(00:00):
The lead story for Thursday, April 11,
Apple's efforts to upgrade Siri and develop Apple
intelligence have been plagued by indecision,
leadership issues, and underperforming
AI models,
Internet conflicts, technical missteps,
and a fictitious
WWDC
demo

(00:20):
have highlighted Apple's struggle to keep pace with
competitors.
Optimism remains as leadership shifts towards a more
open
results driven
approach.
I wanna welcome you to episode 1,813.
Of course, this story
as it leads today shows a little bit
of chaos,

(00:40):
which is not necessarily
normal
at Apple,
being they're pretty steadfast in everything
they do.
But apparently, they've weighed multiple options for the
back end of Apple AI.
And,
one was initially going to have some of
the AI
language model result result of

(01:02):
living on the phone.
Then they changed their mind and wanna go
to a bigger model and have everything
live in the cloud.
And, you know, the idea was really to
try to have the best of both worlds.
But,
oh, their their privacy
stance in a whole bunch of other things
have really prompted major major,

(01:23):
issues.
And the Apple AI
group has been dubbed aimless internally
while employees are said to refer to,
Siri as a as a hot potato,
this is is not a good look at
at Apple. Matter of fact, it took
like eighteen months or something like that just

(01:45):
to have a decision
on changing the
the
hey, Siri
to just Siri.
And, yeah,
it it hasn't really worked out well. But,
again,
Apple managers told engineers they're forbidden from including

(02:05):
models from other companies
in a final Apple product.
But Apple started the project
and,
code name Blink
to develop voice commands
that control apps and complete tasks for the
Vision Pro,
but we know kinda how that's all went.
So,
you know, the only feature from the WWDC

(02:28):
demonstration that was activated in test devices
was Apple intelligent pulsing colorful ribbon around the
edge of the display.
So some employees are said to be optimistic
that
Craig Federigh and Michael Rockwell can turn
Siri around, but
he's been instructed

(02:48):
the engineers to do whatever it takes to
build the best AI features even that means
using open source models. So,
a bit of panic,
definitely happening,
in the Apple ecosphere.
But again, I wanna welcome to episode 1,813.
Of course, I'm your host, Todd Cochran.

So a little bit of changes here.
I continue to improve.
I was able to get the the Facecam
Pro from Elgato working on my Mac mini
finally.
So everything's been switched over
to the Mac Mini and I'm on a

(06:21):
single screen for a bit.
The hub
that I had for the MacBook Pro does
not support,
that I tried to use with the Mac.
Maybe
they don't work together and doesn't support a
second monitor. I've got a second monitor here.
So in a couple days, a new hub

(06:41):
will arrive and and everything. I'll be at
back to two monitors and,
and, you know, it's taken a while to
get this thing dialed in.
I tell you when you have a lot
of devices,
webcam,
you have
external monitors, you have
some stuff that's used to help me switch

(07:03):
the show and different things that are going
on here. The Stream Deck,
you get more than two, three, four USB
devices plugged in
to a Mac and, man, sometimes it just
starts
having issues.
And, that's kind of,
what we've been dealing with and, you know,
that's one thing that's an advantage

(07:25):
of when I'm back in the studio in
Michigan and on the TriCaster,
I I don't have to worry about
connections. It's all the inputs just work.
And, I would say that is probably a
major advantage
of a Windows machine. Of course, I hear
people having the same type of USB issues
with, Windows as well. But,

(07:46):
they just for some reason,
Macs just just do not the more you
scale,
the more it chokes
literally. So anyway, glad you're all here. Thanks
so very much.
And,
let's go ahead and and get into,

(08:06):
the rest of the stack here.
There's a good article
on CNET talking about the fiber advantage
and this is specifically
about for those of you that are lucky
enough to have fiber to
your home,
being able to have,
on the high speed connection.

(08:26):
And they're saying if you can get fiber
broadband
to your home, it's gonna be worth more.
But a lack of ethical act a lack
of equitable access to fast Internet puts people
at disadvantage.
You know, this is,
this is the truth. I I got an
email from someone,
today that was basically saying, hey, Todd. Here's

(08:48):
a study about
Michigan Internet and blah blah blah blah blah.
And they talked about all the haves but
not all the haves not. So I kinda
blasted the guy. I said, listen. You've covered
everything about everyone that has a connection, but
you haven't talked about those
that don't.
And I kinda went in to explain,
my situation. Of course, I have Starlink,

(09:09):
in Michigan, which has saved the day,
but nothing beats
a fixed wired connection or a fixed fiber
connection.
And this is the the genesis of this
article saying that you definitely have,
an advantage if you and you get your
house value is more
if you have if you have fiber and

(09:29):
it it really, really makes sense.
We talked a little bit about in the
last show, cost of tariffs have been just
absolutely,
you know, things have been going crazy in
the market.
I always say when times are like this,
just let it ride. You'll be okay. Things
will come back. It always does.
But, Apple is,

(09:52):
airlifting
600
tons of iPhones from India to beat
the the tariffs
and 600 tons. Think about that. Think about
that number.
That that's
that's pretty amazing,
if you ask me,
in in a big big way.

