Speaker 1 (00:00):
You are listening to Radical with David Platt, a
weekly podcast with sermons andmessages from pastor, author and
teacher David Platt.
Well, if you have a Bible Ihope you or somebody around you
does that you can look on with.
Let me invite you to open withme to 1 Corinthians, chapter 6.
1 Corinthians, chapter 6.

(00:23):
1 Corinthians, chapter 6.
I remember that day like it wasyesterday.
I was a junior in college andmy girlfriend for the previous
three years was coming back oneafternoon from a conference much
like this and my plan was toask her to marry me that night.

(00:48):
I picked up an engagement ringthat morning.
It pretty much cost me all themoney I had.
I knew I did not want to loseit, so I had a few hours to hold
onto it and not lose it.
I had one errand to run.

(01:09):
I needed to play a song thatnight as part of the whole
asking her to marry me.
And this was before the days ofSpotify or Apple Music.
We had these things called CDsthat you had to buy from a store
.
So I planned to go to the mall,to a music store, to get a CD

(01:35):
with this song on it.
But I was so concerned thatthis was the day some dude was
going to rob me in the mall andtake this ring I had with me.
So I found the heaviest, thickest coat I had.
It wasn't that cold outside, but I put the coat on.
It had a pocket right here.

(01:56):
I unzipped the pocket, I putthe ring in the pocket, zipped
the pocket back up, I put thecoat on, I got out of the car
and I walked into the store withmy head down, not wanting to
make eye contact with anyone, just get in, get the CD, get out
.
So I get to the music store.
I'm looking around for the CDand I can't find it anywhere.

(02:19):
So I go over to the woman whoworked the store and I said
ma'am, I'm looking for this CD,could you help me find it?
And she's like sure, why do youwant that CD?
I'm not really in the mood atthis point for small talk, but
she says or she asked me thatquestion.

(02:40):
So I said well, I'm gettingengaged tonight and I'd like to
use this song from that CD.
And she said well, do you havethe ring with you?
I was like, why all thequestions?
Just help me find the CD.
I'm starting to think I don'twant to tell her I've got the
ring with me, but I'm not goingto lie.

(03:01):
So I'm like yes, yes, ma'am,I've got the ring with me.
She was like well, can I see it?
I'm like, no, like I don't wantto show you the ring, it's not
for you, it's for somebody else, like.
So she's like come on, pleaseCan I see it?
So I'm like, okay.
So I turn my back to we're inthe corner of the store at this

(03:21):
point, turn my back to everybodyelse.
I in the corner of the store atthis point, turn my back to
everybody else.
I unzip the pocket, I pull outthe ring, I just kind of lean
over and I show it to her.
And she's like wow, that'sbeautiful.
Then she rises up and she sayshey, everybody, this guy's
getting engaged, come check outthis ring.
At this point I'm just lookingfor the dude who wants to rob me

(03:44):
, like I'll just throw.
For the dude who wants to robme, like I'll just throw it to
you, don't even no need for aphysical altercation, just take
it.
Everybody in the store iscoming over to look at the ring.
I'm like ma'am, will you pleasejust give me the CD so I can
get out of here.
And finally she did.
I took that ring in my hand andran out of there.
Everything about my life changedthat day the way I thought, the

(04:09):
way I talked, the way I walked, the way I acted, the way I
interacted with others.
Everything changed when Irealized what a valuable
possession I had with me.
I had with me and that is thepicture I want to put in your

(04:31):
mind as we talk about the HolySpirit tonight, the third person
of the Trinity, father, son andHoly Spirit.
And if you are a follower ofJesus, the Bible says you have

(04:53):
the Holy Spirit living inside ofyou as your possession.
Read it in 1 Corinthians 6, 19.
Do you not know I think we'llhave it on the screen that your
body is a temple of the HolySpirit within you, whom you have

(05:18):
from God?
Your body is a temple where theHoly Spirit lives within you.
The Holy Spirit of God dwellsin you, and I think most of you

(05:44):
or maybe I could put it this way, most of us in this room do not
understand or realize howawesome this is, and I want to
submit to you that Satan wantsit that way, to you, that Satan

(06:09):
wants it that way.
Francis Chan in his book on theHoly Spirit Forgotten God wrote
if I were Satan and my ultimategoal was to thwart God's kingdom
and purposes, one of my mainstrategies would be to get
churchgoers to ignore the HolySpirit, churchgoers to ignore

(06:31):
the Holy Spirit, and I believethat's exactly what Satan has
done with most of us.
And I've got a relative fewminutes tonight to try to
communicate how awesome this is,so that you might realize not
what, but who is living in youin a way that totally changes

(06:54):
everything about the way youthink and desire and act and
interact and speak and spendyour life.
So here's what I'm going to do,and I'll just add this was not
my plan coming in to thisconference.
I had a whole different messageplanned, but yesterday the Lord

(07:16):
redirected me.
Through the course of beinghere, I stayed up most all night
because I want to show you 50ways the Holy Spirit
supernaturally transforms yourlife, and just so you know, I
had to cut it down to 50.
So you're welcome.

