(02:50):
It is just after lunch and ahot August afternoon, and Father Brown
sits at his desk in the studyof his modest parish house. He's deepened
his notebooks and monthly records. FatherBrown doesn't look up at the somb of
the doorbell. Norah, as ahousekeeper comes along the car. Does have
to study door hide. They can'tleave him alone just for one Hello,

(03:13):
Nora, Oh it's you, flamboy. Is Father Brown him. I've brought
someone to see him. This ismiss Harriage Nora. Good afternoon, Nora
Slambo told me about nothing good.I warrant, well, if you must
see father Brown, you must. He's in his juddy. Oh, thank
you, Norah, this way,Miss Harris. You know Norah's brown is
much worse than her bite. Hello, Father Brown. Well, well Flambo,

(03:40):
my this is a pleasure. I'vebrought someone to see your father.
This is missus Joyce Harridge, whohas come in and come in, my
dear, come in. Yeah,it pull up that comfortable chair from Miss
Harrig Slambo. I'm afraid we disturbingyour father. One of man's greatest pleasures
is to be disturbed to his work. It's not thank you, father.
Miss just brought me a case, father, which I think is more up

(04:01):
your houry than mine. The factis we're on our way now to talk
to a murderer in his soul. And what may shoe think, Miss Harris,
is this man you call a murdereris not guilty. Why how do
you know? I think that FatherFlambo is a detective. The only used
the man charged to his murder hasfor a detective is to prove his innocent.

(04:25):
Oh, you hit the name onmy head, father, I'm afraid
there's much I can do. Itlooks like an opening shotcase. You know,
I have never understood the meaning ofthat phrase flambo, so it will
be both often and shut is aparadox. But now I suppose, my
dear, if you tell me aboutthe man in the saddle home, someone
is called a murderer. Well,to begin with, father, sale engineer

(04:48):
rollins this is are located on theseventeen floor of the Jefferson Billing. The
whole thing happened last Sunday morning, just after I arrived at the opening.
Well every Thursday morning, just asour office opens, a man comes in
between the window and his name isLuigi County. We've all gotten annoy him

(05:10):
well over the years because his daughterscan killer. I just got into the
office now morning. Miss Harry's ribsaid he was not to come to work.
Good morning, Luther, mon,Hello darling. I'll just think what
it would delight at the beach today. I guess the think grandmother gag is

(05:31):
one to twelve. Let's plan onthe beach for the weekends. Head love
it? Oh, good morning, mister Gregory, good morning. So it's
good to not as a matter ofyour own personal feeling. If you're waiting
to get into the vat it's onlythree time. Lock won't work. Send
of it in a minute. WhenI first came to work here, I

(05:54):
was convinced him. It wasn't ntilI began getting him on time that I
discovered he actually lived in the outside. Well, I want to talk to
you about the Kennedy job after I'vegone through the mail. Clayton, Yes,
there's the window cleaner. You knowit's gotten so you can tell time
by Luigi Joyce. Yes, youknow that's a job. I wouldn't like

(06:15):
the hand what Luisi? That's somethingto the pit of my stomach, and
I soon climb out on that.I'm used to it. There's really no
danger with one of those doosted helpswindow cleaner. It's Luigi one side of

(06:35):
his solf skate boy hanging there withragery following all the way to the street.
Don't look, Leiser, you mustn'tlook, my dear goodful accent accident
pleas hanger. It's been tough throughnot an accent, Tony did Tony and

(07:00):
you mustn't say that, Tony.I know it's Tony's citizens the whole crux
of the case, Father, itwas murder, all right, because Luigi's
safety belts had been cut through witha razor blade, right so that the
minity threw his weight against fists andgave way. And then the man that
said, Lisa curious, and thenthe man shud cross Tony. That's Anthony

(07:23):
Cremona's father who he's been arrested andcharged with the murder. He was Luigie's
assistant at the Jefferson building, andit was nuts about Luigi's daughter were finding
the girl jumped so quick is ata conclusion that it was this boy who
had cut the space with the well. Apparently because the old man and the
boy were constantly arguing and fighting, there was frets and counterfeits, right,

(07:44):
Father Luigi was terribly proud of lilasevery sing heater, and had gone for
her education in Bidnet school. Hethought Tony wasn't good enough. He was
dead set against anything serious developing. The Queen their window cleaning equipment in the
closet, and both Tony and hehad a key to it. Young Tony
had plenty of opportunities this life, the belt with a lace of blade,

