Speaker 1 (00:00):
The big Footy issues from every angle, dissected by a
team that follows the game closer than anyone else wherever
you are around the planet. This is your ultimate guide
to the AFL. This is the Fox Footy Podcast.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Yes, the feeling around the AFL changes significantly when the
rounds start with a two round twenty is upon us
with a light at the end of a tunnel now clear.
For some, that's limping to the finish line. For others,
it's the start of a golden opportunity for that is
within reach. As September looms large and here at the
Fox Footy Podcast, we're sprinting to the finish line with

(00:41):
much more left in the tank. Hello, Welcome to this
week's episode. Ben Waterworth with you as his pessimistic Crows
observer Will Fakner. Hello there, Fork Aarthener and Ben. Pleasure
to be here again, also joining us because Max is
off this week. Maxi's off for the next two weeks
as well. It's quite jarring not having Max on the podcast,
but filling in the just working Melbourne based Fox Sports

(01:02):
news reporter and a man who appears in podcasts or
on podcasts in his sleep. The package Drew Jones.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
Hello, Drew, Yes, hello and welcome. Nice to be with
you on a Fox Footy podcast. And can I just
say the highlight of my podcasting Fox Footy career in
the bunker downstairs, its been a long time ago. Adam
Balwyn called Basher Hooley a crab. I do remember that,
and Basha Houley went on to arguably deserve enormous metal

(01:29):
halfway through the twenty seventeen Grand Final. Anyway, I just
wanted to put that out there early. Shout out to
Adam who's doing the work. But that will just stick
in my memory forever because it was overly aggressive.

Speaker 4 (01:41):
How far into Bach's career when we're.

Speaker 3 (01:43):
Talking was twenty sixteen when Richmond Astralia before Yeah, right,
so he was only twenty games away from nearly winning
a normal probably should have ten seasons of the podcast
means we've been in this building for a long time.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
We have, we've b here a while, just quickly before
we sort of look at the state of play with
it from a run home powerrankings perspective. If Stephen may
sent directly to the tribunal, I think Jared put this
nicely on three sixty on Monday night because it's such
an interesting case, a test case. It's been sent directly
to the tribunal, so the d's actually don't have to
fork out the ten thousand dollars to challenge at themselves.

(02:16):
And Ralphie said last night and on the Couch that
Laura Kane and Michael Christian had been saying that in
their time that this is probably the trickiest case of
the most difficult case to adjudicate, that the Stephen may
bump what's your hunch drew heading into the hearing which
is now going to be heard on Wednesday.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
So this is good that we've freed up an extra
five minutes on the podcast because Zets would just be
going round in circles usually happens talking. So I think
he gets off because I just don't think there's any
way in that short space of time and based on
the direction of the bounce of the ball, that Stephen
may could have avoided the situation that he ended up in.
And I think it's actually cruel for us to penalize

(02:55):
an AFL player for that the book would have bounced
to Stephen. And then this is this conversation we're not
even happening. I understand there's duty of care, but I
think there's been I think the tribunal has shown in
recent times they're more willing to take into account the
possibility of a concussion happening by accident, Alex Pierce being one,
I think there was one other? Was it Lepinsky and Meek? Maybe? Oh?

Speaker 4 (03:19):
Yes?

Speaker 3 (03:19):
Early on is a not identical incidents. Everyone is different
and there are so many factors that come into this.
But I think it's really hard to expect Stephen to
avoid that contest and unfortunately Frankie Evans getting custs. But
that can happen in foota. It's a three to sixty
degree game with an oval ball. How do you see

(03:40):
it playing out? Folk?

Speaker 4 (03:41):
I agree? Sorry, I agree with Drew greatly. The only
question I would have, and this is very easy for
someone to say, and I think we're sort of in
a place now where previous sentences have been handed down
make it harder for people like me to get out
of stuff like this. And I think sometimes in retrospective
we look at cases and suspensions and say, oh, that
was probably a little bit harsh with what they come to.

(04:03):
I think it was. It certainly works in May's favor
that he didn't change his path at all. It kept
going the same way he would if the ball did
bounce up to him. The only thing I think was
mentioned a couple of times on Saturday night post game
was no short step. And I don't know how how
nitty gritty that is. That feels very very harsh.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
Like as Gary said last night, we're actually it's getting
down to the point now where what is acceptable in
literally a second, which is going you consider the speed
of the game that is played out now very very
hard because you talk about the Alex Pearce case and
how May's arms arguably weren't as low as what Alex

(04:43):
Pierce's arms were at the time and they could be
the decisive factor.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
Look, I understand why the AFL want to mitigate against
every single possible concussion and change the game in a
way that we're not going to get as many, and
they have to look after themselves from a lawsuit perspective.
I think we've all talked about that enough. We know
that as fact. The fact that it goes to the
tribunal means the AFL does believe that or they have
technically said that May has done something wrong and now

(05:10):
let's test it with the tribunal. I just think that
if the tribunal panel realistically sit down and look at
this case, that it's hard. It's going to be hard
for them to find a way for May to get
out of this.

Speaker 4 (05:21):
So is this one that you think he should get
off but he won't, or he should get off and
he will go.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
I think he should and he will.

Speaker 4 (05:29):
Okay, that's in the tribunal.

Speaker 3 (05:30):
That is my position on us. Yes, I just don't
think we could ask players to attack the ball slowly.
Let's just not how the game is played, not in
this day and age.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
All right, let's have a look at the state of
play as we really genuinely term for home. I think
there's a different feeling around the office when it's round twenty,
particularly when it's a now a twenty five round, well
twenty four and a bit round season technically. But what
Drews has come loaded to the podcast today with his
top nine power rankings, because it is we are genuinely

(06:02):
down to a top nine now. I think Sydney it's
going to be bloody hard for Sydney to make it.
So in order, Drew, what's your top nine power rankings.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
Now, can I preface this by saying I have not
had a breath least all run up at this. This
is very much, very late. I'm off the short run
here any pickle style. But I also haven't just looked
at the ladder and written it out in order. So
if you want to disagree and come at me, I'm
happy to take the feedie on board. Top of the powerankings,
I have the fantastic Adelaide Crows. The Crows I just

(06:37):
think that number one Premiership contend. They are the hottest
team wow right now, and I'm thinking if they continue
on this track, they could have two home finals at
Adelaide over They average ninety eight points a game, is
that correct? You win ninety eight percent of the time
when you get to one hundred.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
It's eerily similar to twenty seventeen.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
You know, they are top of the ladder. They are
this offensive powerhouse and get towered up in the grand
file too soon against against the tenant that lives at
the CG spoken, let's not go down that park again.
But yes, that could happen if they play, if they
played Colin in the Grand Final. But right now, at
the top of my pay power rankings at the Adelaide.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
Gross How do you feel about that as an objective
but slightly Adelaide leaning reporter.