(07:39):
The only other time I have donea message with this many points
was at Cross five years ago, sowe're going to roll with it
again.
I want you, over the next fewminutes to be overwhelmed, like
completely overwhelmed, withwhat it means to have the Holy
Spirit inside of you.

(07:59):
And if you're not a Christianyet, maybe you're feigning
Christianity, like Joanna'stestimony yesterday.
But you will say tonight, inthe next few minutes, I am tired
of playing games, I want theHoly Spirit in me Now.
Obviously we're not gonna spenda lot of time on each of these
points.
We're gonna go pretty fastthrough most of them, camp out

(08:22):
on just a few of them and if youwanna try and take notes, I'm
gonna have everything up here onthe screen.
So good luck, here we go.
Number one you ready for this?
And I should caveat these firsttwo are just generally what the
Holy Spirit does in the world.
So here we go.
One the Holy Spirit gives life.
The Holy Spirit gives life.

(08:42):
I read this in my Bible readingtwo days ago.
First verses in the BibleGenesis 1, 1 and 2.
In the beginning God createdthe heavens and the earth.
The earth was without form andvoid, darkness was over the face
of the deep and the Spirit ofGod was hovering over the face
of the waters.
The Spirit of God involved increation and in the verses that
follow, he gives life in such away that the book of Job later

(09:05):
says, chronologically around thetime of Genesis the Spirit of
God has made me, the breath ofthe Almighty gives me life.
It's the Spirit of God, by thecommon grace of God, who gives
life to all of us in this world.
And number two the Holy Spiritsustains life.
So Job 34, 14, and 15, speakingof God, says if he should set

(09:29):
his heart to it and gather tohimself his spirit and his
breath, all flesh would perishtogether and man would return to
dust.
So if God were to withdraw hisspirit, you and I would be done
Now.
This is, as I mentioned, something that applies to all
people, not just Christians.

(09:50):
But think about this Christian.
The same Spirit who washovering over the waters before
the world even began, the sameSpirit who sustains life for
over eight billion people onthis planet.
That Spirit lives inside of you, right where you're sitting
right now.
That'll knock you out of yourseat if you really think about

(10:13):
it, and we're just too in Allright.
Number three the Holy Spirittestifies to the one who is life
.
In John 15, 26, jesus tells Hisdisciples when the helper comes
, who I will send to you fromthe Father, the Spirit of truth
who proceeds from the Father.
He will bear witness or testifyabout me.
We know about Jesus because theHoly Spirit testifies to us

(10:37):
about Jesus.
And it's the Holy Spirit whoenables you, number four, to
confess Jesus as Lord.
1 Corinthians 12, 3,.
I want you to understand no onespeaking in the Spirit of God
ever says Jesus is cursed.
No one can say Jesus is Lordexcept in the Holy Spirit.
Do you see that the only wayyour eyes can be opened to the

(11:02):
glory of Jesus and your mouth toconfess him as Lord of all and
Lord of your life, that onlyhappens by the Holy Spirit.
If you confess Jesus is Lord,it's the Holy Spirit who made
that happen.
You can't say that trulywithout Him.

(11:24):
So now I'm going to start touse the word you in these
pictures of the Holy Spirit, because I want you to feel this,
the wonder of the Holy Spiritand what he does in you and for
you.
So it's the Holy Spirit, numberfive, who gives you new birth.

(11:46):
Jesus tells Nicodemus in John 3,you must be born again.
Nicodemus says what do you mean?
And Jesus answered truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is
born of water and the Spirit, hecannot enter the kingdom of God
.
That which is born of the fleshis flesh.
That which is born of theSpirit is Spirit.
Do not marvel that.
I said to you you must be bornagain.
The wind blows where it wishes.

(12:11):
You hear it sound.
You don't know where it comesfrom or where it goes.
So it is with everyone who isborn of the Spirit.
For every follower of Jesus inthis room, you have a story of a
moment where your eyes wereopened to see Jesus as Savior
and Lord.
It was the Holy Spirit who wasdoing that.
You didn't even realize it.
It was the Holy Spirit of Godwho was making that happen,

(12:32):
giving you birth.
The Holy Spirit did that, gaveyou entirely new birth, which
leads to number six.
The Holy Spirit gives you newlife.
Check this out Romans 8, 11.
If the Spirit of Him who raisedJesus from the dead dwells in
you, he who raised Christ fromthe dead, christ Jesus from the
dead will also give life to yourmortal bodies through His

(12:54):
Spirit.
Who dwells in you?
The Spirit, he's the one whoraised Jesus from the dead.
The Holy Spirit is the one whotook Jesus' dead body and, after
three days, brought it to lifeand that same Holy Spirit will
give life to you in your bodyAgain.

