Much on his mind.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
Michael Voss dealing with death threats ahead of tomorrow night's
Round eighteen opening game against the reigning premier.
Speaker 3 (00:08):
Collingwood's Big Guns return to the training track after illness
sweeps through the club for Friday Night Footy and access
all areas.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Simard Horse take us in the four walls of how
the umpires go about adjudicating our game.
Speaker 4 (00:22):
We've talked about this, step into it, embrace all.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Of it in the room and NT it's unedifying for
a senior coach to do that.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
They're on the side of cautia with the brain. Take
the man on. They played the best footy I've.
Speaker 5 (00:33):
Ever seen at the start of a season, and in
said the president left. The couple older said, of course
they do.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
It is the stuff that legends are made of.
Speaker 5 (00:39):
What is holding the ball?
Speaker 4 (00:41):
I don't think I could answer it clearly right now
that I could do something wrong, you know, And I
need to get and the board sacksually.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
The fans lover and with no fans no through sixty
year old round at upon us. Welcome everyone.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
They're dropping like flies here at Fox Footy. I had
Jiffordan Lewis all set to go and then down he went, and.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
Yeah, the wrong place at the wrong time. I've even
got his suit on, which is a bit bagging.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Are you filling it out?
Speaker 5 (01:15):
No? Not in some spots.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
Thirty years.
Speaker 5 (01:17):
It took sorry, Jordy, thirty years.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
It took me to get in in your just before
we get into we've got loss to get through.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
Have you enjoyed it the transition.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
It's been different. Yeah, it's it's less heavy the media stuff, my.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Coaching point of view.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
Yeah, the review process and the preview process as well.
Speaker 5 (01:39):
It's a lot short.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
Anything has a surprised about it?
Speaker 3 (01:43):
No, No, if you do the work, I feel like
you can. You can stay connected and there's just no feedback.
That's what happens other than in the media. Yeah, that's
coming on machine. But actually it was my anniversary today,
which I didn't realize. My son rang me and said
happy ANNIVERSI and I thought, well, what's happened? But I
got the ass on this day last year? So what
to the day to the day? Yeah, I think this
(02:04):
is a press conference day when falling beautifully for you?
Speaker 5 (02:07):
Yeah, twelve months gone, click.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
Twelve months down the track, it's all worked out, Okay,
he hosting a national television show.
Speaker 5 (02:13):
We'll there we go.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
The next Now, well, I've got lots of lots they
got through to get through tonight, we're going old school.
The Demon's are training Casey Field tonight, so they're going
to cross out there and have a chat with Simon
goodwhen they're training under lights, or they're supposed to be
training under lights. So I'm not sure what exactly went on.
I hope this is not a sign of things to
come from the Demons. The lights went out early in
the piece here, so.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
What are you going to doing it for? I mean,
they've got a game at one ten. What with the
reason for a night session. We used to do this
a little bit normally when we play at night, but.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
I assume they just changing it up a little bit,
trying to do something a little bit different. Horses go
and join us. Now he's filthy, he has, he's got
the opportunity. But you and he both have spent time
in the year Sanctum of the Umpires, which I'm looking
forward to talking about.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Was it how did you find it? First of all?
Speaker 5 (02:57):
Different? Yeah, it was.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
I'm not saying I'm going to be drinking the Umpire
kool aid on all the things they spoke about, but
I'm not sure wearing suits was necessary either. But it
was an interesting experience to see how much work they
actually do behind the scenes. That's the arc there, which
is magnificent at the back of Marvel and think it
was two games going on at once, there so a
lot of support staff for each game.
Speaker 5 (03:19):
It was interesting.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
J Z Clark, David Kingley Montagne coming up after this,
of course with first crack, I spoke about Lauren Wood
in a Hamburger's Kids. He's knocking down a few Jowie,
I saw that. Now neither so plenty to come tonight.
Let's get into the serious issue, and it is a
serious issue and the Michael Biss under pressure is no
question about that coach the cart footy club. They've been
a talking point front back page of the paper for
(03:42):
a long time.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
But news today that there's been all.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Usked yesterday rather a death threat breaking by air man
jay Z. I can't wait to get your thoughts on this.
