Speaker 5 (00:16):
Are you ready for a break?
Speaker 3 (00:18):
Absolutely? Ready for a break?
Speaker 5 (00:21):
Yeah, And so much for that.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
It's time for The Break on Dallas Cowboys dot Com
right with Mbar Garcia, Brian brought Us, Votch Lombardi and
Derek Eagleton.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
It is Tuesday, November eleventh, twenty twenty five, Season twenty one,
Episode number seventy four. Welcome to the latest edition of
The Break, where a live live from the SWBC Mortgage studios.
At the start, we're presented by LG. LG's the world's
number one OLED TV brand for eleven years incounting see
why at LG dot Com. Forward slash O led Evo,
Welcome to the show. We got a few things we're
(00:58):
going to get into today. We have a bonus day
this week because because there is no UH because we
had an extra day coming off the buy. So there's
some big picture stuff today. We'll go start by talking
about the NFC, where the Cowboys sit in the NFC
and what they need to do if they're gonna make
any sort of run to make this season a playoff
type season.
Speaker 6 (01:18):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
And then a little later in the show, we'll get
into a little bit of self scouting. We'll look at
some of the things that this team has done over
the first half of the season and talk about areas
where we think they have to improve and what that
should look like if they're going to make those improvements.
Let's start first though, in the NFC.
Speaker 5 (01:36):
Just say something, sure, absolutely, I was watching Green Bay
and Philly a little bit last night.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Did you fall asleep?
Speaker 5 (01:41):
I couldn't watch the whole bunch because YouTube TV don't
have ESPN, but I did find way to bullet I
mean I was watching. I was watching.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
You do realize that's national. I don't know people listening.
Speaker 5 (01:50):
I'm playing, all right, a serious thing on the jokes good.
I want to make you Brian. I mean, I was
so upsetting Brian there, I was looking right, that'll be.
I worked with Derek eagleson. I was so upset at
the low scoring game. Not from a standpoint of like
a boring game or something like that, but I was
watching and I was like, you know, if these are
(02:12):
two offenses that people tend to respect and their defense
are buying them time. They're buying time for the other side,
and I just started hating. I was like, man, what
if boy? And I don't want to say nothing because
they probably over there on the other side of still
listen to a boy, But I was like, man, how
fire would it be if all our guys came back
over showing them all the all the new additions. You
(02:34):
know what I'm saying. Quinna Williams and the boys and
Flues just figured something out and we in a situation
where the Eagles got ten point ten points on us
in the fourth quarter. You know what I mean, I
would be I would go to jail, Derek, I would
go to jail. But I know they ain't the case.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
Do you think that's the kind of jump this defense
can make? Because I do think this defense can be better.
And what I heard from pretty much everybody on this
show was you don't need a great defense, you need
a at least an average defense.
Speaker 5 (03:04):
They played some really good defense yesterday, and I think
their offensive inconsistencies kind of showed throughout the night or whatever.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
The Green Bay has been inconsistent offensively all year all
year and lost their best player, Tucker, but they gonna.
Speaker 5 (03:17):
Get passes because they won games. Though they gonna get
passed because they won games. If the Cowboys, in which
I think they're ridiculously good on offense, you don't have
to be knockout, shut down defense like that, you know
what I'm saying, Just hey, can we not have twenty
some points on us in the third quarter twenty four
to seven in the third quarter? Give the Cowboys offense
(03:40):
time to like figure things out and maybe make an adjustment.
I thought about something the other day. I wonder how
many offensive adjustments have we been able to make this
year that like mattered? Because you're always so behind in
a lot of these games, you don't even get an
opportunity to say, all right, guys, we're gonna do this different.
We're gonna keep running the ball here there, and then
we're gonna try to do this and try to make
up for it. You don't have their love because it's
(04:00):
a it's a damn track meet. Now. So I saw
that game last night and I got jealous and there
and they're both conference opponents, and it makes me say,
you lost the both of them, where you lost them one,
you tied them.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
Yep, Brian, well you got something sale there.
Speaker 4 (04:11):
No, I mean I was just sitting there thinking, I
don't know if you're great on offense anymore. Well, you
know related and that's you know, and to me, that's
you know, when you start to talk about a team,
maybe a defense that you know is maybe it has
to be a little bit better than what you thought.
But I think there's some elements to we saw some
things offensively the last couple of weeks. This this offense
(04:32):
has had its struggles, you know, whether it's playing the
odd man fronts, the three four fronts, you know, whether
they've had to You know that your quarterback has done
a great job of avoiding pressures. Maybe the pressures have
been there all year. We every time we look at
and we come in here on a Monday, we break
down the film, we talk to you and we say, well,
(04:52):
what a great job by Prescott avoiding the pressures. And
then we look at the pressure numbers when the metrics
come out and it's that guy had.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
Five, this guy had four, this guy three.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
Oh wait, your best player had three, you know, and
oh your right tackle had five. You know, I mean,
your quarterback has done a great job of avoiding pressure
in making plays That's that's the thing now I'm a
little bit worried about though with your offensive line. You
know the thing though that with with the quarterback's ability
(05:22):
to avoid the pressure, does that put even more pressure
now on the defense because maybe you're not going to
score thirty forty points a game. You know, maybe it's
going to be a little bit more of a of
you know, the offense is going to have those struggles.
