(00:02):
Hello, mister and missus Brookings Harbor and all
the fishing boats at sea. I'm cousin Bruce
Ellis. And I'm Kat Liddell. And this is
the Insider Report.
So let your ears do the walk in
as we fill you in on what's going
on in the Brookings Harbor area and beyond.
Well, hello. Hello. Hello. And welcome to this
week's show that keeps you in the know.
Hi, Kat. Hi, Bruce. Last weekend of the

(00:25):
the your little Yeah. Play there. Closing weekend
for Squall. It was absolutely incredible. We had
a few sold out houses, and, we had
we did our final day. We picked up
the set, like, our box set with flats
and everything and moved it, like, with a
working sink to, the Pistol River Friendship Hall
for our last That's right. You did so
that we could pack more people in. So,
yeah, we had, even more people than our

(00:46):
last couple of of show dates because that's
just a smaller capacity in the event center.
Yeah. And, yeah, it went really, really good.
I really liked using that space. It was
really, really nice being out there. It'd been
a while since I'd been out there. I
know. I've been there in a while either.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But it it was
incredible. And then we did a first time
for us ever, like, we did, like, a
q and a with the cast and crew
afterwards. And and people had tons and tons

(01:08):
of questions for them. Like, how we put
it all together. So it was cool. People
are really curious about how that all works,
which is which is fun. Yeah. It was
a success. Yeah. That's what that's great. We
said bye to Chloe and Andrew today. Yeah.
And then back to LA, but, you know,
they're we'll we'll see them again. Oh, yeah.
She'll They always try to get up here
whenever they're able to. So yeah. Especially when
you got a play going on and you

(01:28):
need somebody. Yeah. That's right. Yeah. Works out
good. Good deal. So So it was good.
How about you all? You had a break
this week. This was hit between the Blues
Fest, Yeah. The Bigfoot Bluesfest, and now it's
gonna be the Piratefest coming up. So this
is Piratefest,
heck week as we call it. Yeah. Yeah.
Arr. It's what I yes. Yeah. It'll start.
I'm taping today. I got Monday. I'll go

(01:51):
do some emails or whatever and everything. Then
it's all like Donkey Kong Tuesday on. I've
gotta go down and mark.
We've got z. 90 vendors. That's Two stages
like always. Yep. So there'll be a whole
village on one end and a whole village
on the other end that has everything. Mhmm.
Bar bar, you know, everything. You know, beer
gardens. Everything's all equaled out but spread out.

(02:13):
You know? So yeah. So by the time
you get from one end to the other,
you're ready. You're ready. So food, whatever the
heck. Everything is down there on the same.
So so but it's a lot of fun
setting it all up. I mean, people just
they'd have no idea unless they've done it
before, but there's the thousands of hours that
me and Chrissy put on doing on the
entertainment side, me on the vendor side. That's
a lot of prep to do an event.

(02:34):
A lot going on, but the Pirate Fest,
these other ones are just, like, a walk
in the park compared to what it is.
Yeah. It's a big one. It's a big
one. That's why you see me when you
see me on Friday after it's all done
and flow in afternoon. The cannon goes off
and it's going. Well, Jason is all set
to sub for you on the Monday after
that
too. So so you can get a day

(02:55):
off. I'll tell you what. I even have
the summary and the, script already written out
Beautiful. For you guys, and I'm gonna send
it because I got everything done this weekend
so that you didn't have yeah. Because I
kept I I it's all pirate all week
long. You know? Yeah. And it's really great.
The whole town's getting into it and everything
like that. We've seen it. All these people
are sprouting up little pirate things and everything.
So, yeah, it's good. We brought this is

(03:15):
a fourteenth year. It would have been the
fifteenth without COVID and everything. So, really, fifteen
years of pirates around here is, like, it'll
rub off on the town. It will in
the community, and it and it brings a
lot here. So I I dig it. It's
great, and it's a good it's a fun
thing. So but I will be giving a
little bit, and I'll give the times and
everything like that later on. But before we
get going here, hope you all had a
good time this weekend because, yeah, the the

