Speaker 4 (00:17):
Yes?

Speaker 3 (00:18):
Are you ready for a break?

Speaker 4 (00:20):
Absolutely?

Speaker 3 (00:20):
Ready for a break?

Speaker 5 (00:23):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (00:23):
And so much for that.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
It's time for the Break on Dallas Cowboys dot Com
with Mbar Garcia, Brian brought Us, Votch Lombardi and Derek Eagleton.

Speaker 5 (00:39):
It is Tuesday, September twenty third, twenty twenty five, Season
twenty one, episode number fourty three. Welcome to the latest
edition Off the Requiel, Live from the SWBC Mortgage Studios
at the Star, presented by LG. LG's the world's number
one OLED TV brand for eleven years in counting. See
why at LG dot com Ford slash old ebo to

(01:00):
the show. Got a lot we got to get into today.
A couple injuries got added to insult this yesterday, and man,
I don't know how.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
I feel about these.

Speaker 5 (01:10):
We already knew about Ceedee Lamb and his high ankle sprain.
We're going to take some time and later on in
this segment to talk a little bit more about CD
and what this injury means to the Cowboys. But I
want to start first with injury that I just found
out about yesterday, Tyler Booker high ankle sprain. I saw
him after the game in the locker room. I didn't

(01:32):
notice anything.

Speaker 6 (01:33):
To twenty seven in the fourth Yeah, I went back
and saw that got rolled up on. Yeah, exactly, and
then talking to people in the organization about it, it
was sometimes you can walk these things off and play
and continue to play, which he did, and then the
next day you can't walk. And that's what happened with
here that he fought through it at the you know,
and end went back in the locker room, and then

(01:54):
they flew home, you guys flew home and Monday morning
it just wasn't able to go. So that's but he
got he definitely got rolled up on and managed to
just battle through. A matter of fact, got rolled up again.
Actually a little bit later there was a play where
he got hit again on it maybe hurt him a
little bit more. But that's it was very very late

(02:15):
two twenty seven I think left in the game.

Speaker 5 (02:17):
Have we found anything about the timing. I've heard a
lot of different things. I think the timings they want
to get between him and CD.

Speaker 7 (02:23):
Yeah, usually with.

Speaker 5 (02:24):
A high ankle spring. You kind of look, you still
know several weeks.

Speaker 8 (02:28):
But the problem is not the problem. Maybe the blessing
here is that you're dealing with two guys that are
extremely tough. And when you talk about Lamb played with
a bad shoulder the whole year, you know, and he
just kept fighting through. And you know, these guys they
know how to rehab, and they know how to get back,
and they want to be back, and they realize how
important they are to the organization.

Speaker 7 (02:47):
So I didn't you.

Speaker 8 (02:48):
Know, sometimes you get, oh it's four to six weeks.
Oh it's six to eight weeks. These two guys, I
never got one moment of how long they would be off,
because these guys will fight through things that that that
normal people won't fight through.

Speaker 7 (03:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (03:01):
Jerry mentioned this morning on one oh five dot three
The Fan when he's on with Sean and RJ and Bobby, Uh,
I got to give Bobby a little up to Bobby
gets never gets, but anyway he does the h he
mentioned on on that show that you know, he was like,
a lot of this has to do with pain tolerance,
at least at the very beginning of the rehab. Because
as what I envisioned him saying, is as you're kind

(03:24):
of starting that rehab, it doesn't feel good and uh
and so you kind of have to be willing to
push through that a little bit to get better faster.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
But as you said, Brian, he's a tough guys.

Speaker 5 (03:34):
The chances that maybe they can't come back, and they
also said for both of them, they weren't as bad
as you you could see with some high ankle sprain,
So maybe all those things being considered, maybe they're on
the front end of the amount of time it typically
takes to come back.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
That being said, who replaces Booker?

Speaker 8 (03:53):
That was my first question for you guys, and the
questions today is uh and and I'll start with you
watched on this one. How do you navigate not having
Booker in that lineup? I think I have an idea
what I would do. I'm interested to what my guys
here would say.

Speaker 9 (04:10):
The one thing I don't want to lose, Brian is
is power in the middle. You know, if you're going
to lose a powerful guy, the next thing I would
do is find the next possible powerful guy that'll fit
right in and do that. And it was Rob Jones,
but he got hurt and Campbell whatnot right and shouts
out to the Cowboys.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
They covered their rear.

Speaker 9 (04:28):
Brian Ross, you always say, hey, you know you you know,
personnel guys. You got to get multiple these guys. So
when you're saying, hey, why the Cowboys, you know, signing
so many of these veteran offensive linemen. They're drafting these guys,
they got so many of them because things like this happen.
You know, luckily for us just knock on some woods somewhere.
That's not one of those long injuries. So now you
just got to like survive for you know, two three
four weeks have a long.

Speaker 7 (04:48):
It may be.