Speaker 4 (07:23):
Probably well, said Ben, reflective of the state of the
competition right now. They've won four in a row and
the top of that of Collingwood have lost their last two,
so I think that's reflective of where things are at. Yeah,
the season nature of Collingwood's team. I think we've got
a long way in finals, but I think what's got
I can agree with what if you number two?

Speaker 3 (07:43):
So Brisbane lines are two for me? Or Colin was
dropping so he's really taking out a Maxi's chair quite well.
So the lines are a machine. They can win in
all ways with ball in hands. They've impressed me all
season and that's with Kadeen Coleman not even in the
site for Fletcher probably the most improved play in the game,

(08:03):
certainly top three and then forward they've just found ways
to keep goals. Charlie Cameron hasn't had a great season,
but Logan Morrow steps up Calamachi who would be surprised
if he steps up into the clutch roll again when
finals roll around, and just they just keep they're rolling
at the moment they bat so deep in the midfield.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
So number two adelaide Brisbane if it were going off
betterally to Carlton.

Speaker 3 (08:30):
Next but not quite. Blues will not feature, thank you, Drew. Third.
I've got to really close, I'll be honest. I wasn't
aware that this was a Premiership power rankings though it
was just a AFL. No, it is a power rankings.
But okay, well if I have Freemantle next, because I
can't in good conscience have Freemantle behind Collingwood because they've

(08:51):
just beaten it short at the MCG. So I have
Freemantle third. So they've won eight of their last nine games.
They've claimed now three extremely impressive away wins over this
last little stretch, and three of their last four games
they've come from behind in the last quarter to win.
And that is a Freemantle side that we haven't seen previously.

(09:11):
They absolutely bottled it in the last four games of
last season. I think they lead in almost all those
games going into the last quarter and watched them and
all of a sudden, it feels like Justin Longmuir has
found a way to cure that massive hole in Freemantle's armory.
So to speak, and then Colling would be after the doctor.

(09:32):
Colling would have fourth, But just wanted to give a
shout out to Patrick Voss, who has gone from Liz
Clogger to game changerrancing pony.

Speaker 2 (09:41):
Trying to think of a man who plays with chest
out more than Patrick Voss. Maybe Robert Campbell back in
the day, the former Hawthorne ruckman was a serious chest
out operator. But what a guy who plays with presence.
It's remarkable that he was clearly like the third or
fourth banana in the key Ford power rankings there at Fremantle.
But he's a a difference maker and that could be

(10:01):
a genuine weapon for them come finals.

Speaker 4 (10:03):
So cheap the way they got him as well, you know,
I think essen and probably looking back at that and
saying it would have been nice to have him in
our hands at the moment. But yeah, it's so good
seeing someone in the big stage. I just see a stat.
I think he averages the most goals of anyone on
the MCG, unsurprisingly, but yeah, so what perhaps the only
person to have kicked six goals on debut at the
MCG in the States.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
And yeah, so if Collingwood's fourth, who's making up the
bottom half of the topic there.

Speaker 3 (10:30):
I just wanted to say on Vos. Yeah, the fact
that he got delisted by Essendon, it adds to the
chest out, It adds to like he is a chip
on the shoulder guy. He goes out there and he's like,
no one believes in me, but I believe in me
and that's what's made him.

Speaker 4 (10:44):
See man, who do you think you are? I am?
Have you seen that in the bowling? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (10:47):
That's him. So Collingwood next, we know what they can do.
They've lost two in a row, but obviously superb season side.
So next up I've got gws SO five and the bounce.
Now for the Giants, thinker and I have Finn Callahan
as one of the most informed players in the comp
right now, want of the best to watch and the
combination of Whitfield and ash off half back I just

(11:09):
find very sexy.

Speaker 4 (11:10):
They're going to get Kelly Hogan and Sam Taylor back
this week.

Speaker 3 (11:16):
Stand by and just get Brett Daniels ready for for Yes's.
It's a nice selection conundrum for Adam Kingsley. The team
they have. Okay, Geelong next, just going on. They're just
doing their thing. Maybe they're in a training block that
the traditional contenders training block sort of this part of
the season. So Bailey Smith hasn't played a genuinely good

(11:41):
game for about five or six weeks. He's missed two
of those has laid out, so there's been a buy
in there. So he is in a little just a trough.
But most of the season has been peak, So the
Cats will start to peak again when Baz gets back
to where it should be. Loving Jack Martin and I
think he's a finals wild card because he's tough, he

(12:03):
can play numerous position taxes and bargain Cats picks. Yes,
Gold Coast very disappointing against the Crows. Of course, how
much trust on the on the spectrum did they lose?

Speaker 2 (12:17):
For you guys, it was a yeah, it was a chunk.
It was a chunk out. But I think when Damian
Harwick pretty bluntly says it was every team in our
situation gets kicked in the nuts and that was our
turn tonight. If they get another one this week or
in the coming weeks, I think that's the bigger loss
of trust it was. It was more than a Mulligan

(12:39):
because of it's hard to say to Mulligan when you
don't kick goal in an entire half of footy for.

Speaker 4 (12:44):
The first time in that history as well, which is
saying something.

Speaker 2 (12:47):
But yeah, they they wouldn't want and I don't think
they would, you know, stop to a level like that again,
but you wouldn't want a similarly disappointing performance in the
short term.

Speaker 4 (12:57):
They're on their last straw. The one thing I will
say for on field point of view was they were
at least kicking inside fifty. They had more inside fifties
and Adelaide in the first half, so it wasn't as
if they couldn't get their hands on the ball at
all or I would cause defensive half turnovers. It was
just their kicking, just going inside fifty, which is like
they were trying to find Adelaide players and put it
down their throat. So yeah, execution the biggest issue they

(13:19):
are knotting their hands on the ball.