So I wonder, I think you're gonna have to. I
think you're gonna have to. They're gonna make a big
swing at it in this in this Raiders game. And
(05:43):
there's a couple of ways to think and go. It
could be locked down and playing well and everybody on
the same page, or it could be like five new
guys out there acting like they've never played together. And
that's the thing that I kind of look at right now,
it's like, which one of the defenses it's gonna show up.
I don't think you're gonna you're gonna need a defense.
If the offense is going to play the way it
(06:05):
currently is, you're gonna need a little bit more from
your defense. And you know that's that's probably that might
be asking a lot but they're gonna take a big
swing at it here against the Raiders.
Speaker 5 (06:15):
This well, Brown, I don't want to fuss. And I'm
sorry because Brian about the made me futs. We just can't.
The day before talk about how great pickings and Waves
and we argue about how great these guys are, we
talk about Lamb and how great four is, and then
come here the next day. We ain't gonna fight, and
then just come here the next day and be like, well,
I don't think you because all the great.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
The offensive line has not played well.
Speaker 5 (06:36):
You can't.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
You cannot cannot see the.
Speaker 4 (06:39):
Last couple of weeks they have not all the have
not played well offensively the last two weeks. Sure they haven't.
And against and look what Arizona did the other day
in their game.
Speaker 5 (06:49):
What do they do to bess what what does the
Cowboys offensive line.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
Do the best? Well? Run block?
Speaker 5 (06:53):
So you get taken out of that, right. So I
have a feeling that my offensive line would be much
better if they get the hitch you first and then
kind of pass blocked sometimes, right, Brian. But if it's
a situation where all.
Speaker 4 (07:04):
Right, I'm just saying, I'm saying this is passing, this
defense has to play better. You're asking it to be
the twenty ninth best defense. I don't think that's gonna
be good enough. Not the way the offense is, not
the way the offense is currently playing. It's not but
my only and I have no problems I have lixten.
I think we talked about pickings, we talked about Lamb,
(07:25):
we talked about whims, we talked about all these guys,
and you know, and we've kind of known it's the
offense is gonna have to carry this thing.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
They're gonna have to carry this thing.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
But to me, like I'm saying, I think the defense
is gonna I want this defense to get two more
stops a game and see what happens. But if I'm
getting two more stops a game, I don't need you
getting inside the five yard line a couple of different
times and not scoring.
Speaker 5 (07:48):
You're not wrong, But at this part of the season,
and we're not fighting at this part of the season,
everything's starting to kind of get figured out just a
little bit more. Even the best offense in the league,
the Colts have had bad days. The Bills have had
bad days, like pick A offense, Eagles, Green Bay, They've
all had bad days. All I'm saying is for my
beloved Dallas Cowboys is when they do have a bad
and look and look. The Cardinals are terrible on defense
(08:10):
for real, for real, and the Broncos are fantastic, amazing
on defense. But in the event that the Cowboys running
too a defense that will give them trouble, I just
don't need the defense to give up twenty five points
at the half, because I do think that this offense
is gonna.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
You're about to run through it. Just you're about to.
Speaker 4 (08:27):
Run through a gauntlet of teams. The Philadelphia is, the
Kansas City's and Detroit, and you're gonna see a lot
about it.
Speaker 3 (08:34):
You're gonna see what your offense really really is.
Speaker 5 (08:36):
All I can make an argument that you've seen the
scariest defenses that you could possibly see right now. I
think in I think Denver's defense is so different than
the rest of those.
Speaker 4 (08:46):
How about the Bears, I think you got well that's
about how about Carolina?
Speaker 5 (08:50):
And that's that's fun about a umbles in game flow?
You ain't wrong, but that's I'm.
Speaker 4 (08:54):
Just saying, though you've got to I mean, if you're
if you're going to if you're going to really, you know,
if you're gonna ask the defense, if you're going to
ask this defense, And like I say, I I am
with you guys on this, but I to me, it
has got to be You've got to be Dak Prescott
can't have a game where all of a sudden, quick
pressure affects him and that's what happened the Arizona game
against the defense that doesn't rush the passer all that.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
Well, you've got issues at right tackle. You've got some
major issues at right tackle.
Speaker 5 (09:22):
I'm so sorry, Luis Is I'm sorry. What what you
What was your saying before me and Brian started ping?
Speaker 6 (09:29):
Not right with Brian, though, if it matters at all,
I agree with Brian what you say. Okay, So I
was gonna say speak because you keep mumbling, So I
gotta race it upage I overtakes. When you initially post
a question, Derek, my initial thoughts is.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
The question, I'm sorry, questions.
