Speaker 1 (00:00):
You with cape song This Africa Milani on early breakfast. Well,
history was made Edis Park in Johannesburg on Saturday afternoon
into early evening when, for the first time since nineteen
sixty three, the Wallabies managed to get the better of
the Springboks. The final score thirty eight twenty two. Jander
Gwennan joins me on the line now editor of Rugby

(00:21):
three sixty five. Not a score you would have predicted.
I imagine, Yan, if I had spoken to you on
Friday morning, good morning to.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
You, Good morning Africa, and apologies for Friday morning, thanks
for having me on the show. No, I did not
expect that. It was, indeed, in my view, on a show.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
Let's understand the horror, Yan, what went wrong?

Speaker 2 (00:42):
We it went too easy, too well in the first
twenty minutes and it looked like the team just switched
off the players, the key players for playmakers, we're not
in that game they were. I mean, we can there's
lots of individual moments that you can beck on, but

(01:03):
to put it in in a nutshell, the main players
were switched off. They were not executing their core functions properly.
We can talk about the intercept passners. We can talk
about the kicks or the miss tackles, there's just a
general in general, the entire team switch off. I think

(01:24):
they just became too comfortable, and whether we like it
or not, I think they became complacent after going up
twenty two or all.

Speaker 1 (01:32):
Rossie Rasmus was quite unanimous actually in the press conference
post the match, taking some of the blame as the
coach and the coaching team for obviously I don't know
the game plan paths is just not the right one,
whatever the case may be. Is that fair or did
the players need to take some responsibility for their own
action in the field as well on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
As you will not three these players under the bus,
and you've got to give them credit for that. But yeah,
I think it's the players. Rassi is not on Thatt field.
He's not the one throwing into sepasses. And Rassi is
not the one that is missing tackles. So I'll put
the blames crearly on the shoulders of the players. If
Russi must run on the field to make to clean

(02:17):
out at the breakdown, if Rasi, then you can blame Rassi.
H you blame the players. You're supposed to be the flanks,
the locks, the person who is supposed to throw in
the line out. That's what I'm saying. It's entirely entirely
the teams in the players faulty mus take the blame
and expect lots of changes. I mean, I see your
names his team tomorrow. Expect lots of changes because I

(02:39):
think as a collective and as individual the players were
not in that game, certainly not for the last hour.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
He did hint that internally they already had a clue
as to who would be taking to the field in
Cape Town this coming Saturday. They were going to have
a conversation obviously on Saturday night. What sort of change
is do you think he needs to make? If you
if you could be a whisperer into his yeah, what

(03:06):
changes would you think would be pertinent to turn our
fortunes around?

Speaker 2 (03:12):
I would start for starting start on the back line.
I think fly off is one we can't beat around
the bush. Money Levelock is brilliant in UREC and provincial level.
He has never dominated the Test match. When things go
wrong on the field, you need to change your action.
You can't keep doing the same things over and you

(03:34):
need somebody who's come and can take control when things
start to get pair of shape. So that's the one
definite change I would do. I think he would have had,
like you say, an idea of what changes would have
been made. I think there will be a few more.
I think there might be a new hookah on the
bench for starters. The props might change a bit. I

(03:54):
think we definitely a bit more depth or energy check pieces.
Then maybe the well the centers I think might change
as well. So they expect plenty of change, but certainly
the key positions I think flowers and once come off.
There might be another change maybe fullback. Maybe we need

(04:16):
a bit more calmness at fullback, a bit more control
experiences fullback. And also remember we're not going to play
a running game as we did and Ellis Park because
it's not going to be as dry and nice. Cape
Town is going to be a bit more cold and wet.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
He did pay tribute to judgment to the coach of
Australia fairly so right because he is doing something right there.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
He's getting that team, there's a very young Wallaby team,
is getting them to play with energy and that's what
you do. You keep the team calm and you make
sure they keep doing what they do well. And Josephi
has always been even when he was with Ireland, he
was that top of coach. He never panics. So one
hundred percent Joe Smith is lifting up Australia. And when

(05:07):
he leaves, who knows, well, let's play the same. We
won't know until it happens, but at the end of
the year Joe Smith will will live and in Australia,
Belaef the new coach.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
All right, well it's a Monday. They playing again on Saturday.
It will be at Cape Town Stadium. It will be
some rein expected. I think on Thursday we might see
the tail end of that into Friday, possibly even early
hours of Saturday morning. Will have a better idea as
we get closer to the weekend. I mean, it's too

(05:40):
early to predict. I suppose what's going to happen, because
we don't even know the team that is going to
be drafting. Are you confident that we can turn our
fortunes around.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
We will turn it round. You'll see a different performance
and as you will get into the team, as a
coach does, and he will give him some interest in
words you already use some interesting languages past weekend, so
I think much of that language will. As we've seen
in Chasing the Sun, he's not scared to use some
colorful language, and I think there will be a lot

(06:11):
of that in the team change or team talks. This week.

Speaker 1 (06:14):
A friend of mine who absolutely adores rugby and analyzes
it with me as if I know anything what I'm
talking about, was saying that perhaps, just perhaps we were
too arrogant going into this match.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Absolutely, Yeah, complacency Ericance is probably a better word than complacency.
Complacens is a nice word, but erican. Yeah, we were
definitely we're arrogant.

Speaker 1 (06:34):
When are we going to have the rather uncomfortable conversation
Yan of when to retire Cia Colisi?

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Yeah, it's very conversation that's ongoing internally. As a leader
can continue. It's a bit like brain for Milan, having
brained for Milan around, still his wisdom is still important
on the players as as coach. We see our player coach,
that's evolution, the loose trio. That's that's an evolution that

(07:07):
we struggling with because we'll see our bitter stiff's also,
But you know, a bitter stiff even if he wasn't
his usual self at the weekend. So those are conversations
that we should start having now. And what role will
see a play going forward? Is it just going to
be a player represented is going to be a top
of catchup much like valid who gets an occasional game,

(07:30):
but involved in the team structure. So yes, that conversation
needs to start now.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
Yeah, thank you very much. Indeed, Jan Dequinning, editor of
Rugby three sixty five. The second match between the Wannabees
and spring Books will be played in Cape Town this weekend,
and as we edged closer to the week we can
rather we will obviously preview that match when we have
a better sense of what team Rassi Rasmus has decided
to field and how the Australian coach has responded
