Neuroloog Sandra van der Salm van UMC Utrecht wil ontrafelen wat stroboscopische licht precies met het brein doet. Want één op de twintig mensen krijgt ooit in zijn leven een epileptische aanval en mag daarna - uit voorzorg voor een mogelijke tweede - vaak niet meer naar de club.
Maar dat wringt: de meeste mensen krijgen namelijk nooit een tweede aanval. Sandra en haar collega's willen die kans op herhaling beter kunnen inschatten. Daarom bouwden ze een pop-up disco op het Betweter Festival van de Universiteit Utrecht, waar ze voor het eerst meten hoe gezonde breinen reageren op lichtflitsen. Die nulmeting moet straks helpen bepalen wie écht risico loopt op een nieuwe aanval, en wie gewoon weer veilig kan dansen.
