De genocide op de Palestijnen opende definitief zijn ogen voor de hypocrisie van het Westen. Die hypocrisie was alleszins nieuw, maar nu kon hij er echt niet meer omheen. Hij begon te schrijven aan een manuscript, en in het schrijven erover kwam hij de hypocrisie weer tegen. Volgens zijn redacteuren was zijn betoog te boos, en ze vroegen hem vriendelijk terug te grijpen naar zijn eerdere plan: om te schrijven over de sociale klim. Zelf was Sinan sociaal geklommen, maar om toe te treden tot de middenklasse had hij bepaalde kanten van zichzelf moeten achterlaten bij de poort. Zijn sociale klim bleek zijn val te zijn. Als het wegkijken of zelfs steunen van een genocide beschaving is, dan is hij liever een barbaar.
