Speaker 1 (00:01):
Somebody. You're listening to the Hammering Nichel Show. O.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Man, I love it. It's Friday. My name is Nigel.
It's Jason Hammer over there with a very special in
studio guest.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
Former Major League Baseball closer, flame thrower Hoosier Brownsburg stand
up Drew Store and is with us. How are you
and my friend? I am excellent. Thanks for having me.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Brown Little by the way back fighting their way to
the World Series. I believe they play. Do they played
the day or Saturday against Illinois to go to in Whitestown?
Speaker 1 (00:35):
I believe. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
I need to catch up on it. Yeah, I need
to send them a video. So thanks for reminder.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
What is it? Are you guys like the seventy two Dolphins,
so you're rooting for them to lose so that, like
you guys, can be the prettier team play.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
Is that my team lost in Central Region in between
the two that wins.
Speaker 1 (00:51):
Yeah, I prefer everybody to go. You are the man
behind Field of Dreams Whiskey, and we've talked about it
a bunch, but it came somebody's listening for the very
first time here. How did you go from Major League
Baseball closer to a guy that is harvesting the actual
Field of Dreams to get whiskey.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
I essentially I collected too much Bourbon throughout my career.
Now I just fell in love with the storytelling that
you know, Bourbon has. And you know, it's back when
I started collecting, it was before money mattered. It was
just who you knew, and so that was always a
fun chase. And you know, I had the idea in
twenty eighteen to take the corn from the Field of
Dreams movie site to make it into bourbon.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
And this isn't just some quirky little baseball name because
you played and Field of Dreams is a baseball name.
This is the actual corn from the Field of Dreams. Correct.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
So the stuff in this bottle, the corn in that
is from the Yankees White Sox game in twenty one,
so kind.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
Of a wow.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
Yeah, so we yeah, we got to kind of force
it into people's heads, like, hey, it is that actual corn.
But yeah, it's it's been fun.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
Man.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
I hung it up at twenty twenty, and then twenty
one just kind of pretty much started the whole process,
assuming I was going to run into a no at
some point, and so far, so good.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
That's awesome, man. How did you get access to the
Field of Dreams? Because it feels like there'd be a
lot of people that want to do stuff with that
iconic cornfield in Iowa. How did you get the green light?
Speaker 3 (02:22):
I just found a guy on LinkedIn that was on
the board of the LLC and sent an email and
hoped he was a baseball fan.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
So he feels like there should be a much more
difficult story how to go through all these steps? I
found it.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Dude, what you do when you just kind of reach
out and ask questions.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
I just asked him, like, hey, just curious what you
guys do with the corn and so I talked to
him and they put me in contact with Andy Ray,
who's one of the brothers that works on the field,
and they had the lease and luckily.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
I remember you coming in here first with the cocktail
in the cane, yep, and then it turned into this
which is high end, very very nigh whiskey.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
Yeah, it was started. I kind of say the can
drinks was like our dress rehearsals. Yeah, so trying to
get in I wanted to get an idea of the
process while our juice aged a little bit, and so
that was Yeah, a big learning A great learning experience
for me. And now you know we've got two skews
on the shelf. We're gonna launch another one here in
a couple of weeks.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
Which wills a bottle but yeah, just a new but yeah,
different bottle.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
You're talking to Listed and Beach Grove here. You're gonna
need to simple it down just a little bit. But
you know, I'm just big on the industry terms. I
guess no.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
And so we've got a new sku coming out in
two weeks called All Star. Will be the largest blend
of most diverse blend of American whiskey ever.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
So it's our juice. And then we got a barrel.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
From every major League market, So we have thirty barrels
from thirty distillers all in one bottle. And you've got
a signing tomorrow, Yeah, tomorrow, a Total Wine in Nora
two to four.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Oh man, that's going to be packed, I hope. So
there's gonna be lines out the door. Two to four Key,
Total Wine and Nora. People love Total Wine and people
love your stuff.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
I appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
Yeah, it's that we're fortunate enough to have big displays
and all the total wines around here, and yeah, tomorrow
is signing brought to you guys, some trucks we're going
to give out.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
We're going to give.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
Out trucks the first fifty people, little little toy trucks.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
There.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
I like it. I like it. What's this little suitcase
thing that you have here?