(03:37):
art on the coast was happening this weekend.
Yeah. That too. Yeah. Yes. Give the give
us a break and let the port keep
on busy, so that was nice. I saw
that down there. It was looking good. Nice.
Yeah. Yeah. So, anyways, I hope everybody had
some fun this weekend and getting ready for
this next weekend because it's crazy all over.
We'll be telling you all kinds of stuff
that's going on. But before we go, I'd
like to thank the Oregon South Coast fishermen,

(03:57):
otherwise known as the Castaways and Oregon Coast
VIP Marketing for sponsoring the insider report. And
if you'd like to sponsor our show or
one of the other fine shows here at
KCIW,
all you gotta do is go to kciw.0rg,
and you will be on your way. And
speaking of them crazy castaways,
our favorite castaway, Dave Keen, is on board
with the fishing report. How you doing today?

(04:17):
Good, Bruce. Yeah. Nice to see you. Nice
to see you, Kat. Yeah. Just got back
from your family thing you guys do every
year up at the trin what were Trinity
Lake. Yeah. Get back there. That was so
it was fabulous. So we had a great
time catching bass and hanging out with our
grandkids and cousins. There's so many little little
new babies everywhere.
Yeah. So a lot a lot of fun.

(04:38):
But, now I'm back here in Brookings anxious
to get back into the big pond as
we call it out here because there are
a lot of things happening. And I wanna
thank you for the Pirate Festival because that
always kicks in the tuna for us. That's
what it does. That's what you said. You
know what's coming? I said tuna is every
area. Yeah. Yes. I need no official report
for that. No. It's it's tuna fever. In
fact, we're some of our guys are gonna

(04:58):
go out and explore tomorrow. And it might
even be a couple out today because once
tuna comes within 40 miles, I know that's
a poke, you know, in a boat, but
40 miles and less is actually pretty pretty
close. And I did hear a report today
that there's tuna water within 20 miles of
Brookings, and that's gonna really spread quickly. Oh,
okay. That's that's that's relatively close. So you'll
probably see some tuna during the pirate festival

(05:19):
coming. Oh, yeah. I see a few every
time. Yeah. Yeah. What are they are they
able to catch how many? I mean, it's
ridiculous. Oh, yeah. You can get 25 each
if you're Gotcha. Packing the boat. I mean
Jump in buckets. Yeah. Uh-huh.
It's fun. It's so much fun. It's funny,
wasn't it? So but as far as other
fish, we still have hatchery coho season is
still open until August 24. So you can
go out and troll around and catch a

(05:41):
hatchery coho, actually, two of them and keep
them.
However, if it's a wild
coho or a Chinook of any kind, you
have to kick it loose. So there's all
these rules and regs that you've gotta follow.
Yeah. And so I try to keep our
kids Don't be a Chinook. Kick the Chinook.
That's right. So,
other than that, let's see. Pacific Halibut is
open, and we're there's some nice ones starting

(06:02):
to come in,
from the fishery there off of Bird Island
and also down near the border.
California halibut are showing up now, and you
can keep 25 of those a day if
you got into them. And they're actually very
tasty. I caught one a couple weeks ago,
and, I actually preferred it over the Pacific
halibut. It's interesting note. Mhmm. Five you can
keep five rockfish now instead of four. That's

(06:24):
began July 1. Two
lingcod,
or you can also keep a cabozon.
But the one cabozon counts towards your bag
limit of five rockfish.
To make it even simpler, you can catch
four rockfish and one cabozon. And that is
considered a bag limit of five. Can you
add on your two ling cod?