(13:18):
Just think about it, rightwhere you're sitting right now.
The same Spirit who broughtJesus back to life is dwelling
inside of you right now, givingyou spiritual life.
Holy Spirit gives you new lifeevery single day.
Number seven the Holy Spirittestifies to your adoption into
God's family.
So just a few verses later, inRomans 8, 15, paul writes you

(13:47):
did not receive the spirit ofslavery to fall back into fear.
You've received the spirit ofadoption as sons by whom we cry
Abba, father.
The Spirit Himself testifies, bears witness with our spirit
that we are children of God.
The Spirit decrees you're anadopted child of God.
The Spirit says that you callthe sovereign, holy, omnipotent,

(14:11):
infinitely glorious God of theuniverse, dad, father.
I think about all my kids, 18years old down to two years old.
I think about the pride I feeland say that's my son, that's my
daughter.

(14:31):
The Holy Spirit says that toyour daughter You're his son,
you're his child.
Do not listen to who the worldsays you are.
Listen to who the Holy Spiritsays you are.
Do not ground your identity inwhat other people think or say

(14:55):
about you.
Ground your identity in whatthe Holy Spirit thinks and says
about you, as a treasure of God,as His child, then so see the
unity of the Spirit with ourspirit here, which then leads to
number eight.
The Holy Spirit comes to live inyou.

(15:15):
So we've already seen this in 1Corinthians, chapter 6, but
this is what God had promisedcenturies before this In Ezekiel
, chapter 36, I will give you anew heart and a new spirit I
will put within you.
I will remove the heart ofstone from your flesh.
I'll give you a heart of flesh.
I will put my spirit within you, which is why Peter's first

(15:37):
proclamation of the gospel endswith these words in Acts 2.38.
Peter said to them Repent andbe baptized, every one of you,
in the name of Jesus Christ, forthe forgiveness of your sins,
and you will receive the gift ofthe Holy Spirit.
What a gift, are you serious?
The Holy Spirit.
I receive the Holy Spirit, godhimself in me.

(16:00):
Receive the Holy Spirit, GodHimself in me.
Oh, we do not come to Jesus toget health or wealth or
prosperity or comfort or stuff.
We come to Jesus to get God andwe receive Him, god Himself in
our lives.
All right, I've got gotta pickup the pace here.

(16:23):
Well, number nine how much time?
Oh, all right, number nine whatdoes the Holy Spirit do in you?
So the Holy Spirit convicts youof sin.
John 16, seven and eight.
Nevertheless, I tell you thetruth it's to your advantage
that I go away, for if I do notgo away, the helper talking

(16:46):
about the Holy Spirit will notcome to you.
Conviction comes from the HolySpirit, who helps us turn from
sin.
Praise God for conviction ofsin that keeps us from death and
judgment and not just convictsus of sin.
Number 10, holy Spirit sets youfree from sin.

(17:06):
2 Corinthians 3, 17.
Now, the Lord is the Spirit.
Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
Where the Holy Spirit isFreedom to experience the life
God made you to live.
And number 11, the Holy Spiritsets you free from condemnation.
Do not hang your head low, christian.
There is therefore now nocondemnation for those who are

(17:29):
in Christ Jesus, for the law ofthe Spirit of life has set you
free in Christ Jesus from thelaw of sin and death.
The Holy Spirit sets you freefrom condemnation, sin and death
.
Later, in Romans 8, the HolySpirit puts your sinful nature
to death.
Romans 8, 13, christian, youare not a slave to sin anymore.

(18:00):
Sin does not have reign overyou.
You have reign over sin by thepower of the Holy Spirit inside
you.
You are not conquered by sin.
You are a conqueror of sin bythe Holy Spirit in you.
Do not believe the lies of theadversary that you'll just never

(18:21):
get over this sin.
You have the one who hasdefeated sin and the grave
living inside of you His Spirit.
Holy Spirit, put your sinfulnature to death.
Number 13, the Holy Spiritwashes, justifies and sanctifies
you.
1 Corinthians, chapter 6, verse13,.
You're washed, sanctified, justified in the name of the

(18:42):
Lord, jesus Christ and by theSpirit of our God.
It's the Spirit of God whomakes you holy.
More specifically, number 14,the Holy Spirit transforms you
into the image of Jesus.
Listen to 2 Corinthians, 3.18,.
We all, with unveiled facebeholding the glory of the Lord,
are being transformed into thesame image, from one degree of
glory to another.
For this comes from the Lord, who is the.

(19:04):
This is stunning.
This is stunning, transformedfrom one degree of glory to
another every day.
Yes, holy Spirit, do that in me.

(19:27):
And how does that happen?
Number 15, the Holy Spirit takesall that belongs to Jesus and
reveals it to you.
In John 16, 14, talking aboutthe Holy Spirit, jesus says he
will glorify me, for he willtake what is mine and declare it
to you.
All that the Father has is mine.
Therefore, I said that he willtake what is mine and declare it
to you.

