Pickup basketball offers four key benefits beyond just playing the game: camaraderie, fitness, skill practice, and opportunities to compare playing styles with NBA players. These elements combine to make pickup basketball a valuable experience that can enhance your life both on and off the court.

• Building genuine friendships and professional connections through shared basketball experiences
• Getting a full-body workout that targets cardio, legs, core, and arms while having fun
• Using pickup games as low-pressure practice environments to develop new skills
• Analyzing different player matchups and archetypes similar to NBA comparisons
• Envisioning yourself as different NBA players to discover which style best matches yours
• Finding enjoyment in basketball beyond just winning and losing

Speaker 1 (00:05):
What's up everybody.
What's up everybody.
It's your favorite show'sfavorite show Get a Bucket.
I'm your host, trey, and, asusual, I hope you're all having
a wonderful, wonderful day.
Today we're going to talk about, well, pickup basketball.
But before we do that, pleasemake sure to hit that like and

(00:25):
subscribe button, comment, tellanyone who's anyone about the
show, trying to get the ratingsup a little bit.
You know, just a little bit.
But, like I said, ladies andgentlemen, we're going to talk
about pickup basketball.
Okay, now, there are fourthings that I'm going to talk
about with pickup basketballPickup hoops, all right, we got
to talk about the camaraderie,we got to talk about the
workouts, we got to talk aboutthe practice and we got to talk

(00:46):
about the NBA comparison.
Now, some of these kind ofblend in to one another, but
we're going to, we're going tobreak these down.
So we're going to.
We're going to start off withcamaraderie.
Ok, now, with camaraderie, you're developing friendships.
You are like, when I go, go outand play pickup, right, no
matter what gym I go to, I tryto make some sort of connection,

(01:08):
because you never know whoyou're going to need, right?
You never know what connectionsyou're going to find on the
basketball court.
I've gotten personally a jobconnection playing basketball,
so that was me personally.
I don't know about y'all, howabout not even just job-wise
though Friendships.
I have some friends on thebasketball court that I play
with that I go and get a bucketon them, so they don't really be

(01:30):
, they don't dog me.
I usually be the dude, Iusually do the dogging, but it's
still fun.
End of day, I'll just say I'velost a couple times, but I've
won, and it teaches you a lot ofthings about yourself too how
to lose, how to win, how topersevere, get over humps, all
that stuff.
So, again, from a basketballperspective, pick up basketball.
When you go play, it's not justbecause you have hoop dreams.

(01:52):
You actually go have fun Likeyou really have fun, and I'm
going to be honest, you start todevelop friendships amongst the
team that you play with too.
So, again, you might want to gotry playing, pick up basketball
every once in a while.
It's really fun and gainingsome extra friends, it ain't
that bad.
I ain't gonna lie to you.
How about this, though?

(02:13):
How about this?
A workout?
Now it's a workout.
Basketball in general is aworkout.
You're getting your cardioright, you're working on your
legs, you're working on yourcore, you're working on your arm
.
It's a full body workout,ladies and gentlemen.
So if you're able to go run, especially if your team is
winning this is why I'm sayingcamaraderie If you have good
camaraderie, chances are yourteam might win a little bit more

(02:34):
.
So if you're winning, chancesare you're going to be working
out a little bit more.
Like I go to the gym quite often.
Y'all see I'm skinny.
Part of that's due to myworkout.
Like I play basketball a goodamount of times.
Also, I have a very meanmetabolism.
Like I eat all the time, butI'm also able to run effectively

(02:54):
on the court because of that aswell too.
So, again, it's a workout.
So when you're playing pickupbasketball I'm not a
professional basketball player,by no means, but I do need to
make sure I take care of my bodyto some degree.
That means eating properly, thatmeans stretching properly,
right?
Because, again, when you playin basketball, it is a workout.
Like I don't like running a 5k.
I've ran a 5k before.

(03:15):
I just need to have a purposeoutside of just saying I ran a
5k.
In basketball, you can run a 5kvery easily, very easily.
And again, stretching veryimportant.
I would recommend you guyschoose yoga if not, but again,
you need that in order to playpickup basketball.
It's good to be healthy.