(08:05):
as far as a cost to confirm, that's all those to it. Yeah,
but it is is that's all theevidence against in Flambo, I's all
the police have found. Father.Oh no, that's just too black and
fight so that a nose shading. It is no covering. People are not
so simple as a first grade problemin arithmetic. You know, well,
father, I've gotten to know, tell me a little. In the last

(08:26):
year he's been so anxious to marryLisa. He's been working like a trojan
to better himself, going to nightschool studying engineer. Father Missus Harrod has
an interesting point to me. Well, it's simply this father Brown, the
Tony had struck down Lisa's father inthe midst of one of their arguments.
It would fit his character's hot tempers. But cutting through the belt for a

(08:50):
cold and characters that. Yes,Father, I think we should not put
off going to see Anthony from onein this set. But the trouble is
he see anyone. You won't talkto a lawyer, you won't see Miss
Harrige, and you won't see me. We thought that maybe with you you
might feel this well sometimes injustice willturn the man's face away from all of

(09:13):
the men. You can only tryinghardage, can only trying Cimona sholl at
at the end of this flock.Father, thank you, thank you,
Sa Flambeau. Would you and missharriage right here talk about I'm one to

(09:46):
see your Cimona. I don't wantto see anybody. I am ny.
I didn't know they son a priceto see. It'll just before they hanging.
But there are two kinds of hanging, the hanging that takes place in
the minds of men and the hangingthat takes place at the end of the
row. The chase may be valuablein both. Kay, I don't I
can't stop you even talking to me. If you want to, you may

(10:09):
open to sell the door for thembeside, can harmer when you want to
get out? Father? All right, thank you? I look at this
is some kind of a trick toget me to change my story. Since
I hasn't heard your story told me, why should I ask you to think?
Maybe it don't sound like my can'tchange the truth? And who is

(10:31):
it the psn't the leave a policeLisa? You know something far it a
minute It happened ably minute it happened, Lisa shouted out my name. But
you had threatened your father. You'reright, threatening me with a stub,
and now I'm out of all four. But I had a suit of clothes
and my fine tailor and plenty ofdoor in my pocket. I thought I
was the right guy. Yeah,so, baba, at least I hasn't

(10:56):
even been to sit. Doesn't giveme a chance, he thinks you does.
They see them my side of thewouldn't, but wasn't your side of
I never touched Luigi's safety them yetthat stuff in the same closet, But
I never touched the spelt it's going. If I was gonna murder Luigi,

(11:16):
I wouldn't have been satisfied with cuttingjust one side of itself. No,
No, that's the felt sure thatheld him up. Even one side gave
way. There's an accidental you getthe side of the felt didn't hold no
wind to cleaner would have cut justone side of the belt if they wanted
Luigi to fall to using my slomman maybe a great deluview. So you

(11:39):
see, there's your business in yourheart. It's seeping a cloud in front
of your eyes. You have friends. You know, friend who was headache
mis lambrog is infective. I hadto see you this shut mine? Do
you mean I sat of? Yeah? What I mean from if you see

(12:07):
Luca? Will you tell her?Well, you're told there are still people
that don't all. I like choosingthe man without giving them a hearing.
Well, Father, will you talkto you? Yes, yes, yes,
yes Lambo he talks with me.What do you think? Father?

(12:31):
Sometimes the things I think of frighteningeven to me. Sometimes I wish I
could give up the whole business ofthinking me concerning as guilty normous had met
father, but thinking it's improving.I'd like to sort of your office.
I'd like to see the place withit accidents happened, accident now, Father,

(12:56):
I've seen these six fool before andcutting a safety. I have a
passion for accuracy. I can't asan accident because it was acci Chadge.
You see the woundbook seen in Luigiwas never meant to die. I have
an origan cheriosophis and may eyes ona criminal and it's not in the cellar

(13:18):
the city room, and it's entirelypossible that we'll find him at the office
of Rollins and killer, may Godhave messed? And this is the officer

(13:41):
that happened. Then he said, yes, father, there's only this one
large drafting room and mister Rollins savateoffice. And that that's the vault.
Yes it is. Oh, Gregorysits there by the wicket, and nobody
goes in or out of the faultwithout being chest by m Oh what's so
valuable in the boat? Oh?Chiefly blue. We do a lot of

