The NBA Summer League offers entertainment but shouldn't be taken too seriously as an indicator of future NBA success, with historically misleading performances like Josh Selby outplaying Damian Lillard serving as a cautionary tale.

• Summer League stands for "Selling Unimportant Matchups Making Entertainment Revenue"
• Cooper Flagg and Bronny James' recent matchup highlights how narratives differ from actual performance
• Different competition, roles, schemes, and minutes make Summer League an imperfect predictor
• Josh Selby's dominance over Damian Lillard in Summer League never translated to NBA success
• WNBA should consider creating a Winter League to generate similar entertainment and storylines
• A Winter League could create opportunities for undrafted players, third-round picks, and college stars
• Bronny James could develop into a Drew Holiday-esque player despite skepticism

Speaker 1 (00:01):
What's up everybody?
It's your favorite show'sfavorite show Get a Bucket.
I'm your host, trey, and asusual, I hope you're all having
a wonderful, wonderful day.
Today we're going to talk about, well, a couple of things
really the NBA Summer League, myWNBA Winter League.
There's a lot of things we'regoing to talk about, but before
we do that, please make sure tohit that like and subscribe
button.
Comment.
Tell anyone who's anyone aboutthe show Trying to get the
ratings up a little bit.
You know, just a little bit.

(00:22):
But, like I said, we got acouple things to talk about, so
we're going to start it off withthe NBA Summer League.
Okay, now y'all might bewondering what this is right.
This is where we get to see theyoung stars who just got
drafted get a bucket, end of day, okay, so it's pure
entertainment.
All right, I just got to getthat out.

(00:42):
I entertainment.
All right, I just got to getthat out.
I gotta get that off my chestlike it was way heavy on my
heart.
You know I'm saying reason whybecause the way these boys is
going that is about to play itain't gonna be the same way that
they play in the league.
It's gonna be differentcompetition, different roles,
different schemes, differentminutes.
It's gonna be a lot thatthey're gonna have to figure out
.
So again, again, summer League,my outlook on it it's cool,

(01:07):
it's entertaining, that's all itis, which you can say well,
that's the NBA too.
Nah, it's a little bitdifferent.
I don't care about the SummerLeague as much outside of
entertainment and maybe gettingto see some of my boys play,
like, maybe I get to see Bronnyhoop a little bit, maybe I get
to see Co poop a little bit youknow what I'm saying, something
like that.
But that's what the SummerLeague is about Just to get a
little bit more eyes on.

(01:27):
Because again, the NBA SummerLeague or the NBA season just
ended.
So Summer League stands forselling unimportant matchups.
Making entertainment revenueleague I don't know what to tell
y'all.
Entertainment Revenue League Idon't know what to tell y'all.

(01:49):
Look, let's go ahead and pull upa couple of history lessons,
right?
For example, I don't know ify'all can read this right, but
in the summer league of thispoint in time, there was a
gentleman by the name of JoshShelby who was putting in work,
and I know y'all know the man, damian Lillard, right?
He was doing his thing too, andy'all know Damian Lillard.
Keep in mind Josh Shelby, actually, in high school, coming

(02:11):
out of high school, he washighly talented.
When he went to Kansas he waslike what, the number four
player in college, or somethinglike that.
He was pretty good.
He was pretty good and he wasviewed as a dog.
So NBA Summer League made atleast five three-pointers in
each game, tallying 24 in fourgames.
He was also active defensively, averaging 2.5 steals, but he

(02:35):
shot 59% from the floor, including 70.6% on threes, and
led all players in scoring at22.75 points per game.

(02:57):
Now, dame shot 26.5, fourrebounds, 5.6 assists in four
games and he shot 43.4 from thefloor.
Uh, that's tough, but keep inmind, though we know Damian
Lillard, y'all don't know JoshSelby.
Uh, y'all don't know Josh Selbyat all, and that's a daggone
shame, because I mean Josh, likebro, josh was a hooper.

(03:18):
Josh was a hooper like y'alldon't know Josh.
That's crazy, but I mean it'scool, though Again, that man
outplayed Damian Lillard, whoy'all all know and love.
But again, y'all know DamianLillard.

(03:39):
We don't know Josh Selby, butagain, in Summer League, josh
Selby outperformed DamianLillard 70% from the three, 59%
from the field, averaging 27,.
Making at least five, threes infour games, but we all know.

(04:03):
But that's cool though, becausey'all really care about, y'all
really care about summer league, though, like I said, ladies and
gentlemen, it's pureentertainment.
This is why I really care aboutwatching summer league, because
again, cooper flag, when summerleague debuted, despite uneven
showing, all right now, keep inmind, buddy only had about 10
points, like Buddy only had.

(04:27):
Oop.
My bad, I'm sorry, ladies andgentlemen, I'm sitting here not
even showing what I thought Iwas showing.
Daggone it, we only had about10 points, ladies and gentlemen,
cooper Flagg only had about 10points in this game.
But again, cooper Flagg winsSummer League debut, despite
uneven showing.
We don't talk about the ref, wejust see that part, that's cool

(04:47):
.
Coop was battling against Brawny, I'm sorry.
5 of 21.
0 of 5 from 3.
Now here's the thing, thoughHis three-pointers were just
short, so that does tell me itcould have been tight legs,
maybe.
Maybe the three-point linebeing extended backwards a
little bit might have been thereason why too.