Speaker 3 (13:21):
May have been a Sydney thunder all about thirteen situations, yes,
very niche Bb. Sometimes things just happen, and on that
night the thunder nicked everything they did and the Suns
may have done that. They actually didn't drop their bundle,
so I'm certainly not giving up on them yet, but
it was one of those ones where you're like, oh, okay,
maybe they're not as good as we thought. So Hawks

(13:42):
and Next haven't hit their absolute heights, but they beat
the Western Bulldogs relatively recently. They had to grind that
one out in Tazzy Will Day back this week is
pretty enticing for them, and they just have to work
out this forward structure now, don't they. They've got all
the pieces there. Who are they going to go with?
Is it Charles Royce or Calshad or mitche Lewis However

(14:05):
that all works out. I trust Sam Mitchell, and I
trust the coach, and I trust Chris Scott, so the
Hawks will come good. And just because the Dogs don't
trust look Beverage, I'm just not enjoying what the Dogs
are rolling out right now. I feel for them because
their record against top nine is now one and eight, Yes,
but all the losses have been by what three goals

(14:26):
all less? So they're in the conversation. But I've got
Swan's ahead of them, yeah right, I've got them ahead
of them in the power rankings right now because this
ones are coming good at the right time and they
could rattle some cages on the run hand.

Speaker 2 (14:38):
The Dogs are in trouble. It looks like four because
now assuming that Gold Coast defeats Essendon in the final
round and things go to plan for the Suns and
they don't get another kick in the nuts, they're two
games back from a few teams now the Dogs, and
they have Essenon coming up and a blockbuster Friday night,
then the Giants at the Giants at Marble, the Eagles

(14:59):
at at Marvel second last game, yeah, penultimate round and
then Freemantle at Marvel, which is looking like the sort
of Sunday night clash us at the MCG the MCG.
Sorry in between that, yes, yeah.

Speaker 4 (15:11):
Yeah, big concerns like they have the list, don't they like?
As Drew said, they haven't been thumps. They they've taken
it to all the good teams this year and they've
just fallen over at the last hurdle every single time.

Speaker 2 (15:23):
Do you agree with Mike Sheen's take last night and
on the couch that the Dogs and Beverage both parties
jumped too early on a contract extension.

Speaker 4 (15:33):
I don't think so. For the fact that I still
think Bevo would be the right go to coach the
next year. It was a two year deal. I think
Bevo signed. No, I don't have an issue with it.
I think he clearly has the trust of the players. Yeah,
I don't know how much I read into them that
they have the list. They've competed with all the top teams.
Sometimes it just isn't your year, and I think they
were heavily hit by injury in the first month or

(15:53):
so from memory. They also haven't had one of their
staff wars in Jamara. I think a lot of people,
certainly myself and Way heading into this year before his
olf field issues, thought it was probably gonna be the
year that he would burst. I don't think that can
be underrated. And they've got, as I said, good young talent.
I think they listed off last week on three sixty.
Maybe your crack as to how many guys under the
age of twenty five that haven't played I think it

(16:15):
was niked out on first crack. How many players under
the age of twenty five that have played fifty games
or less. And they're all pretty good. There's still a
few question marks on some of them, but in terms
of the future in the least, I think Beveridge has
still has a pretty good one and a lot of
his stars still gonna be there for the next few years,
maybe bar Liver and Liam Jones. I've got a pretty
settled line up outside of that, so it just might

(16:38):
not be their year all right.

Speaker 3 (16:40):
Just at the other end of the ladder, Drew, I
thought I signed a pre contract arrangement that I wouldn't
have to talk about the West Coast eager.

Speaker 2 (16:47):
Richmond thumped West Coast on the weekend. Richmond kicked over
one hundred points for the first time this season. Now
I tip West I wouldn't be the only person that tip.
Would have tiped West Coast head heading into the game
when you look at the sort of form leading in. Yeah,
Richmond defeated s the week before, but West Coast form
in recent weeks had been pretty good. Can you put
your finger on what went down in particularly that was

(17:07):
the third quarter, wasn't it Whether the Tigers blitzed them
with eight goals?

Speaker 3 (17:10):
Yeah? So West Coast actually started quite well, didn't get
a lot of reward on the scoreboard, and then there
were probably three or four calamitous errors or turnovers which
directly resulted in goals for Freeman, sorry for Richmond, and
then the forward half pressure that the Eagles were exerting.

(17:30):
It just got picked apart a few times, and there
was just these weird moments where there was like eight
Richmond players running into the front half and there was
like four West Coast defenders. So there was some game
style stuff that mcquolta got wrong. There was a lack
of execution from the players, and then my view is
that they just totally dropped their bundle, lost all confidence

(17:52):
and the Tigers just got on a run and the
game was once they started, just goal after go on
the third quarter, the game was over. It's just interesting
that if they brought in a couple of senior players,
including Kelly, who essentially said, I don't want to play
for it anymore, drop me back to the waffle. If
I play well as a midfielder in the raffle and
earn in my spot, I want to come back as

(18:13):
a mid And then he was absolutely deplorable and you know,
got his ass handed to him by Taranto Hopper, et cetera.
Through the midfield. Pelley came in weirdly for his first game.
Eagles fans up in arms about not sure what the
point of that really was, especially starting a start yes,
and then you know Leam Ryan of course was always
going to come back. But this is where the frustration builds,

(18:35):
is that like Tom Gross isn't playing, bo Allen's not playing,
Like there's these young guys who are Luca Grego who
the fans want to see, and so there's only two
guys on the list I haven't Dado is one of them.
He's had a decent season down in the twos. So
that this is when things really get nasty is because

(18:57):
like the selection feels wrong and then the players don't execute, confidence,
look shot and sort of. Yeah, it's just it's kind
of ugly now. So my guess would be that there'll
be a few changes this week and that there'll be
some young guys coming.

Speaker 4 (19:11):
I have to ask you, Drew, I couldn't believe. I
actually looked at it last night. I was so disbelieve
looking through West Coasts at a contract list this year.
Tim Kelly signed a two year deal in May this year.
What did you make of that?

Speaker 3 (19:24):
Yeah, I don't know why it was a two year contract.
I think I would have been okay with a one
year extension. The two years doesn't make sense because I
just can't imagine that there would have been any competition
for his signature. So I don't understand that there's been
some really baffling stuff like the fact that they chose
the Hawthorne pick ahead of Carlton just spoke to a

(19:45):
level of disorganization.