(19:48):
Do you hear this?
The Holy Spirit takes all thatbelongs to Jesus how much
belongs to Jesus?
Everything and he passes it onto you.
You and Jesus has all that theFather has.
This is amazing.
You and I invited to share inall that Jesus and the Father,

(20:09):
god, the Son God, the Father, have, which leads to number 16.
I really have to speed it up.
I'm just going to give you thereferences for these next ones.
The Holy Spirit reveals who Godis and all he gives to you.
It's 1 Corinthians, 2, 10through 12.
It's probably going to getharder if you're taking notes.
I put some of the key words inall caps to maybe make it easier

(20:30):
.
I don't know.
I'm going to do my best to helpyou.
Number 17, the Holy Spirit givesyou peace in an anxious world.
Listen to that good news.
Romans 8, 6 says the HolySpirit sets your mind in a world
of anxiety on life and peace.
Number 18, the Holy Spiritgives you joy that transcends
suffering, the joy of the HolySpirit in the middle.

(20:53):
1 Thessalonians 1 says ofsevere affliction.
And number 19, the Holy Spiritgives you hope that overcomes
despair by the power of the HolySpirit.
Romans 15, 13 says you willabound like overflow with hope.
Then Romans 5,.
Number 20, the Holy Spirit poursout God's love into your heart

(21:15):
Every day.
That's what the Holy Spiritdoes.
He just pours out the love ofGod all over your heart.
You're living under a waterfallevery day.
The Holy Spirit pouring God'slove into your heart.
Number 21, the Holy Spiritcomforts you.
That's what his name means thecomforter, the helper, who comes
alongside you in this weary, fallen world.

(21:39):
Number 22, the Holy Spiritremoves fear from you.
God says to his people in theOld Testament Haggai my spirit
is among you, do not be afraidof anything, because you have my
spirit among you.
And then, in the New Testament, god has not given us a spirit
of timidity, spirit of power, love and self-discipline.

(21:59):
It's the Holy Spirit whoremoves fear from you.
Number 23, the Holy Spirithelps you by interceding for you
.
How incredible is this?
Romans 8, 26 and 27 says theSpirit helps us in our weakness.
We don't know what we ought topray for, but the Spirit
intercedes for us with groans, the words that cannot express.
The Spirit intercedes for thesaints, in accordance with God's

(22:22):
will.
The Holy Spirit intercedes, stands in the gap for you.
Number 24, holy Spirit guidesyou to truth.
John 16, 13.
And then number 25, listen tothis one.
The Holy Spirit gives you skills.
I'm going to pull this one fromthe Old Testament.
The Lord said to Moses see, Ihave called by name Bezalel, the

(22:45):
son of Uri, son of Hur, of thetribe of Judah, and I have
filled him with the Spirit ofGod, with ability and
intelligence, with knowledge andall craftsmanship to devise
artistic designs, to work ingold, silver and blondes and
cutting stones for setting, carving, wood work.
In every craft.

(23:07):
It's the Spirit of God whogives you skills ability,
intelligence, knowledge,craftsmanship, artistry.
Look to the Spirit as you studyin your major college students,
and not just skills for work.
The Holy Spirit gives you giftsthe church for the building up

(23:30):
of the bride of Christ, everysingle follower of Jesus in this
room.
You have spiritual, supernatural gifts in you for
the building up of the peoplearound you in the church.
1 Corinthians, 12 through 14.
Number 27, the Holy Spiritproduces fruit in you.
This was the song I sang withmy youngest kids who were here
in family worship last night.
Holy Spirit gives you love.
This was the song I sang withmy youngest kids who were here
in family worship last night.

(23:51):
Holy Spirit gives you love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness,gentleness and self-control.
Like that's the fruit of theSpirit just flowing from you,
which leads to number 28.
The Holy Spirit causes streamsof living water to flow from you
.
That's the picture Jesus saysin John 7, 37 to 39, in the Holy

(24:12):
Spirit, you have streams ofliving water just flowing from
your life.
What a picture.
Every one of us interact witheach other.
Just see each other this wayStreams of living water flowing
from you.
All right, we've passed thehalfway point.
It only gets better.
We haven't even talked abouthow.

(24:32):
Number 29, the Holy Spiritreveals the Word of God.
So, so many places we could goin the Bible here.
2 Peter 1 says this book wasrecorded by writers who were
carried along by the Holy Spirit.
Oh, that's the language and itmakes total sense.

(24:52):
This book is supernatural.
Sixty-six books written by morethan 40 authors in three
languages over the course of1,500 years, all telling one
consistent story, and no passagein the entire book contradicts
the singular focus on the gospelof Jesus Christ Not one.