Speaker 6 (09:57):
Ahead about the defense now and having hope in the
second half of the season. I don't even know, but
my initial thought was being optimistic about Okay, the trays
that you made, the people that you're getting back on
the defensive side of the ball, then hopefully getting a
more solidified offensive line as they continue to play together,
(10:20):
hopefully just create some kind of continuity, continued continuity there.
But then I'm like, okay, you know what, let me
pull up the standings real quick, because one thing is
to think about it, another thing is to see it.
I pulled it up.
Speaker 5 (10:37):
Not optimistic.
Speaker 6 (10:39):
Optimism faded away very quickly because again not that I
didn't know the record, but then when you see it visually,
you're like, oh my god, out of nine games, the
Cowlways have won, three, tied one, and you're like, Okay,
it's not looking great. I think the team they're gonna improve.
(11:00):
I think the defense is gonna definitely show some improvement,
but it might end up being a little too late
of the timing of the season. And I think that's
the problem. We're gonna potentially headed towards the end of
the season seeing some really good things about this team
and having hope of like okay, well, you know, now
you got this crew and then let's give it another year.
(11:22):
But that's where I feel like it's it might be
a little too late for it.
Speaker 2 (11:27):
Well, that is the question that we're going to get
into in the second segment. I actually have that ready
for us to go. We'll do that when we come
back real quick. Though, I want to say, just for
the record, I actually agree with Watch.
Speaker 7 (11:36):
On this one.
Speaker 5 (11:37):
I didn't know who Fred Johnson is.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
Johnson?
Speaker 5 (11:40):
Does anybody know who? To hell Fridge? He played right
tap of for the Eagles. Lan Joneson got hurt. Oh
that guy, and the Eagles still scored.
Speaker 3 (11:48):
He's been the jumbo tackle for them.
Speaker 5 (11:50):
The Eagles still scored their goofy little ten points and
they defense kept them in the game.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
That's all. But I think the point that that I
would make out of that that I agree with is
I think this offensive line has been a problem, especially
at right tackle for a long time this season. I
think the difference is number one, Dak has been able
to mitigate the pressure. But I also think it's a
situation where when Dallas gets into a situation where the
(12:13):
other team sprints out and Dallas doesn't have that quick
start and they fall behind, they lose that part of
their game, which is their running game. We've even talked
about it the last couple of weeks, when.
Speaker 3 (12:23):
The run the ball, run the ball and still lost. No, no, no,
they have but my point, they lost games.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
But they've had, but they've had to abandon the run. Brian,
they don't run as much when they get into those games.
We talked about it last after that, after that last game,
we talked about how they were running the ball. Well,
they had to get away from it because the game
got away from them. That's my point, is this astver.
I mean they've yes, they had, but they had to
get away from it. That's my point. And you when
(12:50):
this team is balanced, they can afford to minigate. You
know how that right tackle.
Speaker 4 (12:55):
You know how bad your defense is, Yes, so you're
never gonna have that, So maybe you have to be
better on you even have to be better on offense.
Speaker 2 (13:02):
Well, that's that's the biggest problem that we've talked about
again all this season, which is you basically are forcing
your offense to be perfect every game. And that's you've
known that.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
You've known that since Week three.
Speaker 5 (13:13):
You're not gonna be every week.
Speaker 3 (13:15):
What are you saying then?
Speaker 2 (13:16):
What I'm saying is the defense is gonna have to
be better, not great. That's where I started with this.
The defense has to be middle of the road. If
they can get to be middle of the rope, they
can get you that extra Do you think they're gonna
get the middle of the road they got they got
the best defensive tackle in the league. Maybe that gets
them a little bit better. I don't know how much better,
but maybe get them a little bit Like that's your hope.
That that's their hope.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
That's their hope.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
Is that this guy will get them to at least
being an average defense. And if you can get them
to being an average defense, now you can create some
of that balance and then getting that balance hope.
Speaker 4 (13:48):
But you've got five guys coming in. How many of
them haven't even played a snap this year? You know
that's and that's the thing that I think that you know,
we're we're calling for hopeing and like, oh, they're bringing
all these side My hope too.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
I'm the guy.
Speaker 4 (14:02):
I'm the same guy that says, oh, you need to
do something different, right tackle, and then you put the
right tackle in there and he plays like ass you
know what I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (14:09):
So to me, I feel like that you need to
find a way here to like maybe the defense. Yeah,
you're taking a big swing at it, but we don't.
Speaker 4 (14:17):
Know, we don't know this defense could be and but
you know what, the one thing we know is this
offense can be This offense can be special in the league,
and at times it has. The last couple of weeks,
it hasn't been. It hasn't carried this defense, you know.
But it's supposed to have carried this defense all year.
We've talked about that. That's all my point is.
Speaker 5 (14:37):
Now, know that wasn't realistic.
Speaker 8 (14:39):
Though.
