Um auf ihrer korrekten Flugbahn zum weit entfernten Ziel zu bleiben, muss die Sonde eine Serie kritischer Swingby-Manöver an Erde und Mars unternehmen. Sie hat bereits im November 2005 an der Erde Schwung geholt und in wenigen Tagen, am 25. Februar, folgt der Mars. Zwei weitere Swingbys sind im November 2007 und November 2009 geplant.