(06:45):
I'll raise you a trout. I'll raise you
a And maybe a coho. A coho. The
food or a Pacific Alabets. So Yeah. Yeah.
There's quite quite the variety that Fish fish
boat there. We can get out there. Yeah.
Yeah. Full house. Yeah. I have one.
So, yeah, it makes us,
get out there and and do it once
again. Okay. And would you guys got a
meeting coming up here? We do. Okay. August

(07:07):
20 is our club meeting at the library
at 05:30PM.
We have a guest speaker
from the,
Rowdy Creek Fish Hatchery
that, operates on the Smith River. They're coming
in to give us a whole lot of
new
information on how they count fish, all the
sonar they use to get the fish going
up river so they get an accurate count
of Chinook, steelhead,

(07:28):
and whatnot. So we're anxious to see that
one. So August 20. Okay. Library. Library. August
20. There you go. Katz Territory. There you
go. And you got it. There you go.
Be there. Be square. That's right. Well, thank
you so much. That you got it. I
know you got it because you're still catching
up here. I know. I'm still I'm still
what am I what am I forgetting? I
well, people are still catching surf perch. So
people are able to do that for sure.

(07:49):
That, so that was cool. Oh, good. Yeah.
Good. Good. Yeah. Yeah. So I feel like
I'm forgetting something, but I think we're good.
The river nothing still had or oh, the
River Falls Chinook will start happening soon because
they're showing up now on the Rogue River,
Falls Chinook. Mhmm. So there are people who
live that's that's the bumper boats when you
have hundreds of boats Yeah. Pulling around together
and gets Okay. Gets interesting. It does. It

(08:10):
does. Let's be friends and play friendly. Oh,
I'm trying. I sure it has its moments.
It does. It does.
But it's good to see you too. And,
glad
to be back. Gotta catch up. So no
dancing today, but, hey, say hello to the
missus and go have some fun. Will do.
Good chat. Thanks thanks, guys. Yeah. Go reboot
from that vacation. Reboot from vacation mode. Reboot.

(08:32):
Yep. Bye. Bye.
Always fun to have Dave here with the
fishing report. Absolutely. Good time. Let's catch him
out on the boat there sometime. You know,
that's always fun too. I know you. It's
like the the the white whale for you
to get him back on the boat, like,
doing a remote call to us. Uh-huh. Maybe
that'll happen one day. Yeah. Well, he's close
when he's close enough. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Absolutely. Tune a thing sounds like it. Yeah.

(08:53):

Rivers Film Festival in the, forest room at
the library.

(14:07):
This event is managed by the Wild Rivers
Film Festival. And if you want more information
or tickets, you can go to wildriversfilmfestival.com.
And if you have any questions about any
upcoming programs, events, services offered by the Checo
Library, of course, you can always follow them
on Facebook.
You can, subscribe to their monthly newsletter at
checolibrary.org.
Check out their events calendar there, or you

(14:28):
can always just give them a call and
ask what's going on at (541)
469-7738.
Sweet. Yeah. Hey. The Pirate Fest. Speaking of
the Pirates of the Pacific Festival, which we
were, it is. It's gonna be great this
year. We expanded the area out, so it's
it's bigger than it ever has been. Even
when the old days when we first started

(14:49):
it and we had that little part of
the parking lot right there Mhmm. It's now
extended all the way out 45 feet. So
we got another lane Wow. If we go
out there. So it's gonna be two more
lanes to the whole thing, and it's gonna
be you.
And on the on the eighth, it opens
at noon. On the ninth, it opens at
ten, and on the tenth at 10AM.
And it runs pretty late. I mean, like,

(15:10):
it, it runs, like, to 10:00. We got
music going, you know, as long as it
goes and everything, and the vendors are allowed
to close down everything, but we keep the
music going a little bit later on this
one. So, yeah, that's Chrissy's thing. She wanted
to put that in there, and it's been
working successfully. Let the people finish their beverages
before, you know, they go and relax for
a minute before they go. And it has
that always works. Wine for a bit. Yep.