Speaker 5 (14:40):
You can't carry a defense the whole season, so you
do need the defense to carry some weight. I'm saying
with these new additions, even if Olvshan hadn't played a
game all season, I still think he gives you so
much more than what you had. Quinton Williams gives you
so much more than what you have.
Speaker 6 (14:55):
PA come down, come down, No, no, no, we're not
screaming here, Okay, break quick question you got.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
Yeah, at this point, I just like, I'm sorry.
Speaker 6 (15:11):
I was going to ask, if I may watch, I
was going to ask, looking at the opponents that you
have in the lineup coming up next, does that allow
you to really get your defense to kind of come together,
because I feel like, based on the opponents that you have,
you you're in survival mode right now. You're just so
(15:35):
sometimes depending on some opponents, you can I don't even
know how to phrase it right, right, get right.
Speaker 2 (15:42):
But like playing the Cowboys, you can make sure everybody's like.
Speaker 5 (15:48):
Is your last warm up type game, and then you
got giants the rest of the way, well not the.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
Rest of the way, well the next five weeks. Next
five weeks were gonna take our first break. When we
come back, we're gonna talk a little bit more about that,
because I do think that's an interesting topic. We'll be

Speaker 5 (18:58):
We were saying over the break, we were just talking
about the teams, you know, and everybody's saying something crazy.
But I feel like, if.
Speaker 2 (19:05):
You're set this up first before you get into that TV,
let me let me just set it up with a
few people listening, because they didn't hit the preface. Preface
is when you look at the NFC right now, it
immediately it looks very daunting for the Cowboys to even
make a push into the playoffs, because I think there's
been some talk like can the Cowboys get on a run?
The issue is right now, there are six teams that
(19:28):
are way out ahead of the Cowboys. You've got Philly
at seven and two, Seattle in the Rams both at
seven and two, and by the way, Seattle and the
Rams look really really good. I mean they look really
really good. And then you've got detroited six and three.
Who we know is good. Chicago is playing good football
and they've already beaten the Cowboys. They're at six and
three as well. San Francisco. I don't know how they're
doing it. They didn't do it this last week against
(19:49):
the Rams, But I don't know how they're doing But
they're six and four. You got to give them their credit.
They're six and four right now. This is where it
gets interesting. Green Bay's in that final playoff spot right now.
They are five to three and one, two game ahead
of the Cowboys. Carolina is five and five, a game
and a half ahead Minnesota four and five.
Speaker 3 (20:05):
When you look at play Minnesota two right and you play.
Speaker 2 (20:08):
Minnesota, when you look at how this slays out, Dallas
actually could get back into the playoff hunt. But a
lot of things have to happen right for them. Number One,
they got to get on a consistent run because that's
not been there mo this year. They might win one here,
but then they'll lose a game on.
Speaker 5 (20:25):
Rings.
Speaker 2 (20:25):
You know, they got to get on a run. And
I think but if they can get on a run,
then my question for you guys is is there a
chance do you think in your mind, do you think
they can get on the kind of run and what
would it require as far as the second half of
the year. What kind of record are they going to
have to put together in order to make a legitimate
shot at making the playoffs.
Speaker 5 (20:44):
I think these nicks. So let's let's just say and
we can't just say, but let's just say they beat
the Raiders. Please, y'all, I'm big, and please just to
make this don't lose to the Raiders, just to make
this X size makes sense, because not much. Yes, not man,
we're getting ready for draft, show man.
Speaker 2 (21:01):
You have they have to they have to.
Speaker 5 (21:03):
Well, let's just say that they beat the Raiders and
then you got this stretch. You know what I'm saying.
If you get two wins out out of that three,
two wins out of those three teams, look like you
have a shot.
Speaker 2 (21:14):
Now those three for those that may not know, that
is Philip I mean, that's Philadelphia at home, that's Kansas
City at home, that's Detroit on the road.
Speaker 5 (21:21):
I feel good about Philly. I just that just knowing
he keeps us in those games. We'll have to see.
But the rest of the way you have to go
on to run you have to take care of business there.
I think the one thing that's low key interesting for
the Cowboys is if you can match the number of
wins with a team that's in the postseason already, the
tie puts you ahead of them. That's what I learned
(21:44):
looking at the rest because I was just looking at it,
you know, because I was getting ready for draft, right.
I was like, damn, tank a thumb. If you're a
three win team, you either the seventh overall pick or
you the fourteenth. But the tie puts us ahead of
all the teams that got three wins. So if it
come down to a situation where we get the nine
and maybe the last team has nine wins, you automatically
(22:05):
better than them because y'all got the same number of wins,
but you got less losses than them. So that could
propel you to the front.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
But it also goes both ways. It could also be
that's you're that team has half a win more than you, right,
So it can go both ways.
Speaker 5 (22:20):
So if you have nine wins, you'll never be better
than the ten win teams. And I don't foresee it
happened two years ago, but I don't foresee the Eagles
just imploding at the end of the season and you
just win the division and you tried.