(10:13):
So,
definitely,
give it a check and, or not give
it a check, but we'll see how long
Apple can keep,
the prices down
on iPhones with that big of a lift.
But what is 600 tons?
I guess they're saying about 1,500,000

(10:34):
phones.
So what is that? About a week of
sales?
Time will tell here with,
when prices go up. And of course, it's
affected from all countries. Of course, now there's
a little bit of a reprieve
but stuff out of China,
man,
still at war with them in in a
big big way.

(10:56):
Motorola,
you know, again, I don't know who buys
Motorola phones but the next Razer
phone will be unveiled on April 24. A
new teaser video shows off three new
phones and and, of course,
the reveal date. So just
be aware of that.
There is a proposal,

(11:16):
that being made
that
the world's oldest satellite has been in space
for sixty seven years and engineers want to
bring it home.
A proposed mission
seeks to retrieve Vanguard one and displayed as
an ancient relic
on the space age.
And,

(11:37):
time will tell
if this plays out
and whether or not
they're able to come up with a plan
to, to make this happen.
Obviously, think about employing SpaceX to get it,
but,
time will tell if they're able to get
the money and and get a retrieval plan
together,

(11:58):
to bring it home.
But again, it's been in space for sixty
seven years and the reason it hasn't deorbited
is because
it was in a,
unique elliptical
orbit or high elliptical orbit
and, continues
to,
to, doesn't operate. Of course, it quit operating
in 1964

(12:19):
but,
it is still,
in in orbit.
Amazon is proposing to spend about 15,000,000,000
on new US warehouses.
So,
that is
continued expansion.
They want 80 new sites
to add to its existing 600 facilities.

(12:41):
And,
I'm sure that
with
the business coming out of China being affected,
that may throw a damper in things. But
so far,
they want to continue. But they're inviting capital
partners
to submit proposals and what's seen as a
welcome news,
based on, you know, everything else going on

(13:02):
in business right now. Of course, we talked
about the
the stock market a little bit here. You
know, it was down
then it went back up and then it
slid back down
and volatile time.
If those have been day trading, I'm sure
we had a lot of fun.
But,
again,

(13:23):
I think the market just doesn't like, you
know, change too much.
But, again,
the administration says they're focusing on Main Street,
not Wall Street. And I think some of
you will appreciate that. You might your four
zero one k's may not, but some of
you may appreciate that from, you know, all
the devastation that's happened to the country since
1996,

(13:45):
really since businesses started moving out of The
United States. We'll see if this strategy,
works or not.
But one thing's for sure, wherever we go,
we're gonna be able to stay communicated.
They
or stay stay in communications.
So what's discussed right now is satellite phone
tech.

(14:05):
You know, it's coming to your mobile devices
but they're they're trying to determine,
what it's gonna cost. Now T Mobile has
already said that the satellite service will be
included at no extra cost on high value
subscriptions and I I don't know what that
actual
means,
but the company announced a beta,
in in February.

(14:26):
And I'm sure that,
those that have been using it,
appreciate it.
But I think what will happen is is
some
some folks will have a,
an add on fee.
Even T Mobile said customers' other plans can
add it for $15 a month. Now if

(14:48):
you are in a rural area
where there's no connectivity,
this could be a godsend. Now,
one New Zealand has said that they're giving
it to their customers free of charge,
But we'll see where other come countries,
come into the mix
at, at points down down the road.