(14:01):
work for the government. Or veryhush hush, now, which is the
window from which the REGI fell?Oh? At that one over there at
the far end of the office,Yes, the far end, and this
herige. I think I should talkto your employer, mister Ronnings. Very
well, father, his office isright over here. Thanks starting me,

(14:26):
mister Rollings. Oh, come in, mister Rollings. This is start of
brown and flambo. So I shouldtalk to you for a moment. Come
in, Come in, if you'llexcuse me, I'll get back to my
drawing. Well, gentlemen, whatcan I do for you? We've come
about the window cleaner who was murdered. I'm the concerting mister. We've come

(14:48):
about the vows arb. Well, gentlemen, make up your mind and started
to have to tell you that langueabledesigns for blueprints and missing from your vo
I don't know if this is allabout, gentlemen, but I can assure
you there's nothing missing from the vault. You see, it works on a
time mechanism. It opens it fiveminutes past nine in the morning and closes

(15:11):
it five minutes to five at nights. All day long, Gregory sits outside
the gate, and nothing can betaken without his knowing. I trust Gregory
with anything I have. Will yourmoney, missus Allan, is more than
that, Father Brown, the secretsin that vote. If money could not
buy back, well, I onlythought if whatever was stolen, it's still

(15:33):
missing hereless. Father, first youtell me I've been robbed, and then
you wish me bad luck on topof it. Now, if I'm working
your office and someone offered me greatingthe money, but one of the blue
prinks in your evolved, he iswhat I do. I take the blueprink,
have a sort of said it,and then return it to the vog.

(15:56):
If I were sucky enough to getback in time, you'd never know
you've been to he missus An.That would be a way to do it.
Look on the mister Raby, don'tlet anyone know what they're looking for.
And if you find anything missing, come back and tell me, But
no one else. This is reallyridiculous. Look, mister Ronner, all
right, I will look you gentlemenwait here, thank you. Of course

(16:26):
I'm really an innocent bystander. Butif it wouldn't be too much trouble to
explain there, But the trouble doesn'tlie any explanation, Sambo. The trouble
lies and catching a petuliarly subtle seemurderer. That's the prime flamboard. There
was no murderer by intent. Andthe hell was Luigi supposed to fall seventeen

(16:48):
stories to the street without dying fromit? He wasn't supposed too far.
The other side of his belt shouldhave held him up. But what could
be the purpose in it? Theeverlasting greed of man flambo? Or that
was the morting. The purpose incutting Luigi's bent was purely and simply the
distract attention from the vault, anold magician's distract attention from what's really happening.

(17:11):
Everyone was at the window. Yeah, my George, it would work
certainly, if I think knew exactlywhere the blueprint he wanted was kept in
the fault. It would only takemy matters second precisely, Flambeau, and
with everyone's attention leveted in another direction, were right bound. He could designs
for a new jet propelled plane gone. You must notify the police at once,

(17:32):
not as you want the plans back. What if the thief doesn't know
that you've discovered the theft. He'stried to put them back. But how
do we catch him? Father? If we watch the ball, he won't
go in. And if we don'twatch the balls, we won't know who
puts the plans back. I thinkI can find an answer to that little
how by committing your crime, Flambeau, What are you doing here? Father?

(18:07):
Oh, I'm just sitting on thisbench, Miss Harriage. I saw
plans only, But so why areyou sitting here? When you see you
can understand why a criminal act ashe does. One must know exactly how
he feels. One must, soto speak, get inside of me.
Understand is every thought? When I'vedone this, When when I've reached the

(18:32):
point of committing the crime myself, then I know who the criminal? Sounds
complicated, understanding. The human mindis the most complicated of all sciences,
and this harriage. Now take yourselffor example. You're interesting, young Tony
Cremona. Is it just for anevery human kindness? What is it?