(25:13):
How's that possible?
If you asked 40 people you knowto write a book that told one
overarching story about who Godis, who we are, how this world
was made, what's wrong with thisworld, how this world can be
made right, there is no chancethose 40 people would agree.
Those are people all living inthe same time period, likely
speaking the same language.
We're talking about a widevariety of authors from a wide

(25:36):
variety of professions over thecourse of centuries, speaking
different languages, not even tomention over 300 specific
prophecies that were fulfilledin detail in the life, death and
resurrection of Jesus.
Mathematicians say theprobability of one man
fulfilling 10 of thoseprophecies is about 1 in 100
billion.
Jesus fulfilled all 300 of them.
How is that possible?

(25:57):
Here's how it has one author.
The Holy Spirit of God hasrevealed this world.
There is nothing like this bookanywhere in the world.
In fact, this whole world isone day going to fade away.
This word will remain.
The Holy Spirit reveals theword of God and the Holy Spirit

(26:20):
reveals the will of God.
So just one of many examples inScripture Luke 2, 22 to 25,
there was a man in Jerusalemwhose name was Simeon.
This man was righteous anddevout, waiting for the
consolation of Israel, and theHoly Spirit was upon him and had
been revealed to him by theHoly Spirit.
He would not see death beforehe had seen the Lord's Christ.

(26:42):
So he came in the Spirit intothe temple and he saw Jesus,
just like the Holy Spirit hadtold him he would.
The Holy Spirit reveals thewill of God like this and I'll
be the first to admit there'smystery to this.
I could tell you so manystories.
I'll tell you one just realquick A close friend of mine who

(27:03):
has spent his life working inunreached places.
He was on a train in anunreached country in the middle
of nowhere, and he sensed theHoly Spirit saying to him get
off the train now.
The only problem was well, hehad two problems he had no idea
where he was and the train wasmoving, but as best as he could
tell, the Holy Spirit wasspeaking to him.
So he got up, got his stuff, hopped off the train.

(27:23):
He's now in the middle of afield, his stuff hopped off the
train.
He's now in the middle of afield, doesn't know where he is,
looks off in the distance andsees a light in front of what
looks like a small house in avillage.
So he starts walking toward it.
There's a guy sitting outsidethe front of his house.
Come to find out, this guy wasa pastor praying for help and my

(27:47):
friend ended up starting apastor training center with that
brother in that village.
Now I'm not advocating for yougoing hopping off trains all
over the world, but I am sayingGod's Spirit still directs God's
people according to God's will.
And I would say my friend wouldsay now what's most important
is not like subjectivepromptings, like that we may

(28:10):
think the Spirit may be saying, but objective obedience to what
we know the Spirit is saying, which is why number 31 is the
Holy Spirit enables you to obeythe Word of God.
What you know beyond the shadowof a doubt is the will of God
in His Word.
This is the continuation ofEzekiel 36, 27 from earlier.
I will put my Spirit within youand I'll cause you to walk in
my statutes and be careful toobey my rules.

(28:33):
You have power from the HolySpirit of God in you to obey all
the rules of God to you.
There is not one command inscripture that Jesus gives to
you that you cannot obey by thepower of the Holy Spirit inside
of you.
Some of you are struggling withsin, with temptation.
Look to the Holy Spirit.

(28:54):
He will cause you to walk inHis statutes and be careful to
obey His rules.
And the big picture of Romans 8,14 is it's the Holy Spirit who
leads you in every facet of yourlife.
Or to use language from Paul inActs, chapter 20, verse 22,.
The Holy Spirit compels you togo even to hard, difficult,

(29:15):
dangerous places, which isexactly what God, by His Spirit
in Paul, was leading him to doin Acts, chapter 20.
How does he do this?
The Holy Spirit transforms yourthoughts and your desires.
Romans, chapter 8, verse 5.
He doesn't just giveinstructions.
He transforms us from theinside out to enable us to walk

(29:36):
in His will.
The Holy Spirit does that.
Number 35, the Holy Spirit tellsyou what to do or not do.
Acts 16,.
Paul starts to go one way.
The Spirit stops him, starts togo another way.
The Spirit stops him again.
Then he goes.
The Spirit ends up leading himin a totally different direction
.
Don't you want to live likethat, just led by the Spirit of

(30:02):
God, him directing your everystep, your every word?
And for number 36, the HolySpirit gives you supernatural
might and power to do what he'stelling you to do or to not do
it.
Zechariah, God, says to hispeople through the prophet you
cannot do what I'm calling youto do by your might or your
power, but you can do it by myspirit, which is the thrust of

(30:25):
the promise that Jesus thengives to his disciples right
before he ascends to heaven, inActs, chapter 1, verse 8.
So what does the Holy Spiritgive us supernatural might and
power to do?
The Holy Spirit empowers you tolead people near and far from
you to eternal life.
So we're going to camp out onthis one for a minute.