(15:09):
Windows Hello logins are borked for some users
after its latest updates. If your PC doesn't
recognize your face, it might need a little
kick with a workaround and PC World has
included
a workaround. So if you've been using your
face to unlock your Windows device,
be aware that there is a
an update and also,

(15:31):
a workaround to get that working for you.
So, just be aware of that.
Google has released a new Android system update
with battery life improvements announcement
is included in
Google Play Services version 25.13

(15:51):
that introduces update to improve battery life and
connectivity across various Android devices.
As part of the rollout, Google Wallet now
allows users to add nicknames to,
their passes and the other Android system intelligence
v dot 23 update includes addition of logging
for adapt to sound
and code optimization

(16:12):
for
a smart dictation.
They've,
they're planning to go to Mars
and they're trying to figure out
what can live, what can't,
what's gonna be impacted.
Researchers have bombarded lichens
with a year's worth of Martian radiation in

(16:33):
just five hours. They survived hinting
that extremophiles
could potentially live on the red planet. Now
Earth based life forms known as lichens
may be tough enough to survive on Mars.
Mars is not an easy place,
but,
these type of algae and fungi and bacteria,

(16:57):
are definitely,
at least in this initial round,
up for the challenge.
This is a
you know, you still have to call things
out.
Our safety experts at NHTSA,
which regulates Tesla, have an axed by Doge.

(17:17):
Jobs cuts at the US traffic safety regular
investigated by Elon,
muscle
called Doge,
disproportionately hit staff assessing self driving risk hampering
oversight of tech on which the world's,
richest man has staked the future of Tesla.
So apparently, 30 National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration workers were dismissed. The question

(17:39):
is how many were left?
You know, the the it isn't clear in
this article that all 30 were cut but
was there 300
or 500 or 600? How many were actually
working there? And that's the issue here with
some of these articles. They don't
they don't have
transparency

(17:59):
in the
in in how many people were left over.
It just says disproportionate
and we're we're made
to guess or made to think
that it was actually that number or was
it?
Made is new tech wants you using phones
in theaters. Made is partnering with Bloom House
to launch a MovieMate

(18:21):
that encouraged moviegoers to use their phones during
theatrical
screenings beginning with an April 30 showing of
Megan at Bloom House halfway to Halloween Film
Festival.
According to Variety, system enables viewers to chat
with a Megan themed AI chatbot,
answer trivia questions and access behind the scene
information while watching the film and theaters. Oh,

(18:42):
I'm sure that's just what we want.
Really?
Really? Is that is that what we really
want? I I'm
I'm doubtful. I really really am.
Not surprisingly US businesses are the top target
for ransomware
thus far in 2025.

(19:02):
A new report from Nord Stellar, which analyzed
dark web data found there were 2,440
new ransomware cases made public on the dark
web, up 84%
compared to the same period in 2024.
That
of that 41%
were targeted at
US businesses. So stay filed say

(19:23):
stay stay
stay safe out there, ladies and gentlemen.
OpenEye has filed a countersuit against Elon Musk
for bad faith attacks.
So basically said, hey. You've been you've been
staging press attacks and malicious campaigns
as well as making harassing legal claims and

(19:45):
a shame bid for OpenAI's
assets. So we're gonna go after you
for,
for for this bad faith attack,
which is an interesting,
interesting way to, to go after someone.
I've never heard of this kind of a
lawsuit. It gets as viable, but,
lawyers will file anything. We'll see how this

(20:07):
one,
goes.
Now I talked about Google
tracking you,
and how it works. And I I know
that
many of you probably don't care.
But you can stop Google from tracking your
smartphone, but you'll hate how it really is
implemented.

(20:28):
And,
according to a 2025
study
by professor Doug Leath of Trinity College, enterprise
to start sharing data with Google almost immediately
without any of case your consent from you.
That's a huge problem because it doesn't matter
if you never open Gmail or Google Maps
as preinstalled apps
because

(20:50):
Google Play Store starts relying information
as soon as you log in.
And it's all tied to your DSID
and the DSID cookie.
And there's really no way to opt out
of this. Google doesn't off ask for consent
or offer any upfront disclosures
during device setup.

(21:11):
The DSID cookie refreshes automatically every two weeks
and the Android ID is embedded deep in
system data.
Even now, Android features like safety core, which
scans incoming engines for explicit content
and it was quietly added in update 2024
can be uninstalled or disabled.
But with the DSID
cookie, although there's no way to turn it

(21:32):
off once you've logged in a Google account,
the cookie is to help you ensure your
personalized ad preference
is is are served and respected, quote, unquote.
So if you're hoping to remove these tracking
features
by installing an app from Android, well, there's
more new bad news here.

(21:52):
There's only one surefire method, factory reset your
device and never sign into a Google account
again.
Otherwise,
Google's gonna continue to track you
and track you
and track you.
Pretty shitty, isn't it?
Pretty pretty bad.

