Dilan kiest haar eigen weg, juist omdat de verwachtingen van buitenaf haar zelden pasten. Als meisje ontdekte ze gaandeweg dat ze een meisje was vooral door herhaalde boodschappen over wat daar zogenaamd niet bij hoorde. In het theater vond ze een plek waar ze de regels mocht bevragen. In hettheater, de film en de literatuur onderzoekt ze niet alleen zichzelf maar ook de uiteenlopende ervaringen van de verschillende generatie Turkse-Nederlanders. Zo geeft ze stem aan wat verzwegen bleef.
