They use phrases like, “I noticed that you are doing …..” and “In my own experience, I have found that I can fix that problem by…”. -Act as your teammate to get you better. You are PAYING them to get you better and therefore, it is their job to get you to improve. You don’t owe them a superiority complex and you should not tolerate such. -Balance Negative Criticism with Positive Criticism. The human mind is inherently geared towards negativity. Some say it should be 1:3 ratio of negative:positive comments, but the bottom line is understanding that the brain is hypersensitive to negative comments. If your teacher is only telling you everything you are doing wrong, and not praising your accomplishments in performance, or picking something up quickly, you will soon establish a negative bias and low self-confidence in your ability to make music. -Leave you inspired and motivated to improve your musical skills on a regular basis. To me this aspect of a teacher has become more important as I have gone further in my piano career. A lot of times, I do know the corrections to make, but my main problem seems to be being able to maintain a sustained level of motivation and perspective of why I continue growing as a musician. Kyle Landry is one of my teachers who hands down makes me feel like a million bucks as I come out of my lesson. -Are an actively performing regularly. This may not be important to you if you don’t care to share your music but for me, this is a crucial non-negotiable in finding a piano instructor because there are struggles in performance that are not present inside the practice room.