(15:30):
Yep. But we've got a little special thing
going on. It's always the same as usual.
You know? We got kids' activities. We got
live music on all those two stages, the
whole nine yards. We've got the reenactors going
down there. CCP or CPP is going to
be down there,
doing a whole bunch of stuff in it.
We're gonna take the grassy area and turn
it into, like, a little
village with
up. It's gonna be really cool, you know,

(15:51):
little pirate village down there on the end
and all that good stuff. One of the
stays down there going. But the one thing
we're doing different this year besides the side
is
the maid the mermaids are called the maidens
of Poseidon. So this year, me and Christy
wanna do a commercial, you know, for things.
So we're gonna tape a commercial, but her
mother is our face painter and everything like
that and her sister. And we will be

(16:11):
getting painted up. Mhmm. I'll be painted up
as Poseidon. I've got the merman tail. Wow.
Christy got me merman tail. I've got some
and then when I'm all done and so
I'll be there. We'll be doing that about
01:00 on Saturday, one to two. I wanna
come down and watch us do that. And
Mhmm. Christy and I are both gonna be
in there. She's gonna be coming in as
as a, she's got a mermaid thing she's
doing, you know, and everything. So we'll be

(16:32):
in there together, taping a commercial, like I
said, and then,
getting photo ops, of course. But the cool
thing about it is when I get out,
this is waterproof paint that her mom's putting
on us. Cool. So when I get out,
then I'm gonna put on my regular pirate
outfit, but keep the paint on the face
and put the hat on so it looks
like right out of the Pirates of the
Caribbean type thing. So so that's what's happening
this weekend. When it's all done getting the

(16:52):
this week done Yeah. Then I'm really happy
about it. Yeah. Yeah. Then you get to
rest. So we'll see you there.
Alright.
Well, also coming up in the next couple
of weeks here, the Travel Oregon Welcome Center
in Brookings located at Crissy Field State Recreation
Site that's down at 14433
Highway 101 in Brookings.
On the August 16 at 02:00, they're gonna

(17:15):
be hosting Bill Gorham, a marine biologist,
on the topic of beachcombing and tide pooling.
And then on Saturday, August 23 at 2PM,
they're gonna have the Tony Land Band doing
Americana style original music. There you go. Alright.
And now it's time for quotes from famous
people with cousin Bruce. Yeah. Here are a
few quotes from director Alfred Hitchcock. He was
born 08/13/1899.

(17:37):
He says, blondes make the best victims.
They're like virgin snow that shows up the
bloody footprints.
It says, the more successful the villain, the
more successful the picture.
He goes, a length of film should be
directly related to the endurance of a human
bladder.
And last but not least, he said, I
never said all actors are cattle. What I

(17:58):
said was all actors should be treated like
cattle.
Hope you I hope you enjoyed this week's
quotes from Alfred Hitchcock with Cousin Bruce. Until
next week, have a great one. Yeah.
That sounds like Alfred Hitchcock. Yeah. He had
some,
conflicts with people here. Oh, yes. He did.
Yeah. Yeah. Well, there you go.
The you know.

(18:20):
Alright. Well, hey, the Lucky Seven Casino is
gonna be presenting a comedy night with Carl
Lee coming up on the August 9 at
8PM.
And this and then they have a feature
act, Jason Webb, opening for the headliner. Again,
that's Carl Lee. Doors open for this show
at 7PM. The show starts at eight, and
tickets are available online at eventbrite.com,
or you can get them at the door.