Speaker 2 (19:47):
Because Matt Clarke was sort of hurried into he didn't
have a massive runway in the lead up to last
year's trade and draft period.

Speaker 3 (19:53):
And I think that's that's a reasonable argument to say
that he couldn't he wasn't as repaired to he could
have been, and that might be the whole of the
list management and recruiting space. But just as a club
to make that decision, there's good football people in place
at the footy club to talk through that. Even allowing
Hawthorne to trade their first round pick away instead of

(20:16):
getting that for barrass Just little things like that have
just been simmering away. And then the Kelly two year deal. Yes,
I mean I could have gone about this for a while. Ultimately,
like you look at Richmond, so they're senior players on
the weekend Hopper and Toronto through the midfield, broad down
back with Jaden Short, Tom Lynch occasionally camd McIntosh playing

(20:37):
a role. There's probably one or two others Boston, Nan Curvis.
They've got the senior guys in the right spots, whereas
West Coast have got a medium small forward in Liam Ryan.
It's one of our experienced players. Good in a good
team and you know they've got good intercepting defenders, guys
that can hold things together. West Coast down back apart
from Liam Duggan, it's like young guys and second chance

(21:01):
guys like Sandy Brock And so it's just the allocation
of the experience and the veterans and the premiership players
just feels off. Whereas Richmond is the exact opposite. They've
got them in the right spots and then they've got
all this young talent and all of a sudden they're
off and away and they've won five games and they're
rebuilds like supercharged. West Coast just look like they're flagging.

Speaker 4 (21:20):
So one more thing, So where does this sit like
right now, that loss after Richard on the weekend, Where
does it sit for you as a West Coast fan?
Do you feel like you're more backwards than you have
been at any point in recent recent history? Or is
it sort of you still haven't, like, what's the optimistic
lens here and where does that sit on the weekend?
In the grand scheme of things.

Speaker 3 (21:38):
Nothing gets lower than the one ninety seven point loss
or whatever or whatever it was. But again, that was
the cover and there was a period, there was a
period of time where there was like a lot of
one hundred point losses sort of on the back of
each other. So you can't get lower than then the
read possible re signing news, I think is everyone like
a little bit of a boost the two plus nine

(21:59):
or you know, whatever it's going to be. But yeah,
I mean from a West Coast fan perspective, and I
think I can speak for a broad majority. They want
to see effort, young players play. Season can't end quickly enough,
and then let's get to the draft and let's see
what we can do with the potential.

Speaker 2 (22:17):
Two beautiful segue because tomorrow on Foxfooty dot com today
but that is a Wednesday morning, the top thirty draft
power rankings will come out. What type of players, Drew
would you like to see West Coast get? So it's
all signs pointing to them having pick one and likely
pick two. Considering Oscar Allen hasn't re signed it. It
seems that like he's destined for Brisbane on a decent deal,

(22:38):
which would hand them ban one compensation. Therefore pick two.
So the first two picks in the draft, what type
of players would you? Well, I suppose, but when you're
at that early as well, you're normally taking just best available.

Speaker 3 (22:51):
Yeah. So if West Coast said came out the start
of the period and said, with the keeping one and
two and we're taking the two best players, yep, then
I would be okay with So I think sort of
Willem dur has been will thrown around as that guy
Brendan think Brennan got up. Okay, so you're the you're
the draft expert, not me so, but my guess would
be that West will have the best player available and

(23:14):
probably best midfield are available. Yeah, and then there has
been some talk that they would trade pick two to
try and maybe get one of the young w a guys.
Is it Rodriguez. Rodriguez has been there.

Speaker 2 (23:26):
I think tomorrow I've I've got Jacob Farrow, who is
a Jordan one of the eight centement. It's a bit
bit smaller, but a Jordan Dawson like defender who has
been sort of thrown into the midfield a little bit.
But I speaking the scouts in recent days, they would
be very surprised. Now if Jacob Farroh is not the
first WA player taken.

Speaker 3 (23:47):
In the draft, and where does he sit in the
I've got him fifteen in the rankings. He's well ahead
of Rodriguez.

Speaker 2 (23:53):
Yeah, I've got Rodriguez in early twenties, and then I've
got a play called Sam Swaddling in between those.

Speaker 3 (23:59):
Two who play. So West Coast of drafts had probably
forty WA guys over the last seven years or whatever,
and almost all of them have sucked. So my advice
to West Coast would be, don't worry about the passport,
just take the best guys are available. But there is
an argument for maybe three good players in the top
fifteen is better than two, but depending on depth of draft,

(24:25):
so maybe taking the best tools available to it that
are available is a good move. And then they've got
Hawthorne's future first. Maybe that gets your Farroh, So perhaps
that's the way that they go. Just quickly, I want
to throw this to you guys about West Coast. So
this is turning to the next podcast. I Apologe. So
there's been talk of West Coast needing experience midfielder to

(24:46):
go with Harley. Tim Kelly doesn't seem to be that
guy Elliot Yo. We don't know about his body but he,
like Reid has missed Yo as like the bodyguard is there?
Like people talking about like Jack Steele and like is there?
Do you think that's there's merit to the Eagles spending
some draft capital to get someone who can stand next

(25:08):
to Read and opposition teams actually have to go. If
we don't look after this guy, he will hurt us.
Or we tag Read and accept this other player is
going to do. Would Jack Steel go to West Coast?

Speaker 4 (25:20):
I don't know what level of interest there would be
from different clubs. I think on everything that Jack Steele
is a good chance to leave. I think the end
of the yeah contracts to tweeny twenty seven, that's been
something that's sort of been boiling away for a couple
of months now, and then the clubs that would suit him,
I think West Coast would be right up there. Would
he want to move is a completely different question which

(25:42):
I can't answer.

Speaker 3 (25:43):
But he could earn one point two fits the.