(03:37):
Here's what some people usepickup basketball for Practice
Like we talking about practice, not a game, not a game.
We talking about practiceBecause, in pickup basketball,
technically speaking, who reallycares if you miss a shot?
Outside of the people that you, that your peers, outside of
your peers, right?
Who really cares?

(03:57):
Like, no one's putting money onyou.
That would be an interestingtopic, though, but no one's
putting bread on you.
That would be an interestingtopic, though, but no one's
putting bread on you.
So, like, who really cares?
It's ego based, because youwant people to think you decent,
right, so you want to make sureyou hit and shot.
You don't want to look too bad, but, for real, for who care?
Practice, get the stuff that youdon't typically do in a game,
but you might want to.

(04:17):
Well, when you're playingpickup basketball, ladies and
gentlemen, this is actually thetime for you to get that
practice in.
This is speaking for the folkswho thinks ball is life right,
like y'all had you think youhave a shot at going pro.
Well, use pickup basketball asa means to practice stuff.
I do it all the time.
I don't think I'm going pro, bythe way, I just love hoops.
So when I go play differentgroups, I might practice

(04:38):
different stuff.
Like I might be the tallestperson on the court, fine, I'll
play on the block.
I hate playing on the block, but fine, I can practice it,
like if I'm playing with a tallteam.
Finally, I get to be a guard.
Now, cool, let me practice mypassing, let me practice my
shooting, let me practicecutting, whatever the case I
need to do.
So you get to practice whileyou play and pick up basketball.
I know, I know, not a game, nota game.

(05:01):
We talking about practice, butwe also talking about a game too
, because practice does makeperfect.
So don't forget that, ladiesand gentlemen.
Now here's the thing that Idon't think people have really
truly thought about when playingpickup basketball it's the NBA
comparisons.
I personally, like I said, Ihave a sports show.

(05:24):
It's called Get a Bucket.
So, ladies and gentlemen, whenI'm playing pickup, best believe
I'm looking at other players tosee how archetypes battle
against different archetypes.
Yeah, nba players are different, don't get me wrong.
But pickup hoopers you can say, okay, this aspect of this
player reminds me of DevinBooker, or reminds me of Zach

(05:47):
Levine or Desmond Bain orwhomever else you want to choose
right.
So when I'm going to the gymsdifferent gyms, by the way you
see different players.
You see different playersbattling against one another.
I love envisioning these are NBAplayers going up against one
another.
Yeah, the talent level's down, like, of course, the NBA player
versus pickup Hoopers.

(06:07):
Come on now.
There's a mean differencebetween me and Steph Curry.
There's a mean difference, butstill, it's fun to see and
envision how these players areplaying.
Also, what about yourself?
Envision yourself as an NBAplayer.
Maybe you want to play as StephCurry, maybe you want to try to
play as Kevin Durant.
See whose game fits your stylebest, or see what combinations

(06:32):
fit your style best.
That's always something fun todo.
And again, I'm not trying tosteal their games.
I'm not trying to steal theirshots.
I'm just trying to figure outhow their games pair in
comparison to other players.
And I'm not always going to beable to see Steph Curry versus
James Harden or, I don't know, kevin Durant versus Braun.
I'm not going to always seethose matchups, but you might be

(06:53):
able to envision that in pickupbasketball.
That's a fun little pastime ofmine.
So again, ladies and gentlemen, when we're talking about pickup
hoops, pickup basketball, thereare four elements that I want
to make sure that y'all payattention to Camaraderie,
working out practice, nbacomparisons and again the NBA

(07:16):
comps.
That's my favorite one.
But, ladies and gentlemen, forthose of y'all who have not
played pickup basketball, doesthis make it more entertaining
for you now?
Does this give you more of areason to go watch and play
pickup basketball?
How about the hoopers who doplay pickup basketball?
Do you see some similarities inwhat I'm saying already?
Did I leave anything out?

(07:37):
I definitely want y'all to letme know.
But but, ladies and gentlemen, that is all the time I have for
the show, so I mean for today'sepisode at least.
So I greatly appreciate y'allfor listening, but definitely
comment your thoughts below.
So make sure to like, subscribe, comment, tell anyone who's
anyone about the show.
My name is Trey.
I'm the host of Get A Bucket.
Hope you all are having a goodone.

(07:59):
Take care.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