(18:41):
And it is a casino, so you must
be 21 years or older to attend.
That's right. And, hey, the Micro Mania Midget
Wrestling is back, and it's gonna be at
the Elks Lodge,
in Brookings, August 10.
Let's see. Age restrictions, 21. Yes. Of course.
Let's see. Doors open at five. Showtime's at
six.
You get to get admission tickets, you gotta

(19:02):
call Billy Blade at (805)
260-5586.
He'll give you all the details. So there
you go. And it says tickets are nonrefundable
unless the show gets canceled. Mhmm. So So
there you go. Alright. And then the Checo
Pelican Players located at 1240 Checo Avenue in
Brookings are hosting Puppeteers for Fears this year
on the August 12 from seven to about

(19:22):
10PM.
Fresh off their celebrated national tour of Cthulhu
the musical in 2024,
Puppeteers for Fears, the world's premier all puppet
horror and science fiction musical comedy troupe, is
presenting a terrifying and hilarious new work called
Robopocalypse
the Musical.
And this is playing in cities throughout the
Western US on the company's twenty twenty five

(19:43):
summer tour. Years in the making, the show
is a hilarious cyberpunk escapade
exploring impacts of the meteoric rise of artificial
intelligence on a world still struggling to remember
its email logins.
The show will be performed entirely with hand
and rod, I e Muppet style puppets in
a live band. It tells the story of
Jolie Daniels, teen hacker extraordinaire,

(20:04):
whose efforts to build a sentient robot as
a means to connect with her tech barren
father accidentally birth a malevolent artificial intelligence that
she alone has the ability to stop if
she can survive the army of self driving
cars and web connected smart gadgets that the
AI has weaponized against her. The run time
for this is approximately two hours with one
intermission.

(20:24):
And they do have a note for folks,
since they do only visit once a year.
Attendees should be aware that though this is
a puppet show, it is not a children's
show. This material is r rated, and children
should only be brought at their parents' discretion.
Tickets for all performances are available at www.puppeteersforfears.com.
Yeah. Don't let the kids know about that

(20:44):
one. Yeah. Well, you know.
That's your discretion. You're the parent. You know
what's best. Yeah. That's right. Mhmm. Hey, CC
police department presents national night out. This will
be happening on the twelfth, 5PM to 07:30PM
at Beachfront Park. It's a free event. There'll
be a barbecue party, live music, k nine
demos, vehicle tours, jump houses, and raffle prizes.

(21:05):
There you go. And then the twenty sixth
annual Lucky Seven Casino
PPA benefit car show, that's the partnership for
the performing arts,
is happening. And pre registration show and shine
is happening on the August 15 from four

Real Weird History with Bushwhacker Bruce. Roy. Good
day. Good day, mates. Bushwhacker Bruce here. Welcome
to this bit of Real History for your
knowledge pleasure. Did you know that a huge

(23:30):
wave of beer flooded the streets of London?
It's true, and here's the story. On 10/17/1814,
a large iron ring on a fermentation vat
at the Horseshoe Brewery snapped. The brewery located
in a densely part plated slum held a
vast quantity of porter in the vat. The
initial rupture caused a chain reaction leading to
the bursting of other vats and barrels. Well,

(23:51):
the resulting wave of beer estimated to be
15 feet high was powerful enough to knock
down a brewery wall and flood the surrounding
streets and buildings.
The force of the flood was so great
that it sent bricks flying and destroyed two
houses.
The flood tragically claimed the lives of eight
people. Victims included a three year old girl,
several mourners at a wake, a teenage servant,
and a mother and daughter having tea, or

(24:14):
a brewery's location in a pure area with
many residents lived in the basements, and sellers
exaggerated the impact of the blood of the
flood.
The incident was ruled as an act of
God, and the brewery was not held liable.
The brewery did face significant financial losses, but
they were able to recoup some of the
cost by receiving a waiver on exercise taxes
on the lost beer. The Horseshoe Brewery continued

(24:35):
to operate until 1921,
but the disaster led to the phasing out
of large wooden vats in a favor of
lined concrete vats.
The area around the brewery was eventually redeveloped
in a new street where much of the
destruction of court was removed. Well, I hope
you enjoy this week's burial history of yours
truly, Bushwacker Bruce. Till next time, always keep
it real.

(24:57):
Mm-mm.
And with that note, we gotta bring it
to the end. Yeah. We're good. Well done
here. We did it. Finish it with Bushwagens.
