know, man, I've enjoyed workingwith John in our Hendersonville
office over the last month or soyes, that's right, and meeting
with clients, mutually givingthem a two for one right where

But, john, tell us a little bitabout yourself.
What's your history?

Well, thank

I'm happy to be here.
I think Hendersonville is agreat area.
I'm excited to be part of thisoffice.
Greg McIntyre (01:35):
You're originally
from this area, not
Hendersonville, but Asheville.
John Miller, III (01:41):
That's true.
I grew up in Asheville, I wentto Reynolds High School, sure,
and then kind of migrated eastand went to college.
What's the AC's thing for.
The AC is and AC Reynolds HighSchool it's.
You know, it's the two initialsof Sure somebody's name Mr

Okay, ac, yes, ac, ac of ACReynolds.
It's funny because I went tocollege in Winston-Salem and
there was a high school there,rj Reynolds.

tobacco, a little more tobaccoyeah, I wonder if AC was like

Grew up in
Asheville, migrated east.
I spent a long time in theTriangle practicing in mainly
the real estate area, but I'mexcited for this really new
chapter.

So you're a Wake
Forest grad undergrad, right.
You're a demon deacon, that'sright.
What are the demon deacons?
Does that mean they're?
I don't know?
That's kind of an oxymoron tome or like a controversial term.

That was used
during a radio broadcast, I
think years ago.

Yeah, and it
stuck.

They stuck
because the demon deacons were
playing so hard that one of theradio announcers made a comment
about them.
And yeah, you know I love beinga Deac.
It's a bittersweet thing beinga fan.

You guys have had

this year in basketball.

Really, he was at Wake Forestat the same time, he seemed like

and then Campbell.
You were at Campbell, like me.
I was in the hottest place inthe universe Campbell University

In Buies Creek

In Buies Creek, right right, itwas before the law school was
moved to Raleigh.
Me too, nothing to do there butstudy.
Greg McIntyre (04:06):
I called it boot
camp for law school.
It was like law school bootcamp because it was so tough.
I mean, they put you throughyour paces there at Campbell.
They were serious.
John Miller, III (04:18):
It was no joke
.
They even had the pre-basedadmission program at that point
where the PBAP, where the peoplewere there during the summer
just to try to get in.
Greg McIntyre (04:31):
To jockey for a
spot to get in.
John Miller, III (04:33):
Exactly.
Greg McIntyre (04:34):
And then they'd
weed out folks during their
tenure, you know, during theyears.
So your graduating class was,like you know, smaller than
significantly smaller than whatwe started.
Mine was yeah, mine too yeah,but the point was I think they
were trying to produce attorneysthat were good North Carolina

attorneys.
I think they have a good focusthere to try to do that.
John Miller, III (04:58):
I think so.
I mean, I think the idea wasfor the school to develop
attorneys that could immediatelystart their own practice and
that could serve some of therural areas in North Carolina
and we certainly have that inthe western part of the state,
but the eastern part of thestate as well where in those

smaller towns attorneys can goin there and provide good legal
services.
Greg McIntyre (05:26):
Right, yeah, and
I think they've done a good job
of it.
I agree, yeah, I agree, and soyou practice some different
areas in your career.
I know you have a really deeproot, or deeply rooted, in
property law, which I think isan amazing foundation for estate

planning and elder law.
We deal with so much realestate and a lot of times that's
people's most valuable assetthat they have is their home
right, so you have a lot ofknowledge in that area.
John Miller, III (06:07):
That is true.
I've done, completed, numerous,numerous real estate
transactions over a long, longperiod in the practice of law.
Greg McIntyre (06:19):
How many closings
real estate transactions have
you presided over?
John Miller, III (06:25):
You know, I've
never counted.
I would say it's probably.
Well, it's certainly in thethousands.
I don't know if it would be3,000, I don't know 4,000.
I'm not sure.

Yes, and you did probably titlesearches in all those too,
right?
John Miller, III (06:45):
A lot of those

A good many of them, yeah,because if you have an
institutional loan, if you havea bank lender, you're typically
going to get title insurance,which is going to require a
title search to do that?
Greg McIntyre (07:03):
require a title
search to do that.
So that gives you.
You just become intimatelyfamiliar with how people own
property, the title records, theregister of deeds, how all that
works.
Claims on property, thosethings right.
John Miller, III (07:13):
Absolutely,
Absolutely.
The thing about being a realestate attorney is that your
knowledge really bounces offsome of the other areas of the
law, such as litigation orestate planning If there's an
estate involved in selling theproperty.
You have to familiarizeyourself with so many different
(07:36):
areas of the law with so manydifferent areas of the law.
Greg McIntyre (07:41):
That's why I
think it's a great foundation.
From personally having done aton of real estate closings
almost in another life, it feelslike Right.
It's just.
I couldn't imagine coming infresh, dealing with so much
property and estate planning andnot having that underpinning my

knowledge of what ownership isof real property and how it
changes hands and how it'shandled so well.
I'm very glad.
What is your vision for ourHendersonville office and our
clients here and our team?
John Miller, III (08:19):
Well, I
definitely want to assist in the
growth of this office.
I think the Hendersonville areais such a great area for estate
planning estate planning and wehave so many retirees moving
(08:42):
here a good base and foundationof people that have lived here a
long time.
So I'm excited to be part ofthis area and I'm looking for
growth.
I think we want to expand thisoffice, expand the reach, not
just in Henderson County butTransylvania County and others.

I think Brevard is another areathat is really ripe for good
estate planning advice.
Greg McIntyre (09:14):
Agreed, agreed
and underserved.
John Miller, III (09:16):
Definitely.
Greg McIntyre (09:17):
Definitely.
So.
What is your favorite thingabout dealing with clients?
How about that?
John Miller, III (09:28):
You know
that's changed over the years.
I used to be much moreleft-brained and task-oriented
when dealing with clients.
You know we just need to getthis done, and I think that
comes from doing a lot of realestate.
We just got to get thistransaction done and move along.
(09:48):
Now what I find is I enjoyfinding out more about the
person.
I enjoy finding out that, hey,maybe I have a connection with
them or maybe we went to thesame high school or even enjoy
the same restaurant.
So I find that getting to knowthe people has become more

important to me over the yearsthan just finishing off the
transaction.
Greg McIntyre (10:18):
Sure, the
relationships over time Exactly
Matter it does.
And knowing somebody and I'llsay this all the time I mean
people will tell you what theywant.
People will lay out what theirestate plan should be.
They'll reveal their goals,right with what they value
whether it's their home or, youknow, it's their grandchildren
(10:39):
or their children right, andtrying to come up with the
proper estate plan for somebody.
That's super important, right,it's trying to reveal what those
goals are and accomplish thoseso well.
I'm extremely glad that you'rewith our firm and I look forward