Speaker 9 (04:49):
I'm you know, I've been hearing TJ. Bass as you know,
people's first people's first name.

Speaker 8 (04:55):
Think he played the most in the preseason, him and
Hopp and they were they were they played every game
in the preseason together, I mean the majority of these games.

Speaker 7 (05:04):
Yeah, they played together.

Speaker 9 (05:05):
Yeah, but just you know, there's this one player just
kind of just pops up and he just hangs around and.

Speaker 7 (05:10):
Hey when did he And it is Nate Thomas.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
You know, Nate.

Speaker 9 (05:14):
Nate Thomas was drafted as a guard type character and
then he shows up as a right tackle one day's day,
so he can pretty much, I would assume, play everything,
but but center. You know, the the hardest job is
going side to side, not from guard to tackle.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
Tackle to guard.

Speaker 9 (05:29):
That's decently, you know, easier than you know going side
to side. But if he's shown me that he could
play right tackle in which in camp that's what he
was really early, I have no doubt in my mind
that he's built that way. Kind of heavy feet are decent,
you know, you know, for for for guard, but most
importantly Brian, he's powerful, powerful, So if you want to
keep brock Hoffman comfortable, take Nate Thomas, put him at

(05:49):
right guard and go boogie.

Speaker 7 (05:51):
Yeah.

Speaker 10 (05:51):
I think with this coaching staff, and based on on
everything that Brian Schottenheimer, how he's had, how he has
handled the roster, I he's been giving people's jobs based
on merit, Like if you've been practicing well, if you've
been doing your your your assignments and your studies and
doing everything that you need to do, he's gonna give

(06:13):
you that spotlight. He's gonna give you the time to
play on the field and earn that spot So he
basically what I'm trying to say they're gonna go with
whichever one because to me, the initial dot is okay.
T J. Bass, he has the most experience in this offense.
But Nate Thomas, he's another. He's another guy who has

(06:33):
shown you some strength there as well. So, but I
trust Brian Schottenheimer and the coaches to go with whoever
is currently performing the best during practices.

Speaker 9 (06:46):
Also too, there's another you know, there's another saddest thing.
You know, we always talk about years left contract. You know,
Hoffman got got paid, So Hoffman is gonna be here
a couple more years. This might be Basses last year.
Maybe we at least no time has got two more.
So I think they're gonna go with the guy that's
probably they could possibly I just work here. I don't
work over there or upstairs or anything else. I think

(07:08):
they're gonna go with the guy that is going to
be here longer. And look, whenever Stephen Jones gets on
the radio and says your name, I think that means something.
You can you know, you know Jerry Jones. You know, hey,
Jerry said something. You know he may lie to you
a little bit. Stephen Jones is going to be straight
up and down with you, and he said Nate Tom
He said, hey, y'all better watch out because Nate's on it.

(07:28):
I asked the question about that Nat is hanging around
native is ready to take the next step, and I
think Nate can do it, so I think he's got
to look.

Speaker 7 (07:34):
Out for Derek.

Speaker 8 (07:35):
How much do we need to know about Trevor Keegan? See,
that's what I'm saying. Here's Trevor Keagan. It's been an
active three weeks in a row. And to be honest
with you, you know your your scout, lets you down here.
I need to go look at Trevor Keegan and see
what we have there because he might be a guy
that's in the mix. I agree with you, I agree
with thoughts, but Derek, go ahead, please no, I agree.

Speaker 5 (07:55):
I was actually gonna go down the route of is
there a person on this team because I don't know
enough about Wesley French, who they even brought into their
practice squad. I want to know is there a center
on this team, a backup center that the difference between
hen Hoffman at center is slight and the Hoffman can
maybe move to guard where I think Hoffman may be

(08:18):
a better fit for you in this situation where you
need to replace someone.

Speaker 2 (08:22):
That would be my thought.

Speaker 5 (08:23):
Now I agree, I think Nate Thomas, I'll just go
back to training camp during that time when when you
had to put him at left tackle, I thought he.

Speaker 2 (08:32):
Performed pretty well.

Speaker 5 (08:33):
He did, and so if he is that caliber player
where you can put him, literally you can put him
at any position except for center, and he's gonna give
me that same quality that I don't even think twice
I plug him right in at right guard and I say,
let's just role now. Again, I don't know if I
haven't really seen him play guard. I've seen him play tackle.
At tackle, he did fine. But if that's not the case,

(08:54):
then I would also look at him and I think
it should be thought about, like, what are the other
centers that you have available to you. Is it a
possibility to maybe you move Goffman out to guard and
put somebody else in at the center.

Speaker 3 (09:04):
I don't know, could be.

Speaker 9 (09:05):
But the only thing that will make me not think
that is that there's a lot of mental responsibility for center.
So you don't want to bring in brand new character.
The probably hasn't been here. Ay Hoffin's been here two years,
three years with shotting the guy, so he knows the
operation cadence and all those things and that matters most
for a center. Plus, Cowboys kind of showed you how
they how they feel about Brock at at guard. When
Brock was supposed to be the guard. They spent the

(09:27):
first round pick on the guard. So maybe though, yeah,
but he's a backup though, let's be backup.

