Dan débute sa carrière comme guitariste, chanteur de variété et Jazz dans divers orchestres notamment avec Raoul Bruckert (Jazz), Marc Taynor (Country Western) et le Trio Claude Michel (Variétés).
Issu d'un milieu modeste, un père garagiste et une mère couturière, Dan Dickson habite avec sa famille à Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon dans la banlieue lyonnaise. Il passe ses premières années scolaires en internat où il apprend à jouer un peu de piano, puis le chant et plus tard il se passionne pour la guitare de son frère et le banjo paternel.