Speaker 4 (25:45):
Bill, fits the Bill and totally agree with what you're saying.
I think also like to go back as well, like
missing you know, and Sheed. Obviously he's now retired, but
those two veterans in the midfield that Richmond might have
equivalents to in their side makes for a hard comparison.
But yeah, West Coast should be in the market for
Jack Steel again. Where that goes I don't know, but

(26:08):
it certainly wouldn't surprise me if you see Jack still
playing in a different club next year. In terms of
other veteran midfielders on the market, I don't Matt Crouch
like he's out a contract to Adelaide, massive Matt Crouch
fan myself, Yes you are, but they just where Adelaide
sits right now. He probably had a pretty poor timing,

(26:29):
unfortunate timing with his hip injury. I think you had
like twenty seven and the goal on the samf on
the weekend on limbs of minutes. But someone like him
I think also just someone that can burn you and
get the ball in the hands of the West Coast
boys a lot and potentially let Red Doo his thing. Yeah,
that sort of prototype inside midfielder.

Speaker 2 (26:46):
That is the end of segment one here on the
Nest Sorry Fox Footy podcast, It's now time for one
of our favorite segments.

Speaker 1 (26:53):
And now on the Fox Footy Podcast, another strong edition
of Australia's favorite segment, Fair or Fast.

Speaker 2 (27:01):
Drew dusting off the Fair or Fast cobwebs here, but
we'll start with the fork speaking of trade and sin Kilda.
Will Nasaia wangone Miller won't be at sin Kilda in
twenty twenty six. Fair or Fast Fair, that's a very
quick fair.

Speaker 4 (27:16):
Very quick fair. I think we were speaking of fortnit
Ago about the j Clark ten day rules, yes, which
was put on first crack, but basically saying the ten
days that proceeded about a fortnight ago. If the SIA
hadn't signed between now and then, alarm bells are going off.
As I also said last week, there's been more important
things had to deal with in the last week with
some horrible racist comments. But I think we're at the

(27:37):
point now where NASIRA is heavily leaning towards South Australia
and I think port Adelaida in the box seats.

Speaker 2 (27:41):
What did you make of him essentially playing almost as
a full time midfielder against Gelong and playing extremely well.

Speaker 4 (27:48):
Incredible covered that game, and I will say I think
the sia's outside game is exceptional. I did have a
couple of doubts as to how well someone of his
body and just his mate would go in the midfield role.
But totally blitz that just ran around. You wouldn't think
you had an opponent, and I'm sure he did because
Jeelongs midfield ping Drew Jones.

Speaker 3 (28:06):
Did ross hand Nasiah the keys as a last ditch
hail Mary to get him to resign.

Speaker 4 (28:11):
Yes, in the exact same way that Paul did the
same thing with Miles Bergberg and it worked funny well, yes,
but yes looked very good doing it.

Speaker 2 (28:18):
Drew Jack Sylvanney joining Collingwood would be the most unromantic
footy prospect imaginable, fair or fast.

Speaker 3 (28:29):
I'm going to say fast because to me, a name
like Sylvanney being at a big Melbourne club that is romance.
But outside of Carlton, you know what, Carlton have not
been shooting the lights out in any way, shape or
form very fairst. So if he went to Collingwood and
came fifth in their best and fairest and want a flag,
I think that would be actually quite funny.

Speaker 4 (28:49):
Are you concerned? Do you think he'll go?

Speaker 3 (28:52):
I don't know. I don't think so.

Speaker 2 (28:53):
But I was told doing the ring around that that
that male has been doing the rounds for a while.
The Jack Sylvanne's a Collingwood stuff, So I think it's
I think it's real. Whether he actually entertains it, I'm
not sure. Carlton and have been It took a bit
of convincing, but Carlton have shown some faith towards Jack
and resign him on sort of the shorter term deals,

(29:14):
and I think we'll reward him with a longer deal
considering the form that he has shown. But from a
Collingwood perspective, it makes a lot of sense. It feels,
it feels a need.

Speaker 3 (29:24):
So what's the spot that he takes? Like? Who who's
currently filling that role? Sorry Christian without notice as the
third defender? So I tried briefly Guinness in that role.

Speaker 2 (29:34):
They did yeah, which and he unfortunately went down with injury.
Is it a It's not obviously a long long term
for post Jeremy Howe, but that's in the when he
eventually retires.

Speaker 3 (29:47):
So four year deal on the table from Carlton for Jack.

Speaker 2 (29:50):
I think so yes, yeah, well I don't want will
clubs are wasting their time trying to lure Joe Danaher.

Speaker 3 (29:58):
Out of retirement, fair or far, that's fair.

Speaker 4 (30:00):
I think if we rewind three or four weeks ago,
Fagan was asked about it, and I think Fagan would
have a pretty good idea to where Joe sits on this,
and he gave it zero point one percent chance and
that was coming back to Brisbane. So yeah, I think
probably a waste of time. Maybe I'm proven wrong. Maybe
for the good of the game, I hope I'm proven wrong.

Speaker 2 (30:18):
Came after Mitch Cleary's report on seven last Night drew
that Melbourne have apparently reached out, specifically Simon Goodwin in
an attempt to try and lure Joe Danaher out of retirement,
and how mich framed it was it is the sign
of how much Melbourne really wants to keep position forward
at the moment.

Speaker 3 (30:36):
Would you just wait a little longer, let him get
the itch back a bit more like this? They've gone
too early, false start pack.

Speaker 2 (30:46):
Darcy Moore should have been suspended for his need to
the back of Josh Tracy.

Speaker 3 (30:51):
Fair or fast. I'm gonna say fast. It's a fine.
It's a misconduct fine, and it was so easy for
Michael Christian to do it. And I can see why they.
I can see how they've framed the reasoning to not
find him. But from my perspective, he knew exactly what
he's doing and that should be a fine.

Speaker 2 (31:09):
Yeah, it was described as a non football acts by
a lot of pundits. Actually on Monday night, it was
surprised that it wasn't even sighted. Fork Freemantle has a
right to feel disrespected by Craig McCrae's postgame comments, fair
or fast, The comments being Freeman will play a good
brand of footy when they're up and going, isn't don't they?

(31:31):
Maybe they should play it a bit more of that.

Speaker 4 (31:33):
Just feels a bit passive, doesn't it a little passive?
I think they have a right to be disrespected, And
I think Craig's probably a little bit upset that he
lost by a point on his home deck. In situation
they would normally win themselves, but it was an excellent win. Yeah,
I'd be offended. Offended, Drew, are you offended? Despite being
an Eagles fan?

