Speaker 1 (00:00):
Even the Bible says when you come to God, don't
be quick and rash with your words, like you're standing
before the presence of a holy God. Yeah, like, don't
rush into his presence.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
I be like God, I'm praying, like I'm talking, I'm asking,
and I'm confessing, but I just don't hear anything. And
sometimes it's because we're just talking so much that we
don't even give God the chance to speak to.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
What's up, guys, Welcome to another episode of Faith and
Familiar I'm here with my beautiful wife with.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
You, guys. Welcome back, guys, Welcome to Faith and Familia.
I hope you guys enjoy the last episode. The first
episode of us talking about we're in the Book of
James and James chapter one. We talked. We talked about
trials and temptations and how every test and trial has
a purpose in it.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
Literally, when you find yourself in a hard times, where
do you run? Who do you go to to help
get you up? You know, some times, you know, we're
like falling and we're failing, and we're like, how can
I get out of this? God is our rescuer. The
righteous man falls seven times, but yet he gets up
aid and we need God's help to get up.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
God's now we're going about to go to the second
part of James one, and uh yeah, I think we're
in for a treat here because we're going to talk
about some things near and do to our heart. But
also when the chaos of the world, when people tempt
you to lash out, what do you do? What do
you do?

Speaker 2 (01:31):
All? Right? Good? So it's James. Were in James chapter first.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
Okay, Father God, thank you and the name of Jesus,
Thank you for who you are. Thank you for your
presence and your power, always so kind and near to us,
pursuing us with your mom with their grace. Lord, help
us to respond to the goodness that you've given us,
founding your son, Jesus, Lord, the Beauty, the Majesty, help

(01:57):
us to see and taste that You're good and display
that to the world in Jesus' name. Amen.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Amen. So we're in James chapter one, verse nineteen. We're
gonna be through twenty seven and it says, my dear
brothers and sisters, take note of this. Everyone should be
quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry,
because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. Therefore,

(02:25):
get rid of all moral failth and the evil that
is so prevalent, and humbly accept the word planet in you,
which can save you. Do not merely listen to the
word and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone
who listens to the word but does not do what
it says. It's like someone who looks at his face
in a mirror, and after looking at himself, goes away

(02:47):
and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks
intently to the perfect law that gives freedom and continues
in it, not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it,
they will be blessed in what they do. Those who
consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight
brain on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.

(03:09):
Religion that God or Father accepts as pure and faultless.
Is this to look after orphans and widows in their distress,
and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
Wow, that's beautiful, powerful word.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
Yes.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
One thing that really sticks out to me is how
this letter know this? It starts out with like, know
this if you want to know anything. Know this, my
beloved brothers and sisters. Let everyone be quick to hear
and slow to speak. What is culture showing basically when
it comes to this scripture? Are they being quick to listen,

(03:46):
slow to speak? Have you found yourself being quick to listen,
slow to speak, slow to become angry? What are we
seeing these days?

Speaker 2 (03:54):
So I think, really, just I think this has always
been a problem, because I think that's why it's written here.
But even now, in this generation that we're living, we're
finding ourselves that people are doing the opposite of this, right.
We're being quick to speak and slow to listen, and

(04:15):
instead of being quick to listen and slow to speak.
We see this all over the internet. I mean, I
feel really bad for some people that just really you know,
they're posting something because they're sharing something from their heart,
and then you just see like a common as somebody
that was just quick to speak and not really hearing

(04:35):
the person's heart. And I think that that it's something
that's we've been seeing more and more in in my
personal life. There are moments where I find myself that
I'm being too quick to speak instead of listening first
and not reacting but responding and I think I think, yeah,
like God really wants us to slow down, to really

(04:58):
be people that humble, and to take the time to
listen to people, really listen and not just you know,
be quick to speak with our opinions, our ideas. What
would Jesus do? I think Jesus would have an ear
and he does have an ear to listen, and he's
patient and he's slow to speak.

Speaker 1 (05:17):
Yeah, I love that. I think the same way that
you're seeking about this. I'm thinking, even from the standpoint
if you do speak fast, are you sharing words that
tear down or build people up?

Speaker 2 (05:30):
That's good?