Speaker 5 (09:31):
Like they just think he's not gonna be a starter,
and that's fair, but they also paid him to be
a backup, so you know.

Speaker 8 (09:37):
Yeah, I just I mean, to me, the first thing
I thought it was was Nate Thomas just because the power.
To me, yeah, just the power. I think you're absolutely
right about that. The one thing that Dallas has had
some really good success at is running the football with
Booker and Steel. You know, we kind of think of
Steal is like and you know, it's like whoa sometimes

(10:00):
as a pass blocker, but as a run blocker. The
double teams that he's able to get, I mean, there
is some push that they're able to get on that
front side when they run behind those guys. So to me,
I was thinking, Okay, can Bass and Steal give me
the same thing that maybe, uh, you know, the big
tackle Thomas can and and you know, give me that

(10:22):
push that you get with Booker's That's the first thing
that came on my mind is how do we how
do we make sure we take care of those defensive
tackles in these games.

Speaker 5 (10:31):
Yeah, when I went back and watched the tape from
this last game, that was so apparent to me how
good this team is in that game and even the
game before running the ball, particularly how well this offensive
line is blocking in the run game like they are
really good. And it's crazy to me that most of
the time when I saw that there were problems in
the run game, in the blocking, it typically was a

(10:52):
tight ends or the fullback that was usually where you
had a breakdown more often than not. The only thing
I can say about the offensive line where they were
at moments they didn't get to the second level as
quickly as you'd want him to get.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
There, But by and large, they move bodies.

Speaker 5 (11:05):
And that's the part I'm a little not just concerned,
but I hate for Booker that he was progressing in
that way, still had a long way to go, I
think from the standpoint of a pass blocker, but in
the run game, he moves bodies, and I hate to
see it kind of get short changed a little bit
here for a few weeks where he won't be able
to be out there continuing to develop both as a

(11:25):
run blocker and a pass blocker. And I wonder how
much that will mean to this team when it comes
to their ability to run the ball, because I think
that's another bright spot for this team so far this year.

Speaker 10 (11:33):
I'm freaking out, I am, I am, because you mentioned
looking at the first two weeks, this offensive line was
protecting the passer very well. There were moments where Dak
you know, he got the pressure there, but by and large,
they were doing really nice job. And also, when you
talk about the run game, we know that all that

(11:55):
is mainly attributed to what the offensive line is doing
for your running back. So when you see the kind
of results you were starting to have in the first
weeks of the season, you were getting excited because you
can you only think, okay, you can only progress from there,
knowing that they had not play a real football game
and all that it was the start of the season.

(12:16):
And now you have two offensive linemen that are out
of the mix from your starters, and now you got
Brack Hoffman, and then now you're trying to figure out, Okay,
what are you gonna do with the other position? Who
are you gonna go with? But the point here is
you're moving parts. And we talk about this forever. You
know how important is to have a cohesive line that

(12:39):
they all work together all the time. So I am
a little worried about just having another body that's out
of there and now you're having to replace that and
seeing how that all kind of tries to glue itself
together again.

Speaker 5 (12:52):
Yeah, I think that's all fair. But would I would
throw this question to you guys. As I watched it,
I didn't really see an appreciate difference between how Hoffman
played this last week and how BB had played the
first two weeks. I do think they both gave up
some pressures, and Hoffman.

Speaker 2 (13:10):
Is a different dude.

Speaker 5 (13:11):
Is a different dude, But but I didn't see a
big difference, and I would be interested to see if
you guys saw a big difference between those two in
this Looking at what Hawfin did this week versus what
BB had done in the first two.

Speaker 9 (13:23):
Weeks, I think the biggest difference is when you put
in context of them moving Dexter Lawrence versus moving the
guys that had to move this week.

Speaker 3 (13:30):
I think that's the biggest difference.

Speaker 7 (13:32):
Yeah, I agree with that.

Speaker 2 (13:33):
It was who they were playing.

Speaker 3 (13:34):
They playing, it was who they're playing.

Speaker 2 (13:35):
All right, let's take our first break.

All right, Brian, let's go inside your brain? What you
got up there?

Speaker 7 (16:31):
Yeah, I've got I've got you.

Speaker 12 (16:33):
I don't want to know. Please take me out.

Speaker 7 (16:36):
And I'll start with you.

Speaker 16 (16:37):
AG.

Speaker 7 (16:38):
Oh God, I'll start with you AG on this one.

Speaker 8 (16:43):
Do you still have flashbacks at the playoff loss to
Green Bay?

Speaker 7 (16:47):
And are you worried that it might happen again.

Speaker 12 (16:51):
I was talking to the Eric about this yesterday. We
were talking about.