Speaker 3 (31:51):
I thot that was interesting by Craig. No Frio should
be offended. And yeah, how good was that kick by
Bailey Banfield to Hayden Young middle of the ground, a
Hayden Young like kid toy? That was awesome? No, that
was that was passive aggressive love Craig.

Speaker 2 (32:08):
But just just take the loss, Okay, okay, last one pack.
A purpose built afl W boutique stadium would be long
over due, fair or fast.

Speaker 3 (32:17):
I think that's fair. I think this is an absolutely
fantastic idea. As a fan of Premier league like the
English Premier League, a boutique stadium is just so bloody good.
And the idea of making a little smaller, making the
game a bit perhaps a bit more more goals, more
like viewer friendly. I think it's just such a great

(32:39):
idea and it gives the girls and the women, the
players something that's theirs, like icon Park is like, is
that the logical spot? Well, yes, because where do you
find something that's close to the city where you can
build a new stadium. But icon Park was presented as
the home of the afl W and it has amazing

(33:00):
history within our game, but it's not really theirs. They've
just made a little home there, temporary home for them.
To have a purpose built sat him just for them.
I think it shows a real commitment to the competition,
which the AFL have already shown, but it just gives
them something that's really theirs.

Speaker 2 (33:17):
He surprised that not much has been obviously that the
Carlton Club facilities are very good out there, but from
a spectator point of view, when you go to watch
a game of AFLW or or an under eighteen's game
in recent times, or there's been preseason matches at Icon Pact,
it is not the most fan friendly experience to go

(33:39):
out there. And what is surprised nothing has been still
being done. It has been sort of lingering for two decades.

Speaker 3 (33:45):
Basically now huge financial investment, isn't it, And maybe perhaps
like COVID, came at the wrong time in terms of
money being taken out of the game and then reallocated.
But going to any suburban ground you have to accept
that when you go there's a romance, but that there's
also drawbacks in terms of the facilities. It's going to
gather around and going to nord Norwood amazing viewing experience,

(34:09):
but if you want to grab a cold beverage like
you're going to be waiting like half an hour, so
there's checks and balances here, But yeah, I think if
we could get something that stay of the art, just
for the gours for it. Did you put up with
the thirty minute wait? Esc you N? I left the
left the venue, there's a pub right across the road,
consumed a beverage and then walked back into the game

(34:31):
bath hotel. I don't know, but it was a serious,
serious venue, right, excellent?

Speaker 2 (34:37):
You two can rave about try it out next year.
Southutralian Establishments off air. Just before we get to the
mail bag, you were at the Greg Swan press conference
on Monday? Sure or certainly listened or watched Greg Swan's
press conference on Monday. He's had his first day as
the new head of AFL Footy operations, a game length

(35:01):
high on the agenda, to the point where he might
try and even make a few tweaks to bring the
game length down. This year four games are averaging one
hundred and twenty seven minutes per game, up from one
hundred and twenty one in twenty twenty one. I think
it was what do you think should be at the
top of his priority list? Greeks one's priority list.

Speaker 3 (35:19):
Drew as.

Speaker 2 (35:22):
As he takes on this new role and said he
had forty three pages of stuff for requests from clubs.

Speaker 3 (35:30):
Okay, top of the agenda, subn see you later. I
have no interest in seeing young players start debuts as subs.
It makes it half from a fantasy perspective as well.
The fantasy community hate this. They hate it with a passion.
The coaches don't like it either. I think, wasn't it
like fifteen of the eighteen coaches were against it or

(35:52):
something like that for the Straw poll.

Speaker 4 (35:54):
So Michell seem to think it was sixteen to two
and three sixteen last night.

Speaker 3 (35:57):
Yeah, so not. Coaches don't always get their way. From
my perspective and from most people's perspective, I think, let's
just cam this up. The idea of a player then
having to run like five k's on the ground, it
is an odd look.

Speaker 2 (36:08):
Isn't it that you and I have done the press
box shifts and we're typing away transcribing them.

Speaker 3 (36:12):
Is and James twenty six laps of the mcg SO
shout out to James's forging a nice career, Richmond. So yeah,
Subra gone. So people will get sick of me talking
about this anyone who follows me on Twitter. Wild Card weekend,
just give it to me. Seven, eight, nine, two wild

(36:33):
card games. It's in the weekend off, So the top
six getting advantage just to get the week off. And
you know this this season, you get the drama of
the jostling for positions. Then there's one team that's fighting
for tenth spot. Is it the Swans? Who can you
know maintain this run? Blah blah blah, And then just

(36:54):
it's a top six and there's four wild card spots,
so just forget the top eight. Yeah, and I think
that creates excitement. I also have some interest in splitting
up the comp into the different conferences after who plays
each other once, But that's that's another conversation. And then
my third one is find a way to get game

(37:14):
time down, but it's not at the expense of the ruckmen.
So at the moment they're talking about speeding everything up
and if the ruckman don't get to the right contest
and too bad, Like, let's not kill off the ruckmen,
like it's an interesting part of the game, suspe specific position,
specific type of athlete, So let's still find a way

(37:36):
to look after them without having the game time, Brodie Grugny.
Owners need those sixty odd points. You need a safe
captain that's right. Anything to add their fork.

Speaker 4 (37:47):
Maybe the lines at norwd Oval during gather around or
trying to get a beverage, maybe that might help. Drew
also actually.

Speaker 2 (37:54):
Thought you were talking about the wing lines because it
was soccer field you're talking about.

Speaker 3 (38:00):
You talked about.

Speaker 2 (38:01):
I thought that's what that's what you would The wings
are so skinny.

Speaker 4 (38:05):
Was like, geez, these are just small boundaries at all.
What I'm going to get a beer at the road.
I know, not much to add. I think the head
on most of them. I wouldn't mind seeing cayleb Daniel
going to hit out like that could be fun.

Speaker 3 (38:15):
Like so this is like in os kick when they
allocate too players the same height.

Speaker 4 (38:20):
Yes, yeah, that'd be good.

Speaker 3 (38:21):
So what do we see on the bounce that that
was talked about get rid of today? Yeah, you've got
to get rid of it. Premonial.