Speaker 2 (22:32):
I mean, they're seven and two. My thought is, the
likelihood is not right now that you're gonna win the division.
Even if you be feeling this, why are you getting
these nine wins from just in my mind, just nine
wins means they have to go six and two down
the stretch, just.
Speaker 5 (22:43):
Just counting my mind.
Speaker 6 (22:45):
So you, yeah, I know what it means there.
Speaker 2 (22:47):
But my point is like, well, he's making I guess
the best case scenarios they go six and two down
the stretch.
Speaker 5 (22:55):
She's asking, they're actually ask the path to get there.
First thing you gotta do is be the Raiders, and
even it'll be beneficial to you over these over that
next three games with those those top tier winning teams,
to at least win two of those games. You can
lose two, it'll be tight, but win two of those
games and then maybe you have wiggle room to mess around.
(23:15):
Towards the end of the season.
Speaker 2 (23:16):
You do have the Chargers, who are playing good football, charge.
Speaker 5 (23:18):
Up playing fantastic football, but the Washington Football Wizards the
Giants the next time, if you can overcome the Lions,
Chiefs and Eagles. You ain't worry about the Wizards and
the damn Giants, you know what I'm saying. So that's
what I'm nine winning.
Speaker 3 (23:29):
You might want to worry about him the way.
Speaker 5 (23:32):
They've all got fired.
Speaker 2 (23:32):
The Giants lost that court, you you would hope you
don't lose that game at the end of the season.
Speaker 5 (23:38):
Yeah, so I think that's your path end of this thing.
And like we were saying, like, you.
Speaker 2 (23:43):
Get to that final game and everything's lined up.
Speaker 5 (23:46):
And you get told up.
Speaker 4 (23:47):
I really thought that the game against the Commanders on
Christmas Day was going to be for a playoff.
Speaker 3 (23:51):
Spot from the first people.
Speaker 2 (23:52):
Yeah, yeah, I I did.
Speaker 5 (23:54):
It's old with for them people, even to him, but
to your to you all's point, we were off their
and we're saying this, it was probably with the negativity
and something like that. Even if you, even if you
do the Cowboys make it to the postseason, can you
play with those teams? And at that point, I think
you're good enough on offense to where you can win
a match up with some of these guys. I think
(24:16):
a Bronco level defense takeaway what your superpower is. But
now you look at the teams that are probably gonna
be postseason teams who got a defense like that. Seattle
got a defense like that. So I hope you stay
I hope you stay away from them.
Speaker 2 (24:30):
Their defense is good. I would say the Rams too,
but if you, if you are more more balanced. But
Seattle their defenses.
Speaker 5 (24:37):
Boy boys just former cowboys Hall of Fame less right now,
Ring ringoor Aiden dirty Tan up over there. But I
think there are some matchups you can you can get
into on the back end of this thing where you'll
be You'll be straight, You'll be fine, You'll be fine.
Speaker 3 (24:51):
Who do you think is gonna be the number one seed?
If you had to project right.
Speaker 5 (24:55):
Now, if it's the Eagles or something like that, like
you just win all your games and the Eagles are
the number one team and you the last team in
I feel good about just who's the best team.
Speaker 2 (25:05):
Who's the best team Seattle Rams?
Speaker 3 (25:08):
I think the Rams?
Speaker 4 (25:09):
And yeah, So what that means is, though, then you
would have to if you're the last team in, Now,
who do you think the second best team is? Because
that's that's that would be your next that would be
because your Rams will get to buy. And then who
do you think the second best team is? You're probably
gonna have to go to Do you think it's Philly.
Speaker 2 (25:26):
Well, here's my thing, Brian, I don't think even though
I agree with you, I think the Rams might be
the best team of those three, I don't ultimately think
that they have the best shot of getting the first seed. Okay,
I think Philly questions.
Speaker 3 (25:38):
Okay, so you're gonna say Philly.
Speaker 2 (25:40):
I say Philly has the best.
Speaker 3 (25:41):
So then it's all likelihood.
Speaker 4 (25:42):
You're gonna probably have to go to Sofi Stadium and
win a game against the Rams.
Speaker 2 (25:46):
In the Yeah, if you get to the playoffs.
Speaker 5 (25:48):
Yeah, that fight, take that fight.
Speaker 3 (25:52):
Who's the team you absolutely don't want to play right now?
Seattle over the Rams. I don't want.
Speaker 5 (25:57):
I don't want to play Seattle.
Speaker 2 (25:59):
Yeah, I think I got rather play the Rams in Seattle.
Speaker 3 (26:02):
I hate this. I hate the man we saw with
the Rams and the workouts we did with them training.
Speaker 2 (26:09):
But you know, visiting right the one thing I mean,
and that was just training camp practices.
Speaker 3 (26:15):
Man.
Speaker 2 (26:16):
One thing I look at what the Rams is like.