Speaker 3 (04:22):
Drew so on our small batch bottle. Hidden under this
capsule is a retired baseball legend, so we say Hall
of Famers or Hall of Fame stories, So all these
guys hide underneath, so it's essentially like a pack of
cards that gets you drunk.
Speaker 1 (04:37):
Hold one up on this YouTube camera for the folks
watching online so they can see what we're talking. I
just took the cork.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Off the bottle that Drew gave me, and I'm holding
up to the YouTube.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
And each one of these little samples is a major
league baseball legend, so we you can't see it.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
You got some fun ones in there, like I got
some like selfish picks in there, like Jay Buner was,
Like I was a big Jay Buner guy back in
the nineties. See Chris Sabo, Yeah Sabo, I was him
twice for Halloween, so he had to be on the
top you got Chipper Johnny Bench.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
You gave me the one with Thurman Munson on the
top o.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
My old man was a Johnny Bench guy. Man, my
old man grew up watching Big Red Machine. Yeah, yep,
so we got that. We got Robin you Ollnes, you know,
kind of all over place.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
But then you also have like the Moburg and you know,
like you get some of those niche guys you got.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
Who are some of your favorite teammates? When you played
Mark Durosa, let's see, I really liked it. And what
makes somebody a you know, a good teammate per se.
I'm not saying the best player, but somebody that you'd
want to be around.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
Oh yeah, so d ro just he added a great
veteran presence and kind of kept it light and like
really made sure that you were able to laugh at
yourself because of the ups and downs of the season. Man,
it's gonna it's tough.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
I mean, if you don't laugh at yourself, I would
imagine you'd go insane. You have to be reminded you
have one of the coolest jobs in the world. Yes, yes, exactly. So,
Yeah he was great.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
I mean, no surprise that he's managing Team USA, And
I mean, I'm sure at any point he'll take a
big league job, right because he really he really gets it.
And uh, like I said, it's a big reason for
our success in DC.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
So let's let's sample a little bit of this here.
What have we got? What is this?
Speaker 3 (06:10):
So this is our small batch. It's ninety nine proof
and for just the reason we picked ninety nine is
because I had ninety nine career saves and annoyed me
that I didn't get a hundred, So uh decided to
kind of lean into it.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
You know, Bobby on the YouTube chat, drink the whole
bottle is closer.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
Look, I know we're late. Is being a closer one
of the most strestful jobs in the in Major League
Baseball and being on a team.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
Yeah, it's it's like the coolest job if you're good
at it, and the worst if you're not.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
You yeah, you're pretty good at of me.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
Yeah oh yeah no, it's uh, you know you. It
just takes a couple missed field goals for people to
remember any Yeah. Yeah, but yeah, no, it's it. Look,
I loved it. It The adrenaline of coming out of
the bullpen, Like what was your song?
Speaker 1 (07:00):
Like when you came out. What was the song.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
Five Finger Death Punch remake of Bad Company?
Speaker 1 (07:05):
Hell yeah, okay.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
And then I also went to Johnny Cash, God's going
to cut you down, so I kind of followed bounced.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
In Toronto, I dropped a Paul Revere by the Beastie Boys.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
Nice, here we go boy, Yeah, all right, what are
we drinking to my friend?
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Yeah, cheers to uh, you know, hot summer days. Nothing
better than hot whiskey.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
Field of dreams, whiskey.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
Here we go, Hm, Drew, thank you, thank you so much. Man,
It's just it's such an amazing story. I appreciate it.
Get your bottle, tell you man said absolutely well, yes,
get your bottle tomorrow. Uh total wine. The Nora location
two to four. Drew is going to be there and
(07:51):
uh man, this is so good. That's good stuff.
Speaker 1 (07:53):
Thank you, thank you. It's the Hammer and Nigel Show.