Speaker 2 (38:28):
No, No, I don't think I understand the argument in
terms of it might deter rockwork and another cross for rucks.
But I come from it from an umpire's perspective, because
considering that the nature and the speed of the game
and four umpires has helped, but the bounce is actually
quite a debilitating skill physically to do in the modern

(38:53):
day game. I know so many umpires that have struggled
with back injuries because mainly because of the bounce in
the past. And if trying to keep umpires in the
game is a struggle, I think one getting rid of
the bounce would Yeah, one help physically, but to the
bounds is a bloody hard skill to do, and sometimes
the best some of them might be cracking decision makers,

(39:15):
have excellent fitness, but they actually can't get on the
AFL is because they can't bounce. So that would open
up even more opportunities that we get some of the
best whistleblowers actually into the AFL.

Speaker 4 (39:24):
That's the strongess I've sent you on for a while. Yeah,
I've been very strong. I've been very strong on the
getting rid of the bounce for a long time. That's
good or back in the game. Is that what you're
in sinuation?

Speaker 2 (39:33):
I didn't think of that. Gosh razer comes in on
a Tuesday night and lights up the building.

Speaker 3 (39:38):
It is a good man. So what I would love
is if either someone from the umpiring department or even
Greek Swan. If he could just give us the breakdown
and say there's twenty six umpires right now who we
believe are AFL standard but are currently not on our
roster because of the lack of ability to bounds. I'd
love to hear a different experience explanation of out it.

(40:01):
But it's a great argument as to why we should
get rid of it. It's now time to open up
the mail bag on the.

Speaker 1 (40:07):
Fox Woody podcast. It's time to open up the mail bag.
Have a question for the panel. Tweet us every Monday
morning at Fox Footy.

Speaker 2 (40:17):
A few questions have come in via x. Firstly from
Ben moss holland Will Bailely Smith. It's interesting because he
just raised him Drew will Badly Smith be in the
All Australian team this year quick part one.

Speaker 3 (40:29):
Question he'll be in the squad? In the squad will
he being the twenty two? If we stop the season
right now, he would be in the team in my view,
but he could play himself out of the team in
the last six.

Speaker 2 (40:40):
Games and then one for you fourk if Nasaiwang and
A Miller keeps playing midfield for the next five weeks.
With similar output. What position does he get in the
All Australian team.

Speaker 4 (40:48):
Oh, great question. Ah, it's probably half back, just because
it's the easiest place to put slack. I think the
ullustranslations often look for someone that can put outside the
midfield to fill up the half backs and the half forwards,
most of the half forwards. But because I pick him up,
it's a great example. Yes, yeah, I think you've seen
one a half back. I actually wouldn't be mad if

(41:08):
you see him on a half forward either. I know
he's not a traditional but he's a genuine utility, which
I think it's more marked for that. I just hate
seeing there was a season where Zach Merrett played four
percent wing and sat on the wing all the half
forward I can't do that.

Speaker 3 (41:20):
Well, who's the other half back playing?

Speaker 2 (41:22):
Oh it was Bailey Dale earlier on in the year.

Speaker 3 (41:27):
Yeah, I think.

Speaker 4 (41:28):
I mean Shane Riola's injury has been good. He's gotten
better the last six weeks. There's a period where him
and Whitfield, in my opinion, we're getting a lot of
the ball, but they weren't doing a whole lot with it.
But that was more Giants issue than I think then personally.
John Nobles had a very god year as well.

Speaker 3 (41:42):
Yes, good, he'll be in the forty four.

Speaker 2 (41:44):
Question from Mitch Robinson. I don't think it's a former
Carlton and Brisbane player, but nonetheless, do you think he's
asking about Brisbane though? Do you think Kitty Coleman and
Dane Zorco in the same back line possessed enough defensive
accountability to hold up?

Speaker 4 (41:57):
This has Drew's DNA written all over it, both because
very prominent AFL fantasy players.

Speaker 3 (42:02):
We don't care about playing defense fantasy. So I just
think danz Oco is a fantastic footballer and a great
team man. So I think if he needs to slightly adjust,
he's been cotton. If he wants to he needs to
slightly adjust his role, I'm sure he will do that.
Whether he's capable of playing defense, that I don't know.

(42:25):
Kitty Coleman is a very talented footballer. I think the
window for him is closing on the season and it
needs to happen soon for him, otherwise he'll risk the
Lions society that they don't want to shake up their
current back six. All right.

Speaker 2 (42:39):
Question from Jason X on X regarding Harley Reid him
being criticized for acting too aggressively. Is him being harassed
by the opposition each week and abused by opposing fans
not really taken into account enough. Anyone will act out
a little if they're being ongoingly bullied in.

Speaker 4 (42:56):
Life has drew all over it again.

Speaker 2 (43:00):
I was expecting you to answer that, So, is Heim
being harassed by the opposition each week and abused by
opposing fans not really taken into account enough.

Speaker 3 (43:08):
I mean, the courage of Harley Reid is quite utterly extensive, ridiculous.
He's had a really good six weeks yeap, And yeah,
I mean we talked about before like he's got no
he's got no mates to look after him, so yeah,
I mean I.

Speaker 2 (43:25):
Think that's starting to get recognized as well, like the
lack of Elliott no know, not being there, the hole
that's left and then Tim Kelly's subpart form.

Speaker 3 (43:33):
So Harley Reid will always be a combative, competitive player
and he clearly at the moment as a twenty year old,
is not totally able to control his emotions on the
footy field. So my guess is that you will always
see an element of this from Harleey, but he will
become more disciplined as he gets older.

Speaker 4 (43:50):
It's more amplified on a losing team as well, right,
Like you're not going to have critics coming at you
after a ten goal win. You just see more of
it because they're losing more.

Speaker 3 (43:57):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (43:58):
All right, And last one from Wheell's mate Flagland Hills.
I'm in Melbourne this weekend. Are any of the other
Fox Footy podcasts hosts able to join myself and the
Fork for a Sunday lunch and a few Beers's venue?

Speaker 4 (44:11):
Thanks Locky, great question. True, I'm not so sure. I
know Locke's coming over this weekend. I think you will?

Speaker 3 (44:17):
He be running here?

Speaker 4 (44:18):
He actually is. He's here for ten k race on
Sunday morning Albert Park, is it I believe?

Speaker 3 (44:23):
So?

Speaker 4 (44:23):
Yeah? Cross country yes, yes, lucky runner to our thirty
maraths on time. I'm sure he will hate me saying,
but yes, he's over here for the weekend for a
race so excellent. Say don't I think Max probably won't
be there? Really better?

