Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sometimes you don't got to say a word, and God
is gonna fight your battles for you.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Just sit there, be quiet.
Speaker 3 (00:05):
Don't curse those who curse you, but like bless those
who curse you.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
He spoke a word over my life, and I just
remembered it from that day. I can still hear the
echoes of his voice in my life.
Speaker 4 (00:18):
I remember him saying this, Hey, guys, welcome back to
faith and familiar.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
That's super excited for time with you all today. Today
we'll be covering James three. Have you ever said something
that you thought or you wish you could take back?
Speaker 2 (00:39):
I know, for me, for my wife, we.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
Understand the power of our words and how they can
shape or take somebody's life.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
That's right, Yeah, especially even when we have children. I
know for many parents it may be a struggle taming
the tongue for various reasons. But here in this child
after we're gonna be talking about taming the tongue and
how important it is that we watch what we say
and watch what comes out of our mouth. And like
(01:08):
we've covered before in chapter one, to be slow to
speak and quick to listen.
Speaker 5 (01:14):
And become angry man.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
And here's one thing that I know an uplifting word
can shift the trajectory of your life.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
For me, there was a guy.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
I remember one single moment he spoke a word over
my life and I just remembered it from that day.
I can still hear the echoes of his voice in
my life. I remember him saying this. He said, Rashaan,
irrespective of what you can do or bring, your love
for who you are. And I remember hearing that and
(01:46):
just being like, wow, dude, I really needed that. That
almost brought this grown land of tears. And I just
want to encourage someone out there to day. You are
not what you have in your bank account, what kind
of car you drive, what type of shoes you wear.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
You are who God said as you are.
Speaker 5 (02:00):
That's right, that's right. Amen.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
So we are in James chapter three and beginning at
verse one. Not many of you should become teachers, my
fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will
be judged more strictly. We all stumble in many ways.
Anyone who is never fought and what they say is
perfect able to keep their whole body in check. When
we put bits into the mouths of horses to make
(02:25):
them obey, us. We can turn the whole animal, or
take shift as an example. Although they are so large
and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by
a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.
Speaker 5 (02:38):
Likewise, the tongue is a small.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider
what a great force is set on fire by small spark.
The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil
among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body,
sets the whole course of one's life on fire, and
is itself set on fire by hellow All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles,
(03:01):
and sea creatures are being tamed, and have been tamed
by mankind. But no human being contain the tongue.
Speaker 5 (03:08):
It is a.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
Restless evil, full of deadly poison. With the tongue we
praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse
human beings who have been made in God's likeness. Out
of the same mouthcome praise and cursing my brothers and sisters.
This should not be. Can both fresh water and salt
water flow from the same spring. My brothers and sisters,
(03:29):
can a fig tree their olives with grape.
Speaker 5 (03:31):
Buying their figs.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
Speaker 5 (03:36):
Ooh, this is very convicting.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
Very conting. It's powerful. We all stumble in many ways.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
The scripture just said, and it also says anyone who
is never at fall in what they say is perfect.
And it also says it's able to keep the whole
body in check. Let me pull this question to you.
If it is so important to keep our and check,
why is it so hard to do? Why is it
(04:03):
so difficult to do? That's the question today.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
We four. I don't know.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
It can be because we have so many any opinions,
or or you know what it could be too. It
could be pride, it could be the lack of self control,
it could be start.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
If we look at Romans belief.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
And it's hard, but being not conformed to the ways
of the world, but transformed by the renewing of our mind.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
If we're not in the word the we're feeled by
the world. We're gonna do what the world says.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
Set of what the word tells us and what it
does for us, which is is it divise us? You know,
it's soul a mirror and it feels us. It feels
us as well.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
What we need to speak that which will give white
to others instead.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
Of bring a following our own heart, right like some
people say, I follow your own heart. But we need
to be following the Holy Spirit, the guidance of the
Holy Spirit, not what we feel, because feelings change.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
Yeah, in this passage.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
In this passage, James in the context of this is
writing to disperse a church that's struggling with conflicts with
this very thing. And there's the vision in the church
in the body, but there's also words causing major issues
in the body of Christs amongst different believers. In the
power of the tongue, and let's talk about this, it
(05:35):
says in James Chapter three, verses three through six, we
can read this and discuss this.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
But a bit in a horse's mouth, what is this
talking about? Blue Like a.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Small bit can control the whole horse, which is powerful.