The Rams are Rams play offense, and but the Rams
are also an injury away from being being hard to like.
Speaker 5 (26:24):
No, yeah, be.
Speaker 3 (26:28):
Careful, be careful.
Speaker 4 (26:29):
Of wishing injury on anything I got, I got, I
got death threats you did, I got threat death.
Speaker 2 (26:36):
But we're seeing Pooking the cool go down a lot
like he he will get he will have some injuries.
And that's the part where I'm like, at least you
have that Like those two things, I don't. Honestly, I
think it's hard to see unless his defense makes a
lot of changes. It's hard to see Dallas matching up
well with Seattle or the Rams. But if the if
the defense starts to come on, then maybe you feel
(26:57):
a little bit better about that Right now though, That's
why I wouldn't want to eastide of one of those
teams right now, because I just think it's where the
defense is right now. If the if the Cardinals can
put up points on this defense, those two teams would
they would just have a track.
Speaker 5 (27:11):
What you would hope for is that if Seattle is
the number two team the Rams in that division, so
there'll be a wild card team, you would hope that
they would knock them off for something like that, and
then you will get a It sounds like easy to
sound crazy saying that, but then you would have a
Rams matchup. You want to see Seattle.
Speaker 4 (27:28):
How do you feel about Detroit, and you'll see them
here in a few weeks. How do you feel about
playing Detroit?
Speaker 2 (27:33):
Detroit's a little compromise right now with injuries they're they're
a little compromise. It's that's one where I would be
interested to see what does their offensive line look like
by the time they get to the playoffs when the
Cowboys play them. Actually, I think of the three games
they have, I think Detroit's probably the least likely Dallas
wins of those three games. I think Dallas has a
better chance to be the best chance of beating Philly.
(27:53):
I think they have a better chance of beating Kansas
City than they do beating Detroit. I think Detroit is
going to be a hard game for them them to
win on a following Thursday on the road. I just
think that's gonna be really, really tough. A good team
like that, that quality team as well.
Speaker 5 (28:08):
I think the Cowboys passing game gives you a better
shot versus the Lions than some of these other squads.
Some of these other squads, it's hard to throw the
ball against those guys. I think if you could block
the Lions up just a little bit. I think you
could throw it on them, and that's really all you need.
Because I always talk about matchups, common opponents and things
like that. Green Bay's pass rush is like ridiculous, and
(28:28):
they got after you a little bit, but you were
able to throw on them if you could just not
flop around.
Speaker 2 (28:34):
Here's the problem. But here's the problem. Though, here's the problem.
Speaker 3 (28:36):
Though.
Speaker 2 (28:36):
That's the problem. Though for Detroit that is probably the
most balanced offense. Doubts will faced down. So when you
start talking about from that standpoint, now we're back to
that first conversation we had today. Your offense gotta be
perfect because even a good defense, we've seen Detroit put
up points against them. So that's the part where I'm
just like, that's a hard matchup for me to see
(28:57):
the Cowboys winning. But I do think those other two
games I could see a path to that. I've seen
Mahomes this year be a little more normal, so there've
been gained. Well, he wasn't super Mahomes, he was normal,
and you might be able to match him that day.
Speaker 5 (29:12):
You know, I don't know, as long as the Cowboys
can score, right, because I just feel like the Cowboy
defense just gonna be giving points. In my mind, that's
just what against all these people. But as long as
you can score, and I look at Detroit's defense, not
that they're bad, but I think that you can score
because I just think the Cowboy's offense is that good,
you know what I mean. But some of these people
just looking unwhoppable right now.
Speaker 6 (29:33):
And I mean, you've also had your offense scoring against
worse teams and what was the outcome. You're hoping or
trying to hang on to this idea of as long
as the Cowboys can score, which sounds great, and I
agree you want the cow the offensive score, but at
the same time, you've seen plenty of games where they
(29:55):
can be putting up points and it still comes out
with the loss.
Speaker 5 (29:59):
That's why Oversho gotta come be Superman. And it's not fair.
It ain't fair to him at all. But if you
just look at and it's me being optimistic Derek eagleson optimistic,
we were saying this player came up today.
Speaker 6 (30:11):
You're very optimistic.
Speaker 5 (30:12):
I'm a Homer every day, but I see that. I
just think Quinn Williams is gonna do so much. You
finally got somebody that could tear it up.
Speaker 3 (30:20):
In the middle.
Speaker 5 (30:21):
I think Overshown, first of all, just the I don't
wanna say about the people, man, but just you getting
better at linebacker. I think it's gonna be massive. I
went back and overshown.
Speaker 2 (30:30):
In my opinion, Overshowing ain't even the story there. It's
Logan Wilson. Logan Wilson is the reason that you're gonna
be able to see less of some of the linebackers
that have played to this point, where there have been
so many problems. That to me is the difference. And
if whatever you can get out of over Shown and
start to bring him along, that all helps. But getting
Logan Wilson out there, I'm putting a lot on Logan
Wilson'm probably putting more on him than I'm putting on Overshow.