(22:15):
A little bit of science front here.
This is a very very rare phenomenon
and and sailors have seen these
from time to time. It's called milky seas
and there's actually very few pictures of
milky
seas. The scientists have been trying to figure
it out what it is. A new scientific

(22:36):
database
may finally reveal the secret of this ghostly
phenomenon that sailors see
and,
it it's a it's a rare biolumines
lumens.
Rare bioluminescence.
Boy, boy, that's a mouthful.
And it comes from,

(23:01):
it's a,
it's a bacteria.
And I'm not a it's a Vibrio
harvei,
which they have hypothesized
might be the source.
So,
again,
you know, if if you've seen Milky Seas,

(23:22):
you're you're in a very rare lot because
there's, again, very very actual very, very few
pit actual pictures of this.
So,
but anyway, they think
they have an idea,
from this,
specific bacteria.
NASA has just released the first ever video
of a tornado on Mars.

(23:43):
So
pretty pretty cool.
So, definitely, if if you wanna see a
tornado on Mars, definitely take a peek at
the video. Link is in the show notes.
Of course,
France is probably doing something that should be
done in The United States. France is gonna
ban students from keeping smartphones in schools.

(24:04):
Students will need to put them in a
locker or sealed pouch at the start of
the day. I know some schools have this
policy in The United States but,
I think this is something that
should be done everywhere.
Well, the Flipper Zero creators have a new
tool to fight work distractions. This is called
the busy bar

(24:24):
display. Let's coworkers know when you're busy and
don't have time to chat.
So,
you know, you put this on on your
desk somewhere in your cube
and you set the timer and it it
basically,
lets you know that that you're busy.
How do I do this with,

(24:46):
in a virtual setting? I don't think this
works. But being the office, this might be
cool. I think it's a little overkill. I'd
probably
I would probably forget to set the, to
set the timer.
One of the best budget ear brand excuse
me. One of the best budget earbuds

(25:07):
brand
just launched two super cheap noise cancelling earbuds.
So JLab GoPods
deliver hybrid ANC for just $36.99
while JLab
JBud pods
are $64.99
with spatial audio. Say that five times your
request. JLab JBud

(25:30):
pods. Yeah. You might do just like I
did. Screw it up. Hundred and $14.99,
EPYC own
open sport or labs best sounding and most
advanced,
earbuds.
So, if you weren't familiar with this brand,
they they become pretty popular.
They're not as small of as Apple earbuds,

(25:50):
but for the price,
at $36.99
and
$64.99
might be an option here for you.
First, the big question of the day is
will iPhone
cost become
more expensive? I I think the answer to
that is absolutely yes.

(26:12):
They're definitely gonna try to bring stuff out
of other countries.
But with China
facing a whopping 45%
tariff on goods it's imported,
it it is definitely gonna have an an
impact.
It's unlikely
that the company would want to have differentiated

(26:34):
prices globally. But here's the thing that many
people don't
know.
Do you know how much it costs to
make an iPhone?
There's been studies,
and individuals
that say that the iPhone
the complete construction of the physical device

(26:57):
is 10 to $20.
When you're building at scale like that in
in buying parts of scale, 10 to $20
for,
an iPhone construction. So there's there's meat on
the bone
if they wanted to make an adjustment.
Definitely lowers their profit margin for sure, but

(27:17):
they've already
have a
a massive
massive massive profit margin on the sale of
those devices.
A little bit of interesting stuff going on
in the cybersecurity world.
C I s a is under review.
A memo from the president spurred scrutiny and

(27:38):
uncertainty.
Specifically,
the administration
issued a directive
against Christopher
Krebs,
the founding director and former head of
CISA,
for weaponizing
and abusing his government authority during his tenure.
The memorandum issued by the government is not
only called out

(27:58):
called for the suspicion
suspension
of Krebs security clearance but also orders sweeping
review of c I s a activities over
the past six years.
Now
Krebs who is now the chief intelligence and
public policy officer at cybersecurity giant SentinelOne,

(28:18):
has been deemed a bad faith actor who
abused government authority and basically
that companies now because he doesn't have a
security clearances is being impacted here.
But according to the US government,
Krebs through the CIASA promoted censorship of election
information including known risks associated with certain voting

(28:39):
practices.
Similarly, Krebs through CAISA falsely and basically denied
the twenty twenty election was rigged and stolen,
I think that's probably up for debate, including
by inappropriate category dismissing widespread election malfeasance.
So,
you know,
is there a little attribution going on here?