And it also talks about the rudder of a ship,
and the small rudder is small, but it can move
a massive ship different directions to and fro through a
powerful storm wherever this little thing. And then it also
says a spark of fire, tiny spark can set a
whole force of blades that is insane. These metaphors illustrate
(06:08):
how something that is small, like the song, there is
a fire that's enormous. They can actually destroy everything. That's
half crazy. And what I think is cool about this.
Let's share a story about when we when we in marriage,
(06:30):
weren't very honoring with our tongues. Right, There's been times
where I am my immaturity to my wife.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
There's moments where reflect you know.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
They reflect who I used to be, and I would
lash out at you, a lash out at the kids.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
I'm just angry because I'm frustrated. It's my flesh.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
Yeah, and.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Yeah, it's just tough. And here goes our young boy
in here. They about to come in. They just bust
out the door.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
But but yeah, like I says here, like the tongue
is a small part of the body, but it's it's
a fire the tongue. The tongue also is a fire
world of evil among the parts of the body. Wow,
it corrupts the whole body. The tongue is a powerful
thing because you can even speak life or death.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
YEA imagine a word of encouragement.
Speaker 5 (07:24):
A long way.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
Yeah, I can say someone's life. Yes, it's good. Yeah,
just as the same as speaking death over somebody, it
can destroy their life and an incense.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
It wasn't so popular to speak death and life though.
That's what we're trying to get to the bottom une,
if you know, put in the commons. Now, why do
people use their tongue for evil and to hurt people
rather than to praise God into again?
Speaker 3 (07:50):
I think, I think honestly, we have to remember that,
you know, we have an enemy out there. We have
the we have Satan that once to destroy us, once
to destroy God's people. And and if saying can destroy
God's people, he's winning, right, Like what like there is
(08:15):
an enemy, a real, a real enemy out there that
wants to destroy God's people.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
Awome you don't want daddy, look look goodness, if you
have the Holy spirit, the Holy Spirit to report by
speaking of tame and our tongue, we actually have to
tame our son.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
He's in the back right now with his brother. We
have to lay it down.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
So I was talking about how like the enemy can
like when we speak negative things and discouraging things, like,
the enemy has a lot of influence over that, because
then I think, can't use somebody to be an instrument
for him. Like if somebody speaks death or speaks doubt,
they can instill fear or doubt insecurity, all of that
(09:12):
that can lead a person to think that their life
has no meaning or that they have no purpose in life.
Speaker 2 (09:17):
Yeah, that's so good.
Speaker 1 (09:20):
Life and death is in the power of the time,
and those who speak life will eat of its fruit.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
And I love this. Make a habit of encouraging people.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
Who is someone in your I sometimes go to my
whenever I even hear something encourage on Instagram or Facebook
or YouTube. They have that share option and I share
the video to a friend. I just shared a video
to a friend back in Oklahoma that was on there
this morning, just to shoot him a word of encouragement.
And that's why I like these features right now on YouTube.
(09:51):
If this is really encouraging to you, share this to somebody.
Someone needs an encouraging word and to be reminded of this,
speak life not death. Chapter one forty one, verse three
says this set a guard over my mouth, Lord, keep
watch over the door.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
Of my lips. Your lips is a door.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
Yeah, what's in the heart is gonna come out that door.
Speaker 3 (10:13):
Yes, it's like fresh water and salt water can't come
out of the.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
Same can't come out of the same spree, but I
call it elo.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
It can't come out of the spring the same spring.
So we got to really choose carefully. Do I want
to speak live and to speak death? And yeah, I
think it's a very it's a it's a challenging topic.
I think this is an exhortation for all of us
because we really need to take this serious. I know
when the scripture talks about that we will be held
accountable for your words, and it really should bring us
(10:51):
to a place of humility and fearing God. Really, because
if it's saying that we will be judged by words, right,
well it comes out of our mouth, that means that
we have to be very careful what comes out of
our mouths, what criticism comes out, how we speak to
the people that we live in the same home and
even an outsiders, because it does have lasting impact in
(11:15):
someone's life. And god To will for us is that
we would speak life, that we would choose.