Speaker 5 (30:51):
I looked at his numbers.
Speaker 6 (30:52):
I mean, they're gonna get way better a linebacker, and
I think with the defensive line, now good luck to
the secondary.
Speaker 2 (30:58):
What's happening?
Speaker 5 (30:59):
I look at you, Yeah, I looked at his numbers
last year, Overshow in thirteen gamess like ninety tackles, five
sacks and eight stuff so or some four past to
fl l a man. We could use all that, right,
now and an interception for a down touchdown. We can
use all that right now? What break?
Speaker 3 (31:18):
Break?
Speaker 5 (31:18):
Yes, time too, sure break all right?

Speaker 2 (34:16):
Welcome back. It is the final segment of The Break
live from the SWBC Mortgage studios at the Star. Here
we're going to do in the final segment, let's see
a little self scouting. I'm going to do across the
hall scouting. What we're gonna do is we're gonna talk
about three problems that the Cowboys have had, significant problems
that the Cowboys have had through the first half of
the season. And I'm going to go around the table
(34:37):
and I want you to give me if you were
the person in charge making the decision, what would be
the one solution that you would work on with this
team in order to improve this area. Let's start first
with rush defense. They have been a team that has
given up a lot of rushing yards this year. We've
seen a lot of challenges, even with the addition of
Kenny Clark. What would be the one thing that you
(34:58):
would think should be the solution for them to solve
the rushing defense. Brons Brown, let's start with you on
this one.
Speaker 3 (35:04):
Well, I think that to me that they're going to
try and you know by the moves that they made
with When you.
Speaker 4 (35:12):
Look at going and getting a guy like Quinn Williams,
I think he helps you really on both levels, but
especially he'll help you with the run stuffs. You know,
he's a guy that will be that that player that
takes on the blocks. I mean, these linebackers, it's been
a big, big problem. It's not because of lineman getting
up on these linebackers. These linebackers will overrun blaze, they
will be out of position, they won't read fast enough.
(35:33):
I mean, we could talk about eating up blocks and
all that stuff like we like to do and like, oh,
he'll help this and that and the other. You know,
Vosh was talking about linebackers with instincts, linebackers that play
down hill, linebackers that tackle well, linebackers that don't hesitate.
You know, you're going to try and do that. A
guy like Overshown, he'll play aggressively, you know, Wilson play aggressively,
(35:54):
you know. And you talk about Quinn Williams the way
he plays, you know, keep Kenny Clark in there. Maybe
Now Kenny Clark doesn't get face as many double teams,
so your run defense, you know, and you're getting clowny
playing better on the edge as well as a rockup
some negative plays there.
Speaker 3 (36:09):
So I think the thing is, I've tried to get
better up the middle, and.
Speaker 4 (36:13):
I think in two spots, I have the tackle spot
the linebacker spot. I'm still not trusting what's going on
in safety, but that's what's gonna have to be for
this run defense. It's gonna have to be what happens
in that middle and what happens at that linebacker. And
I think they think they've helped themselves that way.
Speaker 2 (36:29):
Let's go to you.
Speaker 6 (36:31):
The original question.
Speaker 2 (36:42):
Wow, you know how I knew you were doing that
because you're over there doing this and you were smiling
as I like here and the chat talking. But I
know you is that what you're.
Speaker 6 (36:57):
Run defense? Well, how did they saw it?
Speaker 2 (37:00):
I just saw.
Speaker 6 (37:02):
He was.
Speaker 5 (37:04):
You are so annoying, you don't know what the hell
going on.
Speaker 2 (37:08):
Sure, let's let's sell it first.
Speaker 5 (37:11):
Take all the talk for you right ahead.
Speaker 6 (37:12):
I mean Bryan's explanation was I got more expladent. I
agree with that said it was so great. I agree
with the linebacker. I mean, you're gonna get some support
from the medal.
Speaker 5 (37:23):
What he said?
Speaker 3 (37:25):
What about.
Speaker 5 (37:27):
Like exactly which part of what he said did you like?
You know, Derek? What I would do? What changes I
wouldn't make if I was in charge of trying to
fix the run defense right out there. I think you
need to lock down the rotation at edges right. It's
a lot of moving pieces over there. I know coach
white Cotton wants to rotate guys to keep guys fresh
(37:48):
and all this kind of stuff. I don't think you
have the luxury of doing that. I think some players
are much better run defending players than others. Somehow, your
better run defending players. I think donviin ez Rock, who
has definitely stepped up in and shine as a run guy,
and Clowney he looked like an old man early didn't
have a camp that makes a little bit of sense.
But he's definitely come in and locked it down Filer Sam,
(38:10):
I'll hold y'all for the past rush stuff. Maybe when
those guys need a bit of a break, but I
think just locking down the rotation at edge. But also James, Yeah, man,
I think, Man, I gotta see it's been a couple
of weeks. I got to see how how the coaches
view him. I think he's one of those guys, now
you know what I'm saying, like kind of like we're
at with Louis File. I don't think Louis Foule plays bad,
(38:32):
but the coaches may view him a certain kind of way.
