Back to Black (2024) is a biographical film based on the life of singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse. Directed by Sam (Nowhere Boy) Taylor-Johnson it stars Marisa Abela as Amy, Jack O'Connell as Blake Fielder-Civil, Eddie Marsan as Mitch Winehouse and Lesley Manville as Cynthia Levy.
Back to Black follows the standard music biopic structure and starts with Amy’s love of singing in her home with her dad Mitch and grandmother Cynthia. She is quickly discovered and releases her debut album Frank. Things start going downhill when Amy meets Blake, the love of her life who also happens to be a bad influence on her.
Back to Black has been heavily criticised for its representation of Mitch and Blake and failure to show Amy as anything other than a sad lonely addict. Recommendability scores reflected this and together with low scores across the other categories Back to Black scores 2.64 overall. Watch Asif Kapadia’s documentary Amy instead.