(29:02):
Maybe.
But,
you know, at the same time,
I think we all knew that there was
a bit of,
censorship
going on,
on a
multilevel scale.
And,

(29:22):
you know, by lots of bad actors out
there.
So if he's being unfairly called out, I
don't know. But,
again, CISA
is now under review sadly.
A judge is rated an AI entrepreneur for
using a generated lawyer in court.
Jeremy DeWald, the 74 yield that the register

(29:44):
notes is behind a startup that says it's
revolution legal self representation
with AI was chewed out
during a unemployment dispute hearing on March 26
for failing to form the judge
that he had artificially generated the man presenting
his oral argument
while the court approved

(30:05):
DeWald to submit a video for his case,
justice Sally Manzan Daniels
became confused when the unknown speaker who clearly
wasn't DeWald
appeared on the screen. He said, hold on.
Interrupting the video after the avatar barely finished
his first sentence, is that console for the
case?

(30:25):
He says, I generated that.
It's not a real person.
Well,
she didn't take it too well. She said,
it would have been nice to know
that when you made your application,
you did not tell me that, sir. I
don't appreciate being misled.
You're not going to use this
courtroom as a launch for your business.

(30:47):
So it did not go over well.
Disclose.
Disclose. Disclose.
Judges get very pissy when you do stuff
in their courtrooms that,
they were not expecting.
More woes for the Nissan LEAF. The Nissan
LEAF hack for remote spying and and
basically a physical takeover.

(31:09):
Researchers have found vulnerabilities that can be exploited
remotely to take control of a Nissan LEAF's
functions
including physical controls.
This was done by PC Automotive
and the researchers target a second generation Nissan
LEAF made in 2020.
The vulnerabilities found
they found enabled them to use infotainment systems,

(31:31):
Bluetooth capabilities
that infiltrate the car's internal network.
They were then able to escalate privileges and
establish a CNC channel over cellular communication and
maintain stealthy and persistent access.
The research showed that an attacker could exploit
the vulnerability spy and the owner by tracking
the car's location,
tracking taking screenshots of the infotainment system, and

(31:52):
recording people talking in the vehicle.
They're also able to remotely take control of
various physical functions including doors, wipers, horn, mirrors,
windows, lights,
and even
the steering wheel.
So they've been assigned some significant
vulnerabilities,
CVEs,
and

(32:14):
Nissan, of course, has declined to,
to respond to this. But,
yeah. That's kinda scary, isn't it?
Samsung's new lite cordless vacuum is as powerful
as a Dyson and has AI smarts. You
know, thank goodness someone's finally come to the
market with something that,

(32:34):
you know, has some good power. Now
I'm gonna be honest. Some
I'm a big Dyson fan. I don't have
a Dyson vacuum right now. I had one
years ago.
But their mini ones to me
are not as powerful. But everyone everyone loves
them.
But Samsung's announced a number of user products
during its world Samsung event

(32:56):
and, its
AI
jet lite
is the is the, is the vacuum.
It weighs a hundred 1.45
kilograms and said to be 23%
lighter than
a previous model
and
has some serious power. Hundred and

(33:17):
the,
with just 280
watts of power,
the motor is set to rotate a 40,000
RPM
which is in fact 5,000
RPM more than Dyson's offering.
But
wow. 40,000
RPM.

(33:37):
That's that's a number.
That really, really is.
Hope that thing never disintegrates while you're using
it.
Lots of, things going on in Hollywood. James
Cameron sizing up
AI with the idea that it can cut
the cost of a blockbuster in half.
There

(33:58):
people in the biz
are not happy. But in an interview
with me, the CTO, Andrew Bosworth, the filmmaker
weighed on stability AI and VFX in the
style of prompts and whether the inputs of
outputs of models
should be targeted, he says we're all models.
And,
he says that,
he thinks that movies movie

(34:21):
costs can be cut
in half like CG heavy films like Dune
and so forth.
So,
I would not be surprised.
In this day and age, anything you can
create cheaper is always better. Right?
Now,
boohoo.
Boohoo.
China will show fewer US films in response

(34:42):
to tariffs. Chinese film
and administration
claims the recent events resolved to reduce local
appeal for American movies. Well, maybe because people
don't have enough money
to go to American movies. That's maybe
more more like it.
What has happened here?

(35:03):
Have I froze?
It looks like I have froze.
What has happened to me?
Well, that's that's not
good. So there probably is no video today.
Alright.
Am I actually froze like I like I

(35:24):
think I am here? Let's let's look
if I'm froze.
Yeah. I I
am froze.
Yeah. So,
well, I that we might as well stop
the stream.