Speaker 5 (11:19):
Life over over death.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
And yeah, I just think and it says here that
not many of you should become teachers because those who
teach will be judged more strictly and we are some
want in many ways. But it's because of that because
if you can't if you're teaching, but then over here
you can't keep a tight range of your tongue.
Speaker 5 (11:39):
You just like.
Speaker 3 (11:42):
Everywhere, it's everywhere you're cursing and doing all these different things.
Speaker 5 (11:45):
It's strong people with your mouth.
Speaker 6 (11:47):
Then wow, exactly two things that we want you to
use your tongue for and actually reflect, like ponder, you
know process, just you speaking, to do this.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
Glorify God, number I got it. Number two to bless others.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
If it doesn't do that, if it doesn't adify other yes.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
Speak the truth. But the Bible says in love.
Speaker 3 (12:12):
Love, yes, bless them, bless them and praise God. Yes,
I heard somebody to say that whenever somebody does something
wrong to them, they blessed them in Jesus' name Jesus
when somebody curses them with somebody curses that person, they
blessed them instead of cursing them back. And it talks
about like don't curse those who curse you, but like
(12:33):
bless those who hurs you real quick doesn't close.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
Out with a story actually from the Bible, we were
going through this verse a couple of nights ago, and
it was from the young lady who was a prostitute.
And we've been talking about prostitutes a lot lately if
you look at our latest video or yesterday's video, but
check this. That was rehab. But in the New Testament
there was another young lady who was considered an adulture.
(12:57):
I don't know if she was a prostitute, was she?
Speaker 2 (12:59):
But I think she was just an adulter, not just.
Speaker 1 (13:01):
Because it's very serious in God's eyes, but going out
into the street. She was pulled out of that house
right in the middle. She was caught, and then everyone
surrounded her, calling her names. They began to even say
they were going to pick up stones to stone her.
According to the wall Wow. And then Jesus walks over
and he essentially says, those without seeing cows the first stone,
(13:24):
and he writes something in the sand, and he gets
back up and he gets in the woman's face. He
bends down and he asks her, where are your accusers?
These guys were gone, And I want to just remind you,
he said, go and sin no more like you like
basically essentially, you're forgiving go and sin no more. Sometimes
(13:45):
it's important to be quiet because God is doing the work.
You know, he did a symbol of doing something in
the sand, right, What do you think he was doing
because he was silent, he didn't say a word, and
people began to move away.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
Well scholars, yeah, oh yeah, they say that he may
have written the commandments, but that's.
Speaker 5 (14:07):
We don't know.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
We don't know what he wrote there.
Speaker 1 (14:09):
Yes, but essentially whatever he did in the silence compel
people to move away. And in the same way, sometimes
you don't got to say a word and God is
going to fight your battles for you. Just sit there,
be quiet, be slow to speak. The Bible says, quick
to listen, slow to become angry, because God is working.
Speaker 2 (14:31):
When you're not.
Speaker 5 (14:32):
Yes, that's good.
Speaker 2 (14:34):
Yeah, well, love you guys, I know you guys.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
And one more thing I wanted to say is that
we have to always keep in mind this for us too,
like we are no better than anybody we have. We
go through a lot of stuff and just like any
other person, we're all learning, we're all going through this
journey together. But I think something that really reminds me
of the Scripture is that we've all been made in
(14:59):
God's like as We've been made in God's image, and
it's important that we treat each other as those that
have been made in the image of God. And that
should be something that we keep in mind that God
made us with infinite value, and that we should treat
all that God has created, people and everything with.
Speaker 5 (15:17):
Respect and honor and love.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
Super important.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
We'll keep learning how to tell you our tongue. Yes,
I think it comes down to having self control. That
is one of the fruit of the spirit is to
have self control, to really be slow to speak, quick
to listen, and slow to anger.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (15:40):
And what's about it. A lot of it is even
what you say off record. You're not even saying that,
but you're thinking it. Yeah, think you're thinking it, then
it comes out eventually.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
Great way to fill our minds first thing in the
morning is with the word of God or something giving
thanks to the Lord. First thing in the morning. Yeah,
filling our mind and our hearts with truth.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