Speaker 10 (16:55):
This because I'm sitting at lunch all this sudden I
see a player driving by in a scooter and I
turn around, my who's that? He's wearing a hoodie, mister
CD Lamb with a scooter in his boot on. I'm like, oh,
I won't cuss on here, but Josh Rodriguez knows exactly

(17:16):
what I said, and I'm just like, oh my gosh.
I walk up upstairs, walk to the Eric's office. I'm like,
did you see about CD? Did you hear about this?
And he's like yeah. So we start talking. I'm like, man,
what does this mean for the rest of the season.
When you look at all the struggles that you've that
you currently have, you have so many different things that

(17:36):
are currently happening, and then you lose key players and
that just adds on to it and it just makes
it worse. And then we started talking about different teams
and going back to that season that was the most
I don't want to say.

Speaker 12 (17:52):
Perfect, but you had the best team.

Speaker 7 (17:56):
That you could have healthy health.

Speaker 10 (18:01):
To make it further into the playoffs, and somehow you
screwed that up.

Speaker 12 (18:08):
I don't know what.

Speaker 10 (18:08):
I still don't know what happened in that game. So yes, Brian,
I do have flashbacks because I know how good I
knew the potential of that team, and you missed the
chance to win that game against Green Bay. You had
everything working to your advantage and it got away from you.

(18:29):
So now we're sitting here just trying to, you know,
make up for what you currently don't have. And yeah,
I constantly think about that game, and I do have
bad flashbacks.

Speaker 5 (18:41):
Yeah, Derek, you know it's funny when you said that,
I was like, which Green Bay game we got? The
Dead's non catch we got when Aaron Rodgers was here
and makes that miraculous play there at.

Speaker 2 (18:54):
The end of the game. I don't know, I held
on the ball and held on that ball.

Speaker 5 (18:58):
You could talk about last year, I mean the last
year before last Like, there have been a number of
times in recent history where the Cowboys have just had
these days against Green Bay, whether it was getting blown
out like they did a couple of years ago in
the playoffs, or whether it was last minute type stuff.
It's just it seems like the history has just not
been on the Cowboy side recently when it comes to

(19:21):
Green Bay and uh and for a lot of different reasons,
it's been different players. It's just it hasn't been on
the Cowboy side. So yes, I get flashbacks of all
of the above, and and certainly the one where we
were standing there on the sideline and does didn't they
they called that an incomplete catch just because that that's
one of the moments that because of proximity to Yeah,

(19:41):
because of proximity, we saw it happen.

Speaker 2 (19:44):
And immediately at the end, was it you are or Dave?
That was like, Helmer're about to call They're about to
call this or not?

Speaker 8 (19:51):
Hillman said, he goes, they're gonna review this and they're
gonna overturn it.

Speaker 7 (19:55):
And then I put him in a choke hold. Yeah,
I just grabbed him and no, no, it's not gonna happen.

Speaker 5 (19:59):
And I literally I hadn't even thought. I hadn't even
thought it wasn't a catch. I was just like, oh,
he made the catch. Great, this awesome. I was an
awesome catch. And then Dave put it into the universe
like yeah, yeah, Kirth, you wanted to challenge all year.

Speaker 7 (20:15):
That was the only one he ever won. So how
about you? About you?

Speaker 8 (20:19):
What's your thought about kid? Could do you have flashbacks?
And do you believe that that probably could happen again?

Speaker 10 (20:26):
Man?

Speaker 3 (20:26):
This the this is the weird part, Brian.

Speaker 9 (20:28):
The Cowboys doing knowing stuff like this all the time,
Like they'll lose to the Bears, but they'll beat Green
Band week four, but they'll play them again in the
postseason and lose horribly. Like that's just what the Cowboys do.
I was watching film on them last night, just getting
ready for all the shows and you know, for the
you know things that we're going to do here on
the break, I was like, man, tug a crab run
a wide open, like he did you know that one

(20:49):
time or the tight end did at one time versus him. Boy, man,
they just let Wicks run right past later that one time.
So I mean, you you see it, and it's hard
to miss it. You know, if you're you know, superstitious
at all, then you is just gonna walk into this
thing with a with a with a bad vibe. But
there's a Homer inside of me, Brian that says that
this team is going to act weird like versus bad teams,

(21:10):
but they gonna be really locked in versus good teams,
like like that's a that's a possibility, but you know
we had to see.

Speaker 8 (21:16):
Yeah, how about this one, Derek, how interested are you
in seeing jan Ye Thomas and Marquise Bell play at safety?