(30:46):
If you want to look at Acts, chapter 1, verse 8, you can.
But many of you familiar withthis verse in your Bible, but I
don't think we realize what itwould have been like to hear
these words from Jesus when helooked at them after rising from
the dead.
He says you will receive powerwhen the Holy Spirit has come
upon you and you will be mywitnesses in Jerusalem and all

(31:09):
Judea and Samaria and to the endof the earth.
So just imagine that scene Jesusgathered with his disciples on
the mountain outside Jerusalem.
They're still overwhelmed thatJesus has died and then come
back to life.
They're pretty excited.
The gang is back together, they're rolling again and Jesus
says all right, guys, here's theplan.
We're going to start back inJerusalem.

(31:31):
Now think about that.
What just happened in Jerusalem?
They just killed Jesus there.
Like, if you're a follower ofJesus, the last place you want
to go back to is Jerusalem.
Right now they hate you there.
So Jesus says that's where we'regoing to start, where they hate
you.
And then you're not going tostop there.
Then you're going to go toJudea and Samaria.

(31:54):
And as soon as we hear that, wegot to put ourselves in the
shoes of these Jewish disciplesbecause Jewish people hated the
Samaritans.
So Jesus just said here's theplan, guys, you're going to
start where they hate you, andthen you're going to go where
you hate them.
And then that's not all.
After that, you're going to goto places in the world you don't

(32:15):
even know exist at the ends ofthe earth, places you don't even
know how to get to.
And then watch this verse 9,when he had said these things,
as they were looking on, he waslifted up and a cloud took him
out of their sight.
Jesus said we're going to startwhere they hate you.
You're going to go where youhate them.

(32:36):
Then you're going to go toplaces you don't even know exist
.
And they're looking at him andthen, all of a sudden, he takes

(32:59):
a flight into heaven and they'relooking up.
Totally dumbfounded.
You say how do you know?
Well, look at the verse here, verse 10,.
While they were gazing intoheaven as they went, then watch
this these two men show up.
Behold, two men stood by themin white robes.
Imagine that Again.
Put yourself in thesedisciples' shoes.
You're dumbfounded, lookinginto the sky, because Jesus just
levitated into a cloud.
And then, all of a sudden, youlook beside you and two dudes in

(33:22):
white robes have suddenlyappeared out of nowhere.
What do you do then?
Who are you?
How did you get here?
Uh, what just happened?
I'll tell you what justhappened.
Jesus just gave this plan to hisdisciples, took a flight up to
the right hand of the father, sat down, got comfortable,
looked down, saw a bunch ofdisciples looking up into the

(33:43):
clouds and said to two angels godown there and tell them to do
what I told them to do.
You say you're making that up.
No, I'm not.
Look at verse 11.
They said this men of Galileesaid why do you stand looking
into heaven?
What kind of question is that?
Well, there's a guy who justlevitated up there and a cloud

(34:05):
took him.
So I'm just kind of curious tosee who, where he went, if he's
coming back and, by the way, whoare you and how did you get
here?
And the guy says oh, listen tothis, he's coming back.
This Jesus, who's taken up fromyou into heaven, will come in
the same way as you saw him gointo heaven.
So what do they do?
They go and do what Jesus toldthem to do.

(34:28):
They go to Jerusalem.
They do not start whiteboardinga plan.
They don't start strategizing.
They don't get a big conferencetogether with a bunch of
preaching.
They just pray.
They just seek the face of Godand wait for power from the Holy
Spirit, like he promised he'dgive, which leads to then,
chapter 2.
And again, I'm guessing many ofyou have read this before, but

(34:49):
even if you have just picture itlike it's the first time you've
ever read it On the day ofPentecost arrived, they're all
together in one place andsuddenly there came from heaven
a sound like a mighty rushingwind.
It filled the entire housewhere they were sitting.
So it's not an actual rushingwind like blowing through their
hair, but it's the sound of arushing wind.

(35:10):
Can we just like, maybesimulate that?
All right, on the count ofthree, we're going to do sound
of a mighty rushing wind.
All right, one, two, three,Maybe, I don't know, but
actually that was kind of like,I think, a mighty rushing wind.

(35:34):
I think it would be like whatis going on here, not like, ah,
I think this was like crazypanic.
What is going on?
A sound like a hurricane in theroom.
And then, check this out, divided tongues, as of fire
appeared to them and rested oneach one of them.

(35:55):
What, like?
What is a fire tongue?
What does that even look like?
Like resting on each one.
Turn to the person next to youand just picture a fire tongue
on them.
Do you see it?
What do you do?
Like fire tongues.

(36:23):
And then they were all filledwith the Holy Spirit.
There he is, he's on them, andthey began to speak in other
tongues.
This is languages, as theSpirit, the Holy Spirit gave
them the ability to utterdifferent languages.
How amazing would that be.
Like what language would youchoose?

(36:44):
Somebody said Wakandan,wakandan.
I don't think so.
Yeah, anyway, just think allthe different languages.
Just imagine in this room ifthat happened.
Like Bahasa Indonesia, justpeople spouting out Swahili over
here.
Korean, just languages.

