Per più di un millenio, Salins-les-Bains si è sviluppata colllo sfruttamento ed il commercio del sale. Ormai, il museo del sale e la grande salina ci offrono una testimonianza unica di come veniva sfruttato il sale in Franche-Comté. La visita inizia in enormi gallerie sotterranee che uniscono due pozzi attrezzati con un sistema di pompa, sempre in stato di uso, che permetteva di attingere l'acqua salata tramite un banco di sale gemma che si trovava a più di 200 metri di profondezza. Seguendo quel percorso del sale, il visitatore arriva dopo alla sala delle "padelle" dove l'acqua veniva scaldata per trarne il sale dopo evaporazione. La visita continua col museo del Sale ed uno spazio dedicato ai più giovani. Messo in scena in modo raffinato, il museo propone anche una mostra di filmetti ed una collezione di oggetti tecnici che aiutano a capire l'importanza millenaria dell'industria salinaria comtese. In fine, la grande Salina di salins-les-Bains è particolarmente legata alla sua gemmella di Arc-et-Senans tramite un salamoiadotto di 21 chilometri di lunghezza, costruito nel 18esimo secolo per portare la salamoia fino alla nuova salina reale. Il 27 giugno 2009, le due saline sono state scritte sull'elenco del patrimonio mondiale dell'UNESCO.