Speaker 5 (21:32):
I am interested in seeing y Ye Thomas, not so
sure about Bell. And here's why. I think if you
put Bell out there to replace presumably Donovan Wilson, I
think the skill set is the same. So if they're
gonna ask Belle to do what they've asked Wilson to do,
I think it's gonna be the same result. If they're
gonna move him down and actually play him closer to

(21:53):
the line of scrimmage, then my thought would be keep
Donovan Wilson in there, because I think Donovan Wilson is
a better player if you're asking him to do the
things that he does best, which is make plays closer
to the line of scrimmage. So yes, I want to
see a little more of Wanye Thomas. I want to
see how that works, especially if you're gonna flip them.
I'm even okay if you say I'm gonna put Wye
Thomas in there and it's gonna be Hooker and Thomas,

(22:14):
and I'm gonna use and I'm gonna kind of use
them interchangeably, I'm even more comfortable with that.

Speaker 2 (22:19):
But if you're gonna change the scheme.

Speaker 5 (22:20):
A little bit and pull that safety down, then I
think you keep Hooker and and I think you keep
uh Donovan Wilson and you just let them do what
they do best.

Speaker 9 (22:31):
How about you, Therechie, I'll put Donovan in Samborne spot
or Mayorage the spot, however they figure it out, and
let him do some weird linebacker stuff. And then because
because just you know, you don't want to take Donovan
off the field, dominant is a valuable like in terms
of physicality, running game, all this kind of stuff down
like down by the box. People get so caught up

(22:51):
in Donovan's coverage that they think Donovan's bad. Donovan ain't bad,
He's just doing things that he's not great at. So
I'm taking don.

Speaker 7 (22:57):
Boker gets a little pass on this too. Right now,
as we're focusing.

Speaker 3 (23:00):
On wis Hooker been weird too?

Speaker 7 (23:02):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (23:02):
This last game for sure.

Speaker 9 (23:04):
Hooker Hooker's definitely been been weird too. But what I
would love for Flus to do, And man, I'm just
a microphone I say these things confidently, Oh yeah, they'll work.
I'm just a microphone guy. But I would consider making
the safeties play halves as opposed to like a one
high guy, because if you're one high, you got to
cover the whole field from the middle, or you're just
covering thirds or whatever. I think some that will help

(23:24):
your safeties is play some more cover two. And that
may not be in his wheelhouse brand, but at least.

Speaker 7 (23:30):
The corners if you would, I mean sure, try and
disrupt routes.

Speaker 3 (23:33):
That'll help the corners.

Speaker 9 (23:35):
And you know corners, can you know, redirecting all this,
but instead of playing the whole field or just the middle,
make them play half. So now that'll that'll that'll help
your safeties and put Donovan down there. So now now
you're not having this Sanborn can't run fast problem because
Donovan's down there.

Speaker 5 (23:48):
Let me, I want to ask you this question off
that when you say you would put Donovan down to
replace Samborne, would that be a better option to put
Bell down there in that instance, because at least Bell
has done that before. They put him at the line
and back of a position. Now you might take a
hit on your run defense, but would you maybe consider
Bell and you keep don of it on the field
at the safety position if you're gonna in some instances

(24:08):
take a linebacker off the field, especially if you're playing
this cover too and you want somebody to cover deep middle,
you probably want to put somebody that can get back there.
I feel more comfortable, although I don't think Bell is
a great cover guy, I feel more comfortable to him
doing that.

Speaker 2 (24:19):
The samboe, What are your thoughts?

Speaker 9 (24:21):
I would do all these things, and I would hope
that I Refluse is open enough to be creative enough
to use all of his guys. You know, all these
other teams that may not have a superstar, but they
play great defense. They find ways to get all their
guys involved. So if that's how you want to mess
around and do it cool And you know Bells has
played linebacker here. But I think you know Donovan's violence

(24:41):
make him like it makes him bigger, like you know,
size wise, like you know, like how he attacks the runner, quarterback,
bliss on whatever. I think that that's worth looking at.
So you know, you can keep Kenner, Murray and Mike.
I would let Donovan play some will or you can
keep whatever and just put him like at the sam
some mess around with it, be creative, but definitely more.

Speaker 7 (25:02):
Want ag you getting to change his safeties up a
little bit.

Speaker 10 (25:08):
It's an interesting offer that you make there, like your
proposal in the sense of like you're trying to give
us something different because right now you you just want
to try different things because nothing is working. So you gotta,
you know, you get in order to find change, you
gotta do something different. But I'm having trouble with it

(25:29):
because deep down, I still feel like Hooker and Wilson
are still your better players, and I'm still attached to
what I've seen them do in the past, specifically Donovan Wilson,
like I fell in love with him that year or
it was a maybe right before he got his contract,
the way that he was playing his aggressiveness, the only

(25:51):
guy that was really tackling without fear and just going
for it. So I'm still holding on to that vision,
the visual of him.

Speaker 12 (26:00):
I know he has it in him, and I've seen.

Speaker 10 (26:02):
Hooker do it as well, So I think that's where
I'm having trouble with. Although I want to see change,
I still believe that these two guys can make it happen.
They just they just I don't know what the answer is.
How do you position them in the best way possible
for them to thrive again? But I still have hope

(26:23):
that they can they can get it done.