Speaker 1 (05:31):
I think an encouraging word, Yeah, speak that pretty quick,
like be really quick to edify and encourage people. But really,
if you have this negative stance or sense of like
urgency to say something, it probably ain't gonna be that good.
Or if you talk too much, you probably want to
slow down. The Bible says let your words be few, yeah,

(05:52):
you know, and and.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
That the person who speaks too many words be to sin.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
At least to sin. Exactly, do you hear.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
A person that's talking and talking, there's probably something that's
going to come out that's not honoring people.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
And I think. Something else that sticks out to me
is that, like even the Bible says when you come
to God, don't be quick and rash with your words,
like come, you're standing before the presence of a holy God. Yeah,
like don't rush into his presence like rest.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
Wait, listen, listen. Yeah, God is always speaking. So it's
like and and many times we want to hear from God.
We're like, God, I'm praying, like i'm talking, I'm asking
and I'm confessing, but I just don't hear anything. And
sometimes because we're just talking so much that we don't
even give God the chance to speak to it because
we're so our souls are so uneasy, they're not still,

(06:45):
like the scripture tells to be still and know that
he is God. But I like what you said that
choosing our words too, Like we can be quick to
speak and an edifying word and encouraging word, but I
know many of us are maybe maybe don't but you
have children, and I know when when you have multiple children,
it may be like don't do that, No, what are

(07:07):
you doing? And it's like this, this is quick to
speak because you're trying to prevent them from doing something
that may hurt them. Or you're trying to correct, Uh,
what is it in an attitude or what is it?
Or something something that they were doing in action, something
that could put someone else in harm or something that
was disrespectful and you want to jump in there. And

(07:28):
so I know, like even in parenthood, it's something that
we have to practice and grow in, like to really
observe the situation and make sure that we're being calm
and taking the time to really think through what we're
going to say, to respond to our children, to correct them,
to you know, disciple them and the way that they
should go. But anything else that's so good.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
That's so good because even kids are watching the way
we yes no sort of not only way we speak,
but the way we live. We're too rash and too
quick to go into things. It's probably not something that
God wants us to do. I mean, God is a
god of decency, timing, and order. This structure to even
our words. Even when God spoke, no word was wasted.

(08:13):
Our words should not be wasted. They should be deliberate,
but they should be distributed in a way that is kind,
that is with wisdom and order. So I just encourage
anybody out there, if you're in a place and recently,
like I'm preaching to myself right now because there was
a guy who was talking crazy to Myron Golden. He's

(08:35):
a guy who I look up to as an entrepreneur,
as a young man of God in the business space
that really helps Christians move forward in finances and Steward
Well and even Dave Ramsey he's a funny guy. Like
I love Dave as well. But there's people in the
comments that be saying some outland and stuff even on

(08:55):
their live videos. And I was almost provoked to respond
something like, dude, come on now, like why you call
this man a prosperity gospel? You must be have a
poverty mindset, our poor mindset, even as a Christian, Like
I wanted to say some things, but it wasn't necessarily
going to be edifying, and I just wanted to encourage

(09:17):
that man. Like now that I look later, it's like
sometimes we get so quick to say something, you know,
even myself, that we don't even think about what we're
what we're saying. We just need to take a moment
in what Jesus do? What do you reply this way?
Because I was going to go off on a god
for real, like and us in our Christian circles. We

(09:38):
got to be careful of not to be fighting each
other over little manners that are outside of the tea
of the Gospel, you know.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
Yeah, so then this leads to like human.

Speaker 1 (09:51):
Anger, m that does not produce the righteousness of God.

Speaker 2 (09:56):
To become slowly to become angry, Yeah, that's something to
practice every day. Slow to become angry because human and
anger does not produce the righteousness of God. Like it's
okay to be like it says, like be angry and
sin not but normally like our anger unless it's for

(10:16):
something that's of God. That is, like you know, like
a like a goutly anger, like like you're because of
the Gospel or somebody like that's I would think that
will be at you're you're angry about. It's righteous anger.

Speaker 1 (10:33):
It's it's an anger that basically is amendable by God.
It's something that is to thwart darkness. It's to push
back on the dominion of darkness and evil versus. And
it's in the ways of God. Though, if the spirit
would not lead you in anger to do something, listen,

(10:54):
that's not God. If it's the flesh lead to you
that's not God. I think it's so important that we
really we incline our ear, our heart to God's heart
and whenever God is angry about something, our hearts should
be angry about something.