I just I want to see how they view James.
But James is definitely a guy you know, if you
need a break, go in play a little bit. I
don't think James is run defense is hurting you in
the way that some others are, but I would hold
him for like past.
Speaker 4 (38:45):
I think he's playing better than Williams and playing better
than Follar. If you're talking about run defense stuff.
Speaker 5 (38:51):
Yeah, for sure. And one more thing too. Coach whitecott
and said something interesting. It was that last coach availability
thing that they did over there on the field with Quinn.
But he was like, these tackles are gonna look different
depending on the pair that it is, right, Quinn is
gonna be different when he's next to Osa versus when
he's different, you know, next to Clark. So we talked
about rundy stuff. We kind of hinted at this yesterday
(39:13):
on yesterday's show there, but I think your best run
defending configuration is Quinn, Williams, Kenny Clark with Donvin Ezeraku
on the outside and Clowney. Now, if you want to
mess around the lay five man.
Speaker 2 (39:27):
Five and then have Overshown and Wilson back at line mellow.
Speaker 5 (39:31):
Show, I would prefine that definitely, But that is something
that we have to think about moving forward.
Speaker 6 (39:37):
What I'm excited for is with Williams coming in, how
he can bring back, hopefully the best out of Kenny Clark,
which we saw glimpses of it at the beginning and
then that slowly or quickly started disappearing. But I think
the combination of those two they're gonna just elevate each
other's game. So I'm really really excited looking forward to
(39:59):
them to especially in the going back to that stopping
the run. The run defense there and with the linebacker position,
you guys already talked about that you can only improve
from there from what you've been having to now. So
I think that combination there, it's going to hopefully put
a stop somehow or not at least have opposing teams
(40:22):
running all over you that you just have no chance.
This is gonna make a better battle for you.
Speaker 2 (40:29):
I think one of the interesting things is we've seen
a lot of for Kenny Clark and FOROSA teams deciding hey,
we're just gonna double those guys and we will dig
them out of a hole and create space for our runner.
They can't do that anymore. Quinn Williams makes you have
to double him and he will still beat the double team.
That's the interesting part. He's gonna force you to double
him and they'll still beat the double team, Which is
(40:50):
gonna mean now Kenny Clark, Osa, They're all gonna now
be facing one guy. And the question is, I don't
think those guys get moved around Kenny Clark. I don't
see him getting moved around by one guy. And I
think that's where it makes such a huge difference having
Quinn Williams in this lineup because if all those other
guys now have one guy to beat, I think when
(41:10):
you're gonna be able to see the value of them
playing aggressive style of defense where you're taking your gap
and you're getting a feel and you're gonna start to
see more tackles for losses. I think that's gonna be
the biggest difference in this one game.
Speaker 6 (41:21):
Williams, he's a big guy, Like I see him on
TV and stuff and then seeing him in first so
you're like, wow, he is so big.
Speaker 2 (41:29):
So he got nasty big like he's a big dude.
Speaker 6 (41:33):
He has power.
Speaker 2 (41:34):
Yeah, no doubt.
Speaker 6 (41:35):
That's another thing that is exciting to have. And I
can't wait.
Speaker 5 (41:39):
I can't wait.
Speaker 6 (41:39):
And I hope you're right that they beat the Raiders
so that we move on and come back to that
stretch with some excitement there. And hope because if they don't.
Speaker 2 (41:50):
Real quick before we're in the show, because I'm not
going to get to these other self scouting things. But
let me ask this question, how do you think that
or better yet? At what point? If Dallas wins and
continues to win, at what point do you start to believe.
Speaker 5 (42:07):
I'm dead inside?
Speaker 2 (42:08):
So no, what I mean is, Okay, they beat the Raiders.
I don't think any of us necessarily like, okay, things
have changed. They beat Philly, Does it change for you?
They beat Kansas City? Does it change for you? Beat Detroit?
At what point? Normal saying? You know what I'm saying.
At what point do you get to the point where
you're like, no, this team is for real. They are
different than what they were in the first time.
Speaker 5 (42:28):
It depends on how the defense plays. If you win
those games forty five to forty two, then you just
gonna play against Minnesota and win their game forty five
to forty two. But if you hold the Chiefs, Eagles,
Lions to like twenty points and you do your forty,
we can talk. Then are you holding the fifteen is
a long million? I'm being excited if you hold those guys.
(42:51):
It depends on the defense play. If the defense goes crazy,
totally different convers.
Speaker 2 (42:55):
What about you? Where do you start believing and it's
not hope anymore?
Speaker 4 (43:00):
Into the city beat you know, win the next three
games and then you know, and I'll take my chances
in Detroit. I'm not feeling like it's great, but you know,