Speaker 9 (26:24):
You're not wrong because in those visuals you see Donovan
hitting people and thumping people, but you don't see Donovan
covering people in the visuals. You know what I'm saying,
So put them visuals back out there, him tackling the folk.

Speaker 8 (26:35):
That's the one Faci, Sir Clowny, is likely going to
be active this week on the edges. You've been only
dressed in four and you've got five of those guys,
actually got six of those guys who you're taking.

Speaker 7 (26:48):
Off the field.

Speaker 8 (26:51):
And it's and if you look at it is, you
got potentially because Sam's been a starter, Fowler has been
a starter, and you got Ezeraku, Neel and then James Houston.

Speaker 9 (27:01):
So most of your edges have been playing about twenty snaps.
Sam plays in the high thirties, James Houston's playing in
the fourteens or somewhere right. I would take some of
those from Sam. I don't.

Speaker 3 (27:15):
You don't have to take Sam off the field.

Speaker 9 (27:16):
You know, Sam needs reps to get, you know, getting
the groove of figuring the run game out and all
this kind of thing.

Speaker 3 (27:22):
All these guys need.

Speaker 7 (27:23):
But who would you make in active?

Speaker 9 (27:25):
Inactive? OK, So I gotta take somebody off. You have
to take all together.

Speaker 3 (27:28):
Yeah, well that's a whole nother question. Somebody gotta leave the.

Speaker 7 (27:32):
Party because they've they've been dressing five.

Speaker 12 (27:35):
Yeah, you gotta leave the party. Just gotta watch from
the sideline.

Speaker 7 (27:39):
They've been dressing five.

Speaker 8 (27:40):
I don't know if they'll dress six this week, but
you know, if there's a situation where they're dressing five,
you've got to look at Ezerraku, You've gotta look at Fowler,
you gotta look at kneeling you gotta look at Houston
and you gotta look at Sam. Those are your guys
that they've been dressing.

Speaker 9 (27:55):
I'll tell you what, man, Dante Fowl is making all
your money. It's out of him Sam. But Sam's playing,
He's playing the most.

Speaker 7 (28:04):
You mentioned not playing the most snaps.

Speaker 9 (28:05):
I wonder why, like why that's the case, Like is
there something that the coach you see that we're not
seeing is making Sam play all these snaps? But I
think the difference is I don't think Dante Fowler plays
a bunch on teams. I think Sam plays plays a
couple of reps on on teams. Houston does, Kneeland does
as well. The front office people in the room wouldn't
like me saying it, but Dante Fowler hasn't.

Speaker 3 (28:28):
Done a whole bunch to help you, gotcha?

Speaker 9 (28:30):
And look, maybe Dante Fowler would be better if Clowne
was on the field. But I guess you could say
that about either one of them. You know, hopefully Donovan's rookie.
You want him to get those reps. It's a it's tough,
but Dante fol I guess.

Speaker 10 (28:40):
Hey, g I'm listening to you in my head, I'm like,
why aren't making it so complicated because nobody's doing anything anyway.
But then I'm staring at this list, I'm like, dang,
like it is complicated because it leads you to think, Okay,
who can clowney elevate like make their game better?

Speaker 12 (29:02):
And that's a.

Speaker 10 (29:06):
I would I would say this people that I would
like to keep on the field Sam Fowler because I'm
still holding hope from what he did last year in
Washington Ryan the famous quote hope every year. I think
I would be taking it this early in the season

(29:27):
over there, hop right there, Derek inhaling hoping.

Speaker 9 (29:36):
Oh, that's one of your better rundown guys. You running
fans might be good because he's because he's out there.
It is you know, the rookie do He flashed a
little bit last week, just a little bit.

Speaker 10 (29:48):
I think I would be okay with taking You're taking
what I would do.

Speaker 9 (29:56):
I take it back, but I'm going Sam, well, but
go ahead, finish. Please you take Sam on events.

Speaker 10 (30:02):
Not because he's I don't know. Sometimes you learn from
watching from the sideline. You get a different.

Speaker 9 (30:09):
Perspective, mental reps for your second round, pig anbar that
you need because you traded in Micah.

Speaker 2 (30:16):
By the way I got, the right answer is the
right answer. Right answer, the right answer is performing well.

Speaker 5 (30:25):
So if I want to, if I want to make
a statement in that room, I'm gonna take the top
dog and I'm gonna sit him down. So Dante Folo,
this week, we're gonna have you sit I'm gonna make
a statement in that room, and I'm gonna say, if
you all don't want to end up in the same situation,
sure show me what you got, because I think by
the way, we're we're all, I mean we're we're we're
making a big deal by something where all of them

(30:47):
probably deserve to be said to be sad, like they
are not getting the job done, and I think no
one can make the argument they're getting the job. So
to me, I'm like, how can I make the biggest
point by having someone sit down? And I think the
biggest point you can make it's it's like the old
the I've never been to prison, but it's what you
hear about prison.