Speaker 2 (11:10):
Yeah, it just brings me to like I think it
was Peter who slides, yeah, to push his darkness. It
was it Peter that slice that soldier's ear because they
were coming to our risk Jesus and like, you know,
and then Peter really sliced somebody's ear like he was angry.
And then at my point were like, well that kind
of seems like righteous anger, like they're taking the Messiah

(11:31):
like and but you know, even then, like Jesus was
like put that sword away, like this is not the
way that we wage war, like this is not how
we fight darkness car and exactly because the battle is
it's it's not flesh and blood, but it's spiritual. And
so yeah, I think God Jesus wants us to be

(11:52):
slow to anger and to know that the battle is
not against flesh and the comments.

Speaker 1 (11:57):
Let us know, what's the biggest, biggest issue that you
have that you typically get anger about. What is something
that in godly like righteous anger you get upset about
and share how do you deal with that? How does
God the Holy Spirit lead you to deal with that
righteous anger? And also on the other end of it.

(12:19):
Just go ahead, let's spend some time praying. Put your
prayer requests in the comments. If you have something specific
that you're struggling with, maybe it's anger, Maybe it's lashing
out at a husband or wife, a friend, a cousin,
road rage. What was that last thing that got you angry?
We want to hear about it in the comments and
also pray for you. Matter of fact, what was the

(12:41):
last thing that got you angry? Being real? Yeah, yeah,
like that's righteous anger though, like I'm getting you.

Speaker 2 (12:52):
You know, I don't know this morning? What was it?

Speaker 1 (12:55):
Was this something this morning?

Speaker 2 (12:56):
Probably it was.

Speaker 1 (12:59):
Probably one of the kids for me.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
Just no, what is something this morning? Right? Was it
this morning or yesterday?

Speaker 1 (13:06):
I remember the kids? One of our kids. Not, No,
it was probably a couple of them. Not being grateful
was one thing for me, Like I'm constantly trying to say,
even the Lord is so specific with us on being grateful,
having a heart of gratitude, not doing pity parties and
getting upset every morning and upset that we don't have

(13:26):
the things that we think we deserve. No, we need
to be grateful every single day for the things we have.
And sometimes I don't feel that way, and then I
get heavy on my kids about not being grateful, and
then I see what God feels like when we're not grateful.
So it's like a heart of gratitude is a place
where you want to be, where you want to live.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
Yeah, it's God's will for us to be thankful, but yeah,
there's just little things that we get angry about that
are just little things that you shouldn't be angry about,
but in the moment, it seems like it's the biggest
deal the world is. And I think yesterday it was
more about when you lock the doors, No, we're not

(14:10):
putting the trash bag inside the trash can. I think
you took the trash out. And then when I'm ready
to throw something, there's nothing in there, and it's just
like I'm here with the stuff. It's just little things
that are just like, oh my look, or something simple. Anyways,
little triggers, little triggers. Guys, you're not gonna make it.
We go through it too. I'm sure you guys do too.

(14:33):
Job yeah, oh my, if we start, we won't finish.
So let's see and then where are we moving down?

Speaker 1 (14:42):
If anyone thinks is religious?

Speaker 2 (14:44):
Okay, well what about we're gonna do like, don't merely
listen to the word and so deceive yourself. Do what
it says. So it's like you read the word, you know,
you know this book front and back and the word,
I mean, the word really in you, but you failed
to walk it out and live it out.

Speaker 1 (15:04):
Well. But that's where the Holy Spirit comes in the
spirit of truth to reveal to you, like who won.
Jesus said, he is of the Father and the fathers
of him, like they're one, and then we are one
in Christ. So somehow, some way, he said, if he
does not leave, if he does not leave us, if

(15:27):
he does not go through to the cross and leave us,
the comforter will not come proof positive that his disciples
were wanting him to stay. But Jesus said, I got
a gift for you, and when I leave, I'm going
to send this comforter. But also the spirit of truth
to reveal to you when you're walking with me, are

(15:47):
in alignment with me, to lead you into all truths.
So it's important that we are very close one with Jesus, yes,
with the Father, but the Holy Spirit listening to the
person us.