(05:08):
I don't think it was tight legs.
In his debut game he lookedstraight.
He got a quality dunk In thatfirst quarter.
Second quarter he was active, scoring the ball, wise, very
attacking ball, I'm just sayingBrawny, though Brawny looked
quite professional.
Four minutes he had like fivepoints, very casual, I'm just

(05:31):
saying.
But because he lost?
Oh, because my Lakers lost.
Now the summer league should bedown, bronny.
Or should we over inflateBronny's numbers because?
Or his production?
Because again it is just SummerLeague.
Ladies and gentlemen, again I'mtelling y'all this is it's cool
that we got to see these boysplay against one another.
Like this matchup was was cool.

(05:53):
Bronny got a stop, coop got anice little turnaround on Bronny
.
Those were good matchups I'msure we'll be loving to talk
about.
Again.
Ladies and gentlemen, as far asSummer League goes, y'all heard
what I said Selling unimportantmatchups, making entertainment
revenue.
That's all it is.

(06:15):
It's just entertainment thatthe league is trying to revenue.
That's all it is.
It's just entertainment thatthe league is trying to get.
That's all.
So y'all can pay attention tothis if y'all like to.
But what I want y'all to payattention to and really start to
wonder about, ladies andgentlemen, is, well, my personal
thing the winner league.

(06:36):
Now, this is something I talkedabout on my show a couple months
ago with my boy, chris, and itwould be nice if the WNBA could
form a Winter League.
Now here's the thing we do havethe Unrivaled League, which
kind of is similar, I guess, like they're kind of similar in
ways.
I guess like they're kind ofsimilar in ways.

(06:56):
I would love to see theunrivaled league or the my
winter league pan out the way anNBA summer league would like.
Imagine if we got a PaigeBeckers with an unrivaled league
or summer league, I mean winterleague.
I think that would have beencool to see.
Now again, timeline wise, wecan't really is going to be
tough to get that.
So I think it's going to begeared more towards those
players who get ushered out.

(07:16):
But that's also why we got theexpansion leagues.
But because we have theexpansion teams, we get to bring
in more players.
So now if we had a winterleague or an unrivaled league or
we get to use those players inthe unrivaled league, maybe
those are extra opportunitiesfor those players to showcase
their talent.
Again, a winter league I wouldpersonally like to watch this,

(07:39):
especially seeing how the summerleague pops off.
Entertainment value wise.
What if college players got toplay in this that did not get
drafted, or those players whomaybe got selected in the third
round?
Realistically, realistically, they're not going to make too
many teams, so this could beanother possibility to showcase
your talent.
I'm just saying, ladies andgentlemen, I would love to see

(08:01):
this.
I really, truly would.
And again, if we could get apage beckers or, let's say, a
lauren betts in this situation,a flage johnson az foot, like
those caliber players in thiswinter league, that'd be nice,
that'd be cool.
Or in the unrivaled league, then we could start rival ring,

(08:23):
rivalry, rival ring.
Damn the wba league.
And I said that, and I said theunrivaled league is that could
be unrivaled soon.
What if they get a winterleague?
I think that could beinteresting again.
Summer league is entertainment, but it's also adding to the
storylines for the nba season.

(08:45):
Notice how folks are talkingabout brawny now a little bit
differently.
I've been saying since 2024brawny is a top 10 potential
draft pick.
In his draft class he couldhave gone top 10.
People are saying, no, I don'tsee it.
I don't see him being an NBAplayer.
I do, actually.

(09:06):
I see him being a DrewHoliday-esque player.
I can see that.
So when he plays well againstCooper Flagg, who's supposed to
be him, who's supposed to be whowas the number one pick, you
know I'm saying, and he doeswell against cooper flag.
Remember cooper flag went 5-21.
I like think bronnie got somecredit for that.
I'm sure the conversationaround bronnie got a change now.

(09:30):
So again, ladies and gentlemen,if that nba summer league has
shown me anything, it does addsome entertainment.
It does add for more storylinesthat you can start following.
So I would be curious to seewhat storylines we could get
with the Winter League.
I would be really curious.
Like Lauren Betts, flageJohnson, az Fudd and them, I

(09:52):
would love to see additionalstorylines heading into the WNBA
season.
And what if the Winter Leaguealso encompasses players from
overseas, players who are stillin the WNBA?
That'd be cool, that'd besmooth.
And then the next season you goto the Rival League If you do
well, ooh, that could beinteresting.
Again, just some things to thinkabout.

(10:13):
But I'm curious, ladies andgentlemen, what you all are
thinking about when it comes to,well, the Winter League, when
it comes to the NBA SummerLeague, what y'all think about
it.
Because again I told y'all it'snothing but entertainment.
Now I can add storylines, butagain that goes to entertainment

(10:34):
.
So I'm definitely curious whatyou all have to think about it.
So definitely comment below andlet me know what you all think.
But that's about all I got forthis one.
I'm sorry, like that I'm gonnago watch some more summer league
doka.
As you see, my boy coop, youknow I'm saying we, we are doing
our thing out there, like coopis doing smooth, but shout outny
too, because my Lakers islooking all right and I think
Bronny could be interesting forthe Lakers in the future.

(10:56):
I'm talking about this seasonthough, this upcoming season,
but again, I ain't going to puttoo much stock on it.
It's just Summer League.
But, ladies and gentlemen, likeI said, that does conclude the
end of the episode.
So I hope, hope, you all havebeen listening.
Thank you all for listening inaddition to listening, or to
hope you all have been listening, and please make sure to
continue to watch the NBA SummerLeague, watch the WNBA and also

(11:18):
continue to watch my show.
So continue to make sure tolike, subscribe, comment, tell
anyone who's anyone about theshow.