Speaker 3 (44:34):
No?

Speaker 4 (44:34):
Max in seventy.

Speaker 3 (44:35):
Barley By the way, at the moment, it's not Max, Like,
can I just say the venue that I expect you
to go to? Perhaps corner of High Street and Williams.

Speaker 4 (44:45):
You're thinking about Erica Hotels, Yeah, don't mind it there.

Speaker 3 (44:47):
It just seems like it's got your finger prints.

Speaker 4 (44:50):
All had DNA there, No London tavern, that sort of area.
Corners good. Yeah is Richmond Colin might be a shout someday.

Speaker 2 (44:58):
Very niche Melbour an inner city reference there. Richmond and
Collings were paying playing for the Steve McKee Cup a
little bit later. We'll get to that game soon. Yes,
it's the Ruckman. We'll start with the tips and the
tips and the cups. Now, Hawthorne and Carlton on Thursday night,
but Daniel half a Cup up for grabs, hera pak
who wins extraordinary stuff.

Speaker 3 (45:16):
The Blues will get out for Doc. But I think
Hawthorne in the game by three goals, all right, Concur
Concur Essenon and Bulldogs for the Mark Alvi Cup. Who
the hell is Mark Alvi?

Speaker 2 (45:27):
Mark Alvi used to play for the Western Bulldogs and
for the Essendon Bombers, and he's I think quite prominent
on X.

Speaker 3 (45:33):
I think I actually had the yeah yeah Dogs, Yeah
yeah Dogs, Giants and Swans. How about this?

Speaker 2 (45:41):
So the two games on the Friday night so Essendon
Bulldogs starts at seven twenty and the Giants and the
Swan start at seven fifty, so you'll see I think
it'll quickly go to from five oh three to five
oh four for the last quarter, you'll see the Giants
and the Swans.

Speaker 3 (45:56):
Interesting fix string. Jedlamb Cup up for grabs by the way, yes,
which could also be applied to a GWS against Carlton game.
Jed Lamb popped up on Twitter recently did he commented
on sorry? On Insta he commented on something and referenced
the fact that he got punched basically in the face
by Josha Hooley. Remember the podcast has come full sir,

(46:19):
So I'm tipping the GWS Giants.

Speaker 4 (46:23):
Giants have to They have a pretty poor record against
Sydney of late. Interestingly, as I pinned in the team's
chat last night, Ben gs's last four games I played
against Sydney that they've won have been for a combined
margin of six points. So if Jeds wins, gonna be
a close thriller.

Speaker 2 (46:38):
Gold Coast and Brisbane for the Jared Brennan Cup one
Duke Jared Brennan.

Speaker 3 (46:43):
Cup lines lines from Mantle and West Coast for the
Brendan Fuster Cup. Oh yes, the man from Gingin.

Speaker 2 (46:56):
Rockman, wasn't he back in the day forward Brendan, Yes,
Danian Metropolis for Stiff, as was Stiff Jiro and Hugh Dixon,
Greg Harding Stephen Giro.

Speaker 3 (47:08):
Was he a top of player for the West Coast?
Played one game? Shout out to Aaron Black. Yes, the
school teacher Freemantle win depends how bad they want it,
but they could win this by twenty girls if they
really want it. Wow.

Speaker 4 (47:20):
Okay, three ten.

Speaker 3 (47:21):
Girls, North Melbourne and Geelong for the Cameron Thurly Cup.
Oh jeez, very average football. Good afternoon game, yeah Geelong.

Speaker 4 (47:33):
Geelong under the roof could get ugly. I don't know. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (47:38):
North Richmond now going above North on the ladder, and
Richmond obviously has North Melbourne's pick as well, so looking
nice there for the Tigers.

Speaker 3 (47:46):
Yes. The whitlock Yest Matt Witlady and Jack Whitlock went
to Port Adelaide, hopefully on the verge of debuting soon.

Speaker 2 (47:54):
He might play in the game between the Adelaide Crows
and the Port Adelaide Power on Saturday night for the
brad Simes Up.

Speaker 3 (48:00):
Yes, Matthew Matthew Bode was still in the discussion.

Speaker 2 (48:03):
Real Billy Frampton, Billy Frampton, Yes, points is now Collingwood, Yes.

Speaker 3 (48:09):
Crows win.

Speaker 4 (48:10):
Uh yeah, Crows win. Every game that port played from
this point one in the season just feels like one
they could but should win.

Speaker 3 (48:18):
Can't wait for Bergman v. Dawson good matchup to very
similar head.

Speaker 4 (48:22):
Would you like to see them go head to head?
Not even just to run with roll?

Speaker 2 (48:24):
I want I want head to head baby all Yeah,
Richmond and Collingwood for the Steve McKee Cupp could be
busy inner city establishments prior to the game, pre.

Speaker 3 (48:34):

speaking of the London tavern out sidebar. So the North
Melbourne Football Club celebrated their one hundred years and they
went to London and Tabor the next day. I've got
the three to one. Have you inside word on best
on podcast? Would you like me to just reveal or

(48:55):
do you want to have like a guest each who
might feature with Kingy amongst the three.

Speaker 4 (49:01):
I'd be happy with him in there.

Speaker 3 (49:03):
I mean I wouldn't be surprised if he would feature
in just about all of the top three voting for
any sort of any premiership, any sort of football event.
So he's just a norm Smith medallists got the three
votes and I'm told in very good authority that he
went back to back across the Thursday and the Friday night,
and that is Shannon Shannon Grant right. Two votes Yes

(49:25):
to a man who won the number eight No. Number
twenty one Guernsey and versatile player, workman like Cory jer
Cory Jones didn't play. He didn't play in the premiership though,

excellent three. Colin would get the job done the.

Speaker 4 (50:02):

I didn't have to think I didn't think Jess Simple
it was gonna be in my bingo card today.

podcast that you didn't think you'll get.

Speaker 2 (50:18):
A strong third person reference to finish off for Saint
Kilda and Melbourne complete the round for the Dean Kent Cup.

Speaker 3 (50:27):
Hink Kent's good. I'll go Sint Kilda and I think
Nasiah and Cassiah Oh has a fantastic like shootout, like
we're going to get two big games from two absolute jets.

Speaker 4 (50:45):
Sant Kilda as well. It scringe season at Moravian. Yeah,