(18:55):
Personally and infamous? It's just thathe's a nice for always being blamed for
something. I don't think he did. I see. And if no one
is here who feels the same withyou, I know Jim Clayton. I'd
like to talk to this mister Claytonof yours, may I yes, I'll
call him Jim, Jim Jim.This is father Brown. Oh, hello,

(19:18):
father, how Joyce has been tellingme that you feel the same way
as we do about Tony Cremona. But unfortunately, just feeling something will not
help him. Yes, I know. The trouble is there aren't any clues
that point in any other direction. That's that's what makes it such a clever
crime. But just because a manpoints in a certain direction, mister Clayton,
doesn't mean that we must walk inthat direction. So I am stubbornly

(19:44):
walking in all the other directions. If you see what I mean. Here's
a telegram for your father Brown. But the telegram, well, now,

(20:06):
that's odd, It's very odd.Advise you leave office of Rollins and Keller
and don't come back. Who FatherBrown, Yes, I'm Lisa Country.
I know why you're here? Ohdo you know? Because I don't know

(20:27):
why you're here, Lisa, Iwork here. What else should I be?
Or you might be in a cellat the city jail talking to a
nice young man who was eating outhis heart because of you talking to a
murdering me. And where is yourauthority for judging? Lisa? Even a
course of law will listen to youngTony story you threatened to kill Papa.

(20:48):
He did it, and hang him. I'll stand and watch it and be
glad. Then you should be happynow, Lisa, because you've already done
the only hanging little cards him inthe pain. But Father Brown, I
came up. Person who will notlisten even to a lie cannot have much
to tell anyone, Lisa, becausewhat can she know that there's either true
or fall. Tell me who whodelivered this telegram delivered by a regular messenger?

(21:12):
Father? See, yeah, it'sa threat against you protogram. You
think the police allowed Tony to sendme that telegram from his cell in the
city jail. No, they tellme Lisa that it's possible to visit the

(21:32):
jail at any time, do youknight, I beg your pardon. But
you're mister Gregory, aren't you?Yes? I do you know? The
mechanism of that ball fascinates me.It's closed for the night. Now,

(21:56):
yes, you mean to say thatno one can open it until the morning,
not to five minutes past nine tomorrowmorning. The morrow morning, you're
certain there's no eay on earth toopen it till then. Well, Now
you may think it's odd for meto have this turn of mind, mister
Gregory, But suppose the thief wereto walk into the vault in broad day

(22:19):
night and come out with something hehad no right to have ID stop him.
But suppose he was a monstrous, big man, mister Gregory, who
could pick you up and put youaside like a child. Then night shoot
him. You see, I keepa gun in this death draw mine.

(22:41):
Well, now suppose that you weren'tat your post, mister Gregory. I'm
always at my post, always away. Whoa, whoa. That's an interesting
speculation, mister Gregory. Good night, and I'll see you in the morning,
just before you open you wonderful bought. You're coming back again tomorrow,

(23:03):
boy, Yes, unless, ofcourse, I should receive a visit from
the murderer before that time. Ohthere you are, father, I thought
you were never going to get home. A Graham Flambeaux. I've been warned

(23:26):
to give up my innocent bench sittingat problems and Kenneth, yeah, oh
oh that's the way the wind blowswell, and then you rate it's a
wind, Flambeau. But I'm tryingto say that I don't know from what
direction it blows? Or excuse me, father Brown speaking? Okay, and

(23:51):
listen who is this? Never mindwho it is? The boy won't hang
if you mind your own business. But well, what's that? You got
a telegram? Yes, yes,I got it? Did you send it?
Never mind who send it? It'sgood advice. Are you stay away
from Rollin and kell? I understand? Stay away? Hello? He hit
hello Hello. Well, now weseem to be Flambeau. Then that was

(24:18):
another morning to stay away from Rollinsand Kenneth. What are you going to
do? A turn of card tomorrow? But father, the thief won't put
the plans back while you're watching thevault. He put them back tomorrow morning,
Flambeaux, What makes you think? So it's not a matter of thinking.
I know it, and I knowwhen Flambeaux he'll put the plans back
in the vault. That's exactly tenminutes past nine, so I see seventeen.

(24:52):
Please, Oh what's the matter, father, You look worried now we've
gone? That says that touch Finnes. I am boy, so already one
minute past nine, unless the elevatorbreaks down. We don't don't, don't
even think such a soft don't don'tthink we made Oh, father Brown,

(25:19):
all, good morning, Lisa.Father. I went to see Tony last
night, did you know, Father, I don't know what I could have
been thinking of when I talked tome when I saw it. Is a
good boy, Lisa, A good, honest boy who holds you very high
in his heart. And I'm surethere's less painting now from having seen you.