(37:05):
I think about the thousands andthousands of languages in the
world.
Just imagine them all beingspoken by people who didn't know
them one second before and nowknow them and you're declaring
in these languages the mightywonders of God.
Now you look at this scene andthis is where I just want you to
let it soak in.
Do you realize that the sameHoly Spirit who did that in Acts

(37:28):
, chapter 2 is the same HolySpirit who's living inside of
you right now?
The same Holy Spirit, that sameHoly Spirit is in this room
right now.
He's here.
He's here in our midst.
This is amazing.
I don't think we realize it.

(37:51):
I think most of us came in heretonight like maybe even if you
came in with like a sense ofexpectation, it wasn't like we
have the Holy Spirit in us, wehave the Holy Spirit in our
midst.
This is gonna be breathtaking.
We're meeting with the HolySpirit.

(38:12):
He's living inside of me.
Like this changes everything and, specifically here, gives you
power to lead people near youand far from you to eternal life
.
Like you have power to speakthis word, this truth, the

(38:33):
gospel of jesus christ and theholy spirit will take your words
and use them to bring people, friends of yours, family members
of yours from death to life.
The holy spirit has given youthat power.
Oh, number 38, the holy spiritshows you god's power and the
proclamation of His Word.

(38:53):
That's what 1 Corinthians,chapter 2, is all about.
And even more specifically, theHoly Spirit fills you with
power in particular moments toproclaim God's Word.
I listed two scriptures there.
Eight times Luke uses thephrase filled with the Holy
Spirit and Luke acts.
It's two volume work.
And all eight times there's aspecific relationship between

(39:14):
someone being filled with theHoly Spirit and the Word of God
being proclaimed.
This is staggering.
When you speak God's Word toothers, there's a filling of the
Holy Spirit that accompaniesthat proclamation.
And Jesus promised the HolySpirit gives you words to say
and the power to say them.
Jesus says it won't be youspeaking, it'll be the Holy
Spirit speaking through you.
So don't stay silent.

(39:35):
Spirit-filled Christians, youhave power to proclaim the
greatest news in all the world,to lead people to life all over
the world forever.
My mom was with my family onChristmas this year, one night
in family worship, she wassharing with me and our kids
about how she didn't grow up inchurch until one day a middle
school girl named Monica invitedmy aunt, my mom's sister and my

(39:59):
mom to go to church and Monicashared the gospel with them and
they ended up coming to Jesus.
And I just sat there in awe asI looked around my living room
at my kids, as we're praying andwe're singing together.
I just realized this ishappening because a middle
school girl named Monica sharedthe gospel and the power of the
Holy Spirit with my mom one day.
Do not underestimate for asecond the power of your words,

(40:22):
with the Holy Spirit inside ofyou, to affect generations and
nations, peoples, through theHoly Spirit in you.
All right.
10 more.
We're going to fly through them.
41,.
The Holy Spirit helps us makedecisions together Acts 15, 28,.
As brothers and sisters inChrist.
The Holy Spirit gives us accessto the Father together
Ephesians 2, 17 through 22,.

(40:43):
The Holy Spirit gives us unityin the body of Christ together
Ephesians 4, and I actuallyshould say 3 through 6.
Sorry about that.
There we go.
I love the instant fellowship Iexperience whenever I meet
another brother or sister inChrist here at this conference,
anywhere in the world, and wemay be different in so many ways
.
We have the same spirit in usthough, and it transforms the

(41:04):
way we relate to each other.
So, brothers and sisters, donot ever give up on working to
maintain the unity of the Spiritand the bond of peace with each
other.
We have supernatural power toexperience otherworldly unity.
So, spirit of God, help us asyour church to be one as the
Father, the Son and the HolySpirit.

(41:25):
You are one.
It's John 17.
Then Ephesians, chapter 5,verse 18 to 21.
The Holy Spirit directs ourworship.
Do not get drunk with wine, that's debauchery but be filled
with the Holy Spirit and listento the fruit of that, addressing
one another in psalms, hymns, spiritual songs, singing, making
melody to the Lord with yourheart.
You see how we're commanded tobe filled with the Spirit as we

(41:48):
sing and make melody togetherLike don't be mechanical in your
worship, be spiritual in yourworship.
John 4,.
Worship in spirit and in truth.
Do not sing songs to Godmindlessly or monotonously.
You think about our bodiesbeing temples of the Holy Spirit

(42:10):
, god's presence and spirit inus as we're worshiping.
Like what did people dothroughout the Old Testament
when they came into God'spresence?
Look at Solomon when hededicated the temple in 2
Chronicles 7.
As soon as he finished hisprayer, fire came down from
heaven, consumed the burntofferings and the sacrifices.
The glory of the Lord filledthe temple.
The priest couldn't enter thehouse of the Lord because the

(42:31):
glory of the Lord filled theLord's house.
When all the people of Israelsaw the fire come down, the
glory of the Lord on the temple, they bowed down with their
faces to the ground on thepavement and they worshiped and
gave thanks to the Lord, sayinghe's good, for his steadfast
love endures forever.
That's what you do when you'rein the temple.
How much more when you are thetemple.

