90-talet var den stora avregleringens tid i Sverige. Den hade föregåtts av en tid där marknadsekonomin lyftes fram som löfte om ett bättre samhälle, men också av en kritik av ett grått och byråkratiskt samhälle som ströp den individuella friheten. Begrepp som valfrihet, rörlighet och effektivisering blev nya ledord och marknadstänkandet skulle ta sig in i statsförvaltning och samhällsservice. Tidigare statliga angelägenheter som post, järnväg, el och telefoni skulle nu ut på den fria marknaden.
Idag, flera decennier senare, genomsyrar marknaden det mesta i vår vardag. Allt från hur våra pensioner förvaltas, till utbud av apotek, skolor och sjukvård, men också vårt sätt att se på oss själva och våra valmöjligheter. Samtidigt växer kritiken mot marknaden. Hur stark är idén om marknaden idag? Vad skulle alternativen kunna vara?
I början av 1700-talet skrev filosofen Bernard Mandeville The Fable of the Bees, där han beskrev ett bisamhälle som blomstrade så länge varje bi drevs av sitt egenintresse, men när bina blev ärliga och dygdiga förtvinade bisamhället. Adam Smith, som brukar kallas marknadsekonomins fader, var inspirerad av Mandeville, men Smith var också moralfilosof och medveten om farorna med ett ohämmat egenintresse och betonade vikten av medkänsla och att handeln skulle gynna de allmänna. Vart tog dessa tankar vägen och var hittar vi moralen i dagens idé om marknaden?