Speaker 2 (31:06):
Right, you walk in, you walk in.

Speaker 5 (31:08):
If you want to prove a point in prison, you
walk in, you find the biggest, baddest dude and you
make a point with him. Right, So I'm like, yeah,
and get meat then, But you make a point with
the biggest baddest dude. So if Fowler's supposed to be
the bat baddest dudes every Friday, it's that which dominance early.
So I think that that would be how I would
approach you. Okay, I'm gonna take that guy and sit

(31:28):
him down, And now I'm gonna see if those other
guys take the hint and say, well we better step
it up because some of those they might not have
a job next year.

Speaker 10 (31:35):
But are you in a situation where you have the
I don't want to say luxury, because they ain't nothing
luxury about this, but are you in a position where
you can actually make that decision because of the time,
Like right now, I think you're on the hot seat
right now.

Speaker 12 (31:51):
You know with how what are you?

Speaker 2 (31:54):
What are you losing? If you sit down Fowler? What
are you losing?

Speaker 9 (31:58):
It's really politics, the same reason Hookers keep like like,
he's just happened to make the money, right, so so
the money guy's playing more.

Speaker 5 (32:06):
But nobody right now, there's nobody you could make an
argument for at the defensive end position that if you
sat them down, something drastically. You're missing such and I
would say Newland has been the better performer of them
just because he's giving you something in the run game.
But Houston was quiet this last game too, he was
very quiet. Get get a pressure you.

Speaker 7 (32:30):
Thank you guys for answer the questions. Appreciate you.

Speaker 2 (32:34):
Oh let's go to break break when we come back.

Back to the Break ATNT connecteen changes everything.

Speaker 2 (35:38):
Welcome back.

Speaker 5 (35:39):
We're in the final segment of the break. We'll life
in that s WBC Mortgage Studios at the Star. All right,
we're gonna do in this final segment. We're going to
talk about Ceedee Lamb right now. He has a high
angle sprain. I think earlier in the week the reports
were three to four weeks. We'll see what it ends up.
Being High ankle sprains I think tend to take a
little bit longer. But as we said before, and as
Jerry said this morning, to tolerate pain is a big

(36:01):
part of that. And he's a tough guy. So let's
see if he can get back a little faster than that.
That being said, though, I'm gonna paint the picture of
how I looked at the situation that evolved that turned
into an injury for him. Cowboys were running the ball effectively.
Williams has been a good running back for them all season.
The offensive line is blocking really well. And if you

(36:24):
really think about what Ceedee Lamb, there have been times
throughout Ceedee Lamb's career here where they have used him
as a guy. They line up in the backfield and
hand the ball to.

Speaker 7 (36:33):
Him, and he didn't have a running back.

Speaker 5 (36:34):
When you didn't have a running back, you didn't have
a running game. Things weren't working well. And in those instances,
CD wasn't a guy. And this is no knock on CD.
He's a wide receiver, but he wasn't a guy that
was breaking twenty thirty, forty fifty yard runs. He would
get you six yards, eight yards, maybe ten yards, get
your first down. But Williams also could do that. So

(36:57):
my question becomes, is the risk worth the reward in
this instance of aligning CD up in the backfield with
the potential as we see in this instance of him
ended ending up injured.

Speaker 9 (37:09):
Noah, Noah, no nah, you don't. You don't need to
see CD running, you know, from the backfield anymore, running
sweeps and all that. Let turping run sweeps and let
him do his thing. Think about Williams, What what makes
him like like really like fun to watch is that
if the if the first person gets there, he's probably
dragging that person to the second person, right and you

(37:29):
know CD is not going to break tackles in that way.
CD is gonna be slick and sideways and that tends
to benefit him more when he's out in open space
down the field and stuff.

Speaker 3 (37:38):
Right.

Speaker 9 (37:39):
Uh, you don't need CD to be a battering ram
or anything like that for you. So if it's up
to me, since you have a running back now, if
it was Zeke, not yourself, because you you know, you set.

Speaker 3 (37:47):
Him down toward the end of this career. Let's Claire.

Speaker 9 (37:49):
Yeah, yeah, I'm not talking about I'm not talking about
Ezekiel Elleen, I'm talking about Zeke.

Speaker 2 (37:54):
There, No, you actually are talking about Ezekiel. I'm talking about.

Speaker 9 (37:57):
Zeke buddy the other fifteen, not twenty one with the
road up Jersey. I'm talking about fifteen when fifteen is
your running back. Man, you can put Lamb at running
back all you want to, but you have guys that
can do the job now, so I'm doing them.

Speaker 10 (38:12):
Yeah, I agreed to me. It just makes no sense,
like why the need to do that. And yesterday Brian
Scholtenheimer was asked about it, and to my surprise, because
he's always very upfront and honest and everything, he had
no regrets, Like he said, Hey, he's one of our
best players and we want to try different things with

(38:34):
our best players to have them on the field. And
injuries are just a part of the game. You know,
you can't really prevent them. But I mean, why, why
did you feel the need to do that when you
have other people who can do that as well. So, yeah,
it makes no sense to me. And he said, they're

(38:55):
not gonna take that away from the game. I mean,
you can't do it right now he's hurt.