(42:57):
Ezra, chapter 10,.
Ezra prayed, made confession, weeping and casting himself down
before the house of God, thetemple.
A very great assembly of men, women and children gathered to
him out of Israel, for thepeople wept bitterly.
Isaiah, when he beheld theholiness of God in Isaiah,
chapter 6, was on his face.
I'm just wondering if we havethe Holy Spirit of God inside of
us, like personally in ourbodies, temples of the Holy

(43:18):
Spirit, and corporately in thegathered church, which is what 1
Corinthians 3 talks about, where the temple is the church,
holy Spirit among us.

(43:39):
Then why is this posture sorare?
In our worship, we have theHoly Spirit of God in us.
Be filled with the Holy Spiritin ways that lead you to awe
before the Holy God.
The Holy Spirit directs ourworship and then, as we're

(44:06):
gathered for worship, the HolySpirit speaks as we worship,
fast and pray.
It's Acts 13, 2.
As they were worshiping theLord, fasting, the Holy Spirit
spoke, set apart Barnabas andSaul for the work to which I've
called them.
We are not just going throughmotions in worship.
We're not playing a game, evenin this room tonight.

(44:28):
Tomorrow, we're not attending aconference.
When we go to a Sunday service,we're meeting with God to
listen to God speak by His HolySpirit.
I was thinking last night aboutrecent times I've had in prayer
and worship, like Acts 13, withothers, when people who've not
even known me or anything aboutme have spoken words from God to

(44:51):
me and over me that wereclearly from him.
Of course, in alignment withscripture, this is a
supernatural thing we're doingwhen we gather together for the
worship of God.
Don't be casual with worship ofGod.
Don't be casual with gatheringsin prayer.
I can share so many stories inour church family of gathering
for hours at a time, sometimesall night.

(45:13):
In our church family the HolySpirit moves, works in ways,
unique ways.
After two, three, four, six, eight hours together in prayer,
and then here in Acts 13, theHoly Spirit sets us apart for
mission to the nations Afterfasting and praying.
They laid their hands on themand sent them off.
They were sent out by the HolySpirit.
What God did in this worshipgathering would literally turn

(45:36):
the world upside down.
And, if I could be so bold,it's what we're asking God to do
in these worship gatheringsduring this week, that God would
speak and God would lead andconstrain some of you to go to
your church and say the HolySpirit, I believe, may be
leading me to go to peoplewho've never heard the gospel,
and such a way that years andyears to come, people who've

(45:59):
never heard the gospel will hearit because of what the Holy
Spirit did in this room.
And in all of this, the lastfour, the Holy Spirit assures
you that you are in Christ.
John writes.
This is how we know that we'rein Jesus by the Spirit that he
gives us.
We have assurance of salvationby the Holy Spirit.

(46:19):
Number 48, the Holy Spiritguarantees you eternity with
Christ Ephesians 1, 13,.
And him you also.
When you heard the word oftruth, the gospel of your
salvation, believed in him.
You were sealed with thepromised Holy Spirit, who is the
guarantee of our inheritanceuntil we acquire possession of
it to the praise of his glory.
You are sealed by the HolySpirit, who is a guarantee.

(46:43):
You have an inheritance waitingfor you that you're going to
acquire one day, and the HolySpirit is the guarantee that one
day it's going to be yours.
And in similar language, number49, the Holy Spirit anticipates
your future resurrection.
With Christ, we have the firstfruits of the Spirit as we groan

(47:04):
inwardly and wait eagerly forour adoption as sons, the
redemption of our bodies.
These bodies in this fallenworld will one day be redeemed.
I have two people I'm very closeto who have terminal diseases
right now and maybe in theirlast days leukemia, tumors,
cancers, hospital, hospice, which may cause some people to

(47:30):
wonder where's the power of Godin that.
I'll tell you the answer tothat question.
Both of these men have the HolySpirit of God dwelling inside
of them and, as I've spent timewith them in recent days, I've
seen two men who are not afraidof death, two men who have
supernatural peace and joy andcomfort and hope and love being
poured into their hearts.
Because they know their spiritis sealed, because they know

(47:55):
what I want, I pray you willknow deep in your heart.
You will hold on to, no matterwhat happens to you in this
world, the number 50, the HolySpirit, will one day welcome you
to a feast forever with God.
This is how the Bible ends, last chapter, revelation 22,.
The Spirit and the bride saycome.

(48:16):
Let the one who hears say come.
Let the one who is thirsty come, let the one who desires take
the water of life without price.
The Holy Spirit who lives inyou is going to welcome you one
day, along with men and womenfrom every nation, tribe, people
and language, to a place wherethere will be no more hospitals

(48:38):
and no more hospice and no moretumors and no more cancer, no
more sickness, no more suffering, no more disorders, no more
disease, no more death.
There will just be life fulland free forever.
