Après avoir voyagé avec sa famille à travers les States, celle-ci s’installa à San Mateo dans la baie de San Francisco en Californie où Kris fréquenta la High School. En 1954, il sera inscrit au Pomona College où il pratiquera le football et le rugby et se mettra à l’écriture.
Il obtient en 1958 un BA, (baccalauréat) en littérature, il va continuer ses études
en Angleterre, à l’université d’Oxford après avoir obtenu une bourse Rhodes (2), Chris s’intéressa à la boxe, mais surtout il commencera à écrire des chansons et aussi à les interpréter.
il rejoue ainsi au rugby à XV. C'est à partir de cet instant qu'il commence à composer et interpréter ses propres chansons. Avec l’aide d’un manager, Larry Parnes, il enregistra sous le nom de Kris Carson chez Top Rank Records.
