bucket.
(41:06):
He's one of those types of guys. You know what
I mean, Money money aside. I don't think we should
deal just mess around with money with the best players
in the world. I think Quinn Willis is one of
the best players in the world. So if you got
to let go of some other people to keep a
twenty seven year old, best defensive tackling the league type guy,
then just keep that guy. So this ain't even about
this year. It's about moving forward, even past Dax wind though.
(41:26):
If you think Dak got another three or four years,
Quinn should be still good around at times.
Speaker 2 (41:30):
Another That's the thing you gotta think about it.
Speaker 4 (41:31):
I've heard people say, well, you know, Quinn Williams about
to be twenty eight. I'm like, defensive tackle is one
of the positions in NFL. Will you see the best
defensive tackles in the league tend to be a little older.
They can get into their thirties and still be very
productive at the defensive tackle position. So I have no
problem with looking at Quinn Williams as a four year
guy where you could still get really good production out
of him. I have no reason to believe you can't.
(41:53):
So if that's the case in the NFL terms, four
years is a lifetime, take that guy and you can
use him for that time.
Speaker 2 (42:00):
You may end up doing another deal.
Speaker 4 (42:01):
You may end up just restructuring the deal you already have,
just give a little more.
Speaker 2 (42:04):
A few more years to it.
Speaker 4 (42:05):
But I think you're gonna get everything you need out
of him as long as they the handle situation.
Speaker 5 (42:09):
I would love them to take the twenty million dollars
a saving on Michael Person's contract and try and get
that wide receiver done then too.
Speaker 4 (42:15):
Yeah, absolutely, absolutely and that's ultimately the way I look
at this is how you use the money. Because I
know a lot of people are talking about the picks.
I'm not the picks and the money and how you
use both, to me will dictate the success of that
trade versus it just being what did you do with
the two first round?
Speaker 7 (42:31):
There are some linebackers, some edges, both safeties and the
right tack. I'ma start looking at their money real soon
to see where I can start making some money, to
figure out what to do with Quinn's money moving forward.
If you want to possibly take a look at Kenny's
money next year, moving around a little bit, I'm with that.
But the wide receiver, George Piggins, and we know his agent,
he're gonna mess around. Let's just go ahead and put
(42:52):
the bread in the house right now and get rid
of for it, all right.
Speaker 4 (42:55):
I appreciate you, guys, Jo honest. We'll be back next
two next Monday. Next Monday, we are gonna take a
couple of days here to regroup, and we'll be back
on Monday.
Speaker 2 (43:03):
We'll talk a little about the NFL.
Speaker 4 (43:04):
I want to get into some conversations about what we
see this weekend as we get to chill and watch
some football like you guys. So we'll talk about that
on Monday till then.
Speaker 2 (43:11):
For watch on Body.
Speaker 10 (43:13):
Hold on for those listening live, stay tuned, don't go
too far because we're about to have a press conference
with mister Quinnon Williams.
Speaker 2 (43:22):
So I'm to let me check and see. Now you
can go.
Speaker 9 (43:27):
To a score, so I got.
Speaker 10 (43:31):
You can.
Speaker 8 (43:31):
You can go up there, Derek. But I'm going by.
Speaker 2 (43:35):
The way, if you even have a question, you can
ask a question.
Speaker 9 (43:41):
You can.
Speaker 2 (43:44):
Quiver and everything wouldn't have bits.
Speaker 8 (43:47):
Gonna be like who's this dude?
Speaker 10 (43:49):
But not about to happen live what noon? Yeah, I
think so stay tuned and look it up.
Speaker 2 (43:55):