Speaker 2 (16:00):
Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah, because it says that the person
who you know, doesn't do what the word says. It's
like a person who looked in the mirror and forgot
what he looks like. That's that's that's interesting. It's really true.
And so I know we're not going to walk it perfect,
but at least it should be uh a communion with
the Holy Spirit where you're feeling conviction when you're walking

(16:21):
and you're letting the Holy Spirit lead you. I want
to share something that happened today because today we were
walking and you know, from Afar, I have noticed this
family that was sitting and and you know it might
my flesh. I was like, well, let's not go that way,
let's just go this way. As bad as that sounds,
that's crazy because that's that's.

Speaker 1 (16:44):
Family on the ground with their children of children.

Speaker 2 (16:52):
Yes and kids. Yes. And it's not the first time
that you know that we this is very a very
common scenario here where we live in Managing, and so
I knew kind of like what to expect because normally
I know what they what the outcome is whenever I
walked past her, and so I told Ra Sean, let's
go this way. And immediately when I said that, and

(17:14):
I'm looking away, the Holy Spirit literally just started speaking
to me and gently, just gently said that the scripture
about overlooking the poor like those who overlooked the poor. Yeah,
So immediately I had to respond to that, because if
I had not responded to that, then I would be
walking in dis obedience and that will be with me,

(17:34):
and that would have been an opportunity minist of what
God wanted to do in that family. So we turned
around and I said, Okay, let's go. I had some
change on me in that time, and God wanted us
to bless that family, and so we ended up walking
towards them and we talked to them for a little bit.
We prayed over them and we blessed them. They needed
They didn't ask for anything. They didn't even ask for anything.
We offered to give what we had and the beautiful thing.

(17:58):
They just needed money for rent for the night, but
we they didn't ask for anything. And I think my
fear was that they will ask for something so how selfish,
that I will be thinking about me rather than what
what did What does God want to do with his family?
And so that was a learning lesson and I really
I felt really humble. God humbled me.

Speaker 1 (18:17):
And it's just doesn't please that you responded to the
Holy Spirit. The spirit of truth led you down the
path you should go. And therefore people get blessed.

Speaker 2 (18:29):
When you and someone else, Yes, someone else came behind
us and blessed them as well. So uh so, yeah,
that's a quick story about listening and doing because we
have read that verse about overlooking the poor and.

Speaker 1 (18:46):
Yes, basically saying I con you like if you're in
contempt of court you don't show up. You don't show up,
you leave, or you're acting a fool in the court,
you get pushed out. You're not going in accordance with
God in his heart. Whenever you say no to the poor,
like it's like you're saying no to Jesus. So guys,
take it very serious. If someone asked for you for something,

(19:09):
give it to him. Ask for your shirt, give it
to him. If he says, go, let's go with me
here one mile, come on, use wisdom, go with them,
go with them too. So, yeah, Jesus was clear on
a lot of that I'm so glad you were saying
guess that, because I mean I was ready to I
was about whatever. When you said let's go across, I
was like, let's go, let's go. But God wanted to

(19:32):
do something for that family, and we did.

Speaker 2 (19:36):
We pray for them. I pray for them, and they're
actually from Venezuela. And I don't know if you guys
have heard or tell the news about all that is
going on in Venezuela. So keep Venezuela and your prayers.
We really love them. We know people from Venezuela here
that have blessed us, so it was a blessing anyways.
So yeah, let's see we move along to the religious. Yep, religious.

Speaker 1 (20:01):
I love this part. Check this out, guys. This is
probably one of the areas in our life. We're constantly
stretching this muscle, hear metagine trying to find ways to
show up for the widows and for the orphans. And
this is new to us, Like it's a scary challenge
to move into this, but I'm thankful that God has

(20:22):
us and James to go over this. But if anyone
thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue,
he deceives his heart. The person's religion is worthless. Religion
is pure, undefouled before God and the Father. You know,
this is it. It says to visit the orphans and

(20:45):
the widows and their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained
from the world. But really, what suck out to me
on this one is the religion that work that God
like loves and he blesses is not that you would
travel across the world and you would sort of do
all these amazing things building chapels and building temples and

(21:10):
building stuff buildings. Jesus didn't invest in buildings, investing in people, people,
starting with women and children. That's where his heart was
close to. And God says this, He says, to visit orphans.
Where's a place even if you don't live overseas in
a medicine Columbia like us, there's probably a place where

(21:31):
you can go visit children. Right now in the community
center in Puerto Rico. Y'all got Boys and Girls Clubs
YMCA's different places. You have volunteer time at camps, like
how can you show up for kids that are in
the inner city population that have a ton of needs
and meet them where they are. That's what I'm excited about.

