Matt a passé son enfance sur deux lieux car il grandit à Austin avec sa mère Carol Castillo et à Edinburg, au Texas, dans la vallée du Rio Grande, avec sa tante, Sylvia Hernandez, et son oncle, Alex.
Sa mère savait qu'il recevrait une meilleure éducation dans le sud du Texas, alors Matt est allé à l'école à Édinbourg. Il voyait sa mère chaque fois qu'il en avait l'occasion, c'est-à-dire à chaque période de vacances. Voilà pourquoi Matt aime ces deux villes qui l’ont vues grandir