(25:41):
Three minutes past nine, father,Oh, yes, yes, excuse
me, come along, Sambo.Good morning, Father Brown, Good morning,
Miss Headed, Good morning mister Claire. Father. I hope to be
here in time to see the ballsmechanism. Will you've headed right on the
nose? Father, there's Gregory endingby an off. I see you did

(26:02):
come back. Yes, I cameback, mister By. Well, now,
how how does this father? Youalways work? In thirty seconds?
I opened the door. You meanto say there's no rule of bell,
no fan fails something. No,I just opened the door. Thank ye.

(26:25):
Well now, mister Gregory, Iam disappointed. You are some high
I expected more drama. Here comesmister Rollins father. Oh, good morning,
mister Rollings, father Brown. Isimply can't hold off going to the
police any longer. I have aresponsibility to the government. Those plans,
those flans, mister Robbins, willbe in your hand in a very few
minutes. You know who took Ohyou might say that I do what What

(26:49):
time is it? Flambo? Sevenminutes? Spons mind, brother, there's
no use to lay flambo. Pleasetake those very efficient handcuffs from your pocket
and put them on mister Gregory.Well it's your party, father, right,
Gregory, hold out your hand. This is insane. I tell you
you're all insane. I had nothingto do with that window cleaners did.

(27:12):
Your charge was stealing important plans fromthe vault. Gregory. It's not true.
You know that's not true, don'tyou. Mister hun plans have been
stolen from the vault, Gregory. But I think this is a mistake.
I can't believe that you had anythingto do with my thank Gregory. To
remember too, nothing to be takenfrom the vault without Gregory's connivance. He
says he never left his post here. Well, if he didn't, then

(27:33):
he's a thief now, really,Father Brown, Gregory has been with his
thirty years. Gregory is on thelevel fither Brown. What are you doing
here on the voe waiting? Hesaid, waiting for you to bring back

(27:56):
the plans? So you knew,Well, how did you know? Well?
I didn't not really. All Iknew was that the thief would come
into the rock. You seem ashad as yourself for your own trick.
Trick the window cleaner was your trickfor distracting attention from the vod mister Gregory,
was my trick for doing the same. That was it, I confessed.

(28:19):
When you walked in here, Iwas a little puzzled after the telegram
and the man's voice on the telephonewarning me not to come back to here.
Man's voice, Yes, I andI think that you feeling saying mister
Clayton has suspected all along that youwere killed, and he tried to fight
in the yard. Why did youdo it? Jim and I wanted to

(28:41):
get married. He said he didn'thave enough money. Then I was offered
a big sum to steal one ofthe blueprints for just a few hours,
just long enough for it to befoodless to it. Then I could put
it back and no one would bethe wisest. But everything went wrong.
First Luigi was killed the father,Well, I never mist that, dad,
but it did happen. And thenwhen Tony was arrested, you went

(29:04):
to I wish I knew why.I wish I knew why I went to
Flambo in the first place, Becauseno person is all bad but all good.
You knew that Tony was innocent, and the goodness in you forced you
to do something to help him.A strange twist that you must now forfeit
your freedom, that's your life onlybecause you were not all bad? Helps

mystery. I do have to sayit. It doesn't quite have the feel

(31:33):
of a traditional Father Brown's story, and it may be that it was not
as philosophically deep as most of Chesterton'sstories were, but that may have been
one of the great barriers to theshow having a long life in old time
radio. Chesterton brands just not aseasily to adapt to these stories not actually

(32:00):
based on the original work. Alot of logs actually put the length of
the Father Brown Mysteries on the airat around eight weeks only. I do
have to wonder if that is accurate, because it does seem that if you
only had an eight week series that, just like when NBC did a short

that they just stick to Raymond Chandlerstories or stories about Philip Marlow. So

The Brothers Ortiz

The Brothers Ortiz

The Brothers Ortiz is the story of two brothers–both successful, but in very different ways. Gabe Ortiz becomes a third-highest ranking officer in all of Texas while his younger brother Larry climbs the ranks in Puro Tango Blast, a notorious Texas Prison gang. Gabe doesn’t know all the details of his brother’s nefarious dealings, and he’s made a point not to ask, to protect their relationship. But when Larry is murdered during a home invasion in a rented beach house, Gabe has no choice but to look into what happened that night. To solve Larry’s murder, Gabe, and the whole Ortiz family, must ask each other tough questions.
