Ooit dacht Hans de wereld te kunnen veranderen bij devakbond, maar hij kwam wat bedrogen uit. Het bleek een loggere en conservatievere groep dan hij wellicht gehoopt had. Daarna werkte hij bij het Centraal Planbureau en de Rabobank, waar hij met veel voldoening aan macro-economische modellen werkte. Toch begon het soms te schuren. Hoe kwam het bijvoorbeeld dat private banking clients tijdens de financiële crisis alleen bezig waren met huneigen winsten? En hoe kwam het dat ecologische en klimaateffecten helemaal niet in zijn economische modellen besloten lagen? Het begon steeds meer te dagen dat de vaste set aannames in de economie gestoeld is op één bepaald technocratisch, individualistisch en reductionistisch wereldbeeld – en dat wereldbeelden veranderen misschien wel het moeilijkste is wat er is.