There's no better place to talk about it. I know
you understand the pressures that come with the job, but
this is beyond the pal There's no question that lack
of what spoke today.
Speaker 6 (04:03):
So when you turn up on the weekend and I
do what I do, I do that for Carlton. I
do that for the next kid that's going to be
playing in the Carlton and Football Club jumper. I do
it so our football club can be you know, I
have this sustained success that we're all craving for, but
there's a way we need to behave and there's a
(04:23):
way that we need to go about it. And when
things are tough, you've got to show that support the
right way, not the wrong way. Now, if that's a
measure for some people on what it should look like,
then I'm sorry, you don't belong here, and we'll move
on and we'll make sure that we continue to bring
(04:44):
a supporter base that will support in the good times
and it will support in the bad and we'll continue
to support our people to be able to do that.
So for me, the conversation doesn't need to be anything
other than that, and it won't be for the next
six seven.
Speaker 5 (04:57):
Weeks as well.
Speaker 6 (04:59):
So I get just about different things about pressure of
the game and my job and you know what the
future looks like, Well, you know, ultimately I only need
to look across the fence to find out what inspires
me every single day, and we want to be the
best version of ourselves and that's how we're going to
do it. So that's what we're going to focus on.
Speaker 5 (05:17):
No, we've all been through that stuff. I see there
was some death thread or something. Is that is that right? Yeah,
that's that's pretty average.
Speaker 4 (05:25):
We've got no doubt he'd been doing the best job
that he can so, but that's just the world AFL
coaches living and stuff.
Speaker 5 (05:33):
Yeah, it's quite.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
Sad, isn't it.
Speaker 4 (05:34):
Like this, there's a boundary line and then you step
over that and you've got your home life, and then
there's reality of like, come on, let's let's let's be
better than that as a society, you know, as a job,
he's doing a job and he's a great person, Michael.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
And I don't know.
Speaker 5 (05:48):
I hope he's going okay.
Speaker 7 (05:50):
I've met some pretty strong, resilient characters in my time
in forty none more so than VOSSI.
Speaker 5 (05:57):
It's sort of.
Speaker 7 (06:00):
I'd expect that, you know that there'd be I mean,
that's a criminal offense that there, and there'd be criminal consequences.
Speaker 5 (06:08):
But you know, there's a flow and effect.
Speaker 6 (06:09):
The first thing you always think about is the person
beside you, or or the family member or the team,
you know, because there's a result of what I do. Yeah,
you appreciate there's an element of scrutiny that comes with that.
But then there's a there's a part that's completely unacceptable,
and I think we can all sort of agree that
(06:31):
that part is unacceptable and we don't tolerate that as
an industry. And so we leave that with the IFIL
integrity at the moment, and I expect a pretty forthright response,
great solidary.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
And support for Michael voss from the coaching brethren, no
question about that, of which you're part of.
Speaker 1 (06:50):
How brutal is this and does this surprise.
Speaker 5 (06:52):
You a little bit? I mean, the one thing Vossy
doesn't want is pity. You don't want.
Speaker 3 (06:58):
That's the worst feeling that to have people pity and
feel sorry for you, because you know you don't get
forced to do the job, that this has gone over
a certain line that you know it.
Speaker 5 (07:07):
Really shouldn't be crossed.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
But the actual pressures of a coach who's you know,
haven't met expectation, that's that's real.
Speaker 5 (07:14):
Everyone goes through that.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
If you around the game long enough, so but you
understand that guy. Yeah, yeah, we've probably started checking my
mail about four years ago, the old anthrax check just
in case it wasn't.
Speaker 5 (07:25):
It was pretty read.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
So the mail I got from the from the supporters
or whatever it was, it was pre opened a.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Right, So logistically there's just to make sure back that
comes through someone else's Yeah, yeah, some passionate supporters. But
then there's some ridiculous letters that get n I never
got to see them, but there was a few round
and then Voss, he's got to deal with a few things.