Speaker 2 (39:00):
Well, but that's the thing. Whatever he says.

Speaker 5 (39:02):
At this point, I don't know, like I would be
interested to see if when he comes back, we still
see that as a part of the offense, because I
do want like, I get what coaches say, and I
agree with this to some degree.

Speaker 2 (39:14):
I get what coaches say. Man, it's a part of the game.
Injuries happen.

Speaker 5 (39:17):
Like, do you run away from putting guys on the
field because they might get injured, Well, injuries happened, that's you.

Speaker 2 (39:22):
You don't want to be that short sighted.

Speaker 5 (39:24):
But at the same time, my question just becomes like,
is the risk versus worth the reward. If you didn't
have a running game, maybe so. If you didn't have
a running back that you thought was capable, maybe so.
If you didn't have somebody like Turpin. Let's even say
who you could line up, and he tends to be
I think even more explosive than CD and those kinds
of situations, then maybe so. But in my opinion, CD's

(39:47):
way down the list on guys that in that situation
is going to turn that play into a big play
for you.

Speaker 2 (39:52):
Why take the risk?

Speaker 8 (39:53):
Yeah, I would shot, he's probably getting a salad at
the salad bar over here.

Speaker 7 (39:58):
In the cafeteria.

Speaker 8 (40:00):
Yeah, And I'd walk up to him and I'd get
my salad and I would start going, hey, coach, if
you do that again, I can't replace that guy. I
don't have anybody that's as good as that guy.

Speaker 2 (40:11):
Speaking as a scout guy, yeah, us from the fan, you.

Speaker 7 (40:15):
Know, I'm walking I'm walking up a scout.

Speaker 6 (40:17):
Guy and I'm walking up.

Speaker 8 (40:19):
I'm walking up to him, and I'm going, coach, I
can't replace that guy if you do that anymore.

Speaker 7 (40:24):
If you want to do that.

Speaker 8 (40:26):
This is the same argument that we a lot of
us get into about putting your stars as punt and
kick returners. It's the same I watched Dez Bryant break
his ankle against the Colts in a game because of
a return. You know, I watched Jason Seahorn from the
Giants their starting corner, wreck his knee, never to play again.

(40:49):
You know, these are the things that you have to
think about. And I just remind the coach. I would say, listen,
I heard what you said.

Speaker 7 (40:55):
Coach. We're all about trying to get plays and score
and all that, but.

Speaker 8 (40:59):
I just want to let you know that if you
do that again and he gets hurt, I don't have
anybody that can replace him.

Speaker 7 (41:05):
So just please keep that in mind if you're going
to call that number again.

Speaker 9 (41:09):
Plus, Lamb catching the ball has always gotten more yards
than Lamb just kind of running it anyway.

Speaker 4 (41:13):
So just thought it on me.

Speaker 5 (41:15):
Yeah, do you think that that CD feels the same.

Speaker 7 (41:17):
Way I Ced wants to play competitive, He wants to play.

Speaker 8 (41:21):
He was thinking it was a weird angle when he
got the ball, by the way, it was kind of yeah,
you know it was. It was just strange. It wasn't
a clean play to where he could, you know, get
to the edge. But anyway, it's just all about I
think you have to be very mindful as a coach
of putting your star players in positions where they could
get hurt. If he gets hurt playing as a wide receiver,

(41:44):
that's one thing. If he gets hurt. Let's be honest.
I think Deebo Samuel.

Speaker 7 (41:48):
As his effectiveness as a wide receiver.

Speaker 8 (41:51):
Has gone downhill. For all the times that he played
as a running back for San Francisco, dealing with shoulder
problems and things like that. He's doing a good job
with the the Commanders. But think about him all those
times he had to carry, and the times he took
hits and the times he got hurt. You know, just
remind yourself, I can't replace that guy. If he's standing

(42:12):
over there next to me. They don't have anybody that good.

Speaker 9 (42:14):
Also too, that's the reason why Dak may run one
time in the game as opposed to run like five
or six times.

Speaker 3 (42:20):
You know what I mean.

Speaker 9 (42:20):
Like, you can run one time if it's wide open
at the end of the game, field goal clutch, Okay, fine,
do it. But if it's like first down, you fight
for extra yards. You're you old player player.

Speaker 3 (42:29):
We need you.

Speaker 2 (42:29):
Yeah, all right, I appreciate you guys. You back tomorrow.

Speaker 5 (42:32):
We'll dive into the Packers offense versus the Cowboys defense.
Until then, for Boch Lombardi, Heyan brought us in Ambergarcia.
I am Derek Eilton. This has been The Break live

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