Speaker 2 (21:51):
Yeah, people serving the kids, serving the kids, serving the moms,
the widows, so single moms, and the widows, which is
those who has lost their husbands and they're all alone,
widows that are in their distress. So the ministry of
people like you, that's what Jesus is all about. He
wants us to see them, to meet them, to go

(22:12):
to hospitals, to pray for the sake too. It's all people, Jesus,
those people, and so we should be about that too,
That's right.

Speaker 1 (22:20):
I love that, And I also love how it says
is in their affliction. So find children's, find wives, find
people that are in affliction, and go serve and love
and meet them where they are and help lead them
out of that. And I think also keeping oneself in this.
I love keeping oneself unstained from the world. There's something

(22:43):
about going and doing what God says that keeps you separated.
Like you're going to guarantee be separated from the world
if you are led by the Holy Spirit and you're
doing what God called you blue, because it's contradictory to
what the world said. It's not just about what you do,
it's not about actions. But it's about starting romans well

(23:04):
one through two, which she'll pop it up on a
screen here, but check this out. It says this, do
not be conformed to the ways of the world, but
be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Want to
be separated from the world. Start in the mind. Start
in the mind, and then what a man think is
in his heart.

Speaker 2 (23:22):
So is he in the words, even the word of
God and the amen. No, Yeah, that's that's beautiful. Yeah,
I think a great extent example, aside from Jesus Mother,
Teresa was one of the persons that really was about
the work of the orphans and the people that were
in the stress, the widows. It was someone that I

(23:43):
really look up to her in that sense. She gave
her life away for those overlooked people that nobody wanted
to come near or give them bread. She was dedicated
to that. And that's the religion that God sees that
it's pure, yeah and thoughtless. Is when we care for
people in their lowest moments.

Speaker 1 (24:01):
Imagine how many people in the world, even around you,
are chasing the people who have the notoriety, who are
riding the rocket shifts of success, who go to they
go to YouTube all day and they're learning from this man,
that man, that woman, that woman, and they're always trying
to be in the presence of great. You want to
be great, be the least, go amongst the least, and

(24:23):
then you'll understand what God this scripture.

Speaker 2 (24:26):
The greatest among is a servant. It's like, wow, what
if the whole gospel it's just about lowering ourselves, like
dying to sell, not you know, and not making about
us like like we like to do, make it about us,
but actually like humbling ourselves to serve, like Jesus said,
I didn't come to be served, but to serve as

(24:48):
a ransom sus. It's the same thing for many, yes,
and well by society. You know, we're looked down upon
because of that, because why would you want to lawyer yourself?
Don't you just want to climb up the lotter of success?
Isn't that the way to success? No, success is hearing Jesus,
well done, go go and facial servant. That's right, that's success.

(25:09):
That's that's when you have really want a life and
at ready. So it's really kind of this perspective and
not being caught up in the race of this world
and what it has to offer, which is great. You
can do things for the Kingdom of God, but make
sure that you're guarding your heart and that you remain
like focused on where is it that you're going and
who is it. That's kind of gave me the final
well done and gloom because it's not gonna be CEO,

(25:33):
none of nobody.

Speaker 1 (25:35):
Not your coach, not your mom, not your dad. Okay,
but hey, this is what's gonna happen on our next video.
So we want you to subscribe. Now, go ahead and
write below in the comments where would you like us
to go after the Book of James. Listen, we start
James two in the next video. I hope you all
ready for this, and we're going to talk about sin,

(25:57):
the sin of partiality, like just being at a place
where you're not judging people, are treating them partially, and
where everything is holistic. Whenever your approach towards people and
life itself, we got to stay pure, We got to
stay holistic where we're looking at the whole picture, not
putting dividing things. Like God is not a god of confusion.

(26:20):
He's not here and there everywhere. No, He's got it
was here yesterday, today, and forever. But he is the
same guy, the same guy, and we want to be
the same people with all.

Speaker 2 (26:30):
So yeah, guys, we love you all so much. Thank

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