One one is obviously the team in the club and
doing his job, but there'd be someone in his family saying, listen,
(07:51):
you got to pull up, let's just get out of this,
let's just step aside, and it's not worth it. And
then there's another member of your family who say, you're
not quitting, don't you dare?
Speaker 5 (08:02):
And I had that, did you? Yeah, my dad remember
saying it to me, You're not going anywhere.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
Okay, So when you were struggling and when the pressure
was out, it was real you had members of your
family suggesting, right, this is enough's enough.
Speaker 3 (08:17):
Yeah, absolutely, And you know mine went for three or
four years, to be honest, but I didn't get to
the levels of the supporter base at West Coast. Different
than Carlton, I must admit, having some success, there's a
bit of leeway as well, but dealing with the pressure
was probably more when it got personal in the media
in particularly the West. But what Boss's going through with
that piece around the crossing the line piece, that's another
(08:42):
level which I never got.
Speaker 5 (08:43):
To really experience.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
But what he's going through from a day to day operations,
trying to lead and be stoic, try and say the
right things and back the staff and players in.
Speaker 5 (08:52):
He's got their backs all those things.
Speaker 3 (08:54):
He's doing really well, but there'll be thoughts within his mind,
this is worth it and if you gets through this,
which I think he might, then it'll be a story
to tell down the track. And we've seen that with
some other coaches over the journey with Boma, Thompson and
Dimmer and these types have gone through a dip in
their careers and then they come through.
Speaker 5 (09:10):
The other side.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
But you also see people that don't get through it
and then life goes on.
Speaker 5 (09:15):
Like I've just gone through last week.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
I just want to back over to tell me about
your old man. How did that go?
Speaker 2 (09:21):
If you're open to talking about it. I mean, your
father's huge, strong figure in your life.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
So what was his message when it was well.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
I just see you're not quitting and you're not Why
I spoke about it because I think it's time right
And he said, well you shouldn't. And then those influences
in your life are important, aren't they. And I was
trying to tell Dad I was on the back page
every day because he doesn't read the West Australian. But
working through that and in the end it's just footy.
(09:49):
You know, there's more to life, and your family is
really important how they handle things, because if there's a
family member that's really struggling, then that does creep in
your mind as well. So a lot going on with
Voss at the moment, personally, I'm sure, but he's putting
on a brave face.
Speaker 5 (10:01):
He doesn't want the pity.
Speaker 3 (10:03):
All he wants his boys to do is play well
this week and be competitive.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
Alway thought, and then when you get the game day.
By the time you get the game day, you focus
solely on what's going to take place, and they've got
a big one and it's.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
Against the Brisbane lines.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
There running premium tomorrow night at Marvel stardiing teams are
in no wholesale changes. They panic Chincotta and durd and
come in.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
Akers gets dropped, So that's a big one.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
Evans as the omitted as well from a Brisbane lines
point of view, they get stronger. Big Oscar Macaton he
comes in first games.
Speaker 5 (10:31):
So it's going to be a challenge, isn't it.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
You know, so you think any player that saw Vossi
speak today, if they don't.
Speaker 5 (10:38):
Bring maximum effort, there's something wrong. And for a while, well.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
The last two weeks, that's what we haven't seen what
their DNA. At least they've been saying. They've been competitive
around the contest the clearances inside fifty differential. It's their
ball movement, their connection inside fifty that they've struggled at.
But the effort hasn't been questioned. And since probably Port Adelaide,
the numbers don't look great with the metrics that you
(11:04):
live off in terms of pressure contested ball clearances. So
I suspect you'll go back to that.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
How many times can you go back to it?
Speaker 2 (11:13):
Well, for three weeks in a row, I reckon we've
all s out there and said, what do you want
to see?
Speaker 1 (11:16):
If you want to see effort, leaf you see.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
Effort and it was there against Collingwood, who I think
the effort was there for the first quarter in a bit,
but it wasn't sustained.
Speaker 3 (11:25):
No, Well, there's effort, then there's talent, and you know
they're playing a side that's a premiership team, so let's
not let's keep a bit of reality in what's in
front of them. That the inclusions the last two or
three weeks haven't blown me away, so it's not like
their full strength ready to go, but they've got to
get back to the minimum requirements, which Vossi stated about
a month ago that there's some parts of the game that.
