Under det tidiga 1900-talet slog Evert Taube igenom med sina sjömansvisor då den gryende moderna musikindustrin kom till Sverige. Resultatet blev en enorm succé och svenskarna dränktes fram till 1960-talet i maritim populärmusik via artister som Lasse Dahlqvist, Harry Brandelius, Jussi Björling, Karin Juel, Alice Babs, Monica Zetterlund och många fler. Överallt framfördes musik om sjömän, hav, fartyg, skärgårdar, segling och fritidsbåtar. Den svenska nationalismen förändrades när inlandets Dalarna fick ge vika för skärgårdsön som geografisk symbol för svenskhet. Henrik Arnstad har forskat om fenomenet och publicerat studien ”Swedish sailor songs, popular culture and maritime national identities, 1918–1960” i världens ledande maritimhistoiska tidskrift, International Journal of Maritime History (läs den här).