Speaker 5 (11:47):
Are working really well.
Speaker 3 (11:48):
Now there's no parts, so they've got to get back
to the main strengths at which they hung the hat
on three weeks ago.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
Just a quick word on Brisbane.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
They're just doing what they need to do and you know,
been fortunate enough to be in some sick sucessful ears
as a player and as a coach. You just do
what you've got to do to win. And if it's
a twenty point win, thirty point win, ten point win,
But eventually they've got to pull out that fifth gear
and really put a team away and leave a scar
is probably what we used to call it. Can you
actually put a team to the sword and leave a scar?
Speaker 2 (12:17):
You've got no concerns with them though, No, well that's Thursday,
n Do you have concern No?
Speaker 5 (12:23):
I don't.
Speaker 2 (12:23):
I don't, but I always think it's the biggest challenge
in fort you to be able to come up and
win again after.
Speaker 5 (12:29):
You doin they might have gone through that already.
Speaker 2 (12:31):
At what point their response to put out a last
week gives you a great heart. It looked like for
the first ten or fifteen minutes you thought this Israel
know this fact that they're equivocating, and then they just
went back and reminded everybody.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
The first half of the year is probably the bigger
worry I think in your PREMIERU.
Speaker 1 (12:48):
Yeah, they'd be sharpening up now seven weeks ago.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
And their health is the biggest factory speaking a health.
Bit of a health drama with the Magpies. As we said,
Josh DeCosta join us last night, I couldn't get there
as he more was coming.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
He couldn't get Was.
Speaker 5 (12:59):
He really crooked? We just didn't want to come on.
Speaker 1 (13:00):
Well, let's have a listen to Craig mccra you don't
want to come on. Of course he wanted to come on.
Speaker 5 (13:05):
He wasn't here.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
He's the coach, Craig mccraye. Today.
Speaker 4 (13:09):
It's probably been two weeks now, and we were probably
worse last week, to be honest, and we're just used
a bit of the old what we learned in the
old times of like don't come in if you're sick,
and it's not about policy.
Speaker 5 (13:20):
Bobby Hill, will we see him? Mate?
Speaker 4 (13:22):
True, Bobby's sick, Bob Shultz, see, yeah, he's he trained
really really well. Today. We're wrapped for the way he's prepared.
He was ill last week, which really was the only
reason he did play. He was ready to really push
the boundaries of that.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
But he'll play this week yet.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
So last week the issue, Darcy Boy, Decos Boys, Darcy
Moore all trained today, Lucky Shields still cyber, we're going
to return.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
Still know, Bobby Hill going for nine straight?
Speaker 3 (13:51):
Yeah, and we nine straight too often, No, And it's
been pretty impressive. Like it's not based on talent, but
they've got talent. So it's a system based process they
live by on Mondays, they're not showing the flashy things.
They're showing the knock ons, the team ethos around the
predictability that down the line plays they do well, the
(14:12):
help site support. From a back line point of view,
it's not built off talent, but to have talent to
complement your system is it's great to have. And can
you go through a full season? Who's the last team
that went through the whole season without a dip is
probably a good question I asked.
Speaker 1 (14:26):
Spoke to Joey yesterday.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
I mean, one of the great things that Craig McRae
has got in his back pocket is who's not playing
and who has to come back between now and the
end of the year.
Speaker 3 (14:33):
It's going to be a really good conversation for them
to if they have that health, because that's what they
haven't had in the last two or three years, and
all of a sudden they come back and or the
last year anyway, and.
Speaker 5 (14:42):
They've got some good decisions to make, all.
Speaker 1 (14:43):
Right, thanks to Ossie Broadband. Let's get to our D
day scenario.
Speaker 5 (14:47):
Who have you got a D Day?
Speaker 3 (14:50):
I've got Gold Coast that's this big game for them,
Like this time every year they've been around the mark
and way back to when at Gary Ablett was playing, when.
Speaker 5 (14:58):
They were nine and four or something.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
And I think this game now is talk about the
big Boy month, and I know Dimmer will decide when
that is. I got the feeling this is the first
game of a very difficult block that will define this season.
Speaker 5 (15:12):
So this would be huge for them. It's a home game.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
They've got everything happening up there on top of Collingwood
playing there, so it looks wet that.
Speaker 5 (15:22):
Wet and sticky and humid.
Speaker 3 (15:23):
So that might suit them.
Speaker 5 (15:25):
We looked at some.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
Vision about them compared to Richmond a few weeks ago,
the very similar style with the Ford hanble and the
aggressive way they bounce off half back. So looking forward
to see what they do. What about you?
Speaker 1 (15:36):
I love it.
Speaker 2 (15:37):
I think it's I think it's perfect timing for the
Gold Coast Suns. And Damion Harbwitt spoke on this today.
Speaker 8 (15:44):
Is this the biggest game in Sun's history? Well, I've
only been here rating months, so every Aska coach, every
game is a big game. Being perfectly honest, I know
that there'll be a lot of talk around, a lot
of shatter around it sort of thing. Hopefully it's the
beginning of a lot of big games for people of
the son.
Speaker 5 (16:01):
So you know, we think we're we've.
Speaker 8 (16:03):
Got a pretty special group that's capable of.
Speaker 5 (16:05):
Some really good things.
Speaker 8 (16:06):
So you know, hopefully a lot of Suns fans get
out there and show some support, but more importantly jump
on board. I think this side is really really capable
of doing some pretty impressive things in the not too
distant future.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
Can't mate record crowd expect that a twenty five thousand
If you're there, Nitro Circus is going to be involved.
Speaker 5 (16:22):
As Nitro Circus an elephant, is it?
Speaker 2 (16:24):
I know they're your favorites. They're the motorbikes, you do
the flips and all that stuff.
Speaker 1 (16:28):
Why why why?
Speaker 2 (16:30):
Because it's an experience, Adam who this is the whole experience.
Speaker 1 (16:33):
Not everyone's going to be is enamored with?
Speaker 5 (16:35):
Was that on the ground.
Speaker 1 (16:36):
I'm not sure if this is going to be in
the center circle. But look at that. Tell me you're
not impressed?
Speaker 5 (16:41):
Both, No, that's I'm not.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
Well, someone will be maybe the case.
Speaker 5 (16:48):
What's your D day?
Speaker 1 (16:49):
My D day is free.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
I'm going for the dock. I'm not going for them.
I think the Dockers have got I think it's great
that they're playing hawth On it home under some pressure
SCG loss Skin Sydney. Expectations are there and it's real
and they you know, you've been as close to these
team as anyone they and Justin Longmire would be expected
(17:11):
to play finals this year.
Speaker 3 (17:12):
Yeah, it's funny. They lose to Collingwood by thirteen points.
They win six in a row and they have a
good showing against Sydney that I know, we all know
where they're coming from. And now it's like the pressure
is back on. I know they're ninth and that's the problem,
but the form line has been pretty good.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
Yeahs They've got a Hawthorne on Collingwood the next two weeks.
Speaker 5 (17:30):
That's that's why it's real.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
Then too, the Hawthorne game at home, the Collingwood game away,
So they need to sort of park this one and
get a win, I would think, and then worry about
what's coming for the rest.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
Of the way.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
Great games coming up, some great games coming.
Speaker 5 (17:43):
Up this weekend and really look to it.
Speaker 1 (17:45):
I'm going to take a break.
Speaker 2 (17:46):
Simon Goodwin is going to join us next from Casey
Field has been a regular part of IFL three sixty.
Speaker 5 (17:51):
Journey this year, the Highs and the Lows.
Speaker 2 (17:53):
They won five on the bounce there, they've lost five
on the bounce.
Speaker 1 (17:56):
They've got a.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
Month of footy ahead that I'm just smart, determined exactly
where they're going.
Speaker 1 (18:01):
And then John Longmire, the horse that joined
Speaker 2 (18:04):
Us, fascinating insight into the world of AFL umpiring
